Q1: Not all standards get a starring role in our instruction. @achievethecore helps us see where to focus here: https://t.co/a638apwxKX. Choose a grade level to look at more closely. What do you Notice & Wonder? #noticewonder #ElemMathChat

    • themathgirl Feb 1 @ 9:07 PM EST
Well. 4th grade is a lot of place value, fractions, mult, div and in Missouri that is supposed to be 50% of our year. But it takes more like 70% of our year to teach. What gets left out?
      In reply to @MrsNewell22, @achievethecore
  • MrsNewell22 Feb 1 @ 9:08 PM EST
Such a great question! That's exactly what we're going to talk about! #ElemMathChat
    In reply to @themathgirl, @achievethecore
  • martinsean Feb 1 @ 9:08 PM EST
A1 for grade 8 I notice scatterplots is a supporting cluster and 3D volume which I fret about is ranked even lower than it...and the yearly battle w integer exponents continues. #ElemMathChat
  • LybryaKebreab Feb 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
#Elemmathchat I notice that many of the priority stds are conceptually nec for the next grade level. I wonder how ignoring the others affects long term learning
    In reply to @MrsNewell22, @achievethecore
  • tessakaplan84 Feb 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: I've always wanted a clearer definition of "supporting" and "additional." Hard to convey those terms to Ts without them interpreting as "not important" #elemmathchat

A1 I notice I spend A LOT of time on what is considered an additional cluster I wonder why it is considered so when it is foundational for major cluster. #ElemMathChat
  • MrsNewell22 Feb 1 @ 9:10 PM EST
So true! I always tell Ts that it doesn't mean we can vote them off the island! We'll talk more about how to integrate work that isn't a "priority"! #ElemMathChat

    • themathgirl Feb 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
Of course I’ll be honest I would rather have kids strong in those areas and figure out a way to fit in other areas.
      In reply to @MrsNewell22, @achievethecore
  • JayneHaenel Feb 1 @ 9:10 PM EST
Looked at gr. 3. Noticed that most geometry is not priority. Wonder if it was supposed to be mastered earlier. #elemmathchat
  • themathgirl Feb 1 @ 9:11 PM EST
My teachers want to teach the supporting or additional instead of more important. Eek. It’s what they’ve always done. And fractions are hard. #elemmathchat
    In reply to @tessakaplan84
  • martinsean Feb 1 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1 continued. I wonder if state testing looks at these. My Ss told me volume of sphere was on it and I barely got that in before testing. #ElemMathChat
  • katrina_cade Feb 1 @ 9:11 PM EST
I've also struggled with the difference between the two terms. #elemmathchat
    In reply to @tessakaplan84

#elemmathchat A1. I notice the major work in one grade is sometimes listed as one for the following grade

  • tessakaplan84 Feb 1 @ 9:12 PM EST
That's what I've been trying to help teachers see--using the supporting/additional clusters as contexts for the major work. #elemmathchat

Hi friend! I have had some holy poop moments this week, but it has been good. I was diagnosed with strep today so my week is over. I am okay though How are you? #ElemMathChat

  • howie_hua Feb 1 @ 9:12 PM EST
A1: Notice: Each grade relies on prior grades as foundations. Wonder: How much material is not hit/lost going to the next grade? Are Ss already behind going into 1st grade? Is there a grade that has a bigger "jump" than the others? #elemmathchat
  • JayneHaenel Feb 1 @ 9:12 PM EST
A1. I wonder who developed this list. Was it the writers of the CC Standards or someone else. #elemmathchat

Q2: In your grade level/grade span, what are some topics that you wish got more of the spotlight? What is it about these topics that make them engaging for students to learn & teachers to teach? #ElemMathChat
  • tessakaplan84 Feb 1 @ 9:13 PM EST
Yes, and our curriculum sometimes reinforces that choice. #elemmathchat
    In reply to @themathgirl
  • themathgirl Feb 1 @ 9:13 PM EST
    Hmmm. I don’t know. #elemmathchat
    In reply to @JayneHaenel
  • MNmMath - Moderator Feb 1 @ 9:14 PM EST
I spend a lot of time on factors and multiples, LCM& GCF when we get to rational #s ratios, rates and fractions are a breeze! #ElemMathChat
    In reply to @themathgirl
  • themathgirl Feb 1 @ 9:14 PM EST
Yes. I think 2nd to 3rd is awful which is why the gaps get bigger there??? #elemmathchat
    In reply to @howie_hua
  • tessakaplan84 Feb 1 @ 9:14 PM EST
And the supporting/additional work seems to stay that way throughout the grade levels too. Would be easy for one grade to say "someone else must be teaching it" #elemmathchat
    In reply to @pearse_margie
  • themathgirl Feb 1 @ 9:14 PM EST
    What grade??? #elemmathchat
    In reply to @MNmMath
  • katrina_cade Feb 1 @ 9:15 PM EST
A2: I love teaching geometry. When I taught 5th grade several years ago, geometry was a much larger part of the 5th grade standards. There were so many opportunities for hands on engaging lessons. #elemmathchat
  • MNmMath - Moderator Feb 1 @ 9:16 PM EST
I teach Ss w/ disabilities who come to me with almost no # sense when we spend time with the multiples & factors we develop x and division understanding and fluency that is totally lacking at beginning of year #ElemMathChat
    In reply to @themathgirl
  • howie_hua Feb 1 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2: I wish there was more emphasis on generating and analyzing patterns to show that math is the study of patterns. Hopefully w/ Ss seeing that, math wouldn't be so scary. #elemmathchat
  • themathgirl Feb 1 @ 9:16 PM EST
Not in our district. So our teachers switch the units to teach the more fun first. I’m like. Make the other fun too. Hohum #elemmathchat

    In reply to @themathgirl
  • AnnEliseRecord Feb 1 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2: Because of state testing pressure, Ts feel rushed so Ss use procedures to get right answers but don't have conceptual under. No foundation to build on for future concepts. #elemmathchat

thank you! They are awesome for me! #ElemMathChat

Hi everyone! Catherine from MO! #elemmathchat
  • pearse_margie Feb 1 @ 9:18 PM EST
#elemmathchat A2. Don't see data analysis too much across the board. I think this is important and so much to do with it.
  • katrina_cade Feb 1 @ 9:18 PM EST
I would also love to spend more time with measurement and data. There are so many stds that are important because they are basic life skills but they are often pushed aside and not given much time. i.e. telling time, counting money, and reading graphs. #elemmathchat
  • themathgirl Feb 1 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2: Fractions. I think teachers are scared of them and don’t understand them well. Early grades build foundations of halves and fourths, 3rd has time to continue foundation. But then 4th is so packed it gets left behind. #elemmathchat
  • MrsNewell22 Feb 1 @ 9:19 PM EST
I love geometry too! At least 5th grade still gets to focus on volume! #ElemMathChat
    In reply to @katrina_cade
  • LybryaKebreab Feb 1 @ 9:19 PM EST
Geo in 7th. Hard to learn only in 8th #Elemmathchat
    • MrsNewell22 Feb 1 @ 9:13 PM EST
Q2: In your grade level/grade span, what are some topics that you wish got more of the spotlight? What is it about these topics that make them engaging for students to learn & teachers to teach? #ElemMathChat
  • MrsGriggsMSE Feb 1 @ 9:19 PM EST
Late, but glad to be here! NC #ElemMathChat
  • MrsNewell22 Feb 1 @ 9:20 PM EST
Q3: Let’s focus on geometry. In the K-8 CCSS, the standards in the geometry domain do not appear as major work of any grade level until 8th grade. (Before 8th grade they are considered supporting or additional work) What are the implications of this? #ElemMathChat
  • tessakaplan84 Feb 1 @ 9:20 PM EST
And teachers rush to fit in all the major standards before spring testing time, leaving the rest for after or to be squished in a couple weeks before. #elemmathchat
    In reply to @AnnEliseRecord

  • katrina_cade Feb 1 @ 9:21 PM EST
True, I loved teaching 2-D shapes, line symmetry vs. rotational symmetry, sum of interior angles of triangles and quadrilaterals, diagonals, and more. I really miss all of these topics in our previous geometry unit. #elemmathchat
    In reply to @MrsNewell22
  • Kidsmathtalk Feb 1 @ 9:21 PM EST
Definitely fractions. 3rd grade usually leaves them until the end of the year. #ElemMathChat
  • MNmMath - Moderator Feb 1 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2 I wish ALL grades got more emphasis on Algebraic thinking Patterns, relationships conjectures about rule for number x is amazing for prob. solving, critical thinking, life! For me it is the beautiful of math Like Fibonacci sequence! #ElemMathChat
  • tessakaplan84 Feb 1 @ 9:21 PM EST
I also wonder if some Ts making those decisions haven't seen these documents? They've been new learning for many T's I work with #elemmathchat
    In reply to @MrsNewell22, @themathgirl
  • JayneHaenel Feb 1 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2. There is very little actual measuring. Second grade spends time on choosing unit, etc. Beyond that they are just expected to measure. #elemmathchat
  • MrsNewell22 Feb 1 @ 9:21 PM EST
I feel like especially for 3rd and 4th, fractions show up mid-2nd trimester and get crammed in before testing. I wish we had time to teach it more thoughtfully! #ElemMathChat
    In reply to @themathgirl
  • MsCastillosMath Feb 1 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2: I wish more emphasis was put on number sense in K-1. What would 2nd Grdrs be able to do if we did number talks or 1st 2 years? #elemmathchat
  • tessakaplan84 Feb 1 @ 9:22 PM EST
I've heard those comments from Ss before too. "Math is fun the way you teach it!"" #elemmathchat
    In reply to @themathgirl, @MrsNewell22
  • LybryaKebreab Feb 1 @ 9:22 PM EST
I must have been reading your mind! Haha! Ss tend to struggle in Geo and will really struggle in Algebra 2 w/o solid Geo foundation #Elemmathchat
    In reply to @MrsNewell22
  • MsCastillosMath Feb 1 @ 9:22 PM EST
I think this is a really easy standard to integrate into other content areas too. #elemmathchat
    In reply to @pearse_margie
  • katrina_cade Feb 1 @ 9:22 PM EST
We spend almost all of 3rd quarter on fractions in 3rd grade. We have to make sure Ss have a strong foundation in fractions since they are play such a large role in 4th and 5th grades. #elemmathchat
    In reply to @Kidsmathtalk
  • MissMath_Teach Feb 1 @ 9:22 PM EST
Curious which units are the fun ones? #ElemMathChat
    In reply to @themathgirl, @tessakaplan84
  • MrsNewell22 Feb 1 @ 9:22 PM EST
Yes! @howie_hua, you mentioned this too! I think so much of the wonder & beauty of math is in the patterns and relationships. All students could benefit from more focus there! #ElemMathChat
    In reply to @MNmMath, @howie_hua
  • Kidsmathtalk Feb 1 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3: since it’s not a focus ss don’t really take it seriously. Don’t always take time to learn shape names and properties because Its not a priority #ElemMathChat
  • pearse_margie Feb 1 @ 9:23 PM EST
#elemmathchat A3 I think a lot of important concepts come up when exploring shapes with little ones: spatial reasoning partitioning fractions part/part/whole thinking decomposing & composing patterns sorting
  • MsCastillosMath Feb 1 @ 9:23 PM EST
Is telling time and counting money still a necessary skill? I ponder this...digital clocks and debit cards...#elemmathchat
    In reply to @katrina_cade
  • MNmMath - Moderator Feb 1 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3 Geometry is also foundational! With out spatial sense, visualization and visually manipulating images Ss will struggle in all areas of academics, seeing things from diff. perspective #ElemMathChat
  • MsCastillosMath Feb 1 @ 9:24 PM EST
Or the different representations and progression! So true, it's more than partitioning and shading shapes. #elemmathchat
    In reply to @themathgirl
  • katrina_cade Feb 1 @ 9:24 PM EST
YES!!! I completely agree. K-2 definitely need to focus more on number sense and truly understanding the base 10 system. #elemmathchat
    • MsCastillosMath Feb 1 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2: I wish more emphasis was put on number sense in K-1. What would 2nd Grdrs be able to do if we did number talks or 1st 2 years? #elemmathchat
  • MsCastillosMath Feb 1 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: This actually leaves some students behind who are spatial kids. There are a lot of other math domains that can be taught through Geo. #elemmathchat
  • howie_hua Feb 1 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: I like to do scavenger hunts w/ my Ss to have them start looking for math outside the classroom. Geometry is integral if we want Ss to do this. There are a lot of problems that can be solved geometrically, but Ss feel like it's a weaker argument (but it's not). #elemmathchat
  • katrina_cade Feb 1 @ 9:25 PM EST
Yes they are definitely still necessary skills. I went to a store a few months ago and paid cash. The cashier put in the wrong amount into the cash register and had no clue how to figure out the change without the machine. That's not ok. #elemmathchat
    In reply to @MsCastillosMath
  • Kidsmathtalk Feb 1 @ 9:25 PM EST
I agree we should spend a lot of time on fractions. Not s lot of curriculum resources lend itself to that though #elemmathchat
    In reply to @katrina_cade
  • themathgirl Feb 1 @ 9:26 PM EST
Yes. We are trying to light a fire and get more of a sense of urgency in these grades. Then we need to help 3rd/4th understand their thinking. #elemmathchat
    In reply to @MsCastillosMath
  • LanaSteiner4 Feb 1 @ 9:26 PM EST
I notice and wonder why the concepts that easily encourage creativity and engagement are less of a priority than number outcomes. Maybe if educators started with what is obviously creative in math, students could build on that creativity in less obvious areas. #ElemmathChat
  • MrsNewell22 Feb 1 @ 9:27 PM EST
Q4: What connections do you see in your grade level between geometry and number concepts? #ElemMathChat
  • MNmMath - Moderator Feb 1 @ 9:27 PM EST
I love Quick Draw for ALL grade levels as a routine for reasoning with Geometry. I talk about it here: https://t.co/mW0v8m5N8N #ElemMathChat
  • tessakaplan84 Feb 1 @ 9:27 PM EST
I always wondered why geometry was an additional cluster in 1st because it introduces fractional parts of shapes--first exposure to fractions! #ElemmathChat
    In reply to @MNmMath
  • MsCastillosMath Feb 1 @ 9:27 PM EST
It's not about our resource...it's about standards. There are many to cover and Ts feel unable to spend the time on NS. #elemmathchat
    In reply to @JayneHaenel
  • JayneHaenel Feb 1 @ 9:27 PM EST
@MrsNewell22 This is the first time I have seen this list. I was under the impression all standards were high priority. I'm glad our teachers haven't seen it. #elemmathchat
  • MrsNewell22 Feb 1 @ 9:27 PM EST
Make sure to retweet this when we get to Q7! #ElemMathChat
    In reply to @MNmMath
  • MsCastillosMath Feb 1 @ 9:28 PM EST
But at what grade level? Coins are actually concrete and representational...can be very difficult for 5 and 6-year-olds to navigate prior to strong NS. #elemmathchat
    In reply to @katrina_cade
  • LybryaKebreab Feb 1 @ 9:28 PM EST
#Elemmathchat A4: Geometry is the visual representation of numbers!
  • MrsNewell22 Feb 1 @ 9:28 PM EST

#elemmathchat A4 Composing & decomposing shapes can lead to an understanding of part/part/whole relationships.
  • MNmMath - Moderator Feb 1 @ 9:29 PM EST
Subitizing is Geometry based with visualizing and spatial sense. In OK that starts in K standards. I think T need to see how our standards are clustered now instead of content stranded #ElemMathChat
    In reply to @tessakaplan84
  • MsCastillosMath Feb 1 @ 9:29 PM EST
But at what point? I agree that money - esp quarters and the $ are great benchmarks to make sense of % and fractions, but when? #elemmathchat
    In reply to @msmorris_bhes4, @katrina_cade
  • katrina_cade Feb 1 @ 9:30 PM EST
Right now most of counting money is taught in 2nd grade, but it is connected to decimals so Ts could use money to teach decimals in 4th and 5th to make the content easier for them access. #elemmathchat
    In reply to @MsCastillosMath
  • MathDiehls Feb 1 @ 9:31 PM EST
A4: I see kiddos that make connections to shapes when subitizing. They’ll say, “I knew it was 3 because i saw a triangle.” #elemmathchat
  • themathgirl Feb 1 @ 9:31 PM EST
A4: Area models and the fact they are just arrays. That’s one thing. Kids need to have that connection. That’s Geometry. #elemmathchat
  • tessakaplan84 Feb 1 @ 9:31 PM EST
I definitely think more work needs to be done with Ts on learning progressions. I think that could help with this. #ElemmathChat

Learning progressions interest me. So much to learn about the standards and how they build off each other #Elemmathchat
