Wow... Where is everyone tonight? #txed Tom Spall, 5th year Instructional Tech Specialist from THE @BrenhamISD in Brenham, TX. 11 years in education! Hey EVERYONE! I LOVED reading this amazing book from @ShakeUpLearning
A1: Meet students at their level whether it is their eye level or experience level for behavior or learning. Then find a way to helpthemreach for the next level. Let them know you will be there so they don't feel alone. #txed
I often think the word "process" is ignored. Process, I think, should be the goal in some situations instead of the product. Process is a journey that gives students the opportunity to reflect along the way #txed
A1 fear in PE manifests as "I can't do it" because they see me crank out the skill so easily. I constantly remind them of how I messed up 1,000 times before I got any good #txed
#TXed A1 - Many kids in my office would rather get in trouble than fail in front of friends. Have to reframe situation from what they don’t know to what they do know.
A1 A lot of modeling, talking, and listening go into overcoming fear. My students are explosive or in between. Getting to the root of their fears takes work and solid relationships. #txed
A1: Be willing to talk about your own failures...and how you overcame obstacles to fail forward...it makes it real and a safe place to TRY! #txedhttps://t.co/t2U5YvjTNr:
A1: Model Model Model and show them how to overcome any and all Fears. Most fears are caused by environment and/or misconceptions. Practice what you preach and let them know that we ALL make mistakes. F.A.I.L (First Attempt In Learning) #txed
Q2: Most problems have more than one path to reach a solution. How are you encouraging students to “think outside the box” to find these solutions? #TXed
Q2: Most problems have more than one path to reach a solution. How are you encouraging students to “think outside the box” to find these solutions? #TXed
A1- Most of our student have a fear of failing. We talk through their goals and which decisions lead to achieving their personal goals. We provide specific support resources to address their concerns. Mostly though, I listen and celebrate their attempts. #TXed
A2-Approach everything with a #growthmindset. Student can't get the solution encourage them to try again but take a different path #TXed#ShakeUpLearning
A2: Found this amazing video today on this topic! “Take chances and don’t be afraid to think outside the box!”Added bonus...Denzel! https://t.co/1qsAjo7U1f#TXED
#TXed A2 - I try to be concrete with the kids and ask them something simple like directions to local fast food place. They tell me then go over my route and it is always different. Point out that we both get to our location. Same is true with school.
sometimes the Ss think the problem is insurmountable or gigantic...this is when I bring out my phone and video what they are doing and show them...not as bad as what they think #txed
A2 Back to my science background, we talk about accidental discoveries like new medicines, new discoveries, trying things repeatedly to see if we get the same result. The design process is also amazing. #txed
Q2: Most problems have more than one path to reach a solution. How are you encouraging students to “think outside the box” to find these solutions? #TXed
Q1: I think letting students know it’s okay to feel unsure or afraid of something, but giving them courage to do it anyway and letting them know it’s okay to fail, and you’ll be with them the whole time. #txed#neisdpln
A2- I try to provide them a challenging scenario in a area that they excel and ask them brainstorm solutions. Usually it is sports, favorite subject, or social. It gets them thinking and talking about them being able to problem solve. #TXed
#TXed A3 - Change the question. Ask them to explain and elaborate. Have to ask question as if Google is around. I sometimes give the answer and then ask kids to tell me why?
A2:Having more than one path to reach a solution is important to share with students. I like to have them jot their thought down first then discuss. We also use signs to show our thinking. They like when others agree with them but even more so when their thought is unique. #TXed
A3: and "I don't know" isn't an allowable statement unless it's followed by because
IDK because I was in the bathroom, wasn't there, etc.
You know something, and I can't wait to learn from you.
#txed
A4 allowing Ss to explore their fitness/sport/game passions for about half the class by allowing choice in station work following completion of a skill tied to my specific standards #txed
A4 Stepping into any classroom shows there’s a need for differentiation and not one size fits all. Project based learning, stem, levels of understanding all vary based on our students. #txed
A4: getting to know the individual learner and their struggles to understand how to help them. Building relationships with each student will all you to avoid the "one-size-fits- all " #TxEd
A4: Choice! Makerspace and Enrichment “Exploratory” classes that rotate every nine weeks-mid day three days per week...robotics, cooking, coding, yoga, crafting, random acts of kindness, aerospace, 21st century fishing, etc. #txed
Q4: We will be doing more differentiated professional development this year based on individual needs and interest versus the one size fits all PD. #txed
A1: I promote the other "F Word" (F.A.I.L.) or First Attempt In Learning. Math is about making mistakes and figuring out how to overcome them. I show them that a mistake is not the end, it's the beginning.
#ShakeUpLearning#TXed
A3: Asking questions that can change based on students perspectives or the schemes they bring in with them - each child has different experiences. Letting students debate their answers and justify their thinking with each other after asking higher order thinking Q’s. #txed
A5: As a school, we have to mold into a family that works together with the same common goal. That doesn't mean every teacher has to use the same methods, but that every staff member understands the mission of the school #TXed
A5-Looking at how we look at RtI. Instead of just focusing on struggling students, we need to focus on all and see how we can grow each individual student. #TXed
To differentiate for students, the focus of our weekly planning times will be used to look at meeting kids needs in small groups, not focusing the entire time on the whole group lesson. That should be minimal. #txed
#TXed A4 - Read this today. “3-5 years from now, my students will still know ______. Or they still are able to do ______. Or they still find value in ________.” As educators we always have to be growing. Kids will learn as we grow, You stop, they stop.
A5 I honestly can’t own a one size fits all model in special Ed. Not only does it go against my mindset, it’s not feasible for the success of my students. #txed
All students have needs that should be met in the classroom. I love that you are willing to look at EACH student and not just the lowest quartile! #txed
A2: I ask open-ended questions. I ask about their process, and hear them out. This shows them that there is more than one way to solve a math problem.
#TXed
Good goal! I sometimes (maybe lot of time) feel worksheets are used because there is too much time devoted to things in school. we feel we need to fill every minute of the day #txed
Q5: We are moving away from the one size fits all approach by changing the focus of our weekly planning times to looking at meeting kids needs in small groups and stations, not focusing the entire time on the whole group lesson. That should be minimal. #txed
A4: I have conversations with my Ss. I listen to them. I follow the pacing of my curriculum, but I don't worry if I'm doing the exact same activity as another teacher, or even as another period. I make educated decisions based on academic needs.
#TXed
A6: We can't through out the curriculum, but we can let the legislatures hear our voice on the pacing. We need to build relationships with our students, and personalize the learning for them; not just in grade school, but higher education as well. #TXed
A6: Let's focus on building relationships to help promote change outside of our classrooms. Students need to feel loved and know they are cared for in order to demonstrate that love/kindness to other people. Students need us to model for them how to create change. #txed
#TXed A6 - I have moved outside my walls and started my own podcast; “5-minutes with the Counselor.” Published 13 episodes and people are listening, So much fun to have an audience. Need to work on that idea with student and teachers.
A6-Overall our main goal as educators should be to help our students see that they have a purpose in this world. Show that their positive attitude, maintaining a #growthmindset, and knowing their is more than one way to solve a problem....well they can be the change #TXed
A6 Encourage Ss to work together to solve real world problems in their own communities. Partner with local businesses and organizations to meet the needs of others. #txed

Q6: Offer our staff CHOICE in how they get their PD! Our district is hosting some summer “PD in PJ’s”....great choice for teachers on vacation and wanna continue learning from the couch! #personalizedPD#TXed
Excluded recapture. The district's spending patterns are still high and growing fast. Expenditures growing 2.5 times student enrollment. Again, who is looking out for the taxpayer? #PropertyTaxReform2019#txlege#txed
