A1: Trust is built by dedicating time to individuals, their passions, supporting them in their challenges and highlighting their strengths. It's about being genuine & helping them reach their potential! #UtEdChat
I think effective Admin-Teacher relationships are build on a foundation of respect for each other’s expertise in the field. Very little is accomplished when you don’t see one another as professionals that are worth collaborating with. #UTedChat
A 1 - Build a genuine relationship - get to know family, history, hobbies, and interests #utedchat
"If something is important, you'll find a way... if not, you'll make an excuse..."
Ask for my input and act upon it when making policy decision. Understand how to support teachers and not only students. Support my class experiments (innovations when successful) #utedchat
A1 Principals must know when to wear an evaluative hat & when to wear a mentoring hat. Trust is strengthened w/ authentic conversations between admin & teacher #utedchat

A1: I trusted my administrators most when they stuck up for me when parents were not being so nice to me. I really felt like my principal wanted me to succeed. #utedchat
So true. Sometimes I think we treat each other as roadblocks or something in the way of our goal instead of seeing each other as professionals with the same goal in mind. #utedchat
First time twitter user joining the conversation tonight! Excited to be here. When an admin comes into my classroom when nothing is expected, just to check up. Builds communication and understanding . #UTedChat
Absolutely! This year our school has been reading Crucial Conversations and it really has made a difference in how we all are dealing with each other in a really positive way. #utedchat
A 1- A favorite quote - "People want to be understood, affirmed, validated, and appreciated..." Great to have in mind in building Admin./Teacher relationship... #utedchat
A2: When teachers are being evaluated based on the things they actually want to work on! Being judged on classroom management when your goal for the year is better scaffolding isn't helpeful and leads to burnout and mistrust. #utedchat
A2: I always looked forward to a conversation after an evaluation. Feedback sandwiched with compliments made it very effective and led to a great relationship. #UTedChat
A2: I wish teachers could evaluate principals; I️t should be a two-way street. I’ve had good & bad evaluations... the difference was the principal, not my ability or effectiveness as a teacher. #UTedChat
A2: Evaluations offer a chance for real reflection. If a principal goes into it with the mantra, "We are all learning, including me," it can be an opportunity for mutual growth and relationship-building. #utedchat
A2 Honesty. If we want real relationships, we need to be able to take constructive criticism and learn from it, not just expect a strong evaluation for doing nothing. Relationships based on honesty grow; those based on avoiding conflict don't help anyone. #utedchat
Absolutely. This is one of the things I love about the idea of coaching, letting evaluation and mentorship be teacher led. If the best learning is student led, why don't we use the same theories with teachers? #utedchat
A2: I see positive evaluations centered on multiple opportunities for professional growth. Key is positive, targeted, constructive feedback, feedback, feedback. #UTedChat
#UTedChat Just wondering if the standard mode of operandi is never to let teachers speak or present in a faculty meeting other than ask questions of what the admins present...
A2 My evaluator this year asked me what I wanted him to look for when he observed. Targeted feedback helps tremendously. It builds a relationship of respect and open communication.#utedchat
A2: If we can't go into it looking for growth we are already going in with the wrong attitude. Give me something to work on and the resources to do it.
Maybe the eval should begin and end with a hug. #utedchathttps://t.co/r5yz4NaH83
If leadership is service oriented, seeking this should be natural. If leadership is self-serving, then it would be terrifying. I ask my students for feedback & my department too. I want to know so I can do better! #utedchat
Teacher evaluation programs offer excellent opportunities for principals to engage in meaningful conversations about instructional practice w/ teachers. Asking questions & offering to set up observations w/ colleagues is key. #utedchat
I was thinking the same thing. I have been asking my students for feedback more often lately and having them hold me accountable and it makes it so much better! #utedchat
I’ve had some great principals, and I’ve also had a few that I wonder how they ever become principals. It’s sad to see how they can make or break a good school culture and a teacher’s spirit #UtEdChat

A2: Encourage teachers to reflect on their practice and identify goals. Once the goals are identified, empower teachers to meet those goals, look for positives that are helping teachers meet those goals. Focus on the positive! #UtEdChat
My problem is always over-reflection. So if an administrator comes to me with feedback that added to all the things I already wanted to work on, I get overwhlemed. So targeted help is so great! #utedchat
A2: Principals should help teachers set authentic goals, give them regular feedback on their progress, and provide the support necessary to reach them #UTedChat
#UTedChat Just wondering if the standard mode of operandi is never to let teachers speak or present in a faculty meeting other than ask questions of what the admins present...
This year our principal and assistant principal had our beginning of the year professional development in Park City at a skiing resort. The environment change made a huge difference. I felt more like a professional and more appreciated just with a change in scenery. #utedchat
A3: Our profession should be fun! Work together, learn together, play together! Education is the best profession in the world. We actually make a difference! #UTedChat
Having staff or faculty meeting on a regular basis. Even if the agenda is weak, at least you get to see the rest of the faculty and you bond together. #UTedChat
A3: I feel like getting to know coworkers outside of work (their hobbies, family life, struggles...) is a great way to build stronger relationships. Everyone was a back story that makes them who they are. #utedchat
A3: I've often dreamt of running through the empty halls in our socks doing some sort of relay or something. But it's only been in my mind. (But wouldn't that be cool?) #UTedChat
Q3: I don't know about you, but I always feel like a more cohesive group after a really great professional development as a faculty where ideas are shared, projects are worked on together, and learning happens together. #utedchathttps://t.co/873Xfxdz2r
A3 - I love it when we take time at faculty meetings for a “caught you doing ____” moment among the faculty. It encourages everyone to look outside their own classroom and see the good going on in the school. #UTedChat
A3: StrengthsFinder or a compass points activity allows teams to discuss their strengths and weaknesses in an objective way. Then they can action plan productive ways to work together #UTedChat
A3: #breakoutEDU would be a great team building activity for faculties! Stop sitting and talking at us... let us get up, work together, and problem solve! #UTedChat
A3: Some of our favorites: scavenger hunts, tour of the building, rock-paper-scissors speed round, games in the gym, faculty family socials and karaoke. #UtEdChat
A3: Tricky question, some activities will bond some personalities, alienate others. It's a balancing act with the personality puzzle that faculties can be. #UTedChat
Learning walks are so eye-opening. It helps to see what other people are doing, get out of your personal bubble and interact with others in a low-stakes non-evaluative way. #UTEdChat
I LOVE speed rock-paper-scissors! I played where you had to cheer on the person who beat you. In the end we were all cheering for a finalist. It was awesome! #utedchat
One of my schools just had a week long contest among teams. Lots of ways to get points. One was a video, what a wide array of talent our teachers have. #utedchat
A3.b: On a personal note I love Thank you cards and one of my favorite activities was writing Thank you letters to our teachers family, parents, partner, or significant other. It was touching to Thank them for sharing their family member with our school community! #UtEdChat

A 3- We created a school video to show at an opening assembly - lots of fun - created a good vibe/energy to start the year - I may or may not have been the Hornet (our mascot) #utedchathttps://t.co/yD5O3EgZ6b …
A4 I’d go back to things said earlier - PLCs help us communicate with one another and ensure we’re on the same page! We need to listen to others! #utedchat
A4 The PLCs should be a key ingredient of support, for the teachers. The Admin. should frequent and participate with each group offering targeted suggestions and follow-up #utedchat
A4 PLCs are a great way to build relationships through collaboration. If the administration comes to see what we're doing and supports us in our efforts, we feel validated and respected. #utedchat
A4: PLC's work best when collaboration teams are inclusive, there is trust and open feelings. Administrators need to be a part of the team. Not just a part time observer. From my experience this is difficult to implement but not impossible. #UtEdChat
A4 PLC's give teachers a chance to collaborate & communicate professionally w/ other adults. It's an excellent chance for admins to see Teacher Leadership skills that are not always evident in the classroom w/ students #utedchat
A4: Our admin visits our PLC meeting about once a month. It gives us an opportunity to ask questions or get direction. Doesn't make us feel micromanaged, although we do stay more focused when he is there. :) #utedchat
A4b: Administrators have the abilities to remove barriers, to provide support and help teams reach their goals. We can be powerful contributors to teams and in our actions help build positive relationships! #UtEdChat
A4: PLCs are tricky. With Ts having very little time they need to be productive and purposeful. Admin and team leads can help support a culture as facilitators and not dictators.
#utedchathttps://t.co/ziRwH2NS47
And always work toward a solution. Like, it's good to clear the air, especially if you are frustrated, but never leave it on a bad note. Always ask, what could we try next? #UTedChat
Couldn’t agree more. Meetings should provide time to assess and assign priorities. Also a chance to report on progress. We need to have a purpose! #UTedChat

A5: when a teacher feels comfortable to tell admins what they have tried and maybe failed at, but no shame in the learning process. #UTedChat#growthmindset
A5 In many ways, this goes back to Q3. If we build relationships as a faculty (teachers and admin) we are more likely to have a positive school culture, which in turn makes things better for our students. #utedchat
A5 I believe the #1 job of a principal is to establish school culture. Other things will fall in line if there’s a positive culture at school. #utedchat
#UtEdChat Sorry, late to the party. Trust is built through honest, cooperative interaction. We need to know we are on the same team and working toward a shared vision.
A5: We have peer-to-peer recognition “P2P”. Triplicate form: one to the person being recognized, one to their admin, and one in a monthly drawing. You can also win for submitting! It’s fun to recognize others. 👍#utedchat
A5: People are hard-wired to think in some pretty negative, selfish ways, especially under stress. Make it a point to regularly state the positive every #utedchat
A5: A culture of serving each other. Our principal would always bring us a snack during parent-teacher conferences. It was great to have the parents see that kind of interaction- the principal showing he cares for his teachers. #UTedChat
Recently my administrator walked through my room to just take in what was going on. Later I received an email with only a picture quote that said "you're amazing". It was a simple thing she did, but it meant so much.
#utedchathttps://t.co/mrKue37jtQ
A5: it’s the little things. One principal gave us a signal in case he came in to observe us and it was not a good day. I appreciated him acknowledging that we all have bad days every now and then. #utedchat
A5 Celebrating a grade level each month, helping serve lunch one day a week, welcoming subs w/ a water & snack, participating in themed Friday dress-ups, just being there w/ teachers!! #utedchat
A5: I love it when the principal knows a lot of the kids (good or bad) by name. The principal should be seen as approachable for students as well as teachers. #utedchat
A5b: Find moments to help Ts. self care: take times for themselves & their families. Let's encourage each other to nurture ourselves, families, hobbies and passions. We are better when we are well rested & grounded. #UtEdChat
A6: Remember that we have a life outside of school. When that time is respected and protected we are more willing to use it to build all areas of our life, including professional. #utedchathttps://t.co/oDB51Jmb76
A6 - Know me individually, trust me as a professional, give me time and support as needed, inspire me, be passionate, challenge me to reach my potential, and assist me in making a difference daily #utedchat
