I really don't think I was ever really "afraid". I tried using AOL in my 1 classroom computer many many years ago.
A1: New might mean - something that everyone is worried about at some point. But we must embrace the
My name's Elizabeth, I'm new to this!
A1: being an emerging educator who has taught only 6 years, I have always tried to incorporate tech, degrees just have varied.

A1) When I got my first iMac , I wasn't sure where to start but the tech guy said do what you can to break it. :-)

A1: Never afraid, but have felt limited by the available technology at my school
A1 oh, to have been in class with all this tech! you remember TRS 80 and tape drives? Do love introducing tech to grad students
Ashley here from MHK. 1st grade teacher ready to get my chat on!
We are glad you are here, Elizabeth! You are showing Halloween bravery by trying something new!
A1: student teaching, I had a classroom with 1:1 Chromebooks, I was not super comfortable with Google Classroom, LOVE it now!
A1 I think some Ts might be afraid of how to intro to Ss. is coming out with a StepByStep intro for Ts
A1 I don't think I was ever afraid. I grew up around tech, and have always been comfortable on or near the leading edge.
A1:was afraid+excited first time i taught a 3D printing course in the country (Pakistan) was wonderful tho+ kids were SO engaged
A1: Inquiry based learning online can be scary with so many resources. Hard to begin, hard to find reliable sites!
Welcome Ashley... I'm slow where is MHK?
Sorry I'm Tim and running a little late to
I'm so fortunate to be in a 1:1 school--often something that I take for granted.
A1) Never really afraid. I've been using edtech since 1994 with Apple IIe computers and Lego/Logo robotics.
hi ! Cherise from CA. Stopping by before I take my kids out for some fun 🎃
Yep... it was when they first came out. Been using a Performa 630CD transporting from home, with a long phone cable
Seamlessly integrate new tech like iPads and presentation tools can be overwhelming and fearful. https://t.co/tOXfB9NATv
Q1: When were you afraid to try in the classroom? Why?
A1.I think we need to change the traditional model of written homework.Doing written homework for an hour teaches nothing
haha! I'm sitting by the front door, too (inside though) and getting up for trick or treaters every few mins
A1: never afraid, well ok a bit when I knew my Ss would figure "it" out faster than I was ready for...😬
A1 cont'd: Still struggling w/ how to inc. social media more. Finally started that class YouTube Acct for sharing s work
A1 going back to teaching after a long absence. Everything seemed scary & I didn't want to look foolish https://t.co/ZrCGj9iKo5
Q1: When were you afraid to try in the classroom? Why?
I'm currently in a 2:1 and I sometimes have to careful in my planning
Agreed! It's often easier to try one thing at a time. Master one skill, then add another!
Ron from Houston. That doodle had me going.
You probably have more experience than all of us at this!
Yeah, but AOL was the walking dead, a zombie. :)
A1: I was afraid when i got thrown right into using technology at a 1:1 school. I wasn't sure how i was going to teach math
I could for sure see how that's a challenge. I don't miss the days of having to check out labs.
How did you push through your fear, Nancy?
A1a brave T friend of ours attempted using tech. but failed. What did we learn...the Ss still learned! https://t.co/8N16Jl5gKV
That was the only game in town at that time.
Agreed! My type A personality needs integration and use to be smooth. One step at a time, every time!
Question to A1 - if you are never afraid to use new - are you pushing your own boundaries far enough?
A1.Homework should involve telling what went on in school today,It should be going for a walk.Write a story in 7 words
Q2 coming up in 1 minute…
A1: I was a summer school teacher aide for middle schoolers. I wasn't sure how to keep them on track
We just started Twitter Friday's where students can share learning moments from school! Kick off this week
Amy assistant principal from Wilton, CT joining a bit late
Great question! https://t.co/YfVx5MK1bS
Question to A1 - if you are never afraid to use new - are you pushing your own boundaries far enough?
Q2: When did a new lesson w/ turn out to be a spook-tech-u-lar success?
Eek! how did you handle it?
A1 I remember when my classroom tech consisted of Motorola Sidekicks and four half-functioning apple G4 computers.
So much to be said about failing forward here! S's and T's learned together.
How did you use the tech to teach math?
Agreed! It should be an adventure and a challenge, but definitely not a fear.
A1: early days of internet searching always turned out ugly right? Any Budweiser frogs singing out in your class?
A1: I was skeptical abt using Twitter...until the & PLN floodgates opened. Major tool!
ah, it was awesome! Since then have taught multiple courses, LOVE every single one!
A2) When I conducted 25 Hour of Code classroom lessons last December.
luckily I was standing right next to the S, I just smoothly blocked her view and turned off the computer
created a school hashtag this year as a starting point--now to get the s's on board more.
A2: when I started a lesson off with a Kohot! survey
I do too! Do you think was easier or harder to manage back then?
Yup! I tell my Ts to embrace the WTF moments. Willingness to Fail.
A2: Google Apps changed the way I delivered curriculum & engagement of students.
Me too! Once I realized the value though, Twitter changed the trajectory of my career!
A2 i feel like almost every time we try a new lesson at it works out!! They're all spook-tech-acular
A1: I feel like everyone is afraid until they try -then they love it !
later we had a great session on how we might find something that is inappropriate and what should we do about it
dedicated learners! ( and candy junkies!)
I love the Hour of Code! What was the best part of that experience?
Definitely on these - finding what works and why is a great, fun, challenge.
A2 ended up "app smashing" to create movies from from really good writing samples on
A2: when my first class used president to do a presentation rather than PowerPoint for an intro to market in class.
Hi ! Sorry for being late! We are a tech startup in New Zealand with a passion for education! https://t.co/irJJxCwqw0
For my Alg 2 and Alg 3 I use schoology to help S get the content and have youtube videos that go with the lesson.
The best part was seeing engaged kindergarten through 5th graders!
Awesome! You turned a scary situation into a valuable learning experience!
A2: used as a backchannel during Socratic seminar, before backchannels became popular!
A2 when we taught our BOE and Folks at City Hall lessons using changed our world!
A2: Ss always love a kahoot review or pre- assessment. They also love having the choice of technology to respond to a Q
Hello! I am experimenting with Twitter as an educational tool.
A2) When I had a student create a Flash movie that made most of the flash on the web look like child's play.
great Q. Harder w/o an PLN like we have now on Twitter, so many more models & shared knowledge
Welcome to ! Q2: When did a new lesson w/ turn out to be a spook-tech-u-lar success?
A2: Really excited to see my s's buy into their student blogs--Take them more seriously than I expected and has gone well.
A2 When talking about and demoing high speed Internet - had a total hardware failure.
same for me. Can't imagine my prof life without it now! So many great connections daily
Have you used Socrative for anything else?
Welcome to ! Feel free to join the conversation! Glad you are here!
My breakouts were Google Earth, , InDesign, Acrobat & Photoshop.
A1. Challenging to get some Ts past that fear. Doesn't always help to tell them the Ss will get it.
A2: Devices in hands = Active personal research. Computers let students access plenteous news stories other resources
Continued on enthusiastically explaining what I would have demo'd. Didn't crash and burn, but it was embarasing.
A2) Maybe 15 years ago when a student working at an auto parts store impressed his boss by creating a PPT. for him to use.
Strongest use of edtech IMO--research and authentic sharing of learning.
sounds awesome! What do you use them for? writing projects or multimedia? (or both?)
Yes it is! Teachers need support and encouragement to try something new just like our students!
A2.We need to examine the purpose and value of homework.Coding, research, stories in 7 words can be enjoyable.HW must engage Ss
Sorry I think the cast of Les Miz, or Oliver keep coming to the door asking for stuff.
Q3 coming up in one minute…
A2: Some of my best lessons are when my students are playing a Kahoot review game.
A2 Last year when I had our whole school participate in hour of code.
I went w/ Edublogs this year for their teacher management ability--grading isn't most simple, but works.
A2 I hacked our wireless speakers and played haunted mansion music during lessons, my colleagues had no clue what was happening
A2: When a student asked to participate in our new digital sign initiative because they wanted to learn how it worked!
Billy Teacher from North NJ coming in a little late.
A2 it's always great to see just how far beyond the Ss can take it https://t.co/TQvjIVCOgW
A2) When I had a student create a Flash movie that made most of the flash on the web look like child's play.
Now that I created a class YouTube, I may try to implement a bit more into regular classwork.
Esp if the sharing of learning involves some kind of creating. :-)
Q3: When did a new lesson w/ turn out to be a spook-tech-u-lar failure? What did you learn?
that's great! Always a pleasure to see them meaningfully engaged
it's a fancier version of a ppt maker that is online. It's completely free. More options than google slides or PPT.
A2 - Introducing / I was nervous at how Ss would latch after doing more interactive things, they loved it!!
A2: When my Ss can choose want they want to learn about and create something to show us what they learned.
A2 now everyone has learned to change the default passwords!
Love reading and being a part of so I can learn from others and have awesome Ss experiences!
A3: Too many failures to count!Usually glitches with tech or not careful planning.
EduBlogs--HS 11th and 12th grade mostly.
A3: Internet connection is always an issue. If only all schools could afford sufficient (and efficient) internet!
A3: Ss finished the activity within a few minutes and then played online games. I need to plan more challenging activities.
A2: cont. It allows me to see where my students are immediately and I can address students individually.
A2: When a small student tech group turned into an organized leadership team ready to make change happen
A2 anytime I get to demo an tool for my preservice Ts & they go on to meaningfully use it in their classrooms
A3 Not a specific incident, . But usually when WiFi was sketchy.
A3: However failures always a learning experience. First Attempt At Learning
That is so true! Without adequate infrastructure, even the best planned lesson w/ can fail :-(
A3 - recent last year when using - I never anticipated students using the markers so fast, we ran out!
A3: intro'd docs w/ Ss, they learned commenting, started like it was FB & some comments = not nice! 😂
A3: my first online test. I didn't try out the tech beforehand and half of it worked for the Ss.
A3 Let's just say that now I have multiple layers of backup approaches :) Presentation on my computer, online, on a USB drive
Do you feel you have adequate internet at your school?
A3: I had my ss create children lit e-books to tell story of Constitution--Failure--too little choice and time for ss to succeed
always great when Ss take the initiative. Moving from consumers to producers.
A3: I tried to do AR in a lesson and it failed miserably. I found that Ss would rather just watch a youtube video.
Correction: First Attempt In Learning
Teachers can't fear failure...it's how we learn and it's how we show our students that failure is an opportunity.
A3 almost always because of a rush to get to end or objective rather than relishing the journey learning together. !
A2.Our pupils forget most of what we teach them. They will remember us their teachers forever.Lets be good and kind to them
This depends on the day - It has crashed on multiple occasions. (Back-up plans on paper are a definite necessity!)
A3. (Cont) Then hold their phone over a a problem to see the youtube video I placed in the AR program.
A3: Connecting buddies on GHO can be difficult bc we can't always get the connections to work or have sound issues, etc.
A3: When I tried to do an online test for my summer reading and didn't assign any points so everyone got a zero!
Does anyone have experience and/or advice for working with preservice teachers who are reluctant to experiment with technology?
It's always wise to have a backup plan!
A3) I created an eBook for a iTunes U class. Published it incorrectly san links.... they were big kids, I fixed it.
That is correct. great to be here Greg!
yes!! Element of choice and then sharing w/an audience is awesome
Good for you for trying something new, even if it wasn't successful! That's how we grow!
TRUTH! https://t.co/8kL8l3WnR4
Teachers can't fear failure...it's how we learn and it's how we show our students that failure is an opportunity.
find out why they are reluctant - is it fear they won't have tools in their schools, or just the tech
For sure! Most often what leads to struggle in tech and anything that allows s's to explore/create.
Make us try! I am one - sometimes we need a little push. :)
Yes! It is always wise to test in advance when possible.
Q4 coming up in one minute…
The Ss really like what it could do with the dollar bill but i'm not techy enough to pull something like that off.
A3: Failure is inevitable for innovation and discovery! And it can often lead to new discoveries! https://t.co/ViVNCoalf7
I bet or might have some suggestions!
I think modeling and showing how to them who are used to "traditional" style of teaching/learning is challenge.

Q4: How can we help other educators be less fearful of ?
If only this were the mindset of admins. 20+ years ago when I started. We have come a long way. https://t.co/2I49v2EdaC
Teachers can't fear failure...it's how we learn and it's how we show our students that failure is an opportunity.
A3: My first student choice tech project. Not enough structure, samples or support to get it done right
I know that my Student-t's struggle w/ complete and authentic implementation of tech outside of PPT.
We are looking to modify our current curriculum in this direction
the AR site i used was Aurasma.
A4 Show them, how to use it.
yep, NO CHOICES! Undermines my rep as a Teddy Bear, but we can't accept newbies holding back culture change!
A4: Wish we could make them see tech thru the eyes of their students and PLAY with it to learn more.
they you have to show them that modeling failure is the best inspiration to their students
Present it as instruction. If you can execute lessons on paper, challenge yourself and face the challenge!
A4) Help them out, teach them. BTW I have a Tech Tuesday to assist scheduled for tomorrow at 7:45 ,come join us.
I think getting them into classrooms that "do tech well" makes a big diff.! Somehow help them get into those?
20 years ago? I see this attitude today, well, OK, yesterday.
A4: Serve as mentors and lead small group PD in your school. https://t.co/69YoYsFWDt

A4 it's a long process, understand that change won't happen overnight & keep trying + focus on learning https://t.co/8jG2bhB225
Q4: How can we help other educators be less fearful of ?
A4 Good PD and leadership along with a healthy dose of community support.
A4don't be afraid to share your failures. Ts learn best from others. Our YouTube channel is all about trying, failing, & sharing
Im late to the party, I was grading papers for report cards. Kali from Georiga, 8th grade phys science.
A4: We have to be willing to share our failures - and we have to not judge those who fail - it will happen to all of us
A4) Model for them, co-teach, provide pd, let them observe others, give time to learn & explore.
We tested connections but sometimes it just won't stay connected. Ss learn to call back & use white boards.
A4: Being a resource and trying new things. Don't evangelize.
Wow! What program did you use to create this?
A4 when you introduce new tech, share with other Ts. I was in HS, so once one teacher used something, it's easierfor the next
I think the most difficult part when 1st implementing is proper scaffolding/realizing not to step too far away.
A4: effective modeling and mentoring for those that are reluctant.
A4.Using tech learning can be pupil led.Such is the case in my Sschool STEAM Room
Trust your people, set high expectations and provide support to them as a person and a professional.
A4: no easy answers, perhaps a "walk in my shoes" experience, especially kid perspective?
A4: I think through training and given time to learn how to use it can help teachers.
Also think, working w/ Ts and creating lesson w/ tech, being there to co-teach, makes it easier
How did it go the second time around, or has that not happened yet?
yes! Modeling works wonders
A4b T's and S's both love understanding and sharing tricks, the magic behind the curtain!
A4: Present it as instruction. If you can execute lessons on paper, challenge yourself and face the challenge!
Completely agree! If you want change, you have to hire/support those willing to be a part of it!
A4: innovation is about having compassion. If we really listen to Ts, then we'll help them find the best tools for them
A4) I am pretty tech savvy, so my role is to help when needed. Being uplifting, positive, and not overwhelming.
That is a good point. Scaffolding is important. Sounds like you learned from the experience, though!
Yes, begin at lowest level of tech use "replacement".
A4: Support them. Make time to answer questions & check up. Share your tech failures. Lightens the mood some.

A4 Level PD opportunities for staff to self-select where they are comfortable learning new tech for their classrooms
AGREE! It's so reassuring to hear how others have learned from their failures! https://t.co/1EoYtgHrFA
A4: We have to be willing to share our failures - and we have to not judge those who fail - it will happen to all of us
A4 Focus on one app / program at a time until comfortable and then add another, don't overwhelm with too many options
A4: personalized PD would be nice, too. I pick what I need, a trusted peer helps, each 1, teach 1-scale up via Ts
can be a route to centering student expertise coupled w teacher support
telling colleagues that it was a struggle for you to figure it out lightens the mood too
So much can be said for seeing it in action and being a part of it as well.
A4: Make it less overwhelming. Tell them to focus and be very good at one edtechy thing. Be patient.
No mandates, no edicts. Be a tech whisperer. Pull, don't push. https://t.co/qGor5TmsZ6
A4) Model for them, co-teach, provide pd, let them observe others, give time to learn & explore.
Good point! Baby steps can lead to bigger steps. Start small and build confidence to move forward!
We're still getting used to the idea of teaching on our own! We need to learn about new methods of instruction -help
Q5 coming up in one minute…
