Hey #IAedChat crew! Nick, Principal of Jackson Elementary @Jackjetscrcsd in Cedar Rapids. Currently traveling home from watching the Vikings "play football."
A1 the second one speaks to me. IMO it is saying that for growth and learning to happen we must have the right attitude complimented by a genuine effort. #IAedChat
A1: you mean I can only pick one? I choose the quote from @msrachelhollis We are the creators of our story and when we stop growing, we stop living. Growing is our choice. Not easy, but worth it! We were #madeformore#IAedChat
I like the first quote, because it speaks to maintaining your attitude, even if the results aren't immediately what you envision (I think the second one has a similar approach) #iaedchat
A1 I learn from my experiences-take a lesson (or two) from each of those experiences to keep making memorable memories to write in your life story! #IAedChat
A1: The third picture: Every year is a new adventure worth living. Thinking that we have it all figured out is a scary position to be in. We never stop learning. We never stop growing. #iaedchat
A1: This Michael Jordan quote is very similar to what Churchill was saying. I like that is shows that failure is part of learning and getting better and not just an end where you should quit and walk away. #IAedChat
A1: Failure is a tool that allows for self reflection and of modeling growth mindset along with vulnerability. I accept the challenge to never give up and I dare my students to do the same. #iaedchat
A1 #IAedChat New chapters quite stick with me! We are so used to habits that have been with us good/bad/indifferent that sometimes we fail to stray! Every day is an opportunity to get better/do better- WRITE SOMETHING NEW!
A1. For me success come from keeping the enthusiasm after repeated failures. My life is full of examples of repeated failures, but I have learned so much from each one that it has made me the successful person I am today. #iaedchat
A2 - Times are always changing. Either we learn to grow with them or get left behind. Still difficult to be let go with the old ways sometimes. Especially when it worked. #iaedchat
A2: Do you live to work or work to live? As a teacher and parents, know what hat you are wearing. Be present and invested in the moment, where ever that may be. #IAedChat
A2: Balance is something I always struggle with. To be intentional, I often write the core priorities - for the school year, for the day, for my life. I try to be present and not let things pull at me and insist that's what my life is supposed to be instead. #iaedchat
Less teacher talk, more student discourse when working with students. Allowing students to learn from each other rather then me jumping in just because I THINK they’re struggling. Lettinggo can be difficult for me but there is progress is the struggle #iaedchat
A2: I don't think we ever find balance, but we continue to search for the appropriate life fit. Do something every day that makes you happy. Always think about your "why." What is your purpose? Have this in the front of your mind consistently. #iaedchat
A2: Use our one precious life to do the things that we find purpose in, that align with our mission. Let go of what is outside of our control. #iaedchat
A2 finding balance by paying attention to my kids’ body language...they are completely transparent when I am not fully invested and present! That’s when I know to shut it off and commit! #IAedChat
A2 Less teacher talk, more student discourse when working with students. Allowing students to learn from each other rather then me jumping in just because I THINK they’re struggling. Lettinggo can be difficult for me but there is progress is the struggle #iaedchat
A2: I hold on to the people who are around me & that I have been given the gift to serve and to my purpose... I let go of set practices and negative thinking or problem-focused situations #iaedchat
#IAedchat@lav2nd....i completely agree!! So many topics we need to carry year round, but this one needs to start start in pre-k and hopefully will leave in the minds of our graduating seniors, and our world will be a little better than when then entered our classrooms! #Never🛑
International Day for Preservation of the Ozone may have been on the 16th, but it's a topic we should discuss year round! 🌍 Do you agree? https://t.co/spiFBlvz1C
Well… almost everything that doesn’t give me joy I try to let go… cleaning and washing the dishes… and washing and folding clothes.. I’m super sad to say that those don’t count. #IAedChat
A2. As teachers we naturally want our students to learn and do well but sometimes letting go and allowing them to explore is teaching in itself. #IAedChat
A2: Know you can’t do everything. Focus on a couple of key things in your teaching life that you either want to enhance or improve. Scale back if you ever start neglecting your personal life. A positive personal life makes us better professionally. #iaedchat
A2: It’s about removing myself as the key component in the balance and going back to the purpose of the situation/experience. It’s easy to let go if my why and actions to obtain my why don’t align. #iaedchat
A2: I'm also connecting this to a few chapters in #whatschoolcouldbe by @dintersmith We should let go of obsolete things, and do better things instead of trying to do the obsolete things better. #iaedchat
2 #IAedChat Ting requires keeping up with what is relevant to the Ss we interact with every day! Keep what is working/engaging and let go of our favorite lessons! I leave my ego at the door each morning and put it back on when I get home. Carrying the weight of our jobs=STRESSED!
A3: Both: Don’t stand around and allow a negative culture. A negative culture is like a virus. It will spread. Rise above it, even if it means rising alone. #IAedChat
A3: I like the first one. We have a role to play within our cultures. Culture is the beliefs and behaviors of those working/living in that space. We have an obligation to do what is needed while holding ourselves, students, and peers accountable to excellence. #iaedchat
A3: The 1st one; we shouldn’t let others influence what we think of ourselves, nor should we cause others to think badly of themselves... but most importantly we must live and show up in a way that makes the world, & especially the community around us, a better place #iaedchat
Some good Churchill quotes tonight. In order to improve and bring about change, sometimes you have to do things that aren't popular and go against the grain a bit...and that's okay. #IAedChat
A3: The first one resonates more. Life isn't something you can allow to happen to you - it's good to remember to drive the vehicle, not just hitch a ride. Otherwise, you only go places others choose. #iaedchat
A3: Both quotes resonate with me regarding equity, and I offer this from @nhannahjones "It's a choice: We choose equality or we choose injustice." Standing by and not doing or saying anything is choosing injustice. #iaedchat
A3: positive cultures are born from trust and purpose. Those "head winds" could be those crucial conversations that keep everything propped up. #IAedChat
A3. Kites rise hishest against the wind! A positive school culture that is welcoming to all P and community, will rise highest against the naysayers who are afraid of change! #iaedchat
A3: We need to stand together rather than being negative (making excuses, blaming others, etc.). When we stand together to improve the system our culture will change as we are focused on a shared mission and goal. #IAedChat
A3 I like the first one. It says to me that I must do something I have to be willing to take action or take a risk. Without this I get nowhere and neither do those around me #IAedChat
A3: #iaedchat I think the quote by Yehuda Bauer resonates with me because we can't ever be a bystander in education. We need to be present and have a voice.
A3. I like both quotes...but the kites speak to me. We need to lead by taking the higher road, like the kite rising higher in the wind. If we are standing tall, and leading in a positive way, people will see us and follow us. #iaedchat
I was just talking to one of my students last week about how we shouldn't worry about things that are in the past and we can't change. We should focus and hold onto the things that make us feel happy! #IAedChat
A4: I love the analogy of the second one and refer to it often. Don’t ever try to think there is no benefit in collaboration. Work together… get better results. Make your room endless. #IAedChat
A4 number two days it all we all have gifts to give and we all have different perspectives. The collective knowledge of a group could be the next big thing. #IAedChat
A4: “Two heads are better than one, not because either is infallible, but because they are unlikely to go wrong in the same direction.” – C.S. Lewis #IAedChat
A4 we only know what we know. Our experiences, culture, background all prepare us for different perspectives. If you open your tribe, you will most likely open your mind! #IAedChat
A4- Both, No one person is ever the smartest and has all the answers. A dictatorship gets things done quickly but never lasts. Collaboration may take longer but the best decisions are made and can last a life time. #iaedchat
A3 #IAedChat Kites against the wind! We have to change and bring our organization with us. At times, against the wind! What an awesome way of viewing culture and the importance of “gong against the grain!”
A4: the first one. The input from a team can always generate more ideas than an individual. Buy in is a little more accessible if more people contribute towards solutions. #IAedChat
A4: I like both of these. We are simply better together. And even more importantly, we are better with different view points when we are pushed and need to clarify our thinking. Differences are awesome and spur reflection. #iaedchat
A4: Both resonate with me as competition brings negativity to collaboration. When we all focus on improving our own practices, we have a better chance of increasing the capacity as a group as our various talents can strengthen the experience for our Ss. #IAedChat
A4: “The smartest person in the room, is the room”.... our ideas only bring in our perspective, but collectively we can see things in a broader, more global way- and isn’t that how we’re supposed to@look at things?!? #iaedchat
The quote by Hoffman, and I will add: Communicating your ideas in a way that is nonjudgemental or condescending goes a long way in being a good colleague and someone who can be an effective collaborator. #IAedChat
A4: I love quotes and I love being on teams. I've been lucky to have a solid team of co-workers the past few years who made going to work enjoyable and made our curriculum meaningful. #iaedchat
A4. "No matter how brillant your mind or strategy....to a team." You can be the brightest crayon shining in a box, you are one, but against a team who joins together, and votes as one. #iaedchat
A5 I love this when thinking about designing lessons, room spaces, etc. Don’t settle for average. Be intentional in everything you do… because #kidsdeserveit…. ALL kids deserve it. #IAedChat
A4 we only know what we know. Our experiences, culture, background all prepare us for different perspectives. If you open your tribe, you will most likely open your mind! #IAedChat
A5 have variety in seating give them a voice include them in the design and set up. Have conversations with the individuals on what they like and need. Build relationships and strive to create a community of partnership and collaboration #IAedChat
A5: Relationships first, content second, always. Do not underestimate the first 300 seconds you have with Ss each day. Greet them by name, play music, have a handshake, know them as people. It is our obligation to create a safe space for kids to thrive. Intentional. #iaedchat
A5: our school has done a lot over the past year to align grading practices, PLC discussions and instructional practices to help teams be on the same page when it comes to what is being taught- the how is negotiable, but not the what- same standards taught to EVERY kid #iaedchat
A5 making sure we all commit to the OUR kids vs MY/YOUR kids mindset is a great start. Investing in each other aligns support, lifelines, and a sense of belonging. From there you can go anywhere #IAedChat
A5 I think it's our mental models that can affect this. Do we believe that Ss have the choice to improve if they are lagging behind or do we say we will support you so you can't possibly fail? #IAedChat
A5. Being culturally responsive and culturally aware is crucial especially in today’s society where so many of our students feel unaccepted, unwanted and unfit. #IAedChat
A5 I think it's our mental models that can affect this. Do we believe that Ss have the choice to improve if they are lagging behind or do we say we will support you so you can't possibly fail? #IAedChat
A5: As teachers we need to move away from asking the question "what am I teaching" and ask "who am I teaching. The content may be the same but the kids are always changing. That requires you to constantly evolve as an educator. #iaedchat
A5- Champion a student - wouldn't you want the best for your kid? When they are all our kids, they all deserve the best. This goes for admin. and championing their staff as well! #iaedchat
A5 #iaedchat Employ the best, support their growth, allow them to do their job well and build a dynamic culture where the whole school takes responsibility for every child in every class. #teaching#culture#ednav#teamwork
A5. If we consciously look out for different types of S mindsets as we plan, we can make room for a builder, an introvert, a leader, someone uncertain to fly in our schools - knowing that we are all this person in diff. contexts #iaedchat
A6 YES! We need to ensure we are equipping our Ss with the creative space needed to be self-directed, creative thinkers! They need a space unlike traditional schools to do this. Schools are beginning to embrace this, but not all….yet! #IAedChat@SirKenRobinson
A6 creativity allows you to inspire, dream, and persevere-but it also allows you to problem solve and contribute. ALL are needed to be a functioning contributor to society #IAedChat
A6: I think he's right when too often Ss are faced with one-answer type of problems. Creativity requires problema that do not rely on any singular answer. There has to be a balance between teaching and applying skills. #IAedChat
A6: the world our S’s will enter as adults will value their problem solving, innovation & ability to improve the systems they live and work in- as educators we must prepare them for that. W/ states looking for accountability through testing, creativity gets pushed aside #iaedchat
A6 agree 100%. Our system has continued to put emphasis on standardized tests for holding people accountable. There are teachers who when given the opportunity to be creative are to afraid to risk it. Students get caught up in this cycle. We have to encourage dreamers #IAedChat
A6- We know math and reading skills are not as great as they should be, but every time I ask a business person what we need to work on the answer is ALWAYS soft skills! We are teaching kids to prepare for jobs that don't currently exist. Creativity is a must! #iaedchat
A6. "Creativity is now as important as literacy!" Creativity is needed in so many thinking processes, from problem solving, writing, acting, designing, building, experimenting, making, creating, generating new ideas, etc.#iaedchat
A6. As we embrace creativity as something important, it's important to genuinely welcome it in our students and learning spaces - it can be messy, inefficient, off-topic, and time-consuming. It's also gloriously fulfilling. #iaedchat
A5 #IAedChat EVERY T should start the year with the 3 T’s- Relarionships, Relationships, Relationships! The Fundamental 5 is a great help as far as getting organized!
A6: Creativity allows imagination to take flight. This can be problem solving, rdg/writing, building... We have to remember that passions of Ss create the next best seller, chart topper, award winner, & crowd pleasing lesson. Learning in any arena is built on ownership. #iaedchat
A6: This is something I think could always improve in education simply because we are beat down with standards and assessments so often. Creativity is so important and it allows us to see a side of our students we otherwise wouldn't if we didn't let them explore. #iaedchat
A7 We can’t keep kids in a box. It kills their passion. We need to ensure we are not squashing the love of reading everywhere we turn with endless assessments! Let them find JOY in reading. #IAedChat
A7 @pernilleripp is a reading hero in my book. She is spot on. They way we approach reading has helped to perpetuate the problem with people who don’t read. We have to allow them some freedom to develop their identity as a reader. #IAedChat
A7: it's the same sentiment for music. To generate interest, Ss must experience the joys and wonders whether it's reading a good book or playing in a band. #IAedChat
A7 @pernilleripp speaks to the importance of voice and choice. You read to learn when a task is in front of you-but most adults read for leisure and interests. Infuse that passionate reading into the everyday reading of our students and our reading scores will rise! #IAedChat
A7: The choice between teaching and living reading strikes me as a false one. The importance of teaching reading as a skill cannot be overstated: https://t.co/vv3VGzt6He#IAedChat
A7: Truth. We (as a system) have attempted to mandate effective reading practices and in the process have killed the love for many kids. I think a shift is slowly starting to take place, but reading instruction has been in a rough place in the past 15ish years. #iaedchat
A7 #IAedChat If we don’t “walk the walk,” Ss will do what we ask them to do, mostly, and never fully engage! If we MODEL reading and express the passion we have for it, it just might stick! DEAR Time applies to ALL! I’m guilty of not sticking with it!
#IAedChat A6 As a musician/ed, I believe we tend to take "play" out of ed & feed content. This video shared on FB/Twitter is powerful- https://t.co/CPtVWYDKGC If we take the conversation & creativity that our students bring to school and build on it - I could see powerful gains.
A7- TOO many times I hear I don't like reading. Then I ask them what their favorite magazine is. If they like it they will read it. Ask them, don't force them. #iaedchat
A7. "You can choose to create passionate.... the choice is yours!" You can create a a love for reading with a Ss or an attitude of dislike for reading by how you lead them! #iaedchat
Thanks to tonight's participants and my partners in moderating @danpbutler and @duffysclassroom! Don’t forget to bookmark our #IAedChat google site which houses an archive of these chats, our live chats, and resources! https://t.co/RDe0s53sQ5
A7: I think the quote can be broadened to education in general. Are kids just trying to do school? Are teachers just trying to do school to the kids and drop knowledge? Or is it something that both are really engaged in? #IAedChat
A7: I think the quote can be broadened to education in general. Are kids just trying to do school? Are teachers just trying to do school to the kids and drop knowledge? Or is it something that both are really engaged in? #IAedChat
A6. Rdg has become more of a task filled w/written responses/exams and less of hobby. We aren’t encouraging reading by forcing kids to read, what ever happened to reading for the fun of it? No tasks, no questions. Give students the choice to read what they want to read. #IAedChat
