Hi, everyone! I'm Jodie. Honored to serve as President of @ohioctm and math coach with @HilliardSchools Over break, I enjoyed time with family and reading. #octmchat
Hello! Brooke Lovely, 2nd grade teacher at @WilsonElem in Cincinnati. Over break I slept and cleaned a lot! Tomorrow my 2 year old niece is coming from Wisconsin for Christmas take 2! #octmchat
Jacqui Lehmkuhl, Troy, Ohio and I am a high school math teacher for Troy High School. I enjoyed the wonders of the season with my family over the break. (And lots of Jammy time!) #octmchat
Hi! I'm Christina... one of the math consultants/coaches @HamiltonCoESC in Cincinnati... and also the past-president of @ohioctm ... I got to read poolside while visiting my dad in Naples, FL #octmchat
A1 from my reading days....taught me to ASK what were you thinking. Student response to what do you need for the underwater camera to work. Correct answer: sun, Student response: a big fish. You need to take a picture of something! #octmchat
A1: Solving exponential equations and my mathletes were so creative in "decomposing" the exponents. Totally a different perspective; a new path to take. It was my "aha", why force them down my path, they need to complete their own journey. #HopeThatMakesSense#octmchat
A1 Before Christmas break my class was going to town on the Manifolds! While we were introduction the idea, a girl said she wanted to try... she solved it in a totally different way than I even pictured. I nearly interrupted her but I’m glad I let her finish! #octmchat
I just finished showing them different strategies for adding and then subtracting two digit numbers. It's been so fun to see what strategies each of them is choosing to use and effectively communicate their thinking. #octmchat
A1: I learn from Ss during @numbertalks every time! :) Ss amaze me with their thinking and strategies! This week, a first grader helped us solve 12-5 by taking 2 away first to get 10... and then subtracted 3 more! (I'm so jealous of their flexibility) #octmchat
A1 I love learning from students and teachers! A first grade student asked if a circle was an ellipse. I had to get back to him after referring to @kim_yoak ! #octmchat
Q2: Oh, I would respond that I want them to listen to their peers and the ideas of others. I want them to ask questions and talk. I want them to move and use tools. Then you won't get an F. #octmchat
A1: I was with @kellykir02 class this week listening to Ss talk about how they envisioned a multiplicative comparison problem. One S pointed out that a number line represented would need to begin at 0 to match the way the problem was worded. She made a great argument! #octmchat
A2 “Yes, your teacher wants you to take care of others and listen when needed, but they didn’t become a teacher so you can listen to what they think. They became a teacher to listen to what you think.” The grade part... f in math would be the function of math! #octmchat
I read two books today about persevere today. The Little Engine that Could - a classic that led to a math warm up that wasn't planned. Figuring out the age of the book. #octmchat
#octmchat
A2: I would suggest that there are so many wonderful ways to learn math and most certainly listening is good, but I would also suggest that they talk about math --not only to the teacher but also themselves.
My favorite is seeing what strategies they come up with to add and subtract, then building up to some strategies they may not have tried love to build off of their thinking. #octmchat
I just finished showing them different strategies for adding and then subtracting two digit numbers. It's been so fun to see what strategies each of them is choosing to use and effectively communicate their thinking. #octmchat
We also then read, Giraffes Can't Dance and not only did we talk about persevering; it led to how we each need different things to succeed. I think any age would really enjoy this one. #octmchat
I found this response intriguing - especially because we don't give letter grades at our school. It makes me wonder where they got this definition of math class? #octmchat
Talking about math to yourself is a great point, I often have to do that myself. I never thought about pointing that out to students - I have in learning how to read. #octmchat
A2) I would break out in a mathy "Sound of Music" paradoy of a "these are a few of my favorite things": When your mind grows, when you take risks, when you say "YET!"... #octmchat
A2: I would hope that this quote was from many years ago, but I'm afraid that many students still think their role as a student is to be a good "listener"... what are some of the ways YOU have challenged this thinking? #octmchat
A3 They know to add within the parentheses and then multiply . The misconception is within distributing the 5 and combining like terms. I'd ask them to explain their thinking before asking questions. #octmchat
A3 I would like to ask them what the “x” means. I can tell they are looking for quick ways to make the equation look less scary or intimidating. #octmchat
A2 just had a discussion today that their grade from a test doesn’t equal their grade on a report card. I told them that I am always watching and listening to their discussions and reasonings. #octmchat
A4: Voice is easy - never have one student share their thinking. Take multiple ideas - number talks is perfect for this and most math warm ups encourage more that one path for thinking. #octmchat
A4: Choice - by choosing the strategy that works best to show their thinking and then my workshop has a menu format. They can chose when to do each activity and who to work with. #octmchat. I'd love to stretch and offer choice for some activities.
A4 Some of the teachers I work with give students opportunity to select a certain number of questions on the page to work on.....I appreciate that thinking and find it interesting to see which items students select. #octmchat
A4: We were just talking about this over dinner last night regarding how important "voice and choice" are for reading... the same goes for math! I do love empowering students to use a strategy that they are most comfortable using to solve problems #octmchat@MuellerHolly
A3: I think I saw questions out of order. I'd ask this student - tell me about this work. I'd learn a lot more than just reading these numbers! #octmchat
A4: Using #notice and #wonder is a frequent go-to for me. It allows me to see where Ss might go with the problem - and I often take their lead rather than taking the path I'd planned. #octmchat
A3: I do not provide any indication if their expression is correct or not. I would have them justify their answer to me. And then we will listen, chat, reflect, bond, and grow. #octmchat
