We are talking about walk-throughs! Q1: What should the purpose be of an instructional walk-through? #admin2b
  • arts_to_admin Feb 11 @ 8:07 PM EST
Hi! David, music educator + aspiring admin, from SC. #admin2b
  • msmelindacooper Feb 11 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1: to provide both teachers and admin immediate and meaningful feedback about practices and strategies taking place (or not taking place) in a classroom #admin2b
  • Kroptavich Feb 11 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1: Instructional walkthroughs should have a singular focus, ideally predetermined by both administrator and teacher, as a means to collect data regarding a particular goal (ex. student engagement, teacher questioning techniques, etc.) #admin2b

A1: to support instructional strategies in the classroom that benefit all students. So providing feedback to teachers on positive things you see and suggestions or ideas to consider
  • epifer99 Feb 11 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1 self reflection, conversation w/ admin about teaching practices in your room #admin2b
  • arts_to_admin Feb 11 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: 1) To ensure teachers are fulfilling their instructional duties 2) To reinforce what they are doing well 3) To encourage them to grow #admin2b

  • Dixie_Principal Feb 11 @ 8:12 PM EST
I like the singular focus and agreed upon. #observeme is way teachers can ask for specific feedback. #admin2b

    #admin2b Q2: What makes a walk-through effective?
  • Kroptavich Feb 11 @ 8:13 PM EST
That reflection is a critical component for improvement. #admin2b

Encouragement to grow is huge. Can't stay stagnant. #admin2b

A2 honest conversation on both sides, helps when it isn't the only time the admin has been in your room all year, but time constraints and 800 other things sometimes make that inevitable #admin2b
  • arts_to_admin Feb 11 @ 8:15 PM EST
A lot of Kentucky people in here. I loved living there while I got my master's at EKU! #admin2b
  • Kroptavich Feb 11 @ 8:15 PM EST
Otherwise, the short observational experience becomes a bit diluted. It's impossible to fix anything by looking at everything all at once. #admin2b

  • Dixie_Principal Feb 11 @ 8:15 PM EST
A2: if the feedback given can help improve learning for all students. So being able to give specific strategies, tips to try can be helpful. #admin2b
  • msmelindacooper Feb 11 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2: Feedback that is meaningful and immediate. Ts should have a clear understanding of what they were doing well & way(s) they could improve before the next round of walk-throughs take place #admin2b
  • Dixie_Principal Feb 11 @ 8:17 PM EST
I like the conversation part. It truly needs to be a dialogue, not a one way conversation. Finding time is tough part, which is why we have forms to provide quick input. #admin2b

A2: meaningful conversation after the walk through. Feedback on what the administrator did see and a chance for the teacher to fill any gaps. #admin2b
  • Kroptavich Feb 11 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2: Walkthroughs are usually more effective when the teacher chooses the focus of the visit. #admin2b

#admin2b You guys are leading me into Q3: How should the walk-through tool be developed or chosen?
  • JPassItOn - Moderator Feb 11 @ 8:20 PM EST
A3: There are so many options out there, but I think the tool should be consistent with the mission and vision of the school. I think Ts have a chance to build this! #admin2b
  • msmelindacooper Feb 11 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3: A form that is not evaluative in nature—a form or document (maybe a shared Google doc) that allows for the collaborative piece of a walk-through process to take place. #admin2b
  • Dixie_Principal Feb 11 @ 8:23 PM EST
Teachers having voice is huge, but sometimes we are hamstrung by unions that we have to get district approval first. #admin2b

I like the collaboration part that could be done. Often times I offer suggestion a d then teacher responds to me that after I left room they did... and usually tied into my suggestion. In walkthroughs we only see glimpse so we need to be careful in feedback.#admin2b

A3: purely observational based on district, school or teacher goals. #admin2b
  • Kroptavich Feb 11 @ 8:25 PM EST
I think of a walkthrough as a brief observation (approx. 15 minutes). It can be announced or unannounced. If announced, that would give the admin and teacher a chance to have a brief conversation about the goal of the observation. #admin2b

And Q4: #admin2b What is one thing you remember about your most meaningful walk-through?
  • shollis0301 Feb 11 @ 8:29 PM EST
    Sherri Hollis instructional coach #Admin2B
  • Kroptavich Feb 11 @ 8:29 PM EST
A4: The best walkthroughs have included immediate feedback from my principal, either in person or via email. I want to know how it went asap. #admin2b

Thank you #admin2b for being here tonight to help us make walk-throughs more meaningful!
  • shollis0301 Feb 11 @ 8:32 PM EST
A3: I agree the form should be collaborative, without informative feedback, there is a void for growth.#Admin2B
