#Edchat is a hashtag, a movement—it is a weekly organized Twitter discussion of educators and people interested in education that meet virtually from all over the world. #Edchat serves as a conversation thread on Twitter and is also used for organized weekly discussions.
Tonight's #Edchat topic may be controversial: Is racism addressed in education and if so how do we know? Are there positive effects as a result or is it a token effort? Looking forward to reading the responses.
Before we can address a problem we must first admit there is a problem ... can’t just sit at the back of the meeting and say “I’m not racist ... those kids are just louder” #edchat
"Bringing in a bad system is not the way to deal with a bad system" @mcguirp speaking on the complexity and frustration surrounding regulation 274 in Ontario.
As teachers we always say how we want to be free to teach as we please but yet we expect every single one of our kids to act the same way ... regardless of background #edchat
...now underway #edchat Topic: Is racism addressed in education and if so how do we know? Are there positive effects as a result or is it a token effort?
The whole month of February has been set aside as Martin Luther King Jr month so that schools might address subjects of race and racism. That's is a sad note.#Edchat
Biggest reality check for me as a teacher when a girl asked me why I was always getting onto her in class ... “you’re just louder than everyone else” ... personal reflection ... immediate impact/change #edchat
A tough Q. I have to tackle the Q on 2 levels, the personal and the wider world. Personal: How am I doing as a teacher? Am I truly addressing the needs of each student? Do I have high expectations for each student? Do I see and respond to racism, bullying in my class? 1/3 #edchat
One of the best ways to measure the impact of your leadership in a school comes at the end of the year in the form of hugs and high fives. How are you capturing your "Hug & High 5" data? What's the data telling you about the relationships you have with kids? #edchat@kidsathope
I don't believe racism is addressed intentionally in education but depending on age it could easily become a topic of conversation within the classroom. #EDCHAT#EDSP454
Computers are awesome for education. There is so much that can be created and shared. No amount of computer programs can replace human to human interaction though. This gets lost in 1:1. #Edchat#edtech#ohedchat
If racism is positively effected by the practices of the current educational system then effects should be apparent in the primarily cited educational measures? #edchat
Having taught mainly in an independent school, racism and most issues pertaining to our school culture addressed under core values: Caring, Inclusion, Responsibility, Honesty #edchat
Help me here. If the predominant practices of the current educational system were asserting a positive effect on racism... then shouldn't we expect to see minimal disparities in learning between and across groups, circumstances, locations, and so on? #edchat
...now underway #edchat Topic: Is racism addressed in education and if so how do we know? Are there positive effects as a result or is it a token effort?
Sure. I should say that I helped work on/edit a report that made the argument that educational equity efforts needed to focus on race... as opposed to other factors such as poverty, since the reality is that everything intersects with race. Yet schools tend to avoid race. #edchat
How can education address racism when public school teachers are simultaneously witnessing the effects of racism on their students/families which nobody seems to acknowledge AND blamed for not remediating those effects in the classroom? #edchat
We address racism across the curriculum. It is particularly important in rural Iowa schools were there is little exposure to different cultures & people! #edchat

2/3, still personal. As I stated in Fighting for Change in Your School, when I started teaching in Harlem in the late 60s, I believed that education would lead to success 4 each S. I was naive, some S have incredible challenges. I needed to be better. 2/3 #edchat
Having just graduated highschool in 2014 there isn't a time that I recall a teacher intentionally bringing up/ teaching a lesson on racism. #EDCHAT#EDSP454

Okay, racism and the wider world. Linda Darling Hammond stresses Opportunity Gap issues. Racism is real: underserved students have fewer supplies, inadequate facilities, fewer advanced classes, less experienced teachers, more drill and kill. 3/3 #edchat
I suspect I am the least knowledgeable person here to talk about racism. Other than systemic racism everywhere I didn't really encounter it f2f as a student through HS. We had no minorities except one Cherokee family.I will stop talking now and let others have the floor.#edchat
I heard two incredible coaches speak at my grandkids sports award yesterday. They addressed their home life challenges (poverty, drugs, w/out singling out race) and shared how they kept going and what motivated them. The applause from this white audience was deafening. #edchat
indeed, Rita ... and before NCLB there was... and... and... Playing field isn't level. And in many cases there's not even a field on which to learn, play etc. #edchat

Right, sorry. I think schools are responsible not to perpetuate racism themselves. Unfortunately, structural racism means it also exists within the school structure. That’s what they must focus on dismantling, so students aren’t further victimized. #edchat
I talked with a former student of mine that I had 12 years ago. WAIT! 12 years!? Oh my goodness, I can't believe it has been that long? Craziness. So fun & exciting to see this young man work through everything & now completing the last steps to be a #teacher. #edchat#inspired
Let's not forget that the most important anti-racism event 4 schools was Brown v Board. In the 1980, at the height of desegregation & funding efforts, we, as a nation, were closing the achievement gap, as noted in The Flat World of Ed. (Darling-Hammond). Where r we today? #edchat
We have a lot of *ahem* seemingly pre-scheduled tweets that have the #Edchat hashtag, even though they don't pertain to our topic. @tomwhitby asks people to refrain from using the hashtag during out chat, but you know.... #Edchat
That would be wonderful but not factual, Mark! We can talk about racism until we are blue in the face but there is biased with no facts. It is based on stereotypes bc many of our Ss. have no personal knowledge of what racism really is! #edchat

@ShiftParadigm Agreed. Schools have no supplies, maybe no playing fields & hungry kiddos. And yes, this is not new. Forever, or at least my whole experiences. Littles are joyous, where do we go wrong from there? What is going right to replicate? Programs? People? Culture? #edchat

If Ts are to deliberate w Ss on controversial public issues like racism then they need practice leading discussions. Developing discussion norms, using “texts” to start discussions, moving from “what’s best for me?” to “what’s best for us given different views?” can help. #Edchat
Again, the great Q raised for today's chat needs to be addressed personally, and with the wider world? What is taking place in our heart? And what is society doing to address racism? #edchat
If all LMS’s do essentially the same thing, which none is the best? Does a district, school, or individual go for a lot of bells and whistles like Schoology, Canvas, or Blackbaoard? Or, is something more simple Edmonds better?#edchat#edtech
One of the most important things teachers can do, since many of us are 1st gen college grads, is realize it's not just about work ethic and motivation! #edchat
It's not racist in my opinion. It's not helping to dismantle racism, though, to not have those conversations. And YES, having the option to avoid conversations that may make you uncomfortable IS a product of your privilege. #Edchat
...so pervasive. BUT LARGELY unacknowledged. Doesn't take much to see the current educational system is rife with IMPLICIT and Explicit racism. #edchat@franziski123@JeremyDBond

The wealth gap is so significant that something miraculous would only fix it. Government policy perpetuates this gap since slavery was abolished. #edchat
Have you ladies used tweetdeck or another platform that allows you to have multiple "views" open at once? It makes it much easier for me to participate in a chat. Learned that tip from @tomwhitby#Edchat
Here are some qualities of effective discussion from @dianahess22, but I always build discussion norms with students. For social studies, but applicable for other fields: https://t.co/6YsSfD7rqA#edchat
When you meet someone who lived a life trampled by racism and come out of it to help others, a life well lived. I keep this memory close to my heart. #edchat

I think the "No Excuses" approach, implying that schools, alone, should solve the problems of underserved S, is a cop out. All of society should be involved w schools, there should be no exit ramps for corporations, the gov't, etc. Racism should be addressed everywhere. #edchat
Modeling the importance of family with kids of all ages helps end the cycle of racism, my opinion. Just my observation. But not just littles. Schools are family. #edchat

The audience was silent (the only time at this event lol). One talked about his parents who were drug addicts and how he took care of his sisters. He had a goal, a drive and resilience to succeed: for them and himself! #edchat
Not to offend anyone, but having the choice to discuss these points or not is privilege. I am a black woman. I teach ESOL, mostly S of Color. This IS part of our lives. We discuss. #Edchat

when at a well-healed social gathering, and ppl start talking about their kid's school... often I'll say something like: ONLY 50/60% of Ss who start 9th grade finish on time...and majority who don't finish are poor, minority, etc. Typical response: No, that cant be true! #edchat
I think we approach it like we do kids whose parents tell them to fight if they are disrespected. We help them learn how to behave in the school environment. No exceptions. #edchat
A key way to address racism is remembering that our nation is still evolving. Schools are tied to our founding principle: We are all created equal. If we don't fight for that principle in our schools then we are failing as a nation. #edchat
How can I be offended when I don't/can't/won't ever share your experiences as a woman or POC? I am grateful you are willing to share what you know with us. #edchat

we can agree to this, but we know that a large portion of society just does not care nor do they recognize that racism exists ..."The cops wouldn't shoot them if they just followed their orders" ... if I had a dollar every time i heard this I could retire #edchat
I've promised a Twitter essay on some big education news in #nbpoli for a while. Here goes.
Those who care about literacy and education policy, it's worth plowing through. I promise.
I knew you had to be ESOL!!!! :) Our kids get it from every direction. Sadly, even adults feel like they can disparage our kids aloud.

Lead by example and teach tolerance whenever you can. This can be done through lessons, everyday encounters and modeling acceptance. I have heard some Ts holding class discussions about current events that highlight racism (in older grades) as one example. #Edchat
As difficult as it is for me to wade through these conversations with the chance I may offend, I still don't have to put up with the crap you and others do daily. Least I can do is listen respectfully. #edchat

@ShiftParadigm We are hearing and listening closely to the cries of anguish from our children, Mark. I think, Jeremy and friends, this topic is great, needed and will continue to resonate. People have to process and think about what to do. #edchat No quick answer.
... i guess me telling the white kid he can't call the black kids "ni**er" should be frowned upon and left to the parents #edchat dang societal norms that schools push upon people ...

After a hundred plus years, how effective has our education on racism been when everyday in the news we see evidence that it is still prevalent in our culture? #Edchat
There are ways to reinforce it. I have done this myself. If I taught social studies I would have to make decisions about how to approach it. What I have noticed is that the current generation of students is outwardly very tolerant of each other. #edchat
This topic points to the importance of advocacy, in & out of school. Social justice for all S means fighting 4 rights. Again the Opportunity Gap is racism based on what is available in & out of school.Examples? Discrimination in housing, medical, the justice system, etc. #edchat
So true... It's so important to be curious, to truly listen to understand, so that you can identify "possibilities" and "opportunities". Build on the positives, don't dwell on the negatives. #edchat

You are a professional and can take ownership of your learning. Take full advantage of what your school offers, but be a continuous learner.
Own your learning.

@JeremyDBond Thanks 4 the reflection, I think we should never separate schools from society. A fundamental American concept is the link between the school house & town. Think of a barn raising, all r involved for the greater good. That is the origin of US school boards. #edchat
Yes! And we need both, right @robertjmarzano? Attention is the gateway to engagement! If you haven't read "The Highly Engaged Classroom" I strongly recommend it! #EdChat#MOedChat
Engagement is a much deeper/more long-term phenomenon than attention. Where attention applies to a specific event in class, engagement goes well beyond a single activity or class period. When students are engaged, they tend to think about the topic frequently and in-depth.
