We will be using the Q1: A1: format for questions and responses. Let's get started!
-
Justin Carey HC Atholton HS in Columbia, MD
-
Q1: When do you begin making adjustments to your offensive and defensive scheme?
-
A1: we started as soon as our season was over and stats were compiled. Looked at who was coming back and their strengths.
-
A1: Any major changes regarding scheme occur post season, but tweaks are always being made
-
A1: Began immediately after season. Looked at stats, evaluated what cost us games and won us games based on scheme
-
How do you determine the scheme cost the game rather than player error?
-
A1: We also made weekly changes that were necessary based on what we saw from film on upcoming team.
-
A1: Once after all team camps in summer and into training camp we tweak items there. Summer we try to work base items as much
-
Jarrod Remer OL DL Cedarville high school Cedarville, AR . Checkin in late
-
A1 Cont: Try to get everyone to understand base concepts first before tweaks.
-
Something to visit in off-season after evaluating your talent & what your opponents did well to score or defend your scheme
-
-
Q1: When do you begin making adjustments to your offensive and defensive scheme?
-
Jeff Jones, HC Garden City (Tx)
-
A1: But like everyone else, we are looking to put players in best position at end of the day
-
A1: we tweak both week to week depending on matchup. Major changes happen after the season, when we go over our new roster
-
Jeremy Hanson, HC/OC Blair-Taylor, WI
-
ownJake Timmerman OL coach @ Northside in GA
-
A1 cont: as we gone through the summer we have tweaked a few things due to personnel but no big system changes.
-
A1 cont again things on paper or on the board don't always translate to the field.
-
Q2: What have you found to be the most reliable source to find inspiration?
-
A1) We run double wing so there's not a lot of tweaking. More like fine tuning the meat grinder
-
A1: we add some new wrinkles to our base, but really make big adj after 1st scrim
-
A1) Save major adjustments for post season (typically) and make minor tweaks and adjustments week to week as needed
-
Inseason, losing makes u evaluate a lot. Get best players on the field but what do ur players do well? Adjust to bread & butter
-
-
Q1: When do you begin making adjustments to your offensive and defensive scheme?
-
A2: just being around the kids and seeing the pride on their face when the hard work they put in equals winning on Fridays
-
Networking with successful coaches that are great communicators with people. Transformational Coaches. Inspires me to help kids
-
-
Q2: What have you found to be the most reliable source to find inspiration?
-
A2: I stay pretty inspired anyway, the team stays inspired to carry on our tradition. It's nice!
-
A2: Talking with other coaches and studying teams that are better than us
-
Freddy Gonzalez, Defensive Coordinator Socorro, TX
-
A2: looking at last years experiences, setting goals and establishing expectations. Could be reduce TOs cause more.
-
Anyone on that is anti sport specialization in high school/youth sports please follow my page !
-
A2: part two. Speaking with other coaches on these chats and at various clinics. Most are more than happy to talk some ball
-
A2: The feeling you experience after getting a W. Seeing all the hard work pay off. Also love seeing the kids develop as people
-
-
A2) Seeing the look of pride & satisfaction on the kids' faces after a big win knowing all the hard work that went into each one
-
A2 cont: clinic with other coaches trade film and see what trends we showed firms how we plan for the next season.
-
A2: part 2, being so close the last 2 years has been motivating as well
-
Q3: What are some examples of tweeks you look to make to your systems?
-
A1)Once you evaluate your athletes, you're able to determine what scheme works best. If change is needed work off the base scheme
-
Cody G Park City, UT DC/LB/RB. A2) Failure.
-
A3: how to get outside faster and stop people from getting to the outside faster. Lol
-
A3) First one is are we playing a 1 tech or 2i? How good is the center?
-
A3: could range from personnel changes, certain items based on film study for coverage or blitz, etc
-
A3) On Off, the past few years, was always looking for diff ways to deal w/ scrape exchange & changeups to our option attack
-
A3: cont I think you have to look at every aspect of your program and how you can improve it.
-
A3: Blocking scheme based on the athletes returning or added to the OL, adding pass concepts to get the ball to playmakers, etc
-
A3: offensively i want to use spread formations a bit more, even though our tight stuff has been effective
-
A2) Your athletes should be your inspirarion. Become a better coach for them. Attend clinics, talk to other coaches, etc
-
Q1) The season you make adjustments based on strength and weakness of players. Off-season is when you go plays.
-

HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Q3: What are some examples of tweeks you look to make to your systems?
-
A3) we clean up terminology, try to simplify it. Also look a blocking schemes, and tweek defensive packages based on talent
-
A3) Personnel and Offensive philosophy of the opposing coach. I run a 3-3-5 but will adjust depending on formation and D and D.
-
Q2) I found myself finding inspiration through other coaches, from experience or books.
-
Q4: How do players impact what you do offensively or defensively?
-
A3) From a 3-3-5 for example I can go to a 4 man front or 5 man front without having to change personnel.
-
A4: It impacts it greatly. The better and almost more importantly the smarter they are the more you can do with them.
-
A3: Is there anyone on their defense we can pick on? Where are our best matchups? Do we need to run a wham vs traditional trap ?
-
A4) It's gotta start with the players! Think players -> formations -> plays. Not about Xs and Os, but the Jimmys and Joes
-
Q3) I look at how I can either get more reps and/or better utilize players
-
A4: Being football smart is to me almost more critical than being really athletic. If your smart, see things faster, play faster
-
A4: Players make a huge difference. Not only their talent, but their knowledge and work effort are huge factors
-
A2) easy answer is to communicate with successful coaches but negative coaches have given me plenty inspiration to do better
-
A4: Make sure your athletes are in positions to make big plays
-
A4: he stole my answer
-
-
A4) It's gotta start with the players! Think players -> formations -> plays. Not about Xs and Os, but the Jimmys and Joes
-
Q4) At the end of the day players make plays. That doesn't change regardless of the offense or defense system each one has won.
-
A4) Personnel determines what you are able to run. I run a 3-3-5, but if I have more DL than LBs I'm running a 4 man front.
-
Q5: How do coaches impact what you do offensively or defensively?
-
Speaking yearly, usually after clinic season. Find the coaches that have what you need. Be a sponge, learn!
-
A4) I don't believe you should deviate too much from you base scheme but you have to play with to your strengths.
-
A5: we are lucky to have very knowledgeable football coaches. All ideas are discussed when game planning, etc
-
A2: Talking to mentor coaches during clinic season
-
A5: It impacts it a ton. Do they run/throw to certain guys or parts of field. Do they have formation tendencies.
-
Defensively: Add or cut down on Fronts. Offensively: By week 4, run the plays our kids know best. Practice best explosive plays
-
-
Q3: What are some examples of tweeks you look to make to your systems?
-
A5 Cont: Do they run or throw where certain people are lined up at, etc
-
Q5) Coaches impact me a lot because I am always looking for a nugget or two to improve as a person, coach and father.
-
Jimmies & Joes. Have 2 scheme 2 the ability of the Athletes u have each year. NFL playbook looks great w/ NFL talent. Be Smart
-
-
Q4: How do players impact what you do offensively or defensively?
-
Your district competition always serves as a motivating factor so the coaches that you play.
-
A5) As a young coach I try to pick up nuggets of info & advice as often as I can. Just try to soak it all in lol
-
A5: The teaching ability of each coach on staff is extremely important since they are tasked with teaching scheme to the players
-
A5) Coaches must be able to implement your scheme. Whether you're a young coach or veteran, you must learn the system.
-
A5: It is important to have a system in your coaching staff to educate and support young coaches and new coaches
-
Q6: If you don't change something about your offense or defense, what do you change to improve your results?
-
A5: Love picking coaches brains for little tidbits as well. Always something you can learn.
-
A5: All about placement of people's strength. HC should learn the area of need if you are under staffed.
-
-
Q5: How do coaches impact what you do offensively or defensively?
-
A6: we cut down and get back to fundamentals. Do a few things great rather than a lot of things mediocre
-
Q6) I think you adjust practice schedule to improve results can't get bored with reps and you have to know your players ability.
-
A6: From defensive perspective, it's about swarming and getting everyone to the ball and doing are non negotiables.
-
Who do you drop down as your 4th usually?
-
A5 cnt:Two positions I wouldn't put Weak Coaches @ r OL & QB. Must have Football Junky Coaches that r WILLING 2 learn/get better
-
-
Q5: How do coaches impact what you do offensively or defensively?
-
Extra Point: If it's something you've always done you know the results already. Change is a good thing that CAN be a great thing
-
Thank you for joining on Tinkering With Your System!
-
A6: Get better at teaching your athletes! Raise their football IQ, get the most out of your off season work!
-
A5) HC should not promote coaches that are not ready to lead. I've seen situations where HC promotes his friend. Bad for morale.
-
Thank you for supporting and our network!
