A1 from my reading days....taught me to ASK what were you thinking. Student response to what do you need for the underwater camera to work. Correct answer: sun, Student response: a big fish. You need to take a picture of something! #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Jan 10 @ 8:38 PM EST
Hi, Brooke! :) Happy New Year! :) #octmchat

Hello! Jandra Cotts from Stow. I read some really great books over break! #octmchat
  • jcanigl1 Jan 10 @ 8:38 PM EST
#octmchat A1: I love the "My favorite NO" strategy. It helps students AND teachers to see misconceptions.
  • kathy25 Jan 10 @ 8:38 PM EST
I learn all the time from students, my favorite is their amazing number sense. #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Jan 10 @ 8:38 PM EST
Hi! :) Thanks for joining #octmchat tonight! :)
    In reply to @jcanigl1
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Jan 10 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: Solving exponential equations and my mathletes were so creative in "decomposing" the exponents. Totally a different perspective; a new path to take. It was my "aha", why force them down my path, they need to complete their own journey. #HopeThatMakesSense #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Jan 10 @ 8:39 PM EST
Hi, Jandra! Great to see you joining #octmchat again... any books you can recommend??

  • MissLovelyWE Jan 10 @ 8:39 PM EST
A1 Before Christmas break my class was going to town on the Manifolds! While we were introduction the idea, a girl said she wanted to try... she solved it in a totally different way than I even pictured. I nearly interrupted her but I’m glad I let her finish! #octmchat
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:40 PM EST
Q2 is coming soon. We have 4 prompts tonight with an end time of 9:00pm EST. #octmchat
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:41 PM EST
    Here is Q2 for #octmchat.
  • mandyrobek Jan 10 @ 8:41 PM EST
I just finished showing them different strategies for adding and then subtracting two digit numbers. It's been so fun to see what strategies each of them is choosing to use and effectively communicate their thinking. #octmchat
    In reply to @kathy25
  • chrissybug24 Jan 10 @ 8:42 PM EST
A1: I learn from Ss during @numbertalks every time! :) Ss amaze me with their thinking and strategies! This week, a first grader helped us solve 12-5 by taking 2 away first to get 10... and then subtracted 3 more! (I'm so jealous of their flexibility) #octmchat
  • cotts_jandra Jan 10 @ 8:42 PM EST
A1 I love learning from students and teachers! A first grade student asked if a circle was an ellipse. I had to get back to him after referring to @kim_yoak ! #octmchat
  • mandyrobek Jan 10 @ 8:44 PM EST
Q2: Oh, I would respond that I want them to listen to their peers and the ideas of others. I want them to ask questions and talk. I want them to move and use tools. Then you won't get an F. #octmchat
    In reply to @BaileyJodie
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:44 PM EST
A1: I was with @kellykir02 class this week listening to Ss talk about how they envisioned a multiplicative comparison problem. One S pointed out that a number line represented would need to begin at 0 to match the way the problem was worded. She made a great argument! #octmchat
  • professorteds Jan 10 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2 is it about listening to someone else talk about math or doing the math yourself? #octmchat
  • cmsmath Jan 10 @ 8:45 PM EST
A2 For myself, the most important thing is to persevere, just try. I had that conversation with a 5th grader today. #octmchat
  • MissLovelyWE Jan 10 @ 8:45 PM EST
A2 “Yes, your teacher wants you to take care of others and listen when needed, but they didn’t become a teacher so you can listen to what they think. They became a teacher to listen to what you think.” The grade part... f in math would be the function of math! #octmchat
  • mandyrobek Jan 10 @ 8:46 PM EST
I read two books today about persevere today. The Little Engine that Could - a classic that led to a math warm up that wasn't planned. Figuring out the age of the book. #octmchat
    In reply to @cmsmath
  • jcanigl1 Jan 10 @ 8:47 PM EST
#octmchat A2: I would suggest that there are so many wonderful ways to learn math and most certainly listening is good, but I would also suggest that they talk about math --not only to the teacher but also themselves.
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:47 PM EST
Q3 is coming up. Don’t forget to include #octmchat in each of your tweets.
  • kathy25 Jan 10 @ 8:47 PM EST
My favorite is seeing what strategies they come up with to add and subtract, then building up to some strategies they may not have tried love to build off of their thinking. #octmchat
  • mandyrobek Jan 10 @ 8:47 PM EST
We also then read, Giraffes Can't Dance and not only did we talk about persevering; it led to how we each need different things to succeed. I think any age would really enjoy this one. #octmchat
    In reply to @cmsmath
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:48 PM EST
    Here is Q3 for #octmchat.
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:48 PM EST
I found this response intriguing - especially because we don't give letter grades at our school. It makes me wonder where they got this definition of math class? #octmchat
    In reply to @mandyrobek
  • kellykir02 Jan 10 @ 8:48 PM EST
Sorry! Late, but made it! Kelly- 4th grade, Hilliard! #octmchat
  • mandyrobek Jan 10 @ 8:48 PM EST
Talking about math to yourself is a great point, I often have to do that myself. I never thought about pointing that out to students - I have in learning how to read. #octmchat
    In reply to @jcanigl1
  • cotts_jandra Jan 10 @ 8:49 PM EST
A2 "We have a connection because listening to you is just as important for me. I love to hear what you are thinking in my math class." #octmchat
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Jan 10 @ 8:50 PM EST
A2) I would break out in a mathy "Sound of Music" paradoy of a "these are a few of my favorite things": When your mind grows, when you take risks, when you say "YET!"... #octmchat
  • mandyrobek Jan 10 @ 8:50 PM EST
We don't give letter grades either - I think this is a result of trauma from those before them where Fs were an option. #octmchat
    In reply to @BaileyJodie
  • chrissybug24 Jan 10 @ 8:50 PM EST
A2: I would hope that this quote was from many years ago, but I'm afraid that many students still think their role as a student is to be a good "listener"... what are some of the ways YOU have challenged this thinking? #octmchat
  • mandyrobek Jan 10 @ 8:50 PM EST
    Yes! Yes! Yes! #octmchat
    In reply to @professorteds, @BaileyJodie
  • cmsmath Jan 10 @ 8:52 PM EST
A3 They know to add within the parentheses and then multiply . The misconception is within distributing the 5 and combining like terms. I'd ask them to explain their thinking before asking questions. #octmchat
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:53 PM EST
Last question (Q4) is coming up in one minute #octmchat
  • MissLovelyWE Jan 10 @ 8:53 PM EST
A3 I would like to ask them what the “x” means. I can tell they are looking for quick ways to make the equation look less scary or intimidating. #octmchat
  • mathbarb Jan 10 @ 8:53 PM EST
Agreed. Sometimes we teachers jump in too quickly to “fix” the mathematics. #octmchat
    In reply to @cmsmath
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:54 PM EST
Here is Q4 for #octmchat. Be sure to build your PLN and follow new people from tonight’s chat!
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:54 PM EST
Shifting the power from the teacher to the students - asking them to listen to one another and clarify/challenge one another's thinking. #octmchat
    In reply to @chrissybug24
  • kellykir02 Jan 10 @ 8:55 PM EST
A2 just had a discussion today that their grade from a test doesn’t equal their grade on a report card. I told them that I am always watching and listening to their discussions and reasonings. #octmchat
  • mandyrobek Jan 10 @ 8:55 PM EST
A4: Voice is easy - never have one student share their thinking. Take multiple ideas - number talks is perfect for this and most math warm ups encourage more that one path for thinking. #octmchat
  • mathbarb Jan 10 @ 8:55 PM EST
I like your take about trying to make this less scary. Panic sets in for many students when the distributive property pops up. #octmchat
    In reply to @MissLovelyWE
  • chrissybug24 Jan 10 @ 8:56 PM EST
A3: This student knows to "do the parentheses first," but I would want to know how they were able to combine the terms in the parentheses #octmchat
  • cotts_jandra Jan 10 @ 8:56 PM EST
A3 I see you know the order of operations. How could we check to see if it is correct? #octmchat
  • mandyrobek Jan 10 @ 8:56 PM EST
A4: Choice - by choosing the strategy that works best to show their thinking and then my workshop has a menu format. They can chose when to do each activity and who to work with. #octmchat. I'd love to stretch and offer choice for some activities.
  • cmsmath Jan 10 @ 8:56 PM EST
A4 Some of the teachers I work with give students opportunity to select a certain number of questions on the page to work on.....I appreciate that thinking and find it interesting to see which items students select. #octmchat
  • mathbarb Jan 10 @ 8:57 PM EST
Sometimes a district/parent/teacher puts too much accent on a test score. Especially true if scores are weighted. #octmchat
    In reply to @kellykir02
  • chrissybug24 Jan 10 @ 8:58 PM EST
A4: We were just talking about this over dinner last night regarding how important "voice and choice" are for reading... the same goes for math! I do love empowering students to use a strategy that they are most comfortable using to solve problems #octmchat @MuellerHolly
  • mandyrobek Jan 10 @ 8:58 PM EST
A3: I think I saw questions out of order. I'd ask this student - tell me about this work. I'd learn a lot more than just reading these numbers! #octmchat
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Jan 10 @ 8:58 PM EST
A4: Using #notice and #wonder is a frequent go-to for me. It allows me to see where Ss might go with the problem - and I often take their lead rather than taking the path I'd planned. #octmchat
  • amtheis2 Jan 10 @ 8:59 PM EST
A3: Tell me about your thinking. That’s usually my go to with a student. #octmchat
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Jan 10 @ 8:59 PM EST
A3: I do not provide any indication if their expression is correct or not. I would have them justify their answer to me. And then we will listen, chat, reflect, bond, and grow. #octmchat
  • mathbarb Jan 10 @ 8:59 PM EST
Why is this so important? Voice and Choice make many teachers uncomfortable. #octmchat
    In reply to @mandyrobek
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Jan 10 @ 9:00 PM EST
