#UrbanEd chat is a twitter chat for educators. Topics relevant to the subject of urban education will be discussed, but all educators are encouraged to join the conversation. The chats will be moderated by Ben and Neil, founders of Engaging Educators and elementary school teachers in Detroit, MI.
A1: It's all I've ever wanted to do as long as I can remember. I truly believe all students deserve a quality public school education in their neighborhoods with teachers who love and believe in them! #UrbanEdChat
A1 in orderto play a role in making knowledge available to children in a fair and equitable manner. Also to have a positive impact in my community. #UrbanEdChat
A1 Worked with some student business groups when I was an accountant and wanted to give it a shot...one of the best decisions I've ever made #UrbanEdChat
A2: I'd have to say only a view times and I attributed it to Admin, but after reflection I realize maybe they were so busy or detached they had no clue. #UrbanEdChat
A2: I can say that I felt this way last school year and the year before. It was the admin who made everybody feel like they were replaceable when he shouldve been replaced! #UrbanEdChat
A2 Yes, I think we have all felt under valued at one point or another...I think campus climate has a ton to do with it...In my case, the campus climate was apprehensive instead of inclusive...the first yr teachers were on the outside looking in #UrbanEdChat
A2: as an administrator, i feel challenged because many seem to feel they know education because they attended school. The truth is they have no educational foundation #UrbanEdChat
A3. Pop culture shows this idea that teachers are dealing with first world problems when in reality teachers and admin face situations that are a matter of life or death. #UrbanEdChat
A3: I can't count how often I've seen teachers cast in such a negative light... Either they're mean, or stupid, or bickering with other teachers, or worse... It's rare to see a teacher cast in a good light...#UrbanEdChat
A3: Also, I can count on one hand the amount of good press about teachers in the everyday struggle... But let a teacher mess up, and we'll know their full name, where they teach, and what they had for lunch that day... #UrbanEdChat
A3-
Pop culture is rife with examples of the overbearing or doofus principal, the strict mean teacher, or the school that is more a prison. Or the one with hero educator fighting everyone.
I hate it. Devalues what happens in schools daily.
#urbanedchat
A1: I became a teacher by default I guess...I earned the certification in undergrad but swore I would never teach. It only took 3 months to change that. #UrbanEdChat
A3: The media jumps on Ts like white on rice when something bad happens. We have to take a bullet
or donate a kidney for the media to say something good about us. #UrbanEdChat
Will be on the front page and 5 o'clock news the same day...instead of working through issues, sometimes stakeholders create bigger ones.... #UrbanEdChat
All of the time. Those who can't, teach. Or the Don't be a teacher, you won't make any money. Even Scandal made snarky remarks about education last week. #urbanedchat
A4 By making effective teaching and learning our primary focus confidence can be restored. That focus has to incorporate fair and equitable access to education for ALL. #UrbanEdChat
A4. We must have a larger presence in the community, we must vote & run for local public office. We must share our concerns with non educators in the community. We must promote the educator brand! #urbanedchat
Media and pop culture look at education as a road block instead of a door to greater things. If you sing you can make it, if you play ball you can make it, if you YouTube you can make it, but non of these things talk about the importance of educating yourself 1st. #urbanedchat
A4 By doing our part to promote education as life-changing...And also not running away from its issues...it never hurt anyone to simply have a conversation...have the conversation...be the change! #UrbanEdChat
A4: We have to a stronger prescence in our communities and after our kids leave us. Hold your students accountability at all times. Be involved in the community beyond school hours. #UrbanEdChat
