Join in the #HISDAdminChat conversation each Sunday night at 6pm CST as we discuss the challenges we face and the successes we celebrate while learning and leading as an HISD Administrator.
Hello All! Eric Tingle, Regional Manager @teainfo! So glad to be joining tonight. At this time, I have multiple hip hop stations blaring from Pandora. I love music! #HISDAdminChat
Hi!!! I’m Maggy, AP @DoganElementary I’m so excited for the learning brought to us by @Leigha_Curry7 tonight! My song on repeat is an oldie but a goodie “ALL THE WAY UP!!!” #HISDAdminChat
Great question LC. Like rounds in fight, stopping for air is scheduled and there is not opt out. Finding time starts with putting it on your calendar and committing. #HISDAdminChat
A1: I have to find my quiet place. Sometimes that’s my car. Sometimes it’s my bathroom in my office. That gives me time to myself to just reflect. #HISDAdminChat
Happy Sunday! It’s Errica, AP at @MCWSTEM and the song I have on repeat right now is “A Great Work” by @BCourtneyWilson! Fuels my passion daily! #HISDAdminChat
A1. This was very hard for me my 1st 2 years of principalship. I learned that sharpening my saw was better for all. So, take breaks, sit in classrooms for non appraisal purposes, talk to students, etc. Its important! #HISDAdminChat
A1: I go walk and sit in one of my teachers classroom just to learn! It helps me to come back to reality and appreciate the work Inwas built to do! #HISDAdminChat
A1: That's an easy one. For the last few years 3rd grade has gone to recess at the end of the day. I "catch my breath" a few times a week by sitting out on the playground with them. One of my favorite things to do. :) #hisdadminchat
A1-Just like it states. We must pause and breathe in. At times, I’ll pause around the school to just notice the awesomeness or just to be thankful! #HISDAdminChat
Jaison here. I don't work on a campus but I try and support educators where I can. Bumping this song called Where There's Smoke by https://t.co/PG2Vn0Wp1E#HISDADMINCHAT
I began feeling guilty about scheduling “Reading” time and “Walk My Dog” on my schedule, however, it fits my personality type and helps me remember that white space is crucial to my overall well being! #HISDAdminChat

A1:Honestly, as a new administrator, I havent figured that part out yet. Music gives me brain breaks, but I have not established a routine yet. I would love suggestions. #HISDAdminChat
A1: There is a teacher on our campus who grounds me anytime we interact. Her positivity and good vibes refuels me every time. Thanks @MrsDuarteG!!! #HISDAdminChat
A1: I am learning to stop, breathe and pray in the precise moment when things get tough. Pausing to focus on the One who made gives me the strength to keep pressing on with boldness in the face of adversity. #HISDAdminChat
A1: ONE way I take a 30 sec break to focus on positive is to send shout outs on Twitter to teammates. Positive vibes will always kill energy vampires #HISDAdminChat
Sometimes I just enjoy taking moments to breathe and focus on that. It helps me be more aware of my body and how I'm feeling when I have a lot going on. #HISDADMINCHAT
A1: I loved to listen to students read during their independent reading time. That gave me a break and helped focus on what’s important. #HISDAdminChat
What are your big rocks? What will make the most impact for students? Block time out for your priorities and be an advocate for yourself and your time! #HISDAdminChat
A1:Honestly, as a new administrator, I havent figured that part out yet. Music gives me brain breaks, but I have not established a routine yet. I would love suggestions. #HISDAdminChat
A1: I’m not going to lie. I need to make it a point to get my oxygen break sometimes because I get caught up on all the stuff I’m trying to accomplish. And we DO need to stop and reflect! #HISDAdminChat
A2. Always keep an open door policy. Employees will soon learn that no matter the concern or celebration, you will be there. Always be approachable and there for them, despite the situation. #HISDAdminChat
A2: While it's never the same day twice, considering the 'what if's' through PLC and informal conversation can make the unexpected feel a bit more expected. #HISDAdminChat
A2: I definitely have specific skills that I focus on and emphasize so that people won't be overwhelmed with feedback. I'm big on scaffolding feedback. #hisdadminchat
A2 by confronting the challenges. Being there to guide the moves and try again. Just practice doesn’t make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect #HISDAdminChat
Keeping consistency on our core values: Educate, equip and empower ALL students EVERY DAY. No matter what changes or challenges come our way, we must keep our focus! #HISDAdminChat
A2: Teacher led PLCs are critical to the work we do at WES. Protecting that time and ensuring they are never cancelled or taken over by other house keeping items keeps us sharp! #hisdadminchat
A1: There is a teacher on our campus who grounds me anytime we interact. Her positivity and good vibes refuels me every time. Thanks @MrsDuarteG!!! #HISDAdminChat
A2) I think you keep the muscle memory for your staff by always remembering to model what you expect. See every kid, say hello with eye contact to every adult also, say thank you, and be in the moment. #EveryoneWatchesThePrincipal#HISDAdminChat
I believe muscle memory can be built among staff by staying true to the things that have been proven to work. Consistency and perseverance can push you through any tough time. Keeping the staff encouraged, consistent and focused will lead the way. #HISDAdminChat
A1: I am learning to stop, breathe and pray in the precise moment when things get tough. Pausing to focus on the One who made gives me the strength to keep pressing on with boldness in the face of adversity. #HISDAdminChat
A2: Teachers need constant reminders as well. We revisit our main campus initiatives weekly during PLC. Every PLC starts with a @TheLeaderinMe booster. #HISDAdminChat

A2: Muscle memory is built through repetition...Likewise in our line of work, it’s important to model, discuss, fine tune and repeat with “more weight” in order to master the concept and to be effective over and over again. #HISDAdminChat
A1 Modeling! Living the values one extols. Practice how you play. It won't happen over night and you might fall short, but grant yourself Grace and believe that tomorrow will be better than today. It is a process. #HISDAdminChat

Q3: You have to be in the work with them! Allow them to build and feed on each others successes and learn from each others failures. Promote team work over Individual successes. #HISDAdminChat
This is a difficult one for me because I’m competitive myself, but I must remember it’s not about one content vs another, we’re all here for the school as a whole.
#HISDAdminChat
A3 recognizing that everyone is great at something and that we all have areas of improvement. But mostly by keeping a focus on the what as a team we want to accomplish. We don’t need superstars, we need great team members #HISDAdminChat

A3. There's nothing wrong with a little friendly competition. Lol. Grade level or department data sharing is good. Some schools are divided into "houses" and each house gets points for particular things. People get competitive. I'm here for it! #HISDAdminChat
A3) Our conference room is like our gym and our workouts are our PLCs. We encourage a TEAM environment. Not TMT, money team, but TDT, dolphin team, lol #HISDAdminChat

Q3: 👀 for the positive in each team member! Once you identify it, name it. We are on this journey together. Every person on the bus plays a part in achieving our overall goal! #HISDAdminChat

A3: every competitive sport and game I've played has helped me form communities. We always help each other do better. Like watching @ealy_daeducator and @ErricaDH compete in math and ELAR. #HISDAdminChat

A3) Similar to swimmers and runners, there is plenty of room for both the individual and the team. It's not a zero sum game. Here's a blog I wrote on this very topic https://t.co/S00miUgkui (shameless plug) #HISDAdminChat

A1: I “enjoy the oxygen” by randomly dropping in classes to talk to students, reading my daily devotion or simply closing my eyes for a moment of reflection...#HISDAdminChat
A3: Several times a semester we get subs and have grade levels get together for half a day. They plan on how to tackle upcoming academic hurdles or other issues. The problem solving and creativity that's come out of these sessions is well worth the $ spent on subs. #hisdadminchat

And the funny thing @oJaison it wasn’t any contest, but at the end of day the reading and math scores were identical....called CONSISTENCY! #HISDAdminChat

A3: Celebrating and pairing up team mates to off-set areas of growth. Everyone brings an unique expertise to a team and that MUST be celebrated.
#HISDAdminChat
Where did the time go?! You all are truly #HISDsfinest! Tomorrow, stop, step back and take a breath. Remember your why! Thank you for allowing me to share this time with you. #HISDADMINCHAT#letlovelead
A3: Everyone's voice matters. You must foster a balanced culture of colaboration with healthy competition. Seek an understanding of what motivates the team and run with it, but most importantly be part of the team not just a referee. #HISDAdminChat

A3: Recognize everyone has something to bring to the table. Appreciate & celebrate all. Allow team members to operate in their strengths while working collaboratively to find solutions. This allows the ownership of the work be shared. Not “I” but “Us” #HISDAdminChat
A2: I think one way you build muscle among your staff is to consistently reflect on the high expectations that have been set for ALL within the school community; while focusing on all the positive accomplishments as leverage to move to the next step! #HISDAdminChat

This is what I’m talking about!
Don’t get discouraged by those that don’t show up. Keep the learning going regardless!
Thank you for this blog post @m_squaredBHS ! #HISDAdminChat you better read this one!
A3: Through shared decision making, being transparent in EVERYTHING we do....the school belongs to all of us and the actions of the adults has an impact on the success or failure of the kids....we have to work together to uplift and encourage each other...#HISDAdminChat
