The first Twitter edchat in the Philippines, helping teachers grow their PLN, use tech in the classroom and promoting a culture of teachers helping teachers.
Good evening, #edchatPH! I'm Jerald, a teacher and instructional technologist for our district here in Texas. I am honored to moderate today's chat. Thank you, @ginoloko for giving me this opportunity.
Hello everyone! I’m Alfonso from Pasig City, I won’t be staying too long. My favorite fast food place: McDonald’s, nothing better than ending a day with fries and a burger #edchatph
We have 3 very interesting questions today. I will post the first one in a minute. Kindly format your answer to Q1 with A1: (answer) followed by #edchatPH. Thank you.
A1: Recently my school got goosle chromes for all students from grade 2 to grade 5. All students rea required to complete at least 4 projects during the school year integration technology. This force most teacher to be more creative! #edchatPH
A1 I don’t want to gloat, but can I say I’m the one actively promoting the use of edtech tools? I recommend apps and also do informal trainings for teachers. #edchatph
A1 digital tools are best used to tell their story. Students need to be able to share what they have learn. A responsible makers shares what they learn with others #edchatPH
A1 I encourage teachers to use apps that aren’t paid and those that have simple interfaces. I recommend apps that promote student engagement, apps that allow student voices to be heard and listened to #edchatph
A1 there has to be a balance between the use of physical and digital tools. A students needs to understand how to use physical tools to prototype creations before digital creations #edchatPH
A1 by providing 1:1 devices, offering training and support via many methods, working on writing activities directly into lessons plans, co-teaching, lots of encouragement and dreaming #edchatPH
A1 I use apps to get my students to tell their story. Come PTC time, even if the teacher is suppose to be sharing and talking, I let my students’ work do the talking for me. Teachers have enough air time. It’s time for the students to take ownership of their learning #edchatph
A1 too many are pushing that digital is the end all be all but students need to understand the basic properties of the materials that they using to create #edchatPH
A1 My school is open to progressive approaches and digital tools are welcome provided all Ts and Ss are ready to use them. We are integrating tech this coming year. #edchatPH
A1 too many are pushing that digital is the end all be all but students need to understand the basic properties of the materials that they using to create #edchatPH
A1: We have been exploring the merits of integrating maker education, including CS and physical computing. I believe that digital tools, by themselves, are incomplete without the proper post-activity debrief. #edchatPH
It isn’t even tech with a purpose. It is about understanding the components you are constructing. For example, knowing how to add tolerances for a design based on the characteristics of the materials. #edchatPH
Precisely. Constructing and deconstructing needed. Tech doesn't mean wired. There are many other ways to improve learning. It starts with a healthy collab and curiosity. #edchatPH

A2: Robotics, makerspace and CS are very relevant and engaging to our students. These give them the opportunity to explore, fail fast and create while learning engineering and maker skills. #edchatPH
One of the advantages is that you develop critical thinkers, engineers, problem solvers! This definitely helps students to develop their resilience and teamwork skills. #edchatPH
A2 first it isn’t training. It is about giving students the freedom to explore. Allowing students to select the right tool for the task. Giving students the power to share knowledge with the maker community #edchatPH
A1 by providing 1:1 devices, offering training and support via many methods, working on writing activities directly into lessons plans, co-teaching, lots of encouragement and dreaming #edchatPH
A2 Robotics, CS and MS provide students opportunities to experience failure and success, whatever they encounter it develops grit to pursue what they have started without putting them in a box #edchatPH
I love it! We live in a world of ultrastructured educational systems. Giving the students the opportunity to explore and create openly is vital to their survival in 21st-century workforce. #edchatPH
A2 it is transferring the decisions that a teacher would make on what to do on deciding what tools to use to students. Allowing students to own their learning and drive the direction. #edchatPH
It's just the start but as we continue to create student centered learning experiences we create more and more opportunities to let tech make sense to accomplish the goals for learning. #edchatPH
A2 the big advantage is centered around the collaborative problem solving involved. It also brings core subj content to life. Ss are able to explore real world concepts and problems. Being problem solvers is a vital skill for future #edchatPH
A2) When I see kids exploring, creating, problem solving while working as part of a team I see so many relevant skills that will help them succeed in their future jobs or business. #edchatPH
I wish my school had this. I think we could make wonderful things with that type of programs. Students are trained to have one hour of code during the school year. I think this is too little. However, It's been enough to spark their curiosity! #edchatPH
A4 not as much as it should. Allow coding / robotics to be an options. One of the tools in their box to pick from. Don’t force students into coding. Allow them to be better problem solvers #edchatPH

A3 we have it on various levels. It is certainly having an impact at the lower levels it's in use. It will only get better as we grow the program to lower levels. With people like @KellyShutt1 leading us the sky is the limit. #sulsprisd#edchatPH
My process is to start with stations with short timeframes or challenges. Goals of building the culture of 4C’s. Then moving toward pulling curriculum outcome with projects and more authentic longer term projects #edchatPH
A3: We do have a strong robotics program and a budding CS program, but the courses are electives. We also have after-school clubs for making and robotics. This goes in line with the idea of choice = engagement. #edchatPH
A3 the goal for most coding programs is to introduce them tonwhat coding is. Not to say this is your future job. 50% of students will like coding and the others won’t. Allow them to be better problem solvers. #edchatPH
A3 We don't have it in place yet but we are exploring it. A culture of innovation happens when there is openness to change and a desire to make the world a better place. #edchatPH
A3 we have a robotics program and is starting to introduce in the classroom gr 3 up levels have once a week robotics class and we have elite teams #edchatPH
Thanks, @JeraldJolito for moderating the chat. We appreciate your participation as well. Our country is yet to innovate on a grand scale. We need all the insights and help we can get. #edchatPH
