Welcome to tonght's #edchatie discussion. As usual, before we begin, please introduce yourself and remember to add the hashtag #edchatie into all tweets for the next hour of the discussion
  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 3:31 PM EST
#edchatie John in Charlottesville, working in a school district that implements UDL
  • fboss Feb 5 @ 3:36 PM EST
Can you start us off with a good definition of #UDL (Universal Design for Learning) ahead of tonight's hour long #edchatie discussion?
    In reply to @johnmayo
  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 3:36 PM EST
    #edchatie Yes I can Fred.

  • riomhaireschool Feb 5 @ 3:36 PM EST
Primary SET, Mayo. Could we get a deeper definition of UDL and perhaps an example from primary, secondary and third level so that we can get out heads around the concept? #edchatie
  • fboss Feb 5 @ 3:37 PM EST
Fred Boss, 2nd level Art Teacher, currently with @NCCAie #edchatie
  • fboss Feb 5 @ 3:38 PM EST
@johnmayo #edchatie (typically, I forgot to add in the hashtag)

  • fboss Feb 5 @ 3:38 PM EST
This would be a great start to tonight's #edchatie

Primary SET, Mayo. Could we get a deeper definition of UDL and perhaps an example from primary, secondary and third level so that we can get out heads around the concept? #edchatie
  • FoleyKev Feb 5 @ 3:39 PM EST
Kevin here a Teaching Principal using digital technology to implement the curriculum.I also have Irelands first and only Primary School STEAM Room #edchatie
  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 3:39 PM EST
#edchatie UDL defined by the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design based in Ballsbridge define it as https://t.co/v9ijNkp0i6
  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 3:40 PM EST
#edchatie Our definition in #ACPS is We will offer alternative representations of information, multiple tools, and a variety of instructional strategies to provide access for all learners to acquire lifelong learning competencies.
  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 3:41 PM EST
#edchatie I should have tweeted this earlier https://t.co/jOGdYJ4Tae
  • FoleyKev Feb 5 @ 3:41 PM EST
UDL must include technology, code ,robotics and AI #edchatie
  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 3:42 PM EST
#edchatie basically UDL when designed in education process allows for multiple ways for achieving success
  • fboss Feb 5 @ 3:44 PM EST
I like when they say "It is an orientation to any design process that starts with considering the needs of the user." This is a good approach to differentiation in learning #edchatie
    In reply to @johnmayo
  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 3:44 PM EST
#edchatie UDL forms part of a larger structure in Albemarle where we have 7 Pathways to guide what we do https://t.co/JfSjy6FVdR
  • gravesle Feb 5 @ 3:45 PM EST
#edchatie Leigh from Michigan (I work with higher ed & teacher educators) - we embed UDL into a larger "Learning Design Strategy" https://t.co/vVayxZJaEt
  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 3:45 PM EST
#edchatie one of the problems with differentiation with teachers is that they feel need to do multiple activities where a UDL informed activity will have built in from the beginning
  • fboss Feb 5 @ 3:46 PM EST
Welcome to tonight's #edchatie discussion on "Should we be incorporating Universal Design for Learning in student teaching/CPD education?" Great to chat with you again online @gravesle

  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 3:47 PM EST
#edchatie I doubt UDL is on the radar on the teaching training colleges or PDST.
  • fboss Feb 5 @ 3:47 PM EST
That's what I meant - it's a bit like the approach used in Design Thinking -> https://t.co/yIksJC1GS3 It starts with the learner #edchatie
    In reply to @johnmayo
  • LiamDGuilfoyle Feb 5 @ 3:47 PM EST
Liam; background in Post-Primary Science, PhD candidate in Teacher Ed - I'm curious about UDL but not hugely opinionated on the subject. Tonight might help form my opinions! #edchatie
  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 3:49 PM EST
#edchatie Design Thinking is spot on Fred. In my opinion, UDL will change the way I would design a scheme of work (if I ever have to do one again)

#edchatie @LiamDGuilfoyle I can do a bit of a link dump if you wish
  • LiamDGuilfoyle Feb 5 @ 3:50 PM EST
Do! I watched the video you posted. I have definitely come across the concept before, or similar concepts. But happy to consume more to get a better picture! Thanks. #edchatie

#edchatie most of the links form part of the online UDL course we host for teachers in Albemarle. I can't share everything as some of the resources are on our Google domain and need a k12albemarle email to access
  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 3:54 PM EST
#edchatie The Irish Centre for Excellence in Universal Design would be a good place for an Irish teacher to start although theri focus is more in physical design than pedagogical https://t.co/3zXjG45tjM
  • JP4DT Feb 5 @ 3:55 PM EST
The benefit of incorporating findings from learning sciences in teacher education is clear #edchatie
  • fboss Feb 5 @ 3:55 PM EST
I saw that - very interesting for me as an art teacher though ;-) #edchatie

#edchatie Margaret SEN teacher.UDL is about removing barriers to learning. In the past curricula & teaching designed to reach ‘the middle’ then retrofitted (differentiated)to include those either side.A UDL curriculum or lesson is designed with all in mind https://t.co/7jwLEJ0aKc
  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 3:56 PM EST
#edchatie I might have shared this already- I have mixed up my tabs of links https://t.co/tXjnxlHCNH

    In reply to @johnmayo, @JCforTeachers
  • LiamDGuilfoyle Feb 5 @ 3:58 PM EST
Would it be fair to say that there isn't anything 'new' in UDL, per se, in terms of what 'good practice' should look like, but that UDL has collated/systematised what we know about good practice into something coherent and that has explicit values? #edchatie

Good short course on @ICEPEurope on UDL. Can’t go wrong with @KatieNovakUDL books for more info. Good teachers who integrate edtech already practice UDL - the theory just affirms good practice and serves as an affirming reminder to continue
  • fboss Feb 5 @ 4:03 PM EST

My lens for UDL in Ireland has been the CEAD website and what they share there. I am not aware that they have or employees of have a twitter handle #edchatie

Do we have any Irish examples of lessons for Primary, Post Primary and Third Level that have begun with #udlead #edchatie

I think those of us talking about UDL assume an awareness that’s not there. Perhaps we need to be explicit when a resource, activity etc is underpinned by UDL so that others can see its full potential #edchatie

#edchatie Some UDL adherents don't like this cartoon but it gives a good example https://t.co/3lQULD5JDG
  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 4:14 PM EST
#edchatie UDL is not a SEN issue it has more scope than that
  • fboss Feb 5 @ 4:14 PM EST

If learning outcomes are designed with UDL in mind, if we as teachers interpret them and collaboratively design learning experiences to enable all students to progress, if we can capture evidence of that learning to complete the circle, then we may have some great examples, if...

Is it not partly on the Tools being used to aid the implementation of the 7 principles? Make it harder to do it differently? #edchatie
    In reply to @fboss
  • j_loughlin Feb 5 @ 4:25 PM EST
I must admit I've never heard of UDL before! From the little I've read here it sounds like 'learning styles' packaged up with a different name! Oh BTW, John here, teacher in Galway #edchatie
    In reply to @fboss
  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 4:26 PM EST
#edchatie I had hoped to go into some detail on the tools that we use in Albemarle
  • johnmayo Feb 5 @ 4:26 PM EST
#edchatie it is not learning styles but designing for the ability of all users

My PME thesis last year examined the construct of UDL when considering the needs of children with ASD in a classroom. As an NQT, what I learned has been invaluable to my planing. UDL enables us to consider barriers and create an inclusive learning environment for all #edchatie
