Ryan Schrock, Elementary Principal checking in and excited to moderate our chat tonight from Traverse City, MI... where we just had a snow day last week! Ha! #MEMSPAchat
Q1: “We rarely create something different until we experience something different.” #InnovatorsMindset@gcouros
If you could wave a magic wand, what innovative changes would you like to see at your school?
#MEMSPAchat
A1) . A magic wand...oh, so many things. I will start with job embedded pd for everyone...staff is anyone who draws a check...we ALL can learn and our school would benefit in so many ways! Planned, systemic, without boundaries. #memspachat
Well, personally, I would like to see #StudentsTakingCharge of their own learning in Learner-Active, Technology-Infused Classrooms everywhere!!!! (But then again, I wrote the book LOL) #MEMSPAchat
A1: The structural design of my building would be the biggest change.I would love to design it to be more 21st century friendly and flexible. #MEMSPAchat
Q1: “We rarely create something different until we experience something different.” #InnovatorsMindset@gcouros
If you could wave a magic wand, what innovative changes would you like to see at your school?
#MEMSPAchat
A1: Would love a space for a Ss to be creative, build, explore and create projects to build future employability skills! Been working with staff/colleagues to make this a reality! @hz_pow@mrsjhebel@MPSbiedermann#makerspace#MEMSPAchat
Q1: “We rarely create something different until we experience something different.” #InnovatorsMindset@gcouros
If you could wave a magic wand, what innovative changes would you like to see at your school?
#MEMSPAchat
Hello- Michelle from St Joe! If I had a magic wand we’d be able to accelerate our knowledge, resources and approach to SEL and family engagement. #MEMSPAchat
Q1: “We rarely create something different until we experience something different.” #InnovatorsMindset@gcouros
If you could wave a magic wand, what innovative changes would you like to see at your school?
#MEMSPAchat
A1: Removing grade levels and having kids progress through school based on ability and comprehension, not just because it is the end of the year. #MEMSPAchat
Q2: The Innovation Gap: Instruction
No educator wants to use a strategy that’s not effective. What innovative strategies do we know work better than what we’re doing? Why aren’t we doing those things?
#MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat A1: That is a great question. 1:1 for computers, classrooms that a big with no desk in rows, flexible comfortable home like seats. Learning that is interactive and collaborative with others outside the classroom.
A2 #MEMSPAchat) How about students as problem-finders, innovators, and entrepreneurs? Did a TED-Ed talk on that. We're talking about that now on #LATICchat (read the posts later!) https://t.co/IPztLuIjZw
Q2: The Innovation Gap: Instruction

Q1: “We rarely create something different until we experience something different.” #InnovatorsMindset@gcouros
If you could wave a magic wand, what innovative changes would you like to see at your school?
#MEMSPAchat
A2: skilled guided reading and math instruction - data based, strategic, and focused . We’re on our way for sure but there’s more we can do to ensure equity #memspachat
Q2: The Innovation Gap: Instruction
No educator wants to use a strategy that’s not effective. What innovative strategies do we know work better than what we’re doing? Why aren’t we doing those things?
#MEMSPAchat
A2:It can be difficult for teachers to adjust innovative strategies in the classroom for fear of change or failure. We must continue to bring everyone up to date with instructional strategies that are successful & help adults get through their discomfort with change #MEMSPAchat
Q2: The Innovation Gap: Instruction
No educator wants to use a strategy that’s not effective. What innovative strategies do we know work better than what we’re doing? Why aren’t we doing those things?
#MEMSPAchat
A2: Consistent student led goal setting, student driven lessons, workshopping....they are hard and sometimes hard to see the immediate results because it is messy #memspachat
Q3: The Innovation Gap: Curriculum
How do you encourage teachers to pull learning off the paper and/or think outside the box when it comes to curriculum?
#MEMSPAchat
A2 Small group guided reading instruction in middle school and high school. Tradition and curriculum planning dictate that secondary students all read the same text at the same time...but this is definitely not best practice. #memspachat
A2: Using technology as a true enrichment of the curriculum, not just a substitution for paper/pencil. It’s challenging to give our teachers the time and resources to make this happen, we are moving in the right direction. #MEMSPAchat
A3 Our district has teachers who double as Technology Instructional Leaders (TILs) They introduce ideas and innovative ways to do traditional things. The sharing is non-judgmental and low pressure. Ts love learning from peers #MEMSPAchat
A2: I'm not sure there is a specific answer for this question... I think we need be focused more on matching strategies with Ss need. Find what works for each of our Ss. #MEMSPAchat
Q2: The Innovation Gap: Instruction
No educator wants to use a strategy that’s not effective. What innovative strategies do we know work better than what we’re doing? Why aren’t we doing those things?
#MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat A3:. Encouraging them and praising them to take risks. Status quote is not okay. Push the envelope. I love when my teachers try something new and reward them for it.
Q3: The Innovation Gap: Curriculum
How do you encourage teachers to pull learning off the paper and/or think outside the box when it comes to curriculum?
#MEMSPAchat
A3: @Flipgrid@Socrative, Makerspace, creation, choice, genius hour, Spoderweb Discussions. There are SO many options!! Love that #QuincyOn Ts use them all!! #MEMSPAchat
Q3: The Innovation Gap: Curriculum
How do you encourage teachers to pull learning off the paper and/or think outside the box when it comes to curriculum?
#MEMSPAchat
By making sure they know its ok to think outside the box. Making sure they know failures are ok & we can learn from them. Was shocked to meet with a T recently and be told “I didnt know I could do that”#MEMSPAchat
A3 Model awesome ways that learning can come to life. I just bought Kim Thomas Mathivate book and it's soooo cool! Until we see those strategies, we often have no idea of the possibilities. Encourage interest-driven PD for staff. #memspachat
A3: As a new leader, I have enjoyed getting to know the teachers I serve. I think this can be accomplished by encouragement and teamwork. Embrace mistakes, learn from them & insist we fail forward, TOGETHER! #MEMSPAchat
Q3: The Innovation Gap: Curriculum
How do you encourage teachers to pull learning off the paper and/or think outside the box when it comes to curriculum?
#MEMSPAchat
Q3: I continue to have conversations with them & send them ideas, links & resources in my weekly updates. I get excited when we brainstorm together & they feel my passion for learning. #MEMSPAchat
Q3: The Innovation Gap: Curriculum
How do you encourage teachers to pull learning off the paper and/or think outside the box when it comes to curriculum?
#MEMSPAchat
A3: Ss engagement is huge! Are ss productive and engaged with paper/pencil? What does it really tell you about their learning? I started with basic questions like this and transformation was amazing. Powerful learning can’t be captured on paper!#MEMSPAchat
Q3: The Innovation Gap: Curriculum
How do you encourage teachers to pull learning off the paper and/or think outside the box when it comes to curriculum?
#MEMSPAchat
A4: When you know your "why"! For us, it was when we realized that we needed to personalize lessons for students who may need extra help with content. Therefore, it was important for us to show Ts how to make flipped lessons! #MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat A4: You need to get input from staff but also it we as leaders can tell T's are to comfortable and need to challenge them it is a good time.
#MEMSPAchat
Hold a faculty meeting with a sign that says "Critique-Free Zone" and have teachers generate lots of ideas with the norm that all ideas count and none are shot down. Build a culture of creativity. #MEMSPAchat It begins with the SuperSkills of Leadership!
A4: Listening deeply and being in classrooms informs@our mtg and pd time. Our Leadership Team structure helps set the course toward innovation #memspachat
Q5: The Innovation Gap: Schedules
Timing can be everything when creating master schedules. What are some innovative ways you’ve leveraged the process to achieve academic results?
#MEMSPAchat
We first have to know both what they need and want. Hopefully they are the same thing for everyone. A one size fits all approach probably wont work and isn’t innovative #MEMSPAchat
A4: Provide the PD needed for growth as a staff. Deliver it in a collaborative way and high leverage techniques as they process the learning - like sketch notes, or inside outside circles etc. #memspachat
Very helpful to share out links & ideas. I began to share my weekly updates on the Google Classroom I created for our staff. Teachers are now using it to share ideas as well. #MEMSPAchat
Q4: When I can see my staff need a change, I make up crazy fun scavenger hunt PD that takes them around our outside of the building. Twice they ended in a restaurant and we ate at the end. It rejuvenates us all. #MEMSPAchat
A4) Make sure the PD is transformational and models innovation ... engagement, empowerment, efficacy ... (ok, ok, another book of mine on executive function0 ... so important for students AND teachers. Empower your teachers! #MEMSPAchat
A4 If our objectives aren't being met or if there's still room for improvement, change it up. Try something new that's supported by data. Or if staff express an interest in something else - follow their passions to encourage them. #memspachat
I heard an author (Nancy Johnson) years ago say that on April 1, she called all her teachers to the office, gave them each a big bag of feathers, and told them that they had to teach their content all day just using feathers. #MEMSPAchat
A5: We are commited to common and protected time for ELA and math instruction building wide, offering before school support for learning , and building in common planning time #memspachat
Q5: The Innovation Gap: Schedules
Timing can be everything when creating master schedules. What are some innovative ways you’ve leveraged the process to achieve academic results?
#MEMSPAchat
A5: We are starting to look at common planning times for ways to offer targeted interventions for students. No longer are we able to say that these are "my" students, but they all have to be "our" students! Super excited about this! #MEMSPAchat
A4: I am lurking and learning on this one. Staff PD is something @KatQuain and I talk about often... how can we make it more beneficial for all staff! #MEMSPAchat#teachmePLN
A5: find any chance to give collaboration time to teams - assemblies (half stays and half staff has collaboration), leadership buddies - teachers alternate doing the lesson with both classes to release their partner for PLC time. #memspachat
Q6: The Innovation Gap: Staffing
What are some innovative ways you identify, place, and retain talented staff to impact student achievement? What do you do when the data doesn’t support those decisions?
#MEMSPAchat
A5: We are looking at 2 content specialists in early EL for next year. Trying to put people in their strengths and not have to focus on all of the different areas in their day. Still working out the wrinkles!! #MEMSPAchat
A5: This is my struggle right now. How do we find the time that doesn’t exist. How do catch up low readers, and low math, while not neglecting the rest of the child. And how to do so with just 2 sections/grade #MEMSPAchat
A4: Exactly! Staff needs are so important! We do surveys after PD too so we can make sure we capture their needs. My staff also took the lead and started their own lunch time learning and Twitter chats to share innovations #memspachat#mortonchat#lovemystaff#selfdrivenlearners
A4: I am lurking and learning on this one. Staff PD is something @KatQuain and I talk about often... how can we make it more beneficial for all staff! #MEMSPAchat#teachmePLN
A5) In the Learner-Active, Technology-Infused Classroom, students schedule their own time. Why? Just watch from 3:51 ...
#MEMSPAchathttps://t.co/Y8FSVfUclq
Q5: My school is small, so we meet in small groups to discuss students classes based upon what each students emotional & academic needs are. We specialize in emotional impairment. #MEMSPAchat
Q5: The Innovation Gap: Schedules
Timing can be everything when creating master schedules. What are some innovative ways you’ve leveraged the process to achieve academic results?
#MEMSPAchat
A6: rigorous multistep approach to hiring helps a lot! A strong community culture helps support innovation and retention. Concerns addressed with support and expectation in hopes of improvement #MEMSPAchat
Q6: The Innovation Gap: Staffing
What are some innovative ways you identify, place, and retain talented staff to impact student achievement? What do you do when the data doesn’t support those decisions?
#MEMSPAchat
Q7: The Innovation Gap: School Budgets
Is it really money that stops innovation in our schools? If so, what is a dollar amount required for innovative programming? If not, what stops you from trying something new?
#MEMSPAchat
Q6: I try to build on staffs talents & build their confidence in thinking outside the box continuously. I don’t worry about the data because RELATIONSHIPS are the key to learning. The data will come once the relationship is cultivated. #MEMSPAchat
Q6: The Innovation Gap: Staffing
What are some innovative ways you identify, place, and retain talented staff to impact student achievement? What do you do when the data doesn’t support those decisions?
#MEMSPAchat
A6: Constantly grow and develop the talent in your teachers with researched based practices. Sometimes the data takes time to show - if it’s a research based best practice, revise and adjust but don’t bail before the results have a chance to deliver. #MEMSPAchat
A6:...agree with @TLiMPrincipal ...grow and empower them to sustain initiatives and lead new ones...get their input into those decisions as well. #MEMSPAchat
Hey #MEMSPAchat friends ... I'm guest facilitating a special chat on executive function next Thursday at 7:30pm for one half hour right before your chat ... join me!
A6: We are starting to ask different questions in the interview process. More questions that relate to our Saline Area Schools' Compass and Student Attributes instead of the standard questions. #MEMSPAchat
A7: Fear of failure. When we have "success" students by society's standards, it is difficult to change. However, by not, we may be short-changing our kids of what the world is turning in to. #MEMSPAchat
A7: it’s the fear of change that stands in the way for us. Being comfortable can prevent innovation. Listening and responding strategically to the stages of concern and CBAM empowers shared leadership. #memspachat
Q7: The Innovation Gap: School Budgets
Is it really money that stops innovation in our schools? If so, what is a dollar amount required for innovative programming? If not, what stops you from trying something new?
#MEMSPAchat
A7 Money is a LARGE part of innovation but not the only part. It doesn't matter so much as the dollar amount to bring innovation as it does the MINDSET #MEMSPAchat
A7: It is definitely not money that stops innovation. It’s so easy to spend money in things not furthering our mission/vision - don’t get caught up in that. Spend money on innovation that supports the right work. #MEMSPAchat
A7: I'm not sure it's almighty dollar (although it's helpful) I think too often what stops us is two fold... fear of failure and the idea of "we've always done it this way"... #MEMSPAchat
Q7: The Innovation Gap: School Budgets
Is it really money that stops innovation in our schools? If so, what is a dollar amount required for innovative programming? If not, what stops you from trying something new?
#MEMSPAchat
Q8: “The arrogance of success is to think that what you did yesterday will be sufficient for tomorrow.” - William Pollard
What innovative changes will you make as you begin planning for next week? next month? next year?
#MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat A7:. Money helps but do not need it to be innovative. If you want it to happen it will but if you are in a toxic environment and a stagnant school innovation will not happen
A7b) ... I had a group of teachers design a three-room #LATIC classroom in which they needed couches, book racks, and a ton of other things ... they wrote letters to parents and community members. Trucks were arriving to drop off goods to them. #MEMSPAchat
A7:.. most times it seems that it's hard to see the forest through the trees..reflective practices are Paramount.. difficult to step back during the year....great players are made during the off-season...#MEMSPAchat
Q7: The structure of the school day restricts innovation. I need more PD time with my staff for better planning, researching & learning from other schools. The union contracts can also have an impact and cause restrictions to occur. #MEMSPAchat
Q7: The Innovation Gap: School Budgets
Is it really money that stops innovation in our schools? If so, what is a dollar amount required for innovative programming? If not, what stops you from trying something new?
#MEMSPAchat
A8 "Good is the enemy of GREAT." -Jim Collins. We need to keep up the conversation on how to get better and improve our work through systemic change. #MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat A8:. Continue to have conversations with teachers administrators well where we are and where we're going next. Growth mindset!!! Always trying to get better
Are you near a University? I have a client who has a cadre of MAT students who intern with them. They have substitute approval and they are in the classrooms all the time as interns. When the principals need, they can pull Ts for part of the day for PD and PLCs. #MEMSPAchat
A8: investing in time with my PLN and encouraging others to do the same will help us with our goals of expert practice, targeted response systems and family engagement #memspachat
Q8: “The arrogance of success is to think that what you did yesterday will be sufficient for tomorrow.” - William Pollard
What innovative changes will you make as you begin planning for next week? next month? next year?
#MEMSPAchat
A7: money plays a part. But innovation can happen with the tools you have or by not using them. I think the barrier can come from “good enough” #MEMSPAchat
Q8: I talked with one teacher today about this. We want to repaint, get new flooring, & have students paint a mural on the concrete wall to show their art & contribution to upgrading our building. #MEMSPAchat
Q8: “The arrogance of success is to think that what you did yesterday will be sufficient for tomorrow.” - William Pollard
What innovative changes will you make as you begin planning for next week? next month? next year?
#MEMSPAchat
A7:...so to answer your question..(sorry)...not always money, but looking at things differently...more eyes on something, examining it creates opportunities #MEMSPAchat
