#resiliencechat Tidbit: According to the 2017 https://t.co/3SI8Jfj0R5 Travel Survey conducted by the NYU School For Professional Studies, 88% of families are “very likely” or “likely” to travel with their child/ren in the coming 12 months.
A1: 2 mindsets. I get that some families can only travel at certain times but education in important. But what if the travel is educational? Depends on ages of kids as well. #resiliencechat
A1 I want to side with students and families on this one, but I'll confess I feel differently about a ski vacation at Aspen then a trip to explore, say, Korea and Japan. I also feel more than a week off can disadvantage a student in sequential classes.
#ResilienceChat
Ss should travel if they can, however it takes from the overall learning to travel in the school year. Perhaps there should be ways to build it in or should be done over breaks? #resiliencechat
I just talked to a tch. before this chat and he said a similar thing: There is a difference b/t traveling to another continent/country vs. Disneyland #resiliencechat

A1 Realistically, too, there's a socioeconomic aspect to this. Some kids' families simply can't afford to take trips, school year or not. I feel like that needs to be considered somehow.
#ResilienceChat
We will generally excuse a child if the family asks ahead but work very hard to get them to schedule a trip that overlaps with a regular vacation, to somewhat limit missed classes and the difficulties of making up work (and/or teachers choosing what to cut).
#ResilienceChat
To get an enriched learning environment. There are some things that cannot be replicated. Perhaps Ts should also be granted that time. Maybe we all need a May term? #resiliencechat
A2 Not sure there are any. But if that is when the opportunity presents itself or if there's a family emergency, then good be huge benefits. #resiliencechat
A2: family time. Learning about new cultures. Employing your second language skills or first if it's not what you use all the time. Seeing another part of the world that's not like how you live. #resiliencechat
A2 The benefits of travel are there through the year, school or no. #justsayin' For me, it's about experiencing other cultures, other ways of thinking, stretching your mind, gaining perspective, aesthetic appreciation... even within your own country.
#ResilienceChat
A2: Learning need not be done solely at school. Watched my sons in a new city last month and their experiences/memories are irreplaceable and permanent. Exposure to new perspectives defines learning in my opinion. Traveling can do that! #resiliencechat
I like that last part you mention..."even within your own country." Truth be known, I am an advocate of travel and see so many benefits... #resiliencechat
I am a SPED teacher and my dream would be to take my room to a cultural experience outside 'here.' This would be an undertaking, but they will not otherwise get the opportunity. No idea how to make that happen. #resiliencechat
A2 I will say one of our students had an opportunity to intern at the Winter Olympic Games. That's the sort of thing that can't happen any other time, and to which it's hard to say "no." (We said "yes.")
#ResilienceChat
A1 #resiliencechat Spent some time working on #equity as a major issue today across the District, and I’m struck that due to economic issues, we have so many families who might never have an opportunity to “travel” for vacation or fun. Just struck me that they don’t have a choice
Honestly, I felt far more culture shock the first time I went to South Carolina than I ever did living in France and travelling in Europe. Not that I don't now have dear friends there...
#ResilienceChat
I went with my mom and dad to New Orleans. She attended a French teacher's convention. Didn't require time away from school, however, but it was still a pretty cool experience. #resiliencechat
In our global world when we are seeking to expand opportunities for children, I would love to be able to provide access to all of our children to gain experiential knowledge that often comes with the opportunities to travel, visit new places, and see a new future. #resiliencechat
A3: aside from the obvious of missing classes, what message is sent to larger community if attendance is not a priority. That being said, Ss deserve a worthwhile experience each day they’re present #resiliencechat
We talk about that a lot at my school as we do offer foreign travel but worry about what is effectively an economic dividing line excluding many of our kids. We're trying to find a solution but haven't yet.

#resiliencechat one of my favourite experiences as a kid was meeting a waiter in Georgia who complained about Canadians &then found out we were. Then I pointed out a family of cdns that walked in &he was like y'all can tell by just looking at them. 🇨🇦 on shirt. LOL age 15.
I believe she plans to make a housemeeting presentation at some point in time. I don't actually teach her, nor advise her, so I don't personally know a lot of the details.
#ResilienceChat
Q4: Many teachers create independent projects for students who are away from school for an extended period of time. What might some of those projects be? #resiliencechat
#Resiliencechat I am all for us providing as many opportunities through our District. We continue to have #STEM and #Robotics Teams who have competed in the national competitions, and we seek to provide access for all team members.
A3 In classes like math and language, where each day builds on the last, missing a bunch of days means both catching up and trying to understand the new stuff as you go. A strain on kids and teachers.
#ResilienceChat
A4: compare and contrast the area to your area... if not on a resort. Cultural differences. Research the area for presentation. Exports. Main industry. People. Lots of ideas. #resiliencechat
In theory, and most of time depending on destination, kids could keep up with those sequential classes during their absence. Many honestly intend to. But in practice, that happens relatively rarely.
#ResilienceChat
There is a financial component to consider. If the Independent Study is less than 5 days, then I believe we cannot collect on the attendance of the child. So, taking a day or two here or there, actually hurts the entire system. #resiliencechat Less money = Less opportunity 4 all
Re: A4 Tidbit: My mother has extended family in Texas. We would take car trips during the summer down there. I would choose books from the library and read along the way. #resiliencechat
Yes. The school district I once taught in was pretty strict about this yet SO MANY families took travel time--some up to a month--to visit "home" countries. #resiliencechat
A4 One book I read was about the Incas. One book was about vocabulary. One word was "sallow." And my mother's maiden name was similar. I annoyed her no end with the word play. #resiliencechat
Q6: What are some questions parents should ask or things parents should take into consideration before deciding to take their child/ren out of school for travel? #resiliencechat
? Difference between a remembered real experience and a remembered imagined or virtual experience? Travel thru school virtual experiences may be much more impactful? Reason to be present. #2RGCC#resiliencechat
A6: Parents should consider or ask when an upcoming test or important event is going to happen so that student doesn’t miss out, again speaking from experience. #resiliencechat
Does it need to happen now, or is there a better time? Will the learning outweigh what they are missing? How can I help them keep up with what they are missing? #resiliencechat
A6 Question to ask, if the reason for travel is extenuating circumstances will there be time for homework? And will it be too emotional for the child to concentrate on that homework? #resiliencechat
I am traveling tomorrow. Going to the cancer center for blood work and then back on Wednesday to see my oncologist. Oh, wait. That's not what you meant. #resiliencechat
As always, I continue to be grateful to everyone who takes the time to participate in #resiliencechat whether it be during "real time" or through reading the archives and responding later.
