Hello everyone! My name is Amy Soto K-5 Gifted Specialist from Georgia! My favorite holiday treat is GINGERBREAD! My Grandmother from Germany made THE BEST-beyond compare! #dojochat
Hey all, Caitlin here from ClassDojo, former 2nd/4th T and my favorite treat is monkey bread, my mom would make it every Christmas morning. Last year mine bubbled over and almost burned the house down... wish me luck thisyear π€¦ββοΈ#dojochat
Hey everyone! I'm Bailey! I am a freshman k-12 Spanish major at Grove City College in Pennsylvania. My favorite holiday treat is my grandmother's fudge and chocolate covered peanuts. #dojochat
Genius Hour is also known as Passion Projects. Students are given a choice of research topic. Empowering Ss to choose what they learn is the key! #dojochat
R1 b however last year I did start giving students choice in my class by allowing them to help me create lessons in my room. I figured if they were involved they were more apt to complete things #dojochat
A2- There is very little structure in how I implement Genius Hour, but following these three easy rules: Research, create, present- allows Ss to have direction in their research. Empowerment is the key! #dojochat
A2: I think if I were to create a Genius Hour I would say that it has to be something about the Spanish culture. This still allows for freedom in what the are interested in but also keeps them all in the same idea. #dojochat
A2: Do kids select any topic or do you narrow it down? If we are starting a unit on light/ shadows, could we brainstorm ideas as a class & then students select their own from a list? I need help with students selecting topics. I want them to have freedom! #dojochat
To me it seems like in its purist form there is no list to pick from. But I feel like you can modify it to letting them pick from a list something that interests them and then they do the research and learn on their own. #dojochat
A4- Mindset can be woven all throughout Inquiry Based Learning! Ss are encouraged to grow their brain and learn outside of their world around them. #dojochat
It seems like Genius Hour only works if the students have a growth mindset. They are learning and growing the whole time because they are in control of it. They know what they need to learn so that is what they research. #dojochat
A5 The biggest obstacle seems to be time! With standards to cover it is difficult to fit it all in. Teaching kids HOW to learn is of great benefit though. #dojochat
This is so true! If you are in upper level education there is a very limited amount of time. It would have to be like 10 minute sessions everyday which has huge limitations. #dojochat
A5: Time to teach the grade level standards and allow them free inquiry. Incorporating both would be great, but Iβm not sure that is reality with time constraints. #dojochat
A6: I think this is something I would let the students decide. I would show them different options (PowerPoint, Prezi, Google Slides, etc) and also allow them to think outside the box if they wanted to (skits, games, art, etc). #dojochat
Yes! That is also a great tool! I love that you can insert formative assessments right into it! Also neat feature of the digital field trips! #dojochat
A6: We love showcasing our learning on @Flipgrid, and @Screencastify. Also, anything Google! Before learning about genius hour, we completed podcast about our school garden with @anchor. #dojochat
A7 I have used a peer evaluation method where students score one another during each session so problems can be addressed before the end of the project. #dojochat
A7: Our Ss already have assigned roles for science investigations - getters, starters, recorders, readers/reporters. I would stick with those. @classdojo#dojochat
As the main facilitator, you kust find a way to navigate the workload around everyone in the group. You must be ready with several open ended questions that can redirect your audience. #dojochat
I have to leave a little bit early but this was an amazing chat! I learned a lot and hope to make Genius Hour a thing in my future classroom! Have and amazing night everyone and thank you! #dojochat
Thank you @MrsASoto for introducing us to Genius Hour & guiding us through how we can apply these learnings to real classrooms! π Y'all rocked #dojochat π See you next week w @MrsFoxs5thgrade - Incorporating positive mindsets into a classroom setting. Speaking of which...
