#Edtechchat focuses on Education Technology. Co-founder Tom Murray says #edtechchat "connects us professionally with inspiring educators from all over the world, all of who encourage us to be better every day for the children and families we serve.”
Hi all! I'm Matt, a software dev and teach/trainer for CS with a rural school in central WA. As always, I'm here to learn from all you edu pros :) #edtechchat
As part of this season's holiday spirit, @E_Sheninger and I are giving away five copies of our new book, Learning Transformed. Interested? Here's how: #LT8keys#Edtechchat
What's the pedagogical mission of the school? What is its philosophy of education? That is the foundation for the learning. The tech is just some additional tools. #edtechchat
My Year in Review: Thanks #edtechchat and my outstanding PLN for providing such great sites that I added to my website. My Technology pages https://t.co/rhtEBHdiQz Happy Holidays! Happy & Healthy New Year! #youmatter
A1: Students biggest accomplishment is always exceeding expectations when adapting to new ways of teaching/learning. Sometimes we don't give them enough credit. #edtechchat
A1 I guess my Ss are Ts....we saw a large increase in Ts using #onenote in their classrooms. Many also stepped out and tried new things like @flipgrid and msft forms for assessment #edtechchat
A1. Class of 2017 created this in their STEAM class. The project was two years in the making. They worked with our school board. 7th and 8th grade students at the time. #edtechchat
A1: Oof, my biggest accomplishment... hmm... I left the #edtech journalism world and instead went back to doing work closer to kids, on the ground. #edtechchat
A student who was afraid of tech in 2015 chose to share her Minecraft screencast and Digital Portfolio with friends and family at our learning fair #edtechchat
A1 The 4th & 5th grades are the first opportunity Ss get 1:1. A big accomplishment for my Ss is seeing the device as a educational tool, choosing to use the tool at the right time, & sharing learning creatively. #edtechchat
A student who was afraid of tech in 2015 chose to share her Minecraft screencast and Digital Portfolio with friends and family at our learning fair #edtechchat
Indeed! Really hard to take a photo of student art work on Chromebooks. Not impossible but hard. I miss my #iPads to maintain student art portfolios #edtechchat
A1: one of my 8th grade students and I co-authored a book on programming in Game Maker Language based on his 20% time / genius hour project. That will always be high on my list! #edtechchat
A1: one of my 8th grade students and I co-authored a book on programming in Game Maker Language based on his 20% time / genius hour project. That will always be high on my list! #edtechchat
A2 having the opportunity to speak about how some of the #edtech tools have had such a tremendous impact on my CR, for my Ss, and being able to share this #edtechchat
Essentially the 20%time / passion project idea. Let kids create a project based on their interest and research / develop something meaningful to them. #edtechchat
A2: My biggest accomplishment in #edtech this year has been my successful 'pushing' of so many people in 2017 to do things with tech they hadn't done before.
I played a small part in making others better.
#edtechchat
A2 An accomplishment I feel god about was chronicling every aspect of our #edtech curriculum from PreK-12 and beginning the process of writing recommendations. #edtechchat
A2 And most recently, I made my first digital breakout last night :) finally!! hopefully it goes well, inspired by @btcostello05 and @Ms_A_Yeh#edtechchat
A2 starting to make real steps on my vision of making a podcast to tell the stories of students learning CS. Still writing questions and figuring out permission slips, but its a start :) #edtechchat
A2: Started working for an Israeli company that develops @PlayCraftLearn#minecraftedu lesson plans. Now working on a world to teach non readers the alphabet and colors. #edtechchat
A1 - quitting my #edtech job and allowing myself the time to (hopefully) finally build out some of my own ideas again (both edtech and not). #edtechchat
We can do a hangout with @KClevering at some point if you want - she is doing amazing work in our K-6 environment. (assuming she wants to :))
#edtechchat
A2: Started working for an Israeli company that develops @PlayCraftLearn#minecraftedu lesson plans. Now working on a world to teach non readers the alphabet and colors. #edtechchat
A3 Virtual Reality - still showing lots of growth but not so much in area of education (yet) - gaming and simulations yes, educational content still lacking #edtechchat
A2 - before quitting, finishing off the design for a complete product at the company. I feel like I made/designed something super solid. It's now theirs to run with. #edtechchat
A3 the integration of Art in STEM. After her amazing leadership and vision, appointed my art director @MadSTEAMers to be the STEAM director @the_Madeleine#edtechchat
Oh, I've used @unity3d tons. Super rewarding and you can do a lot once you learn it. But man, that learning curve can be brutal. 👍👍 to them! #edtechchat
A2 My biggest tech accomplishment has to be continuing to build an amazing PLN thru @DiscoveryEd & Twitter. Presented a poster session at ISTE this summer!
#edtechchat
A3: I thought the #arvrinedu would be on a larger scale but the tools are still to expensive and activity development takes so much time. Maybe this year.... #edtechchat
A3. Not sure I made any grand predictions... Being a tech leader at my school, I look forward knowing the importance of falling forward with technology. Can't be afraid to try something new! This is how learning happens for all of us. #edtechchat
Another A1 - out atudents wanted to talk about #NetNeutrality , so we did. Now they want to call their congress people. We're thinking extra credit for letters. #edtechchat
Wanna @skype with my class and share some wisdom? #edtechchat. They are 8th grade and yes there is quite a learning curve. But one can get so excited when they successfully add a texture to an object #smallvictories
Would probably want to focus on the biggest challenges, the structure of organizing space & schedule, and how projects are connected to curriculum, if at all. #edtechchat#makered#LearningIsGood
Ooh definite possibility. I also know a person whose job right now is to use unity to build #edtech that I could also connect you with (although edtech he's working on is for much younger users). DM me and we'll talk :) #edtechchat.
A3 - Each year I hope that there will finally be adequate funding for #edtech and that more Ts will see value of paying for quality products.
I think the second part is becoming more true, but without the first... (I don't want Ts to have to spend their own $) #edtechchat
A4 I am sad to have seen the video editing tools in @YouTube be taken away. It was a handy tool as Ss created for their audience, moving work from iPad to blog. #edtechchat
Good work! Sounds like great progress! I met @RichHayzler at @EdcampNJ in session on grading... If he is your admin, you have some good leadership! #edtechchat

An interesting take on a question I get asked frequently - Canvas or Google Classroom? It is from the Canvas blog, but it does make some good points... https://t.co/zYbg6SXtbm#edtech#edtechchat
BTW. I’m planning a twitter chat book club for mid to late Feb for the book Lifelong Kindergarten: Cultivating Creativity Through Projects, Passion, Peers and Play by @mres DM me if you’re interested in participating #edtechchat

This is a huge issue! It's an uphill battle trying to teach Ss to use these tools responsibly while so many corners of the Internet have adopted an outrage culture. #edtechchat
A4 - Privacy. 😜
But also somewhat seriously. So many apps are too invasive, and collect *way* more than needed. Always so glad to see Ts and Ss who talk about #digcit for this very reason.
#edtechchat
A4 #edtech doesn't disappear, it just gets repurposed. Though I've seen some horrific things done to really good cassette tapes in makerspaces! #edtechchat
A4 c9.io was a great, free online code editor. They were bought a while back and didn't change anything, but it looks like they might be moving away from free accounts #edtechchat
Providing CHOICE has been awesome! Most beneficial for students. Some are really shining! Especially when they didn't succeed in trad paradigm. I'm finding myself working more providing feedback, balancing projects, etc. Need to find a way to streamline! #edtechchat
Yes please! We are building a new elem school and have a designated maker space. We are in the visioning process now that we know the blueprints. We can use all the help we can get! #CollaborativePD#MakerED#edtechchat

A4: @zaption adding Qs and annotations to @YouTube videos. Is there ANY other platform that's free and allows you to do that? plz tag if you know someone that can help...#edtechchat
Interesting. I think it is great for teaching Ss to synergize, problem solve, and to think critically. I love hearing the conversations Ss have. I've done them in 1st-5th grades and they love it.
#edtechchat
#edcampnj was such an awesome experience! And yes, @RichHayzler and I are admins from the same district, partners in crime and leadership. :) #edtechchat

A4: I think adults practicing DigCit has disappeared to a degree. Surprised by the # of parents/teachers that post inappropriate statements.
#edtechchat
Yes, we are very fortunate. The teachers were very active in the planning of the entire building. Each age group's new space will reflect the needs of those learners. #edtechchat#kidsdeserveit

A5 The #edtech that worked consistently well in the classroom was the winner for the year, the biggest time waster the loser. Different for everyone, but our teachers were very successful this year with Google Classroom! #edtechchat
Include bathrooms, make it adjacent to the library. Mobile everything, Whiteboard paint on surfaces / tables, floors, etc. #edtechchat Happy to talk more

As much a process as a tool, but having a few small project that are "grab and go" is one of the best ideas I've seen. Encourages students to walk in and try something without feeling overwhelmed or pressure to have talk to anyone to take 1st step #edtechchat

#edtechchat couldn't agree more! I think it was @MGrundel (maybe I'm wrong...) that introduced a chrome add on to limit back to 140. Didn't work for me though...
Had a senior CS major from Clemson helping at my coding event tonight (using Dash) and he was like, "Wish we had this when we were in school."
#edtechchat
I wish we had a lot of this tech when I was a student - my daughter has access to better tools than I did as an engineering student - with more support on how to use as well! #edtechchat
Something where an interested student who just wants to try something, and isn't yet invested in learning the tools or safety processes for the big things, can wander in during a free period and try it out #edtechchat#makerspace
In reply to
@FelpixTheMaker, @T_HEB, @nathan_stevens, @ajpodchaski, @KClevering, @arduino, @Raspberry_Pi
Great perspective!! I don't think out students can even imagine/appreciate the contrast in the two generations... If we could have done what students can do with the swipe of a finger, I can't even imagine what I would/could have done as a S! #edtechchat
I wish we had a lot of this tech when I was a student - my daughter has access to better tools than I did as an engineering student - with more support on how to use as well! #edtechchat
A8 VR is going to make it into the classroom at a manageable price point and form that is teacher friendly - so easy a Kindergartener could do it! #edtechchat
A6 - What I'd like to see (and so will predict) is a surge towards more schools/classes where Ss work at their pace, not the class pace. And more tools to allow Ts to more easily manage this. #edtechchat
I thought @EastsidePrep had a cool setup when I visited them. Eastside, can you share more about the small project bins you had/have in your space? (And maybe about your make space in general?) #edtechchat#makerspace
In reply to
@T_HEB, @FelpixTheMaker, @nathan_stevens, @ajpodchaski, @KClevering, @arduino, @Raspberry_Pi, @EastsidePrep
Yup! We have a tinker table, chalkboard wall, and whiteboard tables just for this purpose. Students can explore the tech lab without committing and take ownership of the space, even if their teachers never bring them in #edtechchat

Always the optimist! I agree, this is coming strong this year... hopefully everyone is helping prepare. District staff started with 2 step authentication last week! #edtechchat
And I agree they should anchor the space. They're great and flexible tools for making! I just like to make sure to throw out ideas to bring breadth to the discussion of making and #makerspace. Not all students will be interested in them, at least at first #edtechchat
In reply to
@FelpixTheMaker, @T_HEB, @nathan_stevens, @ajpodchaski, @KClevering, @arduino, @Raspberry_Pi
Yes! Takes a full training and a small team to get it out and back in time even close to the constraints most teachers have for a lesson! #VR needs to get easier/faster! #edtechchat
So this isn't just us?! I'm the only one in the building with training... I hope to use in the spring, but involves much planning. Hope to make it work! #edtechchat
Thank you for the insights. All your suggestions got my wheels turning. It is good to hear from folks who have had experiences in a planned maker space. #PLN#edtechchat
