Hi #ngsschat! I'm back!!!! lol Not that I went anywhere, but sometimes I forget, especially in the summer. ;) Kara, will be teaching Chem, Materials Science and Microbio in NYC this year. :)
Hi folks! I hope all is good out there in #NGSSChat land. Ted Willard participating from @NSTA Galactic Headquarters in beautiful downtown Arlington VA. I'm known as NSTA's standards geek, educational cartographer, and 3D Songster. And I'm ready to chat.
Hi #ngsschat! I'm back!!!! lol Not that I went anywhere, but sometimes I forget, especially in the summer. ;) Kara, will be teaching Chem, Materials Science and Microbio in NYC this year. :)
Holly Hereau, in a bar Bellevue WA til the red eye to Detroit. Worked with so many amazing people this summer who are stretching themselves so ALL students have access to great science experiences. Thankful for these incredible educators! #ngsschat@nextgenstoryli1@OfficialNGSS
A1 It was great to meet @BMSscienceteach#NSTA18 to continue to collaborate w/Patrick Also a good friend & colleague @sagan80 who is a sounding board every day at school #ngsschat
A1: My grade level colleague and fellow #NGSS guru has become my fiancé this year! He always inspires me, pushes me and we make quite the nerdy science teacher couple! #ngsschat
I'm going to pick @katesor1027 who I didn't know a year ago (although we may have attended a meeting together). Since then I've been able to present twice with her and attend a #fivetools workshop with her. Her dedication is inspiring (as is her love of Diet Coke) #NGSSchat
A1: I've had some pretty awesome students this past year that inspired me to up my teaching game. They asked so many awesome questions and were interested in investigating to find the answers. My admin is very supportive, giving me time to plan and go to wksps #ngsschat

#NGSSChat A1: Sci Ts in my district inspire me. I see many of them in action throughout the year, and their passion for the Ss is real. I have seen far more creative ideas in a short amount of time than I have ever done.
#NGSSchat A1: my coteacher has been amazing.1st to actually want to know content& lead some days. Also @MathforAmerica PDs have been great inspiration! @AMNH ecology disrupted series
A1: Inspired by all of the people I met at @DigFieldSchool this past July. I got to see and do what scientists do in the field and can bring that experience back to my classroom. #NGSSchat

A1: My district started an #NGSS leadership team 4 years ago and each year we have been able to share more, learn from each other, inspire and educate our buildings about NGSS and what we do and what we can bring to our Ss. #grateful#ngsschat
A1: Inspired by all of the people I met at @DigFieldSchool this past July. I got to see and do what scientists do in the field and can bring that experience back to my classroom. #NGSSchat
A1. I have many friends that I've worked with in both industry and in academics that have inspired me and encouraged me throughout the years! #ngsschat
A1: Inspired me? My daughter.
Supported my professional growth-- so many people! I am forever grateful. But @jimmypack and @lynzhite have supported me so much! (And also my Twitterless husband! haha) #NGSSChat
A1: I read this book this summer by my old colleague and incredible coach and speaker @lisa_westman. You should follow her for all your differentiation needs (and she makes incredible infographics!) #ngsschat
#NGSSChat A1(follow-up): Aside from Biblical inspiration, I will look to my children. As a new hs grad and college grad, they are transitioning to a new phase of life. Being a veteran T, I know I'll have to do the same when I retire. #chchchchchanges
A1: So many- @RRuggirello gives me guidance and opportunities to learn daily! The Ts I work w/ lend their classroom expertise and make me want to figure out best PD practices. District Coordinators like @Velloff. Twitter #ngsschat PLN. My son!
I'm pretty darn inspired by the @ASMInternatnl#materialsscience teacher camp I'm attending this week. I can't wait for classes to begin and to start using what I've learned! I think the Ss will love it! #ngsschat

The paleontologists and astronomers at the Rochester Academy of Science have challenged and inspired me over the past year. They have provided amazing field experiences that I have been able to share with my Ss #ngsschat
A2: I loved when the students were creating and using their critical thinking skills. Loved seeing their faces light up during engineering practices. #ngsschat
A2: I loved when the students were creating and using their critical thinking skills. Loved seeing their faces light up during engineering practices. #ngsschat
A2: On the very last day of school w my 8th graders, I surveyed them all and received SO MUCH positive feedback about my teaching, their favorite lessons, how they felt prepared for high school and my selflessness. My eyes were swollen by the end of the day. #ngsschat
A2: Just for fun I would say singing "Teach Three Dimensions" at the Peer Review Panel meeting last fall.
More seriously, felt very good about a presentation on Phenomena I did at #NSTA Area Conferences last fall (that I will do this fall too.) #NGSSChat
#NGSSchat A2: I've been talking about 3D science in my district for over 2 years. It does me good to finally hear second hand of Ts talking about phenomena and SEPs at the lunch table and on Twitter.
A2: I guess I kinda already answered Q2 with my Q1. I had several students who had a knack for asking the right question to lead us into what I had planned on covering next. It was like I had told them what to ask - but I hadn't! It just flowed so nicely. #ngsschat
A2: 1. Anytime I heard stories about Ss who were previously disengaged during science becoming engaged w/ our curriculum 2. Anytime a teacher said we made their lives easier 3. Incorporating phenomena intentionally when I wrote lessons #ngsschat#mySci

A2. I loved when the Ss were using their critical thinking, problem solving, desgning, creating, skills. in completing problem tasks to solve given items to use. Observing the different thinking atterns of solving the problems! #ngsschat
I think I need to sign up and attend. I loved going to @KATSorg when I was in KS - I missed that this last year. Maybe @STANYSorg conference can help fill that hole. #ngsschat

@TdiShelton, @STANYSorg, @KATSorg, @STANYSorg
Absolutely! Anytime Kathy reaches out for new articles, science teachers should jump of that experience!! I learned so much about my teaching when I wrote it! @KRScienceLady#ngsschat

Hey everyone! Jumping in late because, well, it’s the first week of school! Thank goodness @hhereau tagged me! I’m Whitney from KS teaching 8th Earth and space this year. #NGSSchat
Q2 these are all too hard! Such an incredible year. So much student growth and individual awesome things that happened for students. Getting choked up thinking about it. Crying by myself at the bar isn't cool! #NGSSchat
#NGSSchat A2: I've been talking about 3D science in my district for over 2 years. It does me good to finally hear second hand of Ts talking about phenomena and SEPs at the lunch table and on Twitter.
Q2 my greatest joy- seeing those who otherwise may have heavily struggled really understanding because of the use of explanatory modeling and discourse. Intentional use is magical! #NGSSchat
Right?! Such an incredible opportunity to be featured in that! I posted it on my class website so students and parents could read it and share in my ideas! #ngsschat
In reply to
@hhereau, @KRScienceLady, @wewright1234
Love this share speaking to "different thinking patterns" and perspectives of students sharing within the science community of their classroom! #NGSSchat
A2. I loved when the Ss were using their critical thinking, problem solving, desgning, creating, skills. in completing problem tasks to solve given items to use. Observing the different thinking atterns of solving the problems! #ngsschat
A3 continue - it did help me in the long run though because I realized I had been well trained in many areas of #NGSS and had started doing some things by default. #ngsschat
A3: I’m preparing for standards referenced grading this year so I was working on my rubrics and trying to decide how I wanted to align them with my district proficiency scale. Any fellow SRG teachers willing to offer advice would be most appreciated! #ngsschat
A3) My biggest issue was I lost focus, fell back on some bad habits, got caught up in a whirl wind of terrible stuff happening to our profession in my state. #NGSSChat
#NGSSchat A3: Wanting to help some Ts who resist my advice. Having too much desk work to get out in schools regularly. Feeling that I have no voice. #insecurities
Q3: Student sense-making doesn’t just happen overnight. It takes experiences, examples, discourse/discussion, and encouragement. Bringing wonder into the classroom is not easily done. #NGSSChat
A3: My big challenge last year was getting used to a new school in a new state with a totally weird schedule. I only teach each class 3xs a week (65 minute class periods), so it was important to plan well in order to fit everything in. #ngsschat
Can't complain after two days. Gearing up to finally get into some science. We have a bunch of prescribed stuff we have to do at the very beginning. #NGSSChat
A3 honestly coming up with phenomena that leads students where I want them to go for those productive noticings and wonderings. It takes a while, revision after revision, but its totally worth the time! #ngsschat
A3: Helping Ts embrace that it is doable, that it is what good #science instruction looks like, and to stop worrying that they must "teach to a test"!! #NGSSchat
A3 my biggest challenge last year was administration not understanding all the amazing NGSS shifts we were doing! I have changed schools, but this Stem Teaching Tool would have been very helpful last year! #NGSSChathttps://t.co/RZ8IEzXvEJ… https://t.co/f51zyV7gq3
A3: since NYSSLS just rolling out I need to do more to adapt assessment tasks to SEP and DCK's. Need more PD and practice on it. Only just starting #NGSSchat
A3. My greatest challenge was adjusting to being back in the classroom after being on sabbatical. Now, we are shifting to #NGSS, and I have to put them into practice with little to no support. #ngsschat
Q2 my greatest joy- seeing those who otherwise may have heavily struggled really understanding because of the use of explanatory modeling and discourse. Intentional use is magical! #NGSSchat
A3 My usually M.O. since the beginning of time - no concept of limits. I want to help or learn or lead and can't stop myself from engaging. Focusing on doing more for ME this year by finding where I can have the most impact! #sleep#exercise#facilitating#sciencePRP#NGSSchat
I hope to get some clarity in the coming weeks. I have some colleagues outside my district who will help me, plus #ngsschat is an amazing resource with no judgment
A3: One of my greatest challenges this past year was developing 2 STEM PDs for Greece CSD to experience science content in our community. Hawk banding and kayaking the Braddock Bay Ecosystem Restoration project of the Army Corp. Challenging but extremely rewarding! #ngsschat
Q2: Greatest joy was seeing ss work on a thermal energy project. They had total creativity for their presentations. Free reign. Skits, new reports, songs. #NGSSchat
A3: Most exhausting was taking our genius cooking times and turning into a 6 week summer elective. I didn’t get the cookbook part of it done. We made some great stuff. #ngsschat
A2: Many amazing moments working w/Ts in all things #science and #NGSS, but taking my little sis @DealJulie to her first #NSTA conference in #Atlanta was ❤️❤️❤️
My first goal is to everyday find a way to interact with my kids as they come in the door. So far I am high fiving every kid as they walk. Today, I got kids trying new high fives. #NGSSChat
A4: Goal would be premature. I wa tossing around the idea of tearing down and rebuilding a bike for math/science. Probably with my 6ths rather than my 5ths. Need to think through the intagration. #ngsschat
A4: This will be my first year shifting to standards referenced grading so my goal is to be able to succuessfilky use my rubrics and align them in a way that makes the most sense for my district’s language, my standards and my students. #ngsschat
A3:Greatest challenge was writing, implementing and teaching all new curriculum with my team at the same time while having several outside professional responsibilities. Accepting we wouldn't be "perfect" right away, but we need a good foundation to work with #NGSSchat
Q4: My instructional goal is to roll out modeling with whiteboards and the Talk Moves so that Ss can lead academic discussions. My general goal is that the Ss are comfortable to take risks and challenge each other through questioning #NGSSChat
Time for the regular announcement. Please DM @VogelWendi or myself for a week to host @NGSS_tweeps as it is a great learning and sharing experience. #NGSSChat
#NGSSchat A4: One goal is to infiltrate my local school culture with language of the NGSS - 3D Thursday e-mails w. phenomena and how they can be used and contests that reward those who learn and apply NGSS principles.
A4 I want to use an anchor that we can put together over time for every unit and have tight coherence for my students. I’m adding “what did we do yesterday, why, and what do we need to do today,” as my bell ringer every day so I can stay accountable. #NGSSchat
A4. My goal is for the Ss to believe in themselves, we learn by making mistakes and having to problem solve! More than one attempt may be necessary to achieve success and learn from mistakes! So that our Ss can grow their wings and fly! #ngsschat
That’s a great goal! I kept my direct instruction to under 10 minutes and made sure the rest of the period was dedicated to partner/group work or co-teaching. So important! #ngsschat
A 4 - my goal is to use more consensus discussions to decide on classroom routines etc. our next consensus discussion will be about our class clap! #NGSSchat
I am sorry to hear $ is an issue to secure needed training. Linking up with other like minded teachers along with self study and reflection are essential. #NGSSChat
A4: My goal is to improve how often we revisit the DQB and more student journaling. I created a formal DQB for my classroom and a journal format for my students to use. Also join the chats! #NGSSchate
A4: I'm teaching a new class (#materialsscience), so my goal is to develop that into a class that Ss who want to be Engineers, as well as Ss who might want to head straight to work can benefit from. There's a need for both! Also working on making 9th chem stronger. #ngsschat
A4 My goal for the year this year is to make my 8th grade science class even better. Last year was was my 1st year after being in HS for many years. Looking to refine lessons. #ngsschat
#NGSSchat it also helps to go look at Quality Examples of Science Lessons and Units at https://t.co/x6SXbh26Q7 Read the rubric AND the feedback and think about how your lesson(s) compare(s)
A4: I need advice. Is the trial and errr process of recreating a candy bar that far off from science? I’m putting together cooking lessons and blending my curric. https://t.co/g2pJBqe34P#ngsschat#ditchbook
Q4: to fully incorporate @MsAnnieBrock growth mindset lessons each month. To adjust grading towards mastery based. To have coteacher lead lessons & to begin design of 3D assessments. #NGSSchat
A4: Develop/improve a model for PD that causes measurable shifts in instructional practice. (Clarification statement: may include online components, newsletters/emails, opps for reflection and peer observation) :) #ngsschat

Yes. This is something I hope everyone takes to hear to night.
Just as we want students comfortable with making mistakes, we as educators have to be comfortable with the idea that we will try things and sometimes some thing WON'T WORK.
And that's OK!
#NGSSChat
I call the contest 3D-30 (30 challenges about 3D science). I probably should put it all in a folder or on a site and share. #immediatetodolist#NGSSchat
A5) I would look into the #scicomm hashtag and @realscientists as they are a great way for all of us to help improve our science knowledge and a great way to network. #NGSSChat
Welcome Lisa! We are sharing our goals for this year in the classroom and
Q5: What hashtags, chats or resources can you recommend to help pur #NGSSchat PLN meet their goals, find community, and grow professionally?
#NGSSchat
A5: My Is to start eith a real product and think it thru backwards so I’m inclined to look st maker folks, cooks, craftsmen. YouTube is usually my go to place to learn how to go something. #ngsschat
#iteachphysics is a good hashtag (and I believe they do a chat too) for physics teachers. I get a lot of support and info about workshops, classes, etc from @NSTA . I always recommend people get involved with their state Science organization as well. #ngsschat
A5: My bias is to start eith a real product and think it thru backwards so I’m inclined to look st maker folks, cooks, craftsmen. YouTube is usually my go to place to learn how to go something. #ngsschat
A5: I'm a member* of this organization called NSTA. Maybe you've heard of it.
I'd recommend it to everyone.
They have this NGSS guy there who is slightly odd, but the website and conferences have some great stuff on 3D learning.
#ngsschat
*and employee
The #NSTA PD Committee is co-hosting the #NSTAchat next Thursday 8/23 9:00 EST w/ @caahayes The amazing committee members will have some great resources & ideas to share! #NSTAchat
A5 each state seems to have their own account. You can generally look at it with the abbreviation plus sci at the end. I’ve found some great stuff just playing with state hashtags! #kssci#oksci etc! #NGSSchat
Thanks Adam-- he will archive this chat too with all of the great support and hashtag/ resource recs as well as our documentation of our goals! #NGSSchat
Before you all go tonight please follow & share your classroom w/@ngssSfocus Sharing the awesome things you & your Ss are doing can inspire so many Ts #ngsschat
Q4: My goal is to challenge every student and teach them that taking risks and making mistakes helps them learn. Second, I will strive to keep using journals as a tool for learning and assessing. Third, engaging phenomena and driving question that hook Ss. #NGSSCHAT
