#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Thank you for joining us tonight for #personalizedPD
Please welcome our guest moderator Gerry Marchand @gm8585

Welcome, #PersonalizedPD-ers!
Please share your location, role, and which Winter Olympic event best describes your favorite #PersonalizedPD experience and why?
Hello! I am Kenny Bosch, co-host and co-author of the #personalizedPD book. https://t.co/UKHXahPlrl
Thank you for joining us tonight.
Take a minute and invite some friends to join us.
Science teacher from IL. My Olympic PD would be Short Track Speed Skating because I want my PD fast and furious so that I can sort through it later.

A1: I would design #PersonalizedPD that was accessible on demand, based on feedback from students/colleagues, and attendees got $10,000 per session - $5K for personal use and $5K to be used in their classroom.
#PersonalizedPD A1: Unlimited wish lists for things and conferences! So many Ts would love to have more technology or specific trainings that we don't have the $ for.
A1: Oh wow. There are so many. I would love a more versatile space. I would love to go to a “big conference”. I’ve never even been to an EdCamp. I’d want to meet my personalizedpd fam. #PersonalizedPD
Bahahha! So that's how we are playing? Ok, so I would hire Harry Potter & Dumbledore to create a magical #PersonalizedPD where teachers could use divination to see the futures of their students & teach to them AND they still get 10k per session. ;) Probably equally as likely lol
A1 #personalizedPD I would allow every staff member paid time to collaborate w/geniuses in their area of need in their classrooms via virtual field trips so they could learn w/experts in the comfort of their own room & then give em time to play before reconvening for Q&A
Hi Becca. Glad you're here. Don't worry about being clever with every tweet. I was clever once back in 2001 and they let me stick around. #personalizedPD
A1: Real-time PD with individuals from multiple districts connecting on various topics in a wide range of formats. Virtually & face-to-face. #personalizedpdhttps://t.co/Ba4GCOmsuQ
A1 I would create a system where teachers are given time to find the passion for teaching again by loving into areas they are interested in and need assistance in equally. They would have time and unlimited support to learn how they learn best #personalizedpd
A1: Howdy from Barbara, school counselor in TX. With unlimited funds, I'd bring in @micheleborba to stoke our #SEL passion, to help us focus on elevating #empathy in our climate of caring, to put hearts first for students and staff! Then we'd circle up & connect. #personalizedpd
Q2: Please share something you failed at that you tried because of PD? Try to help others who have struggled at something where you have found success. #PersonalizedPD
A2: The first round of flipping my classroom (particularly the videos I made) was pretty awful. Glad those days are behind me, but I learned SO MUCH from them.
#PersonalizedPD

#PersonalizedPD A2: I remember learning about #googleclassroom and Ss having WAY too much fun commenting and beinge like a social media thing rather than learning...figured out settings quickly!

A: I think every teacher needs PD regarding how to teach your content from a literacy standpoint. How do students need to read your texts? How should they approach visual data? What kind of relationship should they have with technology, field specific or generic?
I tried pairing 70 participants off by matching affirmation cards earlier this month. Disaster. Next time I'll just let them pick their partner! #personalizedPD
a3 Temple Grandin is like Wonder Woman. Or the fairy Godmother of Autism. Let’s just call her a blessing. I was able to see her several years ago and WOW. #PersonalizedPD
A3: I'd compare Dave Burgess with the super hero @burgessdave A tall guy with a passion for (most of) his content, effective teaching & student learning. He morphs into a fast-talking missionary with hooks who saves education & the world w/ a magical book #personalizedPD#tlap
It's time for the #Lurker shout out!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
Lurk out! Don't get stuck behind your screen....we would love for you to dish out some knowledge. Join in, or not, it's cool.
A3: #Parenting expert @micheleborba is like Wonder Woman; her weapon is #empathy and she's not afraid to wield it. She travels the world to share her passion for stretching those #SEL skills first by nurturing glorious virtues like compassion & kindness. #PersonalizedPD

A3: My #PLN on @Twitter is my own personal #PersonalizedPD and how I learn most things! Is there a cool superhero crew that can be compared to them? All that I can think of is the Bionic 6...dating myself 😂
a4 #personalizedPD my students determine my need. Much like their IEP drives my instruction. With my new #ShiftThis shifts this year, we are on a roll! Having a lot of fun and parent feedback is positive.
A4: My most favoritest-est-est moment in education happened YESTERDAY when I brought 6 students to present at an #ICE18 workshop on Mastery-Based learning. They were dropping serious knowledge.
#PersonalizedPD
A4 I run Tech Cafe sessions in my classroom a few times each school year. The idea is that students look into new technology that interests them & make a fun project about anything. Like an #edcamp they can also lead a group on a topic if people sign up. #personalizedPD
What I lack in substance I make up for with the desire to empower others and integrate puns into everyday practice. So glad we're friends. #PersonalizedPD
Not kidding, my students were answering Qs from Ts in completely different subjects at COMPLETELY different grade levels. They could've been asked to come train teachers. It was MAGICAL!!!
#PersonalizedPD
A4 #PersonalizedPD We have S’s present at open house so they can be the experts & show P’s what they do & how they do it. They show off tech & their tech using skills while teaching parents how to log into PowerSchool and much much more!! Very empowering for all stakeholders!!
A5: I'm working hard right now on learning all I can about #PBL since many Ts are showing more interest in it @SanMarcosTigers and I want to be able to help. Such great experience for Ss! #personalizedPD
A5- Arts Integration! We are becoming an arts integration campus & it is pretty far out of my wheelhouse. I LOVE the learning environment that teaches content through an art form! #PersonalizedPD
My classes are #PBL and I think the key is to treat it like #personalizedPD Don't control the specific topics that Ss research and the tool(s) they use to show their learning.
Everyone will want to be here Tuesday March 6 for the #personalizedPD chat at 8pm as we announce our exciting #storiesinedu contest. A CONTEST! Lots of winners. Lots.

A5: Given me the choice, I'd choose to have more music and art PD to make my lessons more fun. Not only how to integrate but also some training in these area too because I feel I always want to be more capable in these area. #personalizedpd
A5: I'd like to learn some more about AR/VR. Tried awhile ago, but it just seemed too limited. Guessing it's advanced, but how is it useful/relevant for my students? #personalizedPD
A5 with tech changing so rapidly it’s always on my list to have more #PersonalizedPD to learn and play about tech tools but I also want/need more PD on SEL, restorative practices and trauma informed schools and teaching
That is a great point. Too often we are told that art/music is important but we are focused on literacy & math scores. Trying to find ways to incorporate art & music into our classes is important. Ts don't have to do it. Allow CHOICE for Ss to find ways to add it. #personalizedPD

Don’t forget to grab #GameOfStories at /tinyurl.com/ppdstories .
Casually leave one in the teacher’s lounge.
Introduce them to an instructional coach or admin.
Ask students which story THEY have experienced. #PersonalizedPD
Ss always have CHOICE in their projects. Studying the 1920's a student made a project on the music of the 20s. Another student focused on art of the time period & make her own recreations.
Also had a historic bobble head project where Ss could be creative w/art. #personalizedPD

Was watching a student practice for the ACT test and the tool said the proper form of the sentence was the one without the "!" Obviously, ACT does not follow my tweets! Not cool!
#personalizedPD
A6: the work I do related to data analysis and interpretation is probably the most #PersonalizedPD I do at this point as it is most often 1-to-1 or small group coaching sessions with individual classroom or team data. https://t.co/Ou7vkjVjLT
Sometimes I feel like a ping pong ball because I never know what teachers are going to want to explore...I love when I get to support Ts as they pursue their professional passions. #personalizedPD
That is a problem. Last year students recorded vids on not-that-old iPads but we couldn't get the vids off because they were just old enough. Not fun. We need uniform platforms & compatible upgrades. #personalizedPD
A7: Would love to say "Hey Google, I need my students to be able to __. Which tech tool best helps with that?" That would save some time! #PersonalizedPD
