The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) is starting a new #prinleaderchat every Sunday at 9:00 pm EST. We will be starting this Sunday October 2. Our schedule is listed on this google spreadsheet https://goo.gl/SI9LVo.
Hi everyone, Bill Ziegler from Pennsylvania - Principal of Pottsgrove High School - Fishing and going to baseball games is my favorite spring activity #PrinLeaderChat
For me, the goal is not “innovative leadership” ... but awesome leadership. And I think a relentless pursuit of awesomeness, will eventually yield some “innovative” results.
#PrinLeaderChat
Recently spoke w/ someone working at well-known prin prep/PD org that produces "innovative" ldrs. They have come to realize that there is no continuity in ldrship if every prin tries to be completely innovative. #PrinLeaderChat
A1: Innovation does not necessarily rest on the leader. It should be the goal of the leader to create an organizational culture based on trust... where teachers are free to fail. This is when innovation can thrive. #PrinLeaderChat
Good evening everyone. My name is Debra Theesfield. I am an assistant principal in Odessa, Texas. I like to load up the travel trailer & go camping/ fishing in the spring! #PrinLeaderChat
A1: Many converstive-minded folk equate being innovative with being radical and add a negative connotation to it... but the more I think about it, maybe we need to be “radical leaders”as future-ready is our goal for students. #PrinLeaderChat
A1: I think people equate innovation with one more thing--to learn, to do, to deal with--I think innovation is creative, thoughtful, reflective, and constantly changing. #PrinLeaderChat
That’s very true! I do something I think is very innovative, only to find everyone else has been doing it for years!!! “Innovative is in the experience of the innovator”! #PrinLeaderChat
A2 A myth of innovative leadership is that you have to take high risks. Leaders should be thoughtful, reflective, and focused on the strategic goals of the school. Trust the process! #PrinLeaderChat
A1: one of the myths in innovative leadership I see is that innovation is a myth in itself👎If all we see are constraints the work can be mythical indeed. Having a "want to" and looking for small ways to get started today...nothing really mythical about it👍 #prinleaderchat
For me, being a principal is about building relationships with teachers and students, cultivating collaboration, and bringing positive energy. Being passionate about all three is what allows for the potential of awesomeness. #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Maybe it’s that innovative leaders always have the answers to all problems. Innovative leaders know how to mobilize the talents of the people they serve to solve problems. #PrinLeaderChat
A2. That one person must come up with the idea or plan. Collaborative leadership works best. Delegating Leadership responsibilities will grow your team and school. #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Viewing Innovative leadership as a noun rather than a verb. Innovative leadership is not the kind of leadership you adopt until the next one comes along, it is the way in which you lead, inspire, and adapt. #prinleaderchat
A1: one of the myths in innovative leadership I see is that innovation is a myth in itself👎If all we see are constraints the work can be mythical indeed. Having a "want to" and looking for small ways to get started today...nothing really mythical about it👍 #prinleaderchat
A2: I think too often people believe that innovation has to be big and scary. Innovation is about evolving--it is changing and growing as we learn and grow with it. Innovation is a vision that takes place one step at a time. #PrinLeaderChat
Big myth - the “innovation” must come from the leader. As leaders, our role is most often to create the environment where innovation can take place. #PrinLeaderChat
It can be a mistake to focus on our “innovative leadership.” The goal is to provide whatever leadership is needed for teachers and students to thrive. “Leadership” is never the goal... student success is. #PrinLeaderChat
A3. Innovative School Leadership is all about…. putting people over everything else. Find ways to make it work so people feel supported (kids and adults) & happy. This may mean breaking some 'rules'. I call that being innovative. Sometimes policy gets in the way #PrinLeaderChat
I agree 100%. When we focus on being innovative we falter in focusing on learning - Chase Learning, not innovation - innovation will come #PrinLeaderChat
A3 - Innovative School Leadership is all about...
...empowering your people to be even more awesome tomorrow. Change can be simple and local to be powerful and profound.
#PrinLeaderChat
#PrinLeaderChat A3 being reflective and creating an atmosphere of discourse and cooperation. Innovation requires solid trusting relationships with constituents.
A3 Innovative leadership is all about the process. Create a school culture that allows for Ss and Ts to take a risk, reflect, and repeat. #PrinLeaderChat
A3: At it's base it is about being a great leader and developing the leadership of your faculty and staff regardless of their title. Innovations that fit the needs and resolve the problems will be nurtured in that culture. #PrinLeaderChat
A3: Innovative school leadership is about a relentless pursuit of creating the optimal conditions for teachers and students to excel. It’s about doing whatever it takes to remove the barriers for the teachers and students in your school. #PrinLeaderChat
A3: Innovative school leadership is all about “relentless restlessness” as @gcouros calls it. It’s a mindset that says we are not there yet. Keep moving forward, keeping growing, keep connecting, keep caring, & keep LEARNING! #PrinLeaderChat
A3: Building relationships, having a vision, meeting the needs of our students, collaborating to be the best for our students, taking risks, celebrating successes & failures, & trying again--never being satisfied with the way things are...#PrinLeaderChat

#PrinLeaderChat
#PrinLeaderChat A3: I think innovative leadership has a great deal to do with culture and environment. Create a culture where teachers feel safe taking risks and environment that they trust you and will come w you on a new journey.
A4 One hundred percent of the activities in next year's School Improvement Plan are the results of teacher innovation at our 2nd #FedEx Day. Now THAT's teacher voice!!
#PrinLeaderChat
#PrinLeaderChat Q4: We hosted Lunch with Leaders. We reached out to staff and our community and booked top leaders to come and eat lunch with groups of kids and talk to them. It was a hit.
Innovative school leadership is all about trust. If you’re staff is trying new things and bringing forward new ideas, your leadership is positive and supportive. #PrinLeaderChat
A4: We asked all our students to write down the name of a teacher they trusted. We took the students who wrote “nobody” worked with teachers to try and ensure they didn’t fall through the cracks. #PrinLeaderChat
A4. I cooked dinner two times for my entire staff. A BBQ and a spaghetti feast. It's all about service (and serving food). I also gave them all mittens. #PrinLeaderChat
A4: We’ve visited innovators and industries of the future to see what we can learn and how it could help our students - Inventionland, Google Pittsburgh, CMU, Penn State Materials Science lab & formed partnerships to keep the ideas flowing in both directions #prinleaderchat
A4: Created an after school credit recovery program modeled after our summer school pacing guides that meets 2 days a week for a semester. Allows kids to recover credits during the year and get back on track towards graduation. #PrinLeaderChat
A4: We completely revamped our school culture. Realized that a culture that makes teachers and appreciation of them a school priority is then replicated in the classroom. #prinleaderchat
#PrinLeaderChat Q4: Create a Admin/student cabinet...much like a central office cabinet that you invite in to brainstorm, help make decision, problem solve and discuss .
A3 Innovative leadership is all about listening to others’ ideas, encouraging people (faculty, students, parents) to think outside the box, and supporting one another in that scary place - outside the box. #PrinLeaderChat
A4: We have expanded our #Makerspace and offerings in our Learning Center...We added a STEM class...Tried a #CCMSChat on Twitter for a PD book club...And hopefully, we all came to school every day doing what is best for our students! #PrinLeaderChat
A4: Expanded search for global innovations in ED and publicly share out with educators who then pick what might work best for their school. #PrinLeaderChat
Thanks everyone for a Powerful Night on #PrinLeaderChat to learn how to Shatter the Innovative Leadership Myths - We are taking off next week for Mother’s Day
A4: We’ve visited innovative programs in other schools to see how they’re structured and the takeaways for our school and our students. Logging miles, asking questions, solving problems, wearing out the drawing board. #prinleaderchat
We did the same thing. I asked 'Do you feel that there is at least one ADULT at school that you feel safe to go to when you need someone?'. Three choice. Yes, No, I feel I don't need anyone. Really good info to have. #PrinLeaderChat
Anthony, they are part of our Family and CommunityEngagement (FACE) team. Our Viking Dads are taking on projects to improve our school & incorporate school colors/mascot into our school. #PrinLeaderChat
I love this idea, one of our goals is for every kid to have an adult they know cares for them in the school and that they can go to if they need to talk #PrinLeaderChat
A4 In an effort to increase student voice & choice, I encouraged students to partner w/ a teacher to form clubs. Students formed an anime club, a gamers club, and even a poster club (they make posters for school events when we need them). #PrinLeaderChat
Thanks everyone for a Powerful Night on #PrinLeaderChat to learn how to Shatter the Innovative Leadership Myths - We are taking off next week for Mother’s Day
A4 We implemented two Kinesthetic Classrooms thanks to our PQ Foundation, NC Community Foundation, and the Northern Albemarle Community Foundation! #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Myth is that innovation is in the city, Silicon Valley, or faraway lands. Truth: there are innovative things taking place right in your backyard that you just aren’t aware of. Get out, connect, find them! #prinleaderchat
Thanks @DeniseMurai ! It started with the idea from the 2015 Family Engagement conference (and from colleagues in Boone Co KY). PLUS, innovative Dads!!! #prinleaderchat
We do the same and encourage teachers to form clubs based on their interest. We have a cooking club, archery club, and a science fair club among others. #Prinleaderchat
I LOVE this post from @SaneeBell! If you don't read one other blog about leadership the rest of this year, read this one to remind you about why you lead! This one is awesome! I feel refocused and ready for another week! @DrBillZiegler#JoyfulLeaders#PrinLeaderChat#LeadLAP
