Oh it's over now! Back on the road!
-
Hi Sandy Otto, middle school ELA from MN. Loving every minute of my Divergent gamification. Thx for all the help! Great community.
-
Nice to have you back didn’t recognize you with new avatar… Glad you could make it back and thanks for watching the VLOG
-
my pleasure this is one of my every chats each week filled with awesome ideas that level up my teaching
-
-
-
-
Thanks! So inspired by the Ss enthusiasm. They are driving this thing.
-
loved the vlog New avatar from my high school robotics team
-
A1:With the current Jurassic game they earn “extraction codes” from graded assessments to leave the abandoned park.
-
A1: My badges hold XP and build within each unit. diff XP levels gain diff adv for assessment at end of unit.
-
Greetings joining in a bit late! Stefanie from Peoria, IL and I teach 2nd grade!
-
A1: Some items they can earn to use are "cheat sheets" or the ability to ask if a Q is right or for a hint
-
A1:Fountain of Knowledge, you and one other person go to the drinking fountain for 2 min in a test and confer? Just came up with this
-
LOVE this idea and love the theme behind it.
-
Like the idea of cheat sheets as something they can earn.
-
a1) cheat sheets (or fragments of), remove choices of multiple choice, ask how many are wrong, check the book, use notes
-
They are literally racing to get in my classroom each day. ❤️ it!
-
Would skills mastered badges work?
-
A1: Traveling Sage item, only sub can give it out allows Ss to reassess their target by just talking me about it once per unit.
-
They get an index card that they can put what they like Helps them prioritize the info
-
A1: Ss can earn 3 levels within unit. Apprentice can use 3x5 card, Sous Chef can use full page notes, Masterchef is exempt!
-
A1 my HS algebra teacher might have given me the "Thanks for showing up" or "Yep there's a pulse" Badge
-
this is such an awesome idea I really want to borrow some of this for my genetics in a next your account when
-
High praise of your hard work and their desire to learn… done right is a powerful tool. https://t.co/44VbsjtEpY
-
-
They are literally racing to get in my classroom each day. ❤️ it!
-
-
I like the ideas of levels within! Do these levels apply for every quest? Or does it just depend?
-
A1 Use games, , to have students give their work. Maybe to compete
-
Love the three levels of this item or power up… Great idea. https://t.co/avfVjO03E5
-
-
A1: Ss can earn 3 levels within unit. Apprentice can use 3x5 card, Sous Chef can use full page notes, Masterchef is exempt!
-
-
At this point, the XP start over with next unit. However if they go above & beyond MC status, xtra pts carryover
-
A1 unit themed badges after completing elite boss i.e. unit test w/, trying to give new perk card every couple units unit.
-
I like that! Might need to make a sub only resource (item)
-
-
I like a sub based item, but I don't like being gone!
-
Thanks for joining in the fun tonight Mari… So many item ideas. I could talk about them all night.
-
Don’t have to be, You could give it to your Principle or Janitor and tell them to Pay it forward to 1 of your Ss.
-
Sorry crew, I'm mtg an old friend for dinner. Sadly, I'll miss tonight.
-
A2 Added secret items into the game, if they want to take the time they can find them to alter their course. https://t.co/J2P0l6T4nz
-
It won’t be the same without you. Enjoy dinner and see you next week I hope.
-
interesting. maybe get something for the other grade based teachers to give if they connect that subject to the science.
-
- This helps tie things together, systematically.
-
You got it… It takes a village right?
-
A2: have philosopher wisdom badge that allows Ss to design their own side quest (once per unit) They love it. Good example of agency
-
oo, maybe some sort of "bridge" item, not sure what benefits it would give though
-
Maybe it could give a different bonus depending on what the subject it connected to… That would be awesome and thematic.
-
I just got this idea, special agent Items Ss get when they reach a level that can be used to unlock special missions
-
Loving the amazing ideas! Q3 coming in 2 minutes!
-
That is a perfect example of agency items or badges. Love this one by the way. Thanks for sharing Adam. https://t.co/lMm6zCMjGo
-
-
I just got this idea, special agent Items Ss get when they reach a level that can be used to unlock special missions
-
that reminds me of the book Ready Player One I just read puzzles embedded throughout a game to hunt for
-
The scare screens are the best! Watching them jump was hilarious today!
-
A2: You are all giving me some great ideas to add in next unit!
-
I'll be in and out, but glad I saw the chat pop up! My game is really linear. Side missions are only big choice right now
-
I will have to check that out! Sounds interesting! Thanks
-
I saw your tweet from earlier and that looked awesome. Would love to hear more about how you use this
-
definitely borrowing that one for next year
-
-
That is the whole point of chat… Useable ideas to help build engaging games and learning experiences for Ss https://t.co/pRixErpOU6
-
-
A2: You are all giving me some great ideas to add in next unit!
-
website/pages based game? Very cool idea of Easter eggs. Great story hook from earlier read too!
-
Using a WIX website makes it so easy to change things around daily. Never know where the surprises are!
-
Thanks! I did a board game before this but I think the website has a lot more options.
-
- Letting them create agency badges helps them set measurable and achievable goals.
-
My colleague uses WIX to design her science site. It is awesome. https://t.co/pMKikQuzaW

Using a WIX website makes it so easy to change things around daily. Never know where the surprises are!
-
Still want to know more about board game…
-
A3: I award XP to winners. Could roll dice: # x XP
-
A3 Use dice on the board game like a choose your adventure and find your path kind of thing.
-
A3: Roll Dice to see who gets 1st pick of special ing for challenges...like in today's quickfire challenge!
-
A3: Boss battles for damage and defence
-
A3: roll the dice for random XP or to see how many questions have to answer in class or HW
-
A3: Ss could get a chance item of some kid that has different success or adv. based on what they roll, maybe high risk high reward
-
A2 Give specific expectations or rubric and allow them to reach those goals visually-filling in chart, building a graph, etc.
-
oooh I want to know more!
-
A2 Ss have pathway-options to complete projects and always have opt to make own GBL for a unit. No special badges, but I should
-
Love it! It has changed so much for me and the Ss seem to really like it!
-
a3) roll to see if you get a cheat sheet for the tests, or how many pieces of the ripped cheat sheet you get. better chances w/ lvls
-
A3 Have Ss create their own game to go over class objectives that use dice to advance in game
-
A3: I have 6 teams in my class. 6 sided die could determine a lot. Brb, going to amazon
-
I need to check. Out wix because I use a google site and it is not easy to keep up to date
-
A3: One dice roll that they have to think if they wish to use as they lose the other power if poor roll. https://t.co/XxOA8PIKHB
-
I just love the genius of the community! Q4 coming in 2!
-

this is an interesting idea I like it a lot
-
Anyone interested in a GHO sometime this summer to go through game mechanics? I want help building/bettering my beta game
-
A3: This one helps other rolls by locking out a number that can’t hurt them if it is rolled. https://t.co/cii82enKbU
-
Roll the dice and that's how many questions you can ask the teacher during a quiz
-
-
A3 roll ability check for free hall pass. If fail, have to use "cloak of invisibility" no cloaks? Lose a participation pt
-
Super idea https://t.co/2mamCoOkmm

-
genius! I run my game with Google classroom and a Google site. Easy to build in secret pages and buttons
-
-
A4: The ability to become the Alpha raptor for a certain amount of time within a class period gives Ss more abilities.
-
I get so many ideas here it help keep my fire going, I am trying to get some co workers on board to join the crew
-
Of course, I think we will be doing that on as well this summer as that will be a high time for all aboard
-
Of course, I think we will be doing that on as well this summer as that will be a high time for all aboard
-
-
Are you or your co workers coming to this summer… Lots to learn there. Check it out.
-
-
A4: have the opportunity to use as many resources as possible to get an answer. Math, have a calculator on non-calculator
-
-
Joining in late, ! Robert King, Technology Integration Specialist, Louisville KY!
-
i like this, i have so many students who forget their calculator and want to use mine!
-
A4: Ss get to use the dishwasher for a day rather than washing by hand! Haven't tried this yet, but I think they would love it!
-
Robert, Glad to have you here joining in the fun. is a great community of teachers who are their class.
-
A4 If Ss show good character, they can advance to the next day and skip homework that night, or pick their own seat that day.
-
-
-
no need for HW if they’ve mastered the material, right? I LOVE it!
-
A4 still working on character type modifiers, but e.g. Rogue can "steal" help from friend
-
A5: very interested in this for new game. used cards in the past game they could play on each other, Ex: ruler for a day
-
A5: a Ss had this idea that they could build with items to get a vehicle to travel to different levels or worlds
-
A5 not yet, looking for ideas
-
-
Helping others and good character always gets Gold Points in my game. Gold Points can be turned in for candy https://t.co/vbrQjjOANp
-
-
A4 If Ss show good character, they can advance to the next day and skip homework that night, or pick their own seat that day.
-
A5: this is way beyond my game right now, excited to see some simple ways I can do this
-
what if they could have a card battle of some sort with in the game with summons of some sort
-
A5: I like this one… 20 BP x # of stars. Have 2 then each are worth 40 for total of 80. Ss love them https://t.co/QICjBkaD0M
-
thank goodness! Need to really talk through my ideas. Probably need to read again too
-
A5: Have a badge for each skill demonstrated within unit. If they get all get all of them...then special advantage...just an idea
-
Someone mentioned in past chat when mis-behave random Ss can raid their XP - I want to put this in action. No Ss misbehaves, though
-
that is super interesting…I’ve been playing a clans game that does that.
-
-
A5: just for fun, make each S in a group have a modifier (can’t talk, not allowed to write, must use pictures to explain thinking)
-
I like this battle cards idea that can be useful for boss battles
-
Hey everyone Drew from Iowa....sorry im late just got the kiddos to bed
-
Oh def. I’ve read it twice now. :)
-
A5: Thieves Training (TT), You can take an item from the pile of lost items. You roll 1 die, need to get # = to # of TT you have.
-
Love this idea and could tie a badge to each I can statement we put on final rubric.
-
I could so do this in science with the skills we want them up have
-
Speaking of games, my kids are trying to make the ball into this hat while I'm on this chat 😆 ALWAYS playing https://t.co/5msUxpChK2
-
A5 I think I'd like to do a science themed Magic the Gathering. Started going back through book for ideas this wk too :)
-
-
I can imagine its like shopkins and pokemon trading event together
-
Love idea. I am going to use this one… I think you should have something Physical to show this like a hat, glasses
-
This sounds like tons of fun! Would love to put that together!
-
Glad you are here tonight. Thanks for making it.
-
A6: We just started our adventure last week. Most students are 40 Gold D-bloons away from their first badge!
-
A6: We just started our adventure last week. Most students are 40 Gold D-bloons away from their first badge!
-
A6: made an evil alien who is threatening to freeze tectonic plates to drive our current unit
-
Love the idea… Many mechanics can be gained by looking at or playing games.
-
Ss dont know what the badge does yet but the name of it intrigues them....the eliminate of surprise keeps them engaged!
-
A6: My Adventure Quest w/current events awesome in bringing Ss determination & competition. Trying to figure its conclusion
-
Glad you are still reading I wrote it to be a living guide for all of us to help us build and create.
-
Our school alos just got a 3D printer so im in the process of having Ss design their own badges for their Island.
-
a6) told students an asteroid was going to hit earth, they put a lot of thought into which subjects we needed to investigate first.
-
A6 best example is how Ss pay to upgrade their avatar background, clothes, etc. CRAZY how they pay money for virtual items
-
Glad to hear that the game is afoot now…
-
A6: Ss often research on their own to find info and bring so much more into the game than I ever intend. Ex: types of dinosaurs.
-
A6: I needed a year ago b4 I moved from classroom Thinking tech integration and ’s digital badges as a start
-
That is soooo cool that you are using a 3D printer for Ss to design own badges. Very entrepreneurial
-
A6: my game the evil agency is a mystery and students earn clues as to who it is through games and assignments
-
A6:Love the excitement of revealing levels @ end of unit! Xtra incentive 4 MChefs is they get free cooking day while rest take test!
-
I was so surprised about how much they wanted items to add to their wardrobe!!
-
There's nothing better than hearing Ss in the hall"I almost have my first badge.""Did you get your assignment done sowe get extra XP?
-

A7 Start small and have fun with it! Ideas will build as you go!
-
As we have talk about is powerful, inclusive & intoxicating for both Ss and Ts… Once you start hard 2 stop
-
Fellow T did a Westward Ho! unit, exciting to hear 8th graders discussing their family and their wagon trip, in the hall
-
a7) a quote from a very wise woman "just keep swimming, just keep swimming..."
-
A7: Jump in head first, enjoy the ride, tweak as you go, learn with your Ss, and watch the magic happen
-
A7: Don't worry if it is not all planned from start to finish before you start - get started and see where the game takes you!
-
Q6-B allows you to make badges, too. It can be a collaborative effort and shared
-
I love hearing stories like this about students involved in in schools. Its is a game changer. https://t.co/Nms2wIA4eE

-
There's nothing better than hearing Ss in the hall"I almost have my first badge.""Did you get your assignment done sowe get extra XP?
-
A6 Ss like finding Easter eggs physical or digital for bonus XP & bragging but badges & items not sparking many explorers :-/ yet
-
A7: thinking tech integration guys, what are small steps my T’s can take to get S’s engaged with ? Small, meaningful steps!
-
A7: I was so scared to start mine bc I was worried I would mess it up. Then I realized I couldnt lol! Gotta take RISKS!
-
YES! Best advice! Follow it… https://t.co/SrjA3C73rI

A7 Start small and have fun with it! Ideas will build as you go!
-
A7: The most powerful pay off is having Ss run into the classroom and the time to fly by. Best book I ever read, stay with it!
-
Love how well that works with the theme of
-
A7: I love that my game is in beta testing, and Ss are willing to help me make changes. Far from perfect, but at least I'm doing it
-

-
A7: my game is very shallow, looking for simple ways this summer to take it a bit deeper with layers and build on items
-
A7 Most important part of gaming-be flexible, have fun and let kids take ownership of learning.
-
A7: as a somewhat new T to I would say go for it the Ss love it you will love planning and get excited take the jump
-
A7: as a somewhat new T to I would say go for it the Ss love it you will love planning and get excited take the jump
-
The game will take you places you never could have imagined. You must begin the journey in order to learn from it.
-
I feel that way too...no where near perfect and already finding mistakes/ways to make better but high engagement trumps
-
A7: YES!!! Student ownership is key! That's what keeps them engaged!

Sorry - something came up tonight. Will have to catch up reading it later

Me too. I was also scared to try mid year as well. I stared small with 1 quest & now wish I would have started sooner :)
-
play some games with them first for training. Once they see the tool, they'll use it. Try
-
Ready for Adventure Quest?! Rules coming in 2 minutes...stay tuned!
-
I don't have high engagement, but I do have buy-in from quite a few Ss
-
and I'd def be lost without book!! It is a game changer along with his spreadsheets! A must buy!
-
It will come. They will feed off of your excitement.
-
I do a yearly focus group with my Ss at lunch at end of year to make changes for next year. will be big focus this year
-
Thanks for the shout out… I am honored and humbled… community wouldn’t be the same without you. https://t.co/QWHEh97tpL

-
I'd love to see an example of your quest if you're willing to share!
-
buy in is key! :) Then it spreads especially when other Ss see peers cash in on the benefits & collect prizes/badges
-
Yes, the book helped me embed even more w/lots more levels & creative ideas 2engage Ss
-
A7 do you set aside planning time for ideas? I've been getting distracted by my content, guilty of always tweaking lessons
