Hey folks. George from Japan. I blog/vlog at https://t.co/HVCqyGmhNd and teach secondary English and Humanities. Happy to learn with you on a Sunday night! #hacklearning
My face-to-face PD during the week seems to be conflicting with my regular twitter chats. Still settling in, but loving it.
Glad to be here this morning
#HackLearning
Morning, #hacklearning. I'm Brian. I teach MS students English in CO. I'm seeing word 'engagement' pop up lots in tweets & at school. Probably worth unpacking what we mean because denotation is mixed, messy. I'm partial to, "condition of being in gear" -- cogs meshed & turning βοΈ
A1 found great success with @nearpod .. formative assessment with some direct instruction & immediate feedback ... in Title 1 - I have sts 2 min to get connected and/or buddy up! βΊοΈ #HackLearning
A1 For the past couple of years, @nearpod has been a favorite for interactive and immersive lessons with the #VR field trips, Ss also love to create their own #HackLearning
A1: I love @WeVideo , and have also found that kids like the variety of options on @brainpop (although there's not really a free version of that). #HackLearning
A1: I like the website https://t.co/cUn7H6H7MH. It allows parents and Ss to leave anonymous feedback or suggestions. It's great to see what they really think and use that to help drive instruction! #hacklearning
A1: Not necessarily tech but my teachers use Jack Hartmann videos with the younger kids and they LOVE it. One of my second grade teachers is also using @GoNoodle this year and itβs awesome! #HackLearning
Our class of littles loved using @Buncee to highlight/share their learning About earth materials ~ they were super engaged, lots of conv amongst the learners & the tool offers limitless ways to engage reluctant learners #HackLearning
A1 - I like programs like @peardeck because I can track engagement. I can see who is engaged and who is not. Ss love @flipgrid. I love the creativity that Ss show in their videos. I have seen S pretend they are spies or use accents to share their learning. #HackLearning
I observed a class in Detroit Public Schools where a teacher used QR codes around the room. Each linked to a short video or article. Students gathered info on their phones, then synthesized it all in collaborative groups. #HackLearning
A1 #hacklearning@mrshowell24 i'd agree with #gamification, we used to get a great response to those sort of tech activities, but they kinda went out of fashion
Recently paired Google Slides & @PearDeck to create amazing experiences for Ss that offered voice & choice in learning! #hacklearning Thanks to @jmattmiller for the suggestion!
A1 Very hard to pick one, my daily go tooβs are @Flipgrid@Buncee and @Seesaw. My newest interesting tech tool is @joinbubble a Twitter like tool for 13 and under. You can collaborate, have discussions, teach #DigiCit skills in the app #hacklearning
A1: Not necessarily tech but my teachers use Jack Hartmann videos with the younger kids and they LOVE it. One of my second grade teachers is also using @GoNoodle this year and itβs awesome! #HackLearning
The power of a game ... whether is is tech or a board game. I am not sure why we are not playing more games in school. I am pretty certain I learned to count playing Cribbage ... add/subtract playing Monopoly and other board games. #hacklearning
We are just barely scratching the surface of this in our school. The secondary schools in our district are further ahead then the elementary schools but really excited to dig in as I have used Google before. Canβt wait. #hacklearning
A1 Check out this amazing collection by experts that highlight proven literacy + #edtech strategies that engage struggling readers, writers, spellers. These help make learning meaningful via @iplante , @OGwithTLChttps://t.co/dCoQlaG5uw#hacklearning
A1 Boost engagement by building executive functions. Don't miss the very best list of free and low cost tools to support learners who find school difficult. Posted at #dyslexiacon18 last week by @KarenJanhttps://t.co/LXBvcRfVfs#hacklearning
A1 One of the most engaging things I've found for my third graders is @BrainPOP. The movies are entertaining for the kids. They enjoy using tools like make-a-map to create maps to show their understanding. Of course Pop-A-Joke in @AnnieAndMoby is also a hit! #hacklearning
I need to explore @nearpod more. Getting lots of ideas from responses. Like to βtry outβ and use before recommending. Tried @canva a couple times but did not stick with it. My job this week - explore! #HackLearning
A1 Last year we started using @gimkit which has really engaged Ss more and they enjoy the repetition it gives, have fun while playing and say they remember the content better #HackLearning
A1 Worthiest tech tool for engagement might be one learners select themselves to accomplish their purposes -- perhaps from a menu of suggestions with opportunity still to branch out beyond what's initially offered. #hacklearning

A1 We are lucky to teach in an age where so many engaging tech tools are literally in the hands of teachers and students. Most recently, my students seem to enjoy designing their own websites and creating memes/gifs. #HackLearning
A1b: Loving being creative & pushing students to create with unique ways with Google Slides - Choose Your Own Adventure - Non-Linear Presentations - Interactive Diagrams, etc #HackLearning
A1: There are also some great formative tools that can support engagement in the classroom. No a coincidence that this was somthing we shared last week with our staff: https://t.co/69O4XiPxWU#HackLearning
I just don't understand why so many teachers exhaust themselves trying to fight technology. Seems like a perfect opportunity to leverage some engagement and teach them how to use tech for learning. #HackLearning
No matter how much we love our tools, I think student engagement is more about students feeling ownership over their learning than whatever tool they use. #HackLearning
We played that on a bus 2 years ago, it was awesome that you can play anywhere, also when I have been out of school for conferences, can launch a game! #hacklearning
A1: One of my teachers also uses @PlayOsmo. She and her 1st graders love it. She recently downloaded another app for it. She is super excited to use it. #HackLearning
A2 I started using stations last year, small groups or paired activities, students become more comfortable talking within these groups and then build confidence throughout the year, become more active in discussions #HackLearning
A1: @classcraftgame has positively impacted my Ss behavior and engagement. It speaks their Fortnite language. It awards them with powers, skins, pets...It builds positive interdependence as theyβre on teams/squads. #HackLearning
A1 Worthiest tech tool for engagement might be one learners select themselves to accomplish their purposes -- perhaps from a menu of suggestions with opportunity still to branch out beyond what's initially offered. #hacklearning
A1 Students love to play the homework version of @quizizz β‘οΈ I make it a competition with my English 1 students each week. They love the competing against each other while learning! #HackLearning
Jumping in late - Myrna from Montana here. I recently stumbled onto Quizizz - I thought it was just like kahoot, but now I have kids begging me to let them do vocab quizes at home #hacklearning
I just don't understand why so many teachers exhaust themselves trying to fight technology. Seems like a perfect opportunity to leverage some engagement and teach them how to use tech for learning. #HackLearning
A2 There are some tools that students like to use that help them discuss more and feel more comfortable. @gosynth and @Flipgrid have worked very well for us #HackLearning
A2 This goes along with A1, but I recently had students do a digital @breakoutedu. I was surprised that by the Ss who broke out the quickest. One my quietest Ss worked by herself and was FAST. Engagement was through the roof on that day. #hacklearning
A2: quieter Ss benefit when learning can be shared asynchronously without time pressure and social pressure to say it perfectly on the first try. #hacklearning
A2: I have found that if I allow my quieter Ss to create their @flipgrid at home, they are more comfortable than when we create them at the spur of the moment at school. #hacklearning
A2 - Ask them questions...on paper.
I know this probably isn't the answer you want, but it proves engagement with material...if they haven't engaged, they cannot answer the questions.
#HackLearning
Tangent: @mcleod created a protocol that seems relevant to this chat about technology & engagement, reflective questions to ask to help us better leverage former in service of latter: https://t.co/NycGQ1xTvm#hacklearning
Coming soon... "Spark Tools" to be published by January 2019! EXCITING times for students & teachers for deeper learning & high engagement! #hacklearning
A2: Every morning we start our day with #EmergingEngineers. It is a sacred time dedicated to exploration, creativity, collaboration, & communication. It is a magical time. Teachers experienced it too! #HackLearning
A2 Last year, I hung white boards around the room so my students could get up & write answers on board for participation & feedback ... @nearpod also allows people to insert formative assessment opportunities #HackLearning
In discussions using back channels for kids to chime in who often donβt, when Ts create a context for content to come alive as in PBL, Maker work, choice strategies, less T talk more learner talk #hacklearning
A2 Another strategy that I like for quiet students is an online discussion board. Ss can respond to T questions and S responses. They can take their time in formulating their response. I have used Google Classroom and @padlet#hacklearning
A2 My quietest Students love sharing their ideas, thinking and Presentations in @Flipgrid provided they have a private place to record. Flipgrid Voice Pod #hacklearning
A2: Choices, time, and modeling! The quiet Ss with whom I work usually need a bit of a run-up before actively participating. They often start slowly and more closed off, but after seeing others perform a task or performing a task in a smaller setting they open up. #HackLearning
Makes sense. From that same book, I carry around Harriet Rubin's quote in my head: "Power is about what you can control. Freedom is about what you can unleash." #hacklearning
I agree, we need a mix, engagement looks different in our classrooms, tech is not always the answer, must be with purpose and paper gives purpose too :) #hacklearning
So important particularly when most Ts tend to be extroverts and that can overwhelm Ss who are quieter and express their learning differently! #HackLearning
It is important to note that #edtech is a resource. Yes it can increase the desired high levels of student engagement, but just like any resource it requires effective planning, instruction, and reflection. #HackLearning
A2 - I think using questioning to draw out thoughts of students #hacklearning - Increasing Critical Thinking Skills in Education https://t.co/mJz6RTGmTd
A2: Digital tools like @PearDeck and @padlet are one obvious way to engage all students. I also like some nondigital strategies. For example, Give 1 Get 1, Pass the Note or small Group Collaboration in #HyperDocs#HackLearning
Ok #HackLearning - gotta go do the mom thing! Looking forward to checking out answers for the rest of the chat! Be sure to follow one another! I followed several awesome people - yay!π
A2: quieter Ss benefit when learning can be shared asynchronously without time pressure and social pressure to say it perfectly on the first try. #hacklearning
A2 Our district PD is Using @padlet so we can share thoughts/ideas as we shift our grading practices. Nice way for all to see when not in the same rooms. #HackLearning
A2: When I add a @Flipgrid I have found student who donβt talk in class will say their piece. And of course an opportunity to write it out on a @OneNoteEDU#HackLearning
A2: I love tech & all the sharing...Sometimes quieter students need smaller groups to feel comfortable with embedded structure...Hattie shares the Placemate Activity in Visible Learning #HackLearning
#hacklearning@timWolffSSD We take the approach that tech is just another resource. Some kids respond well to it, others respond to more traditional media
With @gimkit KitCollab, students can create their own questions and then play a live learning game using these student-generated questions. Itβs like Kahoot on steroids! #HackLearning
So important particularly when most Ts tend to be extroverts and that can overwhelm Ss who are quieter and express their learning differently! #HackLearning
A2: I also used my #GoogleClassroom to build some social structures that engaged my kids who struggled more socially. I had a "community" classroom - tell a joke, post a favorite meme, etc. #HackLearning
π hi always delighted to share π Weβve got a fab πππ community whoβve been using us in beta. Doors are now open to all schools to register for free ahead of our exciting new site going live in 2 weeks #hacklearning#digcit

A2: Anything that involves independently working with music, art, or video. Also, the opportunity to participate anonymously (like with Kahoot). I'm a fan of Quiet Revolution and believe in supporting introverted students. #hacklearning
A2: I don't find quieter Ss necessarily need to increase their engagement. Choice of tools, choice of products, choice of topics and activities like paired reading encourage them to share their thoughts and understandings. #HackLearning
A2 To increase engagement in quieter students, let's not overlook value of quiet(er), one-on-one, at-the-elbow chats, whether teacher-student or student-student. Also: time to write to think, not just talk to think. Combine the 2, too: write before/after talking. #hacklearning
A3: Get out of the way. Let them lead.
(Sounds simple, but teachers are so used to leading, that one of the hardest things is stepping back!)
#HackLearning
#this Quiet does not mean not engaged! When I ask my students at the beginning of the year what they wish I would know, so many say this! #HackLearning
A3: Establish a "risk-taking" learning environment for Ss to step out & lead through a project/lesson...
Most students are more willing to "take the lead" if you can tap into their specific interests & strengths and encourage them to extend their passion #hacklearning
A3: Vary your instructional delivery, strategies, and opportunities. Differentiation is key. Using the same tool or strategy every day is not appropriate. Seek to give every child the most appropriate platform choices and opportunities to share their learning. #hacklearning
A2 I keep adding to my answers. I also think that @peardeck is a great #edtech that allows ALL Ss to have a voice in the classroom. Not just the S who raises their hand or who is picked by the calling stick. #hacklearning
A3: Let them work on real world solutions to real world problems. I love seeing what everyone is doing with #SDGs. When kids connect to a passion or a cause, leaders will rise. #HackLearning
A3 giving students roles / responsibilities in the classroom helps them develop leadership skills - how to work and lead peers ... if we want them to be leaders, we have to give them time and people to lead #HackLearning
I find the same thing. They donβt have to create their @Flipgrid right in the MakerSpace unless they want to but itβs usually too noisy anyway! #hacklearning
I think thatβs great. If a resource is getting 100% student engagement run with it! If some like it set up for centers with some using tech and some traditional. My teachers are beginning to use more tech and are improving daily. #HackLearning
A2: #sketchnotes plus think, pair, share work well. A fun whole class circle writing where T gives who/what/where (or class votes), T says start, times for a minute or so, says pass, and Ss pass to R or L & repeat gets every S engaged. #hacklearning
A3 Project Based Learning builds student leadership skills. Just working in teams/groups definitely helps building skills. Having jobs assigned within the group holds everyone accountable for their part #hacklearning
A3: when they are given choice and become βexpertsβ in their topic, they can then lead the discussion and begin to see themselves capable of leading. #HackLearning
A3: If a teacher can touch a student's heart or tap into a student's passion, the student will be moved, and their ability to lead will emerge. #HackLearning
Making engagement part of the community agreement and unpacking what it looks/sounds/feels like is a powerful practice that becomes essential to the classroom culture #hacklearning
I wonder if this could expand to the the school level ... if we give sts leadership responsibilities at the school level we might have more pride & ownership in our schools #HackLearning
So important particularly when most Ts tend to be extroverts and that can overwhelm Ss who are quieter and express their learning differently! #HackLearning
A3: Many teachers at my school use a Google Form as a bell ringer. They ask about 3 questions that help establish what Ss know. Can help with grouping, feedback, and developing S leaders. #HackLearning
A1- I really enjoy the @classcraftgame for engaging students! Each students creates a character and build it through the year by earning XP on class work #HackLearning
A3: Let Ss create the experience.
This year my classes practice a skill whole-class, then break into smaller βbook clubsβ to practice the skill on a different medium, then Ss design a final assessment in which they demonstrate mastery of the skills and objectives. #HackLearning
The thing about #HackLearning that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
With choice comes voice. Different tools offer different ways to empower different students! And with technology even the quietest student has a voice. #hacklearning
Leadership often comes when kids engage in interests they care about - find leaders everywhere when we offer opportunities that elevate different voices, build agency by shifting power 2 kids in their learning, provide paths 4 them to influence class, sch, community #hacklearning
A3: Some leadership (social) skills need to be explicitly taught or acknowledged. Listening, sharing your ideas, even some structures! But then we need to give time to practice & apply. Also, elevating different kinds of leadership. #HackLearning
A3: Center based in small groups with the teacher facilitating the lesson. One of my teachers did a great job with this last week. Crushed it. His questioning strategies encouraged the students to take leadership positions and have fun. It was awesome. #HackLearning
A3 ss leadership needs to be a part of the culture of the building - where all stakeholder model the expectations. I believe the "badges" model from girl/boy scouts can be something schools can emulate #HackLearning
A3: I think it starts with student ownership and student choice. When students own the learning they are often very motivated to take leadership roles in their groups or in the classroom. #HackLearning
Weβre trying a hybrid @breakoutEDU this week. Teacher found a digital he likes but still wants to give them the lock experience so there is a clue at the end added that leads to one key and lock. #hacklearning
In reply to
@WorldStudies7KB, @breakoutEDU, @breakoutEDU
A2- for my quieter students I sometimes do a quick poll in class that requires a thumbs up or down...that way I can quickly assess and they do not need to talk in front of the class...also for presentations kids can record themselves #HackLearning
A3 ask kids of all ages to share what matters to them, whatβs interesting to them, what are they curious about, what are their questions - use that to create a context for learning and leading #hacklearning
A3 When Ss ask if they can have an after school club (movies, dungeons & dragons) I give them a space, but tell them they're in charge. It's amazing to see what they're able to do. #hacklearning
A3-being really intentional in group work and trying on different roles is powerful work to lift all Ss into various leadership roles and encourage equity of voice https://t.co/TRidyjF6VH#hacklearning
A3 Ss love having choice and opportunities to be experts. I also forget that S need to be taught how to be leaders. During my @breakoutEDU lesson, I was surprised how few "groups" actually worked together No clear leader and didn't know how to collaborate #hacklearning
I like to think of myself as a life-long learner and creating is part of my learning process. I figure that if I am creating it I might as well share it. #HackLearning
Join #HackLearning chat Nov 4 at 8:30-9:00am EDT when one of our very own authors, Joe Sanfelippo @Joe_Sanfelippo will be guest moderator leading chat on the "hacky" topic of Being Intentional.
Agreed. Do you think the teacher needs to have a solid base of classroom management, positive relationships, and trust for this to be most effective? #HackLearning
We were doing #pbl last year and students were learning about #TeachSDGs and collab with peers from Argentina and Spain, great learning experience #hacklearning
A3: Voice, choice, and providing authentic topics and problems that they WANT to solve. Giving students the opportunity to choose their roles - not all want to lead, some are happy following (and we all know the best leaders are those who know how to follow). #hacklearning
A3 To foster student leadership, ask them to do more than follow recipes as driver for their learning. #hacklearning (See compelling words below from @chrislehmann via @spencerideas.)
