I channeled my inner @alicekeeler last night on my 6 year old trying to figure out how to earn a school fitness prize. The @ice_il math session was an awesome reminder to encourage kids to keep finding different ways to look a math, not just find the answers. #ice18
How do we go to students not dropping out and not being disenfranchised. This is a failure of the system. Not the teacher! Not the student. @k_shelton#ice18#ice18equity
Internet access should not depend on your SES. It is a right and our responsability should be to ensure that everyone has it. #ice18equity#ice18#d75learns
#ICE18#ice18equity Equity vs equality-equity means everyone has the same chance, equality means everyone is treated the same. Equity means some students might have more support or less depending upon need. What is more important in schools?
Being a leader and learner in a post-Ferguson era has taught us that having 20-25 young men without student voice is gasoline on a explosive situation. #ice18
Fair is not equal! Equality is giving every kid a laptop, equity is giving all Ss access to the internet and all resources that come with it. Our role as educators is to give every kid a fighting chance #ice18#ice18equity

#ICE18equity panel: It's our job to "give every kid a fighting chance to be the next generation of thinkers, doers, inventors, and creators."
One beauty of technology is giving every kid a voice. Get them using a google slide to share their voice, not just information. #ice18#ice18equity@alicekeeler
Technology allows for all students to have a voice. Use Google Slides as a way for all students to respond throughout the presentation and give them that voice. #ICE18
What structures or accepted behaviors are built into our school organizations that create inequities? If they are hidden how do we find them? (Hint: look for them by asking questions and listening to a diverse audience) #ice18#ICE18equity@k_shelton
"It is embarrassing to send kids to McDonalds for Wifi (don't have it at home)...we shouldn't have to do that" @ideaguy42 Is this different from when I went to the library for internet access? I didn't see this a huge issue as a kid. It was expected of me #ice18equity#ice18
Every student now has a radio station, television studio, and a movie production facility in their pocket, we have to find way to bring these creative tools into learning to give our inivisible students voice. #ice18
If you give students access, you have given them a voice.
If you give a student voice, you have given them a choice.
If you give students choice, you unlock their true potential.

Is that assignment reach students and helping lift them out of poverty? Is it quality learning? Is it authentic? If it's not, why are you asking them to do it? h/t @alicekeeler#ICE18#esd20learns
Be flexible and responsive to what all students need. โDonโt have feelings about an assignment. Have feelings about how your students feel about an assignment.โ Via @alicekeeler#ice18#ice18equity
There is a lot of value for creating for ourselves, but to expect others will be able to sort through the noise to find your students work and find it valuable seems unlikely.

Author of "Ditch That Homework" shares that once students leave our buildings, they no longer have an equitable learning environment. Those with least privilege have the hardest hill to climb. #ICE18
The #1 reason to stop pushing homework is because the moment students leave the classroom, they enter into an inequitable environment. Some students will the supports to succeed, and others will be set up to fail. @alicekeeler#ICE18#ICE18Equity
@alicekeeler gives powerful reasons to #ditchhw "When the students cross that threshold and leave our classroom, they are instantly in an inequitable environment." And, "All students should have the privilege of their highly qualified teacher." #ice18#ICE18equity

Homework is fundamentally an #equity issue. Regardless of what we do in schools, the external world is inequitable for students, support, time & opportunity to compete it. - @alicekeeler#ICE18#ICE18equity
Nope, the number one reason to stop using homework is that we have no right to dictate what kids do outside of our classroom. Number two is because every hour we take is an hour they can't learn what they want to learn. #ice18 cc @alicekeeler
"Walk into almost every advanced computer science class in our high schools- you will see that the majority of students will be white males." @thomascmurray That is hard to hear- but a reality- We have a responsibility to change that narrative #ICE18@briangio3

Also, they work all day long at school. Who wants to work for 4 more hours after work? If they're not working during school, then we need to rethink our instructional approach. #ICE18

Iโm so glad for the learning I was able to do at #ICE18 this week! I love connecting with amazing educators. Equity and inclusion are big on my mind and in my heart more and more lately...so here are some thoughts as I reflect.
There were panels instead of keynotes every morning. The first two days, it seems like they worked to be inclusive of people of color in the panel. The third day, when equity was the topic it wasnโt as apparent. #ice18#ice18equity
During the equity discussion, there was talk of reaching out to districts and schools and offering help. Yes, keep connecting. But why not help by elevating the voices of poc color who are doing good work in education? #ice18#ice18equity
Thank you to the #ice18 family for such a memorable experience. Moderating the panel was beyond an enjoyable time on a great topic. To all the attendees, thanks for the support, convos, and time!! Much Love!! ๐ค
Speaking of connecting...we all have to examine who we follow and connect with on social media. Are we learning with a diverse group of people? Especially if your colleagues and/or students look like you, tech lets you broaden your perspective. #ice18#ice18equity
.@k_shelton talked about how he connects virtually with a class so they have the opportunity to have a role model who is African American. This is an example of how we can use tech to connect to expand and deepen our experiences in and out of school. #ice18#ice18equity
Ken on a scale of 1-10 you did an 11. Thank you so much for valuing equity and bringing this to the larger audience. It was amazing and it was an honor and privilege to be included! #ICE18
@southjoseph Thank you for your important points at today's closing of #ICE18. @lmontgomery67 heard and acted by sharing them with me. It's a team that helps each other... Thanks for being my team!
Equity doesn't have to be color. ALL students deserve, as @E_Sheninger says an ,"AMAZING EDUCATION." Really appreciate the amazing @k_shelton for taking the lead on valuing equity. This panel was not originally an equity panel, but so happy that this was the topic. #ICE18

Overall...#ice18 was good. Good sessions, ideas, and energy. But educators in general need to continue to look around and think about who is invited, who is asked to keynote or be on a panel, who attends, and whose voices we are working to raise and celebrate. #ice18equity
And we should be doing this at every conference we attend. Equity and inclusion should always be part of decision making from the classroom level to professional learning at conferences. #ice18#ice18 equity

Can one be exhausted from learning for three straight days at a tech conference? Just ask any attendee at #ICE18 . So many ideas, thoughts, and movements. Best takeaway: Use technology in meaningful ways to have a positive impact on society, your school, and your students.
One final #ICE18 takeaway: as we roll out new tech into our classes, are we adding new instruction and integration, or merely replacing something old with something shiny? In essence, are we replacing worksheets with digital worksheets? Or are we utilizing tech to its potential?
Embedding maps into lessons completely transform the learning! Instead of looking at the colorful flat map that hangs on a wall, swoop into the spherical globe and explore the actual places that are being explored. Can't wait to get more ideas from your book!

Great #ICE18 session on personalized PD and badging with @mikewielgus and @AdamGeisen. Process for earning badges leads to generating artifact-based evidence for Danielson Framework @dg_fft. #EDUcoach support key. #207learn
Thanks @Mr_B_Ed_Tech! That was how we started the process ourselves. Figure out what PD should look like, then go make that! Definitely better than evaluating what you have and trying to fix it. Just blow it up and start over! #ICE18
@mikewielgus@AdamGeisen What is important for Teacher PD? These were audience generated responses. Great way to start, get on the same page with your audience ๐ #ice18#edtech
Thanks Megan for coming to our presentation this afternoon! You hung in there during the last session of the day, and we really appreciate it ๐๐๐ฝ! Saw your tweets re: shopping spree earlier - have fun with that cart full o' AR! #ICE18#99learns@IllinoisCIC#augmentthisreality
