  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:09 PM EST
Genius Hour is also known as Passion Projects. Students are given a choice of research topic. Empowering Ss to choose what they learn is the key! #dojochat
  • MissBenner19 Dec 12 @ 7:10 PM EST
R1 no however our district just announced that they are going to do a class for teachers on this if they want to participate and learn more. #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:10 PM EST
Inquiry Based Learning is an older term used as well. #dojochat
  • CaceresSuzy Dec 12 @ 7:11 PM EST
A1: I’ve never participated in genius hour in my classroom but I’m eager to learn more about it! #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:11 PM EST
Since we are a STEM School, we are encouraged to allow Ss to use technology to be self-directed in their learning. #dojochat
  • baileyhenson_ed Dec 12 @ 7:11 PM EST
This looks like a fantastic idea! I would love to do this with my future students! #dojochat

A1: OH! Kind of. My Studentss are all working on a passion project - that supports 1 of the UN’s Global Goals #dojochat
  • MissBenner19 Dec 12 @ 7:12 PM EST
R1 b however last year I did start giving students choice in my class by allowing them to help me create lessons in my room. I figured if they were involved they were more apt to complete things #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:13 PM EST
Question 2- If you are new to Genius Hour, take notes on great ideas shared! #dojochat @ClassDojo
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:13 PM EST
Perfect! You can chime in on how engagement is amazing during these self-selected units of study! #dojochat
    In reply to @jellison23
  • ClassDojo - Moderator Dec 12 @ 7:13 PM EST
Q2 is up! Join us for a Genius Hour #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:15 PM EST
A2- There is very little structure in how I implement Genius Hour, but following these three easy rules: Research, create, present- allows Ss to have direction in their research. Empowerment is the key! #dojochat
  • jellison23 Dec 12 @ 7:15 PM EST
A2: I try to include 10+ mins a session to let them work on it. I also set up structure - it is part of their @google sites Learning Hub #dojochat
  • I_teach_Pandas Dec 12 @ 7:15 PM EST
A2: If I were to do it, there would be a lot of training involved, and my kiddos would need a lot of support to be able to accomplish this. #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:16 PM EST
So happy to see that others are interested in learning more! This is a trend in education that promotes Ss to own their learning. #dojochat
  • spring9796_anne Dec 12 @ 7:16 PM EST
A2. I have an inquiry based science class. I could probably build on that structure. It would have to be multi-sessioned @classdojo #dojochat
  • jellison23 Dec 12 @ 7:17 PM EST
A2 also didn’t give them free rein - introduced Global Goals @TheWorldsLesson and then asked them to focus on 1 they connected with #dojochat
  • baileyhenson_ed Dec 12 @ 7:17 PM EST
A2: I think if I were to create a Genius Hour I would say that it has to be something about the Spanish culture. This still allows for freedom in what the are interested in but also keeps them all in the same idea. #dojochat
  • MissBenner19 Dec 12 @ 7:17 PM EST
R2 I’m not sure how you handle it but I think the create part for me would have to be done in class #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:19 PM EST
    Question 3- #dojochat @ClassDojo Please share resources!
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:19 PM EST
Absolutely! The rule is at least 80% of the work needs to be done in class. #dojochat
    In reply to @MissBenner19
  • ClassDojo - Moderator Dec 12 @ 7:20 PM EST
    Q3, come join #dojochat!
  • AssistantPrinc6 Dec 12 @ 7:20 PM EST
A2 Daily. When I decide to not take work home, I worry about what I could be doing instead of enjoying myself. #dojochat
    In reply to @ClassDojo
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:20 PM EST
https://t.co/ktbgOangcg #dojochat Here is a great article to view later!
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:22 PM EST
https://t.co/mPUTc6If8q #dojochat Here is another! I love edutopia! They always are on the cutting edge! #dojochat @edutopia
  • mslaurenweaver Dec 12 @ 7:22 PM EST
A2: Do kids select any topic or do you narrow it down? If we are starting a unit on light/ shadows, could we brainstorm ideas as a class & then students select their own from a list? I need help with students selecting topics. I want them to have freedom! #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:24 PM EST
It can have as much or as little structure as you would like! #dojochat
    In reply to @mslaurenweaver
  • msgreenblatt Dec 12 @ 7:24 PM EST
A3 @ajjuliani has great books and articles about getting Genius Hour / 20% time started #dojochat @ClassDojo
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:25 PM EST
Question 4- Mindset and Genius Hour #dojochat @ClassDojo
  • CaitClassDojo Dec 12 @ 7:25 PM EST
    Nice resources! #dojochat
  • jellison23 Dec 12 @ 7:25 PM EST
Honestly, @TheWorldsLesson is AMAZING and kids could develop a million ideas from it #dojochat
  • baileyhenson_ed Dec 12 @ 7:25 PM EST
To me it seems like in its purist form there is no list to pick from. But I feel like you can modify it to letting them pick from a list something that interests them and then they do the research and learn on their own. #dojochat
    In reply to @mslaurenweaver
  • ClassDojo - Moderator Dec 12 @ 7:25 PM EST
Q4, and you KNOW we love a good mindset discussion #dojochat πŸ˜‰
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:26 PM EST
#dojochat This is where I started when I began Genius Hour! Amazing book by John Spencer!
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:27 PM EST
A4- Mindset can be woven all throughout Inquiry Based Learning! Ss are encouraged to grow their brain and learn outside of their world around them. #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:28 PM EST
I definitely use the amazing @classdojo videos and lesson throughout our journey! #dojochat
  • ClassDojo - Moderator Dec 12 @ 7:30 PM EST
wink wink nudge nudge #dojochat πŸ™ŒπŸ˜‰
  • baileyhenson_ed Dec 12 @ 7:30 PM EST
It seems like Genius Hour only works if the students have a growth mindset. They are learning and growing the whole time because they are in control of it. They know what they need to learn so that is what they research. #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:30 PM EST
    #dojochat #TRUTH :-)
    In reply to @ClassDojo
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:31 PM EST
    Question 5- Obstacles @ClassDojo #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:31 PM EST
Many students learn Growth Mindset throughout the process. #dojochat
    In reply to @baileyhenson_ed
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:32 PM EST
A5 The biggest obstacle seems to be time! With standards to cover it is difficult to fit it all in. Teaching kids HOW to learn is of great benefit though. #dojochat
  • baileyhenson_ed Dec 12 @ 7:32 PM EST
A5: Students could get frustrated with what they are learning. They might have trouble finding the things that they need. #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:33 PM EST
Absolutely! The "Google Generation" just wants to ask Google for all of the answers. This is deeper than that, #dojochat
    In reply to @baileyhenson_ed
  • spring9796_anne Dec 12 @ 7:34 PM EST
A5: Time would be our greatest obstacle. We only have 40 minutes for science. @classdojo #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:35 PM EST
#dojochat Another great visual for Thick or thin questions
  • baileyhenson_ed Dec 12 @ 7:36 PM EST
This is so true! If you are in upper level education there is a very limited amount of time. It would have to be like 10 minute sessions everyday which has huge limitations. #dojochat
    In reply to @spring9796_anne, @ClassDojo
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:36 PM EST
You would have to make it your own using less than an hour. #dojochat
    In reply to @spring9796_anne, @ClassDojo
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:37 PM EST
    Question 6- Presentation Platforms @ClassDojo #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:37 PM EST
Q6- Now we are getting into familiar territory! #dojochat I hope I haven't scared anyone away!
  • mslaurenweaver Dec 12 @ 7:38 PM EST
A5: Time to teach the grade level standards and allow them free inquiry. Incorporating both would be great, but I’m not sure that is reality with time constraints. #dojochat
  • ClassDojo - Moderator Dec 12 @ 7:38 PM EST
Q6 is up! The video of the kid coming back from the dentist saying "is this real life?" Comes to mind... πŸ€” #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:38 PM EST
A6 We have been using https://t.co/7rVGeBqJ5t lately with info graphics! #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:39 PM EST
A6 SWAY in the Microsoft Office Suite has also been a great presentation platform! #dojochat
  • baileyhenson_ed Dec 12 @ 7:39 PM EST
A6: I think this is something I would let the students decide. I would show them different options (PowerPoint, Prezi, Google Slides, etc) and also allow them to think outside the box if they wanted to (skits, games, art, etc). #dojochat
  • msgreenblatt Dec 12 @ 7:39 PM EST
A6. Definitely Google Slides. But maybe they can convert those into @PearDeck #dojochat @ClassDojo
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:40 PM EST
Choice is usually the best way to go. I have to tell my Ss that they will not be using posters to present. LOL! #dojochat
    In reply to @baileyhenson_ed
  • baileyhenson_ed Dec 12 @ 7:40 PM EST
A6: canva could potentially be a good one too depending on the project #dojochat
  • jellison23 Dec 12 @ 7:42 PM EST
#dojochat sorry got distracted by the vet warm, soft bed I was tweeting from
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:42 PM EST
    Has anyone used Nearpod? #dojochat
  • spring9796_anne Dec 12 @ 7:43 PM EST
A6: My ss are versed in Slides and PowerPoint. It would be great to teach them to use another platform. @classdojo #dojochat
  • baileyhenson_ed Dec 12 @ 7:43 PM EST
Yes! That is also a great tool! I love that you can insert formative assessments right into it! Also neat feature of the digital field trips! #dojochat
    In reply to @MrsASoto
  • mslaurenweaver Dec 12 @ 7:43 PM EST
A6: We love showcasing our learning on @Flipgrid, and @Screencastify. Also, anything Google! Before learning about genius hour, we completed podcast about our school garden with @anchor. #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:44 PM EST
    Question 7- Student Performance @ClassDojo #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:44 PM EST
Flipgrid is quickly becoming a favorite with my students. They love video recording themselves and then responding to one another! #dojochat @Flipgrid
  • ClassDojo - Moderator Dec 12 @ 7:44 PM EST
Here come's question 7... what do you do when one kid does ALL THE WORK!? 😬 #dojochat #askingthehardQs
  • baileyhenson_ed Dec 12 @ 7:45 PM EST
A7: I would start by talking to that student individually and see if that prevents it. If not then talk to the whole group. #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:45 PM EST
Q7 This is most frustrating to me! One student either taking over or ending up doing all of the work. Strategies that work anyone?? #dojochat
  • MissBenner19 Dec 12 @ 7:45 PM EST
I would teach either googles life’s or office 365 for presentations #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:46 PM EST
A7 I have used a peer evaluation method where students score one another during each session so problems can be addressed before the end of the project. #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:47 PM EST
The new features in PPT are neat! Sway is a feature in O365 too. #dojochat
    In reply to @MissBenner19
  • spring9796_anne Dec 12 @ 7:47 PM EST
A7: Our Ss already have assigned roles for science investigations - getters, starters, recorders, readers/reporters. I would stick with those. @classdojo #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:48 PM EST
Assigning roles is a great idea! #dojochat
    In reply to @spring9796_anne, @ClassDojo
  • mslaurenweaver Dec 12 @ 7:49 PM EST
Yes! I love doing peer evaluations and self evaluations. Both can give so much feedback and help them stay on track with their goal #dojochat
    In reply to @MrsASoto
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:49 PM EST
    Giving some thinking time. #dojochat
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:50 PM EST
    Question 8- Tips #dojochat
  • kara_kalra Dec 12 @ 7:50 PM EST
As the main facilitator, you kust find a way to navigate the workload around everyone in the group. You must be ready with several open ended questions that can redirect your audience. #dojochat
    In reply to @MrsASoto, @ClassDojo
  • baileyhenson_ed Dec 12 @ 7:51 PM EST
I have to leave a little bit early but this was an amazing chat! I learned a lot and hope to make Genius Hour a thing in my future classroom! Have and amazing night everyone and thank you! #dojochat
  • kara_kalra Dec 12 @ 7:51 PM EST
A6: I'm a big fan of Sway...said the MIE certified teacher, lol! #dojochat
    In reply to @MrsASoto, @ClassDojo
  • MrsASoto Dec 12 @ 7:52 PM EST
You definitely have to be a facilitator. Not a time to sit back when students are struggling. #dojochat
    In reply to @kara_kalra, @ClassDojo
