#Satchat is a weekly Twitter conversation for current and emerging school leaders that takes place every Saturday morning at 7:30 EST. Co-founders and co-moderators are Brad Currie, Scott Rocco, and Billy Krakower. #Satchat's mission is to expand educator's Personal Learning Network (PLNs) that in turn will promote the success of all students.
So happy to be here this morning helping to moderate #satchat. I'm Matt, a superintendent from New Jersey and proud president of @NJASCD (for 14 more days before handing it off to @MSD_Caputo)
Good morning #satchat PLN
Scott, Proud Superintendent of @WeAreHTSD and co-creator/moderator of #satchat

Reminder to our #satchat PLN
Next week (6/23) we start:
"SUMMER OF #SATCHAT"
8 am start - 30 minutes - 3 questions
Lots of learning.
@JayBilly2 will kick off the summer
A: It starts in each classroom by creating an environment that helps students feel welcome and safe. The same needs to be done at the school and district level by implementing policies that welcome and support all students. #satchat
Hahaha and hahaha, trump is way smarter than any president before him, how about u sit back and stop bltching while he fixes the world from the establishments stupidity

Morning ! Emily from NJ- have to get ready for two dance recitals and showing my house but wanted to drop in and say hi. And when it comes to the " whole child" - high schoolers are not too old to take a break with some @GoNoodle! #satchat
A1: our school has a team of counselors that work with Ts to promote the idea that Ss need to feel safe and connected before they can access their executive state @ConsciousD#satchat
A1 Our motto is "Be Kind. Be Safe. Do Your Job." This goes for our students and our staff. Whenever we meet about kids, we keep these at the front of our discussions. #satchat
A1 personal check-ins (not as much as I'd like) & actively moving; differing levels of challenges to complete...staff could be challenged more as Ts I think #satchat
A1- As principal, one of my primary roles is to keep students safe and healthy. I do that by monitoring the halls and cameras constantly by being out walking the campus or ride in the campus in a golf cart I keep them engaged by greeting them every day in the hallways #satchat
A1: As a class, we set the tone on day 1 for a positive atmosphere that supports each student's right to be heard without judgement. A safe space to discuss & reflect is the foundation for a productive ELA classroom. We challenge each other to reflect on the text & grow. #satchat
A1 it begins with the fact that there is no such thing as my student...it is our student and it is a team effort toward looking at the needs of ALL children. #satchat
#satchat The concept of challenging students through critical pedagogy and inclusive language that helps them to "trouble" the nature of their identity and how it influences their engagement in the social world is a main focus of my preservice courses!
I think EDU as a whole could do better reaching the students in the middle who aren't academic or behavior concerns with safe, engaged, & healthy check-ins #satchat
#satchat#SaturdayMorning#TheChildren About 2000 Where’s the passion n drive for AMERICAN kids separated from their parents from violence, murder, prison, abuse, neglect(for just A FEW) I’m sick of Our Americans coming ALWAYS second by the Left‼️Our kids r separated by #Illegals
A1: The safety of students is always my number one priority. If students don't feel safe and know that they are safe, nothing else matters. So I strive to create a caring, comfortable environment from day one. Then we can worry about engagement! #satchat
Good morning #Satchat, Military Science Instructor (#MilSci), West Point, NY (@WestPoint_USMA). Looking forward to learning with you all today. #GoArmy It’s also a great day for learning in the field!
A1. Lots of autonomy. Authentic choice and loads of #studentcentered activity. We learn by doing! Focus on feedback over grades. Growth mindset in action to build grit, teamwork, creativity, and communication by failing forward. #satchat
I'm glad you mentioned for students as well as staff. Sometimes staff have a hard time being kind to each other-sometimes admin thinks it's ok to yell and curse at Ts- and if Ts don't feel safe, it's hard for students to. #satchat
A1 We always think about those tenets in making decisions. My first thought is always is this what's best for kids. How will what we do impact the whole student? We look at the whole child to make good informed decisions. #satchat
So important! As Ss and I were cleaning out my room yesterday, they remarked on how their "home" was being destroyed! I love that they felt like it was our home to share together. #satchat
A1: It’s not about test scores, it’s about learning experiences. Focus on promoting the success of each and every student. Boost them up when that are down and celebrate when successful #SatChat
Q1. The whole child is a priority in my classroom & I make sure all my Ss & their parents know this. For me this starts w/ communication with Ss & parents, stopping lessons to show the priority of these items, & not just collecting data but using it to drive instruction #SatChat
A1 From my lens of professional learning we try our best to model these tenets with adults. Our goal is to assist them with making their environments this way. #satchat
A1: I feel like I set up a culture with these tenets from day one. The kids help establish guidelines. They know it’s a learning journey & I’m with them. They feel comfortable talking with me. #satchat
A1 Our motto is "Be Kind. Be Safe. Do Your Job." This goes for our students and our staff. Whenever we meet about kids, we keep these at the front of our discussions. #satchat
A1: One way I support health in our class is by providing opportunities for kids to participate in mindful activities, which in turn makes some of them (hopefully all) feel safe. We did this in the wake of Santa Fe & after practicing drills. #satchathttps://t.co/bHuOzfW8tf
Yesterday, we—as a class—completed our first mindfulness activity. When I asked our kids to give me 1 word to describe what they were feeling, one of our girls responded, “SAFE.”
In a world of school shootings, if this activity makes kids feel SAFE, I will do it every day. ♥️
#satchat A1: I have the good fortune of seeing those whole child tenets supported on my campus every day. Many edus build relationships before they teach in my school community. That's key.
Q1: In the past few years, we have added an after school program and more food options for the population that is food insecure. We have also extended differentiation in the classroom to include both remediation and enrichment. #satchat
Robert, I love this picture and the way you are using re-imagining the classroom space! Perfect representation of practical application of something that contributes to students feeling safe and cared for while promoting engagement. #satchat
A1: The School Improvement Plan addresses these #wholechild tenets, while educators extend them in specific, differentiated methods and strategies. #satchat
A1 when S’s present, share a concern, have a problem, we refer to the rest of the class as “Team (kid’s name)” we are on their team, we collectively support them, it’s a whole class builds whole child mentality #satchat
A1: I am proud that @DiscoveryEd has amazing resources that keep Ss Engaged, but we also have resources w/many partnerships to keep Ss Healthy, Challenged, and Supported.
https://t.co/FrU8yAwGFh#satchat
A1: Good morning! Supporting these tenets has a lot to do with listening carefully to students, getting to know them and loving our students...no matter who they are! Building relationships on a foundation of trust, respect and love helps our kids believe in themselves! #satchat
A1 whole child development occurs when we return to the basic tenet that we along with parents understand the essential development of children as being focused on cognitive, social-emotional, and physical/psychomotor domains of learning #satchat
So important for the Principal to be seen and know the kids! Love that mine, @CJamesCarey is always out there - and the kids love #FistBumpFriday! #satchat
Awesome!! It's amazing how much I bring into my classroom from my time at West Point- I even had a sand table in my room- great for recreating battles we learn abt! #satChat
I encourage everyone to dig into the safe tenet as you discuss school safety. There's some great guidance in truly meeting the needs of students here. #satchat
A1: It’s not about test scores, it’s about learning experiences. Focus on promoting the success of each and every student. Boost them up when that are down and celebrate when successful #SatChat

We do a lot of this with growth mindset to help learner's be open to new challenges. Next year we will be focusing on trauma informed practices to support students in feeling safe and welcome in school. #satchat
A1. @nbpschools support and reinforce the health & well-being of students thru health & phy. Ed curricula that address lifetime fitness & wellness. Also addressing SEL of all Ss @SteveLouka#satchat
A2: The "Way We've Always Done Things" mindset often only incorporate the academic pieces. Working to change the the comfort levels of the adults is tough. #satchat
A1: We are Thunderbirds, so in our building we SOAR (Show respect, Own your actions, Act safely, are Ready for success). Ss seen exhibiting these behaviors receive a “feather” that’s displayed on their class tbird & names are shared on morning announcements. #satchat

A2: Money & time can act as barriers. Hate when politicians say they care, but cut funding to the most important asset...our students
#satchat@loveSCschools
A2- Obviously one of the biggest barriers is the outside influence of violence in our communities. And 14 years of the possible I’ve had 15 to 20 guns I’ve had to take off of kids. That’s heartbreaking #satchat
A1) Our xision statement at #SESBees is “Every child, every day deserves a choice, a chance, a champion.” As we strive to meet that promise daily, every adult in the building worked - by proxy - on those tenets. #Satchat
A2: The "Way We've Always Done Things" mindset often only incorporate the academic pieces. Working to change the the comfort levels of the adults is tough. #satchat
A1 From my lens of professional learning we try our best to model these tenets with adults. Our goal is to assist them with making their environments this way. #satchat
Educators, do you know how well your state is supporting its students of color & low-income students? Find out with our new tool #EdWatchhttps://t.co/SXLx1L2UDh#SatChat
A1: for our team, all of this starts with genuine relationship building. To push any kid to new heights, (a) you have to know who they really are and (b) they have to know that you really care #satchat
A2 sometimes curriculum and pacing guides get in the way, engagement & classroom management are non issues when children steer their learning, when inanimate documents do the steering problems arise. Student centered has support built in #satchat
A1 A1 we’ve incorporated a continuum of lifelong learning competencies into our curriculum to anchor, guide and drive learning work https://t.co/Bf4FJIMnwf#satchat
Students and adults live out their strengths in a healthy way when they are thriving. How life is currently being experienced impacts achievement. It has to be part of the conversation. Daily. #satchat
We started doing Breakfast After The Bell two years ago. More students are on time now and they are starting each day with a meal! (I wish the options were healthier, though, but we are limited by having no real kitchen on site!) @RiseandShineIL#satchat
A2 Understanding the emerging science can help remove barriers. Princeton researcher Sam Wang's talk includes brain development and his autism research. https://t.co/wqNql8NZZ9#satchat
Do you think there's a way to use the whole child tenets to help refocus the discussion about test scores? Academic rigor and challenge has a place in a whole child approach, just not at the expense of health and safety. #satchat
...and when you have that relationship with both groups and individuals, then you’re more prepared to personalize the learning, reach them on their level, and bring them to the next one! #satchat
I think EDU as a whole could do better reaching the students in the middle who aren't academic or behavior concerns with safe, engaged, & healthy check-ins #satchat
A2. Relentless (often inautentic) time demands, arbitrary pacing guides & the antiquated belief that every child must learn the exact same content the exact same way on the exact same day. Leads to grade-chasing and fixed mindset & perpetuates a needless power struggle. #satchat
A2: Lack of leadership at the classroom, school, and district level is one of the main barriers to supporting the whole child. It’s not about “I gotcha” or “it’s on the test” or “it’s being mandated.” It’s about exhausting all options to promote the success of students. #SatChat
A2 Prediciting the barriers in advance can make implementing whole child tenents challenging. You might not know the roadblocks you will hit until you run into them. Kids live in an ever changing world and what they need is always changing too. #satchat@mmingle1@drvince65
Of course, to be perfectly honest, this doesn't always work. There are students who have been exposed to trauma who bring their trauma to the classroom and it is a challenge. We do our best to wrap them in a caring environment, though! #satchat
A2 in too many classrooms and schools teachers are teaching lessons to kids instead of teaching kids lessons, we have moved the student away from where they belong, the center. Sadly many T’s are still teaching the Whole Lesson Tenets #satchat
We think of safety, health, comfort, convenience, child-size space, flexibility, movement, and choice when supporting an early childhood classroom environment. #satchat
A2: Sadly, the barriers to meeting the needs of the #wholechild are created and reinforced with site-based micro-politics at the adult level. The nuances of how we treat each other and synergize either blossom or stifle student growth. #satchat
Sometimes we underestimate just how much giving kids many choices/flexibility can mean to them. It can be another powerful layer of shaking kids that we trust them and we care about what they think #satchat
One major barrier to implementing the Whole Child tenets is using deficit perspective at an early stage. If we're not setting the expectation of growth early on in education, it is harder to show students how much they can learn later in education #satchat
#satchat A2: Class size seems to be a major barrier for edus when trying to implement the whole child tenets. It is not easy to juggle all of them when it is a 25+ to 1 ratio.
A2: We ask a lot of schools. Sometimes it's difficult to give our own kids all that they need, and we ask schools to do all that while also educating, counseling, entertaining... Limited time and resources are big barriers. #satchat
A2 Prediciting the barriers in advance can make implementing whole child tenents challenging. You might not know the roadblocks you will hit until you run into them. Kids live in an ever changing world and what they need is always changing too. #satchat@mmingle1@drvince65
A2: Class size can be a challenge when trying to individualize. Each student is so unique & it’s so important to learn how they process information. #satchat
A2: BARRIER in Education:
We HAVE to move away from the mindset that kids learn the way we did 20, 10 or even 5 years ago & make THEIR learning relevant to THEIR future—not ours. It’s all about the kids! #SatChat
A2: For me, there are no barrier s except fixed mindsets and outside influences. However, once students understand that they are truly valued & that you will put them first, these issues ease. #satchat
A2: Barriers to whole child tenets...when I feel that ‘my way’ is the best for all...it’s worked before, so it will work again, and again, and again...fixed mindset can be dangerous. #satchat
A2. Relentless (often inautentic) time demands, arbitrary pacing guides & the antiquated belief that every child must learn the exact same content the exact same way on the exact same day. Leads to grade-chasing and fixed mindset & perpetuates a needless power struggle. #satchat
Do you think there's a way to use the whole child tenets to help refocus the discussion about test scores? Academic rigor and challenge has a place in a whole child approach, just not at the expense of health and safety. #satchat
Exactly John. If people would pay attention to the original Montessori method and do a vertical grouping of students by age, as opposed to a horizontal--you're all in 3rd grade, you should all be on x, we'd get better results.#satchat
A2. Relentless (often inautentic) time demands, arbitrary pacing guides & the antiquated belief that every child must learn the exact same content the exact same way on the exact same day. Leads to grade-chasing and fixed mindset & perpetuates a needless power struggle. #satchat
Teaching courses in isolation limits a lot of great interdisciplinary work that could help our kids see just how relevant our curriculum actually is to their lives/future #satchat
A2: American culture. We do not love children, we have no love the weak, and too often the hierarchy inside our buildings reflects our culture's hierarchy. Kids know this, particularly those whose families are on the wrong side of that unspoken line. #satchat
A2: There are so many barriers to meeting the needs of the whole child, but the biggest I encounter is the status quo: "We didn't do that when I was a kid and I turned out just fine!" Second barrier is a perceived lack of time: "But I have to cover the material!" #satchat
A2: Sadly, the barriers to meeting the needs of the #wholechild are created and reinforced with site-based micro-politics at the adult level. The nuances of how we treat each other and synergize either blossom or stifle student growth. #satchat
A2 whether we have a disposition that learning for life is whole not “parts” learning &we have will to move away from academics as only driver of what we expect to develop in learners -how do we assess happiness quotient “what if we counted smiles in school?” for example #satchat
Academic achievement and all that entails is a key element of wellbeing for students. But it doesn’t exist in isolation and results are influenced by other elements of wellbeing like physical, social, community, and financial. All define how students respond to life #satchat
Do you think there's a way to use the whole child tenets to help refocus the discussion about test scores? Academic rigor and challenge has a place in a whole child approach, just not at the expense of health and safety. #satchat
Love your point. As a soon-to-be high school ELA teacher, it's worrisome to think I could inherit students who've been conditioned to coast or to believe they don't have the potential to contribute more #satchat
One major barrier to implementing the Whole Child tenets is using deficit perspective at an early stage. If we're not setting the expectation of growth early on in education, it is harder to show students how much they can learn later in education #satchat
A2: Too much focus is on standardized testing which increases test exhaustion in Ts and Ss. Need to shift back to focusing on the whole child and test scores will increase as a result. #satchat
A2 Alignment, expectations and common language. We have different interpretations of what these tenets are. This poses a challenge of what it translates into for students. #satchat
A3 @DiscoveryEd resources allow for differentiating for Ss, selecting different lexiles levels, read-aloud capabilities, resources in different languages.
#satchat
In a wrap up Q session with my Ss, they said the most important thing they learned in my class this year was that it was okay to be weird, we're all weird, and to always have each other's backs. #winning#satchat
A3 my setting does well with most; I think the SEL development has a long way to go...they can't learn to interact if they aren't allowed to the majority of the day #satchat
One of the biggest barriers is time and how we use it...lot of people (myself included) stress about cramming in that next unit, but none of that matters if we don’t slow down to allow kids to connect with us and each other....I have to get better at this next year #satchat
In order to support the tenet of "Engaged" in my own life, I'm going to need to leave #satchat early this week. My wife just woke up, and I'm going to sit in the backyard with her while we enjoy our morning coffee. Have a great weekend! #satchat
Big fan of theory! Sanford’s challenge support model also agrees. If they aren’t ready to grow, we need to create an environment that will support them once they are. We can’t “make” a student ready when influences outside the classroom are working against our efforts. #satchat
A3: Put the child's needs first, whether they are social/emotional, physical or cognitive and everything else falls into place. If they have a need, do your best to meet it or find someone else who can. It is very simple. #satchat
A3: Morning meetings and reflection throughout the day can have a dramatic impact on all of these! @responsiveclass has great resources for this. #satchat
Problem with education system is funding of public schools based off property tax zip codes, promoting inequality. Republican philosophy punishing poor performing schools funding rather than reorganizing and investing in technology & teachers dooms system #satchat
A3 We are revamping our teaching of health and working to have teachers and counselors work together to address these issues with our students #satchat
A3: my district supports beginning literacy for both emergent and conventional readers through rich experiences and a balanced literacy approach. Teachers are supported by district literacy coaches who work as collaborators and resources #satchat
A3: the @iborganization framework has most if not all of these embedded in the framework but that doesn’t mean we apply all with the same fervor. #Satchat
A1: Nurturing a desire to learn + effective ways of experimenting with things/ideas are at the heart of a whole child approach: Whole Child Development Is Undervalued https://t.co/WwjGOXozWj#satchat
New population density maps from @wef showing three countries - USA, Canada & Australia plus one state, California - equally divided into fourths by population. #maps#population#wef#satchat
Also; what if we include the actual Ss In planning for instruction? My favorite question; What would make this the greatest class you ever took this year? #satchat
A3) We are currently running a camp where parents meet weekly with a people that teach about mindfulness, nutrition, ACES , as well as linguistics/literacy. #CampK#RTBR#Satchat
We need to be paying teachers a comfortable, living wage. No teacher should ever have to work two jobs to survive or worry about their students having the supplies they need to succeed. Teachers shape the character, caliber, and future of our children #satchat
A3. Lots of opportunities to work together in small groups @KaganOnline style. Build challenges using @LEGO_Group. Self-guided @quizizz and @gimkit (students LOVE #Gimkit). Haters and skeptics scoff and say it’s all fun and games: but savvy #gamification works wonders. #satchat
A3 We need to be better with this, especially with social and emotional development. Time is needed for students and staff to talk about more than just academics. #satchat
A4: As a RS, I help Ts understand developmental characteristics in literacy. We address needs of Ss based on where they are & implement strategies to get them to where they need to be. We do team & class building activities, next year we’ll do more with mindfulness #satchat
In reply to

2. Lack of communication w/ Ss, parents, &the Ss team as well as inconsistency in a team’s vision. When parents don’t see these tenets as a priority,(& I do see this especially w/ the social & emotional tenants) it does pose a barrier. The whole Ss MATTERS!! #SatChat
Be authentic with your students. Show them you are a real person with real struggles, too! These small conversations are the roots of your relationships with them. #TeachBetter#SatChat
Superintendents and principals need a simple framework based in research in which to include wellbeing in everyday conversations. Are we doing the best for students when they are up all night doing assignments? Or would they be better off getting sleep? #satchat
A3: We have a pretty solid SEL curriculum for the classroom, but we continue to struggle to include parents in a meaningful, ongoing Wayne (One family night a year doesn't cut it). How do others intentionally involve parents in SEL? #satchat
In a wrap up Q session with my Ss, they said the most important thing they learned in my class this year was that it was okay to be weird, we're all weird, and to always have each other's backs. #winning#satchat
#satchat A3: In my high school setting, the tenets can appear seamlessly (at times) in the learning. Otherwise, we talk it out when it comes up or appropriate.
A3 in my classroom we foster a love for reading & literacy, we bring the whole world in by focusing on the @UNICEFEducation SDG’s, we connect w/ S’s & build empathy, kindness & understanding w/ @EmpaticoOrg a free platform to connect w/ classes around the 🌎 #satchat
"For you Father's Day is the reopening of a persistent wound, an unwanted, uninvited rude yearly reminder of something beautiful you had and lost, or of a long-kindled dream that finally died for good."
#SaturdayMorning#SatChat#FathersDayhttps://t.co/lkIZeD8ieG
A3 We let what's developmentally appropriate for students guide planning and decision making. We look at each of those areas and repeatedly ask - Is this developmentally appropriate for this group? We put what's best for each group of students first. #satchat
Wonderful image of creating space for a child to grow and feel supported. Any tips for making this challenge-support process accessible for a student? #satchat
Big fan of theory! Sanford’s challenge support model also agrees. If they aren’t ready to grow, we need to create an environment that will support them once they are. We can’t “make” a student ready when influences outside the classroom are working against our efforts. #satchat
A3- speaking of modeling- imagine this- imagine students actually see teachers eating healthy lunches during lunch instead of grading with a coffee. What if they see us walking together during prep instead of making copies in an unventilated copy room ???? #satChat
A3 free play in class, ample recess, movement throughout the day, language experience approach to develop contextual knowledge of world, focus on learning for life not tests or doing school #satchat
It saddens me that Morning Meeting has been lost over the years. It was the highlight of the day for many students; their version of a morning cup of coffee.#satchat
A4: Time and resources can be an issue. When you work with your community, you can find ways around resource issues. Time is another issue. I always want more time. One day, education will truly be solely about growth and time will not be the factor it is. #satchat
In a wrap up Q session with my Ss, they said the most important thing they learned in my class this year was that it was okay to be weird, we're all weird, and to always have each other's backs. #winning#satchat
A4: Ts feel pressure to teach only content standards. As district administrators we need to give permission to remove the barriers. Work to develop a comprehensive curriculum. #satchat
A3 drivers for our work begin with heart, love, passion in our professional work with the young people we serve - SEL is integrated into all we do as a bridge to all other learning #satchat
Hittin solo tonight at Uncle Tony’s in my hometown of Farmingdale NY tonight from 7 to 10 PM.
It would be great to have you.
But even better if you went to see live music near you: wherever you are.
#SaturdayMorning#Queens10K#Satchat#LongIsland#LiveMusic
A4 mindsets! thinking everything has equal weight; school is full of too much "stuff" to give everything equal attention...we must be real: some things are more critical to future success than others #satchat
A3: Quality literature ties everything together in our learning environment. I read aloud each day & the students are surrounded with books of all different genres. They have access at all times & I try to match student interests to books. #satchat
We should address where this pressure comes from (real or perceived). Common Core (insert whatever name replaced that in your state) Standards embed skills. Most states also have wellness, 21st century, social-emotional, etc. #satchat
A4: Ts feel pressure to teach only content standards. As district administrators we need to give permission to remove the barriers. Work to develop a comprehensive curriculum. #satchat
Beginning of the year: ask “what would make this the best class you ever took?” Check in each month and ask them for feedback. Observe who isn’t answering the question. Ask them individually (you have Ss who don’t believe they are valuable enough to contribute). #satchat
#Truth! I love it when #MorningMeeting continues beyond the workplace. Getting to know each other outside the workplace somehow has an intangible way of making stronger connections in the workplace... And those teamwork vibes ultimately help kids. #satchat

A3: These domains are supported, in our K classroom, through play and inquiry-based learning...students take great ownership of their learning and are so willing to share it. I am constantly blown away by their curiosity, their passion and their growth. #satchat
Including a discussion of wellbeing in post conferences with teachers is way to create a strong foundation for thriving teaching. Have you ever included more sleep as an instructional strategy for a struggling beginning teacher? Wellbeing matters. #satchat
A3 we focus on anchoring our project learning in principles that students must believe their voice matters, their agency is key to owning their own learning, and they have the power to influence their class, their school community, and the world #satchat
If a child doesn’t feel like they can answer the question “what would make this the best class you ever took?” You have a quick assessment on where your students are at feeling emotionally safe in your room. #satchat

Late to #satchat but focus in standardized testing & scores prevents best learning practices. Ss & Ts often ficus on scores and numbers rather than what is truly learned.
The humanities aren't 'soft skills'. They're essential skills/I love the wording of essential skills/there is nothing soft or easy about learning these skills #satchat#iste18https://t.co/KcGTvcvLTC
Superintendents and principals need a simple framework based in research in which to include wellbeing in everyday conversations. Are we doing the best for students when they are up all night doing assignments? Or would they be better off getting sleep? #satchat
Essentially, in the beginning our Ts came up with ways to teach greetings to another, they’ve discussed concerns, Ss have shared passions, It’s pretty much a time for the class to interact & get to know each other a little better. https://t.co/9Y9k6M0kVj. #satchat

#satchat A4: It's preferable to focus on ways to move forward rather than barriers without vision. To answer tho, time & school culture can affect opportunities to address the whole child tenets in the classroom.
What if we could shift student lunches to being longer than 10-15 minutes too? Giving them time to actually eat a lunch? Some students have only 5 minutes by the time they get through a line. #satchat
As a HS math teacher I offer to come to the elementary and teach (or help teach) a math lesson.
It gives a different perspective for the kids, the K-5 teacher, and me...plus it's fun! #satchat
A1: I also design my classroom to give students alternative seating options for their emotional or academic needs on any given day. #satchat#edmodolove
This is exactly why I embraced the five whole child tenets. They are simple, clear, and easy to agree on. Of course, the devil's in the details! #satchat
Superintendents and principals need a simple framework based in research in which to include wellbeing in everyday conversations. Are we doing the best for students when they are up all night doing assignments? Or would they be better off getting sleep? #satchat
The truth? Knowledge isn’t required to be competent in this generation. Not with the repository of knowledge at their fingertips. Cognitive processing is more required than knowledge. We are slow to change our paradigm. #satchat
A4. “The Life of an Instructional Coach”:
T: (Barrier x) is causing me frustration.
C: Got it. I’ll see what resources I can find to help.
(Researches barrier x)
C: The research says...
T: Well I disagree.
Coach: I have books if you’d...
T: I don’t have time.
#satchat
A2b: I'm still thinking on this one. With finite resources, like time and relevant instructional content and strategies, there's so much truth here. #satchat
Agreed! In a summer program I taught at last year, we always had morning meeting with breakfast. Great way to infuse the day with community and supplemental learning that focused on fun and diverse topics. I miss it. #satchat
It saddens me that Morning Meeting has been lost over the years. It was the highlight of the day for many students; their version of a morning cup of coffee.#satchat
A3: The @ELeducation K–5 Language Arts curriculum places a premium on collaboration, communication, & social-emotional learning – during daily ELA work.
It's also the top-rated K–5 ELA program by @EdReports.
We believe #SEL should be 'in the water' during ELA + math.
#satchat
Truth bomb; the empire has us focusing on testing knowledge because they know if we keep testing students on what they can google on a phone (or their watch) it creates a bigger advantage for certain Ss in society. #satchat
A4 We need to make sure teachers get the time and training to be able to plan thier instruction and their day with these in mind. Teachers need support from admin so they feel confident in addressing these tenents. #satchat
A4: Barriers to Building Relationships w/Kids—Only we are the barrier. They are the kids. We are the adults. It’s our job to NEVER give up. Sure, there will be times that it will be difficult when you have an unruly child, but you HAVE to push on.#satchathttps://t.co/n5ocFFaGHE
It’s easy to be positive when your class is well-behaved, listening & learning. The true test is when your class is challenging, off-task & pushing buttons. It’s our job to remember—we’re the adults & they’re the kids—what do WE need to do to change the situation?

Thinking today abt how we create practice where we ask questions, relish dissonance, pursue curiosity, value risk, share our vulnerability; as @MrAshantiBranch asks how do I take off my mask & reveal the person behind it? How do I come 2 know the person behind the mask? #satchat
#satchat Test scores are very important. I have not heard anyone say otherwise. There needs to be a better balance as to how they fit into whole child tenents.
A4: Time and lack of understanding. We must make the time and we need professional development on addressing all areas of Ss effectively. It can’t be something we just “talk” about or address on a surface level. It must be done so lives are impacted for the better. #satchat

In a student conference a wellbeing discussion can reveal why the student is being successful or not. Talk to them about their relationships, involvement in school and community, nutrition, activity etc. If wellbeing is off or lived in an unhealthy way academics suffer #satchat
It’s okay to apologize to kids.
Saying sorry can be difficult to do, especially to your students.
Show them you are human. Show them you are real.
Show them you make mistakes too.
Show them your love...
...and they’ll show you respect. ♥️
@SteeleThoughts#HeardItFromHankins
A5. Don’t let the juvenile theme fool you: #QRBreakIN (my #gamification twist on a small group centers relay race) is all about development. Goal is to complete all 8, and each center has a corresponding work product. But groups can’t submit until it meets the standard! #satchat
I truly believe we have to stop trying to make Ss fit our schools and flip it to make our schools fit today's Ss. Think outside of the box! Take risks! We can do this if we think differently! #satchat
Relish dissonance, but also learn how to thoughtfully reply to the dissonance and engage in meaningful and respectful conversations about the dissonance.#satchat
Sorry friends...I’m having too difficult a time following the discussion this morning. There’s far too much spam...very frustrating! Have a great weekend! 😊 #satchat
Prepare ahead of time about how you will handle student misbehavior. Whatever your strategy is, it will be 100 times better if it’s planned and not reactive. #satchat
A5: When Ss are given a problem/project within their learning, they development an understanding of how it applies to them and the world they live in. #LifeSkill#SoftSkills#GonnaGetAJobOneDay#satchat
#satchat A5: Learners are more engaged when they are working in small groups. In big classes, it's effective to move around the room and repeat directions for a task. W/PBL, it's easier to accomplish small group instruction, for ex.
There was obvious political bias in IT report. The FBI got bullied by R's. The squeaky wheel got everything it wanted. It was the N Y office that pushed for the Oct surprise to be released. Rudy was in close contact w/ the NY office. @Comey was duped. #satchat
In my experiences (including within myself), “respectful” tends to be code for making me, as a white person, comfortable. #satchat maybe we as Ts need to be more resilient with dissonance? #satchat

Well, when I am called a moron by other adults for making an observation and asking for some solutions, not just whining, then I think we need to teach students how to engage appropriately, even if it means to agree to disagree.#satchat

This outrage by DNC Media is 100% FAKE.
They actively SUPPRESSED pictures like this back in 2014, when I was extensively writing about this issue, along with many others in the New / right-leaning media.
Do not forget the role prayer has played in bringing about many recent global victories. Forgetting to invoke the powers of heaven can again leave us lacking in blessings. Blessed are the poor in spirit.

Important note.
Think:
IG = FBI
Huber = DOJ (no DC)
Why are we emphasizing this given the world is watching?
Strategic?
