Monthly Twitter chats on topics of interest to educators who want to share ideas, build their professional learning networks, connect and converse about tech in NYC Schools.
Happy February everyone! We made it through a really long January. Welcome to our #awardwinning#NYCSchoolsTechChat. How about checking in and telling us where you're joining us from?
A1 I honestly don’t usually address vday, except in conversations about how I want my kids to stay kids and not have too grown up relationships #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A1: Probably none as the closest I’ve ever gotten to a Valentine’s tech lesson is using Shakespeare’s sonnets app with HS students. I’ve never been big on holiday themes & especially V-Day, but that’s just me. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A1: I'm not in the classroom, but I pray to science #teachers use this month to thoughtfully weave #blackhistorymonth over Valentines Day into their respective practices. Given the polarized state of nation, I hope educators choose to engage in real talk #NYCSchoolsTechChat

Q2 Learning is at the top of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. How are you ensuring your students feel a sense of love and belonging in your classroom? #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A2: it’s all about relationships! Checking in with students, following up when they’re absent, having conversations before/after school, knowing their interests #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A1: I know teachers have used some tech programs like Canva and @piktochart for students to make Valentines Day messages for their parents. Sweet! #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A2: I’ve always worked to make sure my students feel safe and well fed-sometimes I’ve had (healthy) snacks and an extra coat and sometimes it’s making sure class is a safe space to open up and that you’re listening (in whatever way they communicate) #NYCSchoolsTechChat
It’s all about making kids and their families feel they are important from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave. Also, using apps like @RemindHQ for communication #NYCSchoolsTechChat
I bumped into my students tonight at dinner. Went to their table to say hi! It made their faces light up as well as their parents. NO Assessment can do this.. Sometimes it isn't about data #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Q2 Learning is at the top of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. How are you ensuring your students feel a sense of love and belonging in your classroom? #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A2: One potential way to ensure a sense of belonging is felt is by constantly reevaluating your pedagogy. Do you always feel the need to be front + center? Are you comfortable giving up control? How often do you harp on what's right vs. what's meaningful? #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Q2. Relationships. Relationships. Relationships. If they know you care about them as humans and learners, it's amazing what they will feel is possible! Maslow before Blooms. Once that happens the Learning magic happens! #NYCSchoolsTechChat
That is what teaching is really about, building character and self awareness. Giving students the tools they need to be successful no matter what the data says. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
I love when I see students ‘in the world’ because they sometimes freak out as though I can’t exist outside school-once a non-verbal student saw me on a bus with his grandma(didn’t know her)-I had to explain to her that it was okay & why he was excited #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A3: I’ve always loved the big school events like Thanksgiving with families and programs requiring (though it shouldn’t be necessary) teachers to recognize students for positive moments in class and the hall #NYCSchoolsTechChat
We did a #positivelykind student led Twitter chat. We also give out Random Acts of Kindness awards, You're On a Roll recognitions, Student of the Month, etc #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Q3: A student does not have to be in your classroom in order to say hello and greet them respectfully. Know that all students that enter the building are your students and should be treated with love, care and respect. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4: I’ve used @Flipgrid with students for encouragement where they recorded positive messages and replies just to inspire each other #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Amen to that! When you invest in them, they will invest in you and the class. Period. Be the teacher you needed in school or that you would want your biological children to have. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4 remember having a Student of the Week and everyone would write them a letter? digitize that with @flipgrid and have a moderated topic with each student introducing themselves and folks add comments throughout the year. Personal cheer bucket. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
One was flabbergasted that I was at Staples-I said “What are you talking about, this is a teacher store. Why are you here?” Another one had a grandmother that lived in my old apartment, so I would see him on his best behavior most weekends #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Students need to feel included in the process. Their ideas need to be heard. We started a Junior SPOC squad for Tech we also have an 8th grade community and have just started a student team for each grade. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4: A lot of ppl here will give good answers to this. I'd argue tech is probably causing some students to feel more isolated. I'd love to visit 1:1 schools that have incorporated ways of building better interpersonal relationships via in-person interactions. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4: In #CastleberryISD we often have students collaborate with other grade levels on digital forums such as blogs. This makes Ss feel loved because they receive support and encouragement from adults and peers that aren’t their teacher or grade level. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
It's only blocked on the guest wifi for us. We decided if we were going to teach kids how to act appropriately online, we needed to be able to use it. Do you allow someone to get a driver's license never having gotten into a car? #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4. Our pupils forget most of what we teach them. They will however remember us their teachers forever.Lets be good and kind to them.A kind word can last forever.#nycschoolstechchat
A4 remember having a Student of the Week and everyone would write them a letter? digitize that with @flipgrid and have a moderated topic with each student introducing themselves and folks add comments throughout the year. Personal cheer bucket. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4: A great way to use tech to help students feel love and belonging is to set up an online community where they can connect and converse. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A5-Teachers are asked to post a @Skedula blurb every month. So parents get an update from every subject teacher every month. #NYCSchoolsTechChat@ioeducation
We did a @Flipgrid project with all four buildings. They recorded and told their story about their favorite part of being a Spartan so we could show that to new students to get them better acquainted with our district. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A5: Setting up social media like Facebook pages, Insta, Twitter, to give families a window into the classroom is a great way to help them feel they belong. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A5: Family engagement are always a struggle in #District75 - Apart from the big events (Turkey Day, etc) I’ve have parent trainings where I teach them to use tech with their kids-how to use their phones, email, social media, etc. It’s always very popular #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Q5 we have quite a bit of parent involvement in various capacities. For example. My robotics team students’parents travel with us to competitions and help raise funds. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A Q4 Technology gives teachers the ability to create a sense of belonging and community. Through @GoogleForEdu Ss share, collaborate and build on their learning! It is huge!! The premise is that we are a "school community" That is how IS24 moves forward! #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Each teacher just talks about what they're doing in their classroom, and what they will focus on that month. Just a little "head's up" for parents to ask their children about. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
In reply to
@StephaniePlachy, @Skedula, @ioeducation
I say hi to everyone student in the hallway whether I know them or not. Often when I have them later in high school, they say "oh! You're the weird lady that's been saying hi to me for 3 years!". I'll take it! #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A2. Reinforce one mic when students share their responses or their work. Encourage respect and have meetings during lunch with food to talk about progress on behavior and work. They need someone to listen to them once in a while #NYCSchoolsTechChat

Social media is absolutely a way to make families feel included in the process. They have a snapshot of what their children are participating in during the school day! A picture tells a thousand words!! #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A5: Setting up social media like Facebook pages, Insta, Twitter, to give families a window into the classroom is a great way to help them feel they belong. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4. Sometimes, I have the kids take a pic of their work, upload it into padlet, then go over it and discuss whole class what they did right, kids like that and feel their work appreciated and valued ##NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4: Yes! A kind word or experience. I still remember my fourth grade teacher took a student a week to her pool club. So memorable. We felt loved. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Today we created a collaborative google doc with learning kids wanted to share - all were able to edit and add in real time and it was amazingness!! #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Parent engagement is a struggle in D75. This year, I have found success by doing lunch were we have pizza and do activities. This month we are doing a toothbrushing book, practicing toothbrushing and everyone is going home with materials. We promote it daily #NYCSchoolsTechChat
