Hi all, Laura Hilger, Senior Coach for , Anchorge
-
A1 Nathan Juneau School District K/1
-
Hi I'm Sue, new 3rd Grade teacher at the Ft Yukon School.
-
You're our first (that I remember, but I missed last week) ANC participant! Welcome
-
-
Hello ! Damon Hargraves here in Kodiak.
-
-
-
If you're on Participate Learning, the hash tag will automatically add to your comments.
-
Sue, how'd you learn about ?
-
-
-
-
-
A2: Fun and safe. How I will create it is always a work in progress. Validation and creativity are two ways.
-
-
A2: (cont) Validation of students and creativity in designing lessons, continuing to refine my practice.
-
A2: I use the students/teachers/stakeholders to create the vision so it depends on those voices
-
I want a create a balance between teacher & student lead activities. I am starting with room set up, then activities to promote it
-
How long have you been in Ft Yukon?
-
True. Needs to reflect community.
-
2 weeks! Its going to be an arctic adventure. Got lots of fun sub-zero science experiments to try!
-
A2 Freedom, creativity, individual exp, safety. Lots modeling.
-
-
You must read Raising Ourselves by Velma Wallis, a memoir of growing up in Ft Yukon. Fantastic author.
-
A3 Rewarding the good and collaboration with other team members.
-
Basketball is big here. I was going to get a mini-ball & pass it around the room as a "talking stick" and Student-lead rules
-
A3 Building strong classroom community relationships; providing appropriate academic challenge for starters.
-
A3: Use Ss to create norms or code, use a rubric or tool for monitoring, goals, procedures for problem-solving, build S ownership
-
I like the rubric idea for classroom management, never thought of that before.
-
A3 Do any of your schools have agreed upon systems?
-
uses responsive classrooms.
-
LOVE this! I think it's important to be as systemic as possible
-
Thanks for the suggestion. I read "Eagle Blue" to prepare for coming up here, but I heard its not the locals favorite
-
It is very powerful, especially when the students are involved in building it.
-
-
Auke Bay does too. Riverbend uses PBIS w a little RespClssrm thrown in.
-
Some of our schools use Restorative Justice practices and many schools use PBIS school-wide https://t.co/KgbBTAtMcy
-
-
A3 Do any of your schools have agreed upon systems?
-
Highland Academy in Anchorage
-
I bet. How do you implement/how often do Ss complete a self assess behavior rubric? What do you require on the rubric?
-
Sports Writer followed the HS basketball team here. Was a great insight into what sports mean to a rural community.
-
What's the data like for those schools who are using PBIS?
-
Basketball in rural Alaska in particular, Hockey in Canada. There have been 3 AK res to play in NBA, 2 are AK native.
-
More powerful when you can discuss with the students why the rule is that way instead of it being a decree
-
team that tracks it and adjusts needs addressed n celebrations. Narrows dwn frequent flyers for mre intensive help.
-
I had never heard of Restorative Justice. That sounds like a great program focusing on remedies not punishment
-
-
I'm sorry, 1 is AK native.
-
A3 6th grade team at KMS uses the CHAMPS system. It is great!
-
Exactly - looks to heal and solve underlying issues https://t.co/IQjyWsNpG8

-
Use Guiding ? for them to create: What do you want school to sound like, feel like, look like? then figure out scale.
-
self-assess depends on class but it's consistent. S goals vs. class goals. Process can vary across classes.
-
A4: I am going to implement more universal design for learning to reach more kids.
-
It's still pretty inspiring since they dont fit the typical "basketball player" mold :)
-
What outcomes have you experienced?
-
&, the reality check of not all made a career out of the NBA, but they made careers out of what they love.
-
very strong. culture is more systemic, Ss are the drivers and they own it, efficiency, teaches problem-solving
-
A4 Actually listen more than speak. Inquiry. Invlv Ss on deeper level, respond.
-
A4: We have 2 grants: Culturally Responsive Embedded SEL and cultural standards discussions https://t.co/x5MGUhvG0m
-
-
Can you share an example rubric?
-
-
-
I will post to participate or should I use regular twitter feed?
-
-
I want to make sure to integrate language & local traditions. They are great beaders here and I am going to use beading in Math!
-
I find that "culturally responsive" needs to be created at all levels. Adults struggle with this too.
-
-
Ha, copy. I struggle keeping up on these chats! I'll do it after.
-
-
-
Birch bark basket weaving too, for Math. Have you seen the Village Math and Sci books?
-
-
-
A5 I want to work on refining my math interview. Asking probing questions of students understanding.
-
A5 Love 1-1 conversations to guide.
-
If you have resources to help guide or refine, I'd love to see them.
-
A5: We are adding MAP at our secondary schools this year, and have re-designed our learning supports K-12 https://t.co/dCjD8IBr8P
-
-
-
A5 Nearpod, Desmos, Socrative, exit tickets, journals. More formative than summative
-
I'd start at 3rd grade an grow it up each year. By the time they're in MS the data set is pretty good.
-
-
I don't trust MAP data in the decision making process before 2/3rd grade.
-
-
-
Ss created a dress code R too, but didn't want it to create too big of a rubric so it is just referenced on this.
-
Thanks -appreciate the feedback. We use another system K-5, so just growing to secondary grades. https://t.co/aykybobBkc

-
Getting down to the final 2 questions.
-
-
-
-
A6: This is the golden ?!
-
A6: One district I'm working with is going to do community education nights and Ss are going to lead parts of it.
-
Why Dibels 3-5? Isn't is created for k-2? Just low 3-5?
-
Love the idea of Ss leading community nights!
-
I'm planning to do some digital science fairs to show parents whats going off and celebrate Ss progress
-
A6, well that was part of my tchr inservice today, I want to improve school teamwork to reach parents.
-
Our reading specialist in the TCLL program has unique insight, she used Dibles k-2, JSD does K-5 too.
