Welcome to ! and I welcome you to our Crew as we prepare to discuss why "Pedagogy Matters". Let's mingle until Q1!
Rik in MA, Facilitator of Learning with a Math content and inspired for the opportunity to lead with tonight!
Dave H from NBPT and Malden hoping to see a huge crew come out tonight for . So grateful for partner
Hi Rik. Looking forward to the
Thrilled to see your smiling face!
Been a great month in Eastern mass with and and with and team. Now...

"Pedagogy Matters"
Like this tweet if you're new to so we can welcome you to your Crew.
Phone charging... time for - SR severe SPED middle school teacher.
Talk to me about . Highlights?
Honored to have you join our Crew tonight! https://t.co/7P5GwaAhaE
Phone charging... time for - SR severe SPED middle school teacher.
Does it have a recap doc, with links to lessons, etc?
I both remembered to put it on the calendar and managed to stay awake!
For me the greatest highlight was that the room was filled with invested educators--awesome!
Now that's an accomplishment! https://t.co/du0dUs38D2
I both remembered to put it on the calendar and managed to stay awake!
Q1 - There seems to be more focus on assessment and curriculum. How might we include more of an emphasis on sound ?
I think this graphic would melt my Ts brains. It's a lot.
A1 - Pierre Pirard's TED Talk said we need to "Plan Purposefully" to be more pedagogically sound. https://t.co/8zHdHXGaMh
Highlight for me was Ts recognizing that to reach all we have do things differently to target specific learners
I think it might be a good idea to talk w/colleagues about what works now, what we want to work better pedagogically.
BAM!! https://t.co/72zHdwGeWK
I think it might be a good idea to talk w/colleagues about what works now, what we want to work better pedagogically.
A1 - To be more sound, I'd like to see more learning co-designed with our Learners to create more relevance.
RT Q1 - There seems to be more focus on assessment and curriculum. How might we include more of an emphasis on sound ?
I look forward to watching this, thanks for the share.
This week, our sped team is talking about creating to goals instead of modifiying from generic assignments
This is very important, and has a developmental curve too.
I like this a lot and it pertains to an issue a parent raised tonight, good timing.
A1. The schools that work from a single pedagogy are the ones that scare me. One size fits none.
Imagine how Learners would interact when they are asked to help design our learning? https://t.co/z27fk1P1SR
This is very important, and has a developmental curve too.
Say it LOUDER! https://t.co/vinp88Rsrb
A1. The schools that work from a single pedagogy are the ones that scare me. One size fits none.
I've done this from time to time and this really encourages greater investment. https://t.co/OT9ogtcFSZ

tonight is the power of positivity, is on pedagogy. Choices!
A1 We tend to talk about Curriculum (standards, objective, outcomes) and assess bc they're easier to see and touch. Pedagogy = art
I'd like to think Pedagogy = art/science
Sounds like a night to try double dipping! https://t.co/z5nwMEGs1x
tonight is the power of positivity, is on pedagogy. Choices!
We in sped need better middle ground btw building from current/developmental skills & modifying grade standards
I'll absolutely agree. was trying to say "more art" in pedagogy than outcomes other aspects.
Yes, how does pedagogy support positivity, and we know that positivity supports optimal learning.
I'm lurking in too. So many good chats tonight!
Positivity, Encouragement, and Empowerment IGNITES Learning based on well-planned . https://t.co/LOTOwQW43q
Yes, how does pedagogy support positivity, and we know that positivity supports optimal learning.
Q2 - What is at the root of great ? What transforms teaching into something that’s pedagogically sound?
Agree--many forget "art" in pedagogy,it does need to be emphasized. Choreography as part of pedagogy.
Can keep grade-level in mind as aspirations but priorities have to be teaching to and assessing IEP goals.
A2 - When we focus more on the with our Learners and the relationships with the content, learning will IGNITE!
A2 Reflection is a key ingredient--reflection/visualization have empowered my lessons.
Gotta love those between chat field trips! !
My favorite part of lesson planning was always the hooks. How am i going to draw them in excite Ss?
How do we encourage more educators to learn from the benefits of reflection? https://t.co/eJQDegunOw
A2 Reflection is a key ingredient--reflection/visualization have empowered my lessons.
RT Q2 - What is at the root of great ? What transforms teaching into something that’s pedagogically sound?
Agree, relationships is critical component w/regard to good pedagogy.
Learners, Teachers, Admins, Parents and Content relating...MAGIC!! https://t.co/VwC9HyByiG
Agree, relationships is critical component w/regard to good pedagogy.
A2 Solid pedagogy rests on knowing Ss. Where r they & what inspires them 2 push forward? Pedagogy can happen outside class time?
Agreed, but how we frame those goals? For many of my Ss means getting them out of "eternal preschool" of 80s sped
Yes,I've read it's important to create conflict-to surprise, present opposing concepts, awaken brain, connect.
A2 something that couldn't have happened until u switched 2a growth mindset& allows 4 & to transcend 4 walls
True, in this respects it happens throughout school day and even afterwards when Ss email.
Thank you Rachel! https://t.co/fn3hUZZLUx
A2 something that couldn't have happened until u switched 2a growth mindset& allows 4 & to transcend 4 walls
saw that you RT the Q, so thought I'd chime in.
Just pondering why we hear so little about ...
I used to loathe administrators who insisted that "outcomes" be put on the board. I like the surprise.
"Life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness" is cornerstone of democracy, and schools are pathways to democracy.
Our Learners benefit from surprises, spontaneity, and innovation! https://t.co/s7Lhe6TKUB
I used to loathe administrators who insisted that "outcomes" be put on the board. I like the surprise.
Q3 - Describe what meaningful looks like to educators and to their Learners.
A2: Connecting with students and also being that teacher who continues to be an ongoing, spirited learner...
Sometimes I do list outcomes or goals, and sometimes not--depends on focus of lesson.
I'd make inspiring happiness part of our pedagogical goals. Curriculum, though? Maybe in psychology way
YOU make it happen! https://t.co/dRY96DJje4
A2: Connecting with students and also being that teacher who continues to be an ongoing, spirited learner...
Use lots of different pedagogy dependent on multiple factors.
A3 - Meaningful creates learning that makes sense, has meaning and relevance. Grant Wiggins taught me this.
Maybe b/c it tends to be less clear than what curriculum/assessments are being used?
And we know the YOU becomes WE--KAPOW!
It's almost like is a black-hole that goes undeveloped... https://t.co/EygLVcuYb8
Maybe b/c it tends to be less clear than what curriculum/assessments are being used?
RT Q3 - Describe what meaningful looks like to educators and to their Learners.
We get caught up in trends like "cooperative learning" or "technology infused" and forget to have purpose
A3 Great pedagogy means students learn in spite of themselves. They don't even realize they're learning!
just enjoying the synergy between and . Pedagogy goes a lot deeper than happiness IMHO etc
I find many Ts describe their pedagogy as "eclectic" as a euphemism for "inconsistent"
Maybe is to have real PURPOSE...? https://t.co/t6xi6nFdyy
We get caught up in trends like "cooperative learning" or "technology infused" and forget to have purpose
I'm ok with "inconsisten." it's "random" that bothers me.
Well... https://t.co/ekQOY9DA3z
I find many Ts describe their pedagogy as "eclectic" as a euphemism for "inconsistent"
And seat-of-your-pants is worse...
I try to connect to real life or future life often.
While we're hear talking pedagogy, I have to shout out a favorite blog writer and podcast creator,
A3 for me it always comes back to frequent checks for understanding On some level what else is there?
Typically include visuals, music, stories.
So what does "purpose" look like? Making the so-called trends--meaningful--so they're not just trends!
My struggle is in an Era of constant change, the ability to hold quality pedegogy, mentor it is difficult w. Constant curr. Chg.
I looked that blog up--wonderful!
Formative Assessments (FAs) https://t.co/ur3VxsIsMg
A3 for me it always comes back to frequent checks for understanding On some level what else is there?
Why deliver these lessons in this way on this day for these students? That's purpose
Well-said, Tara! This is why we have and a great PLN to support us. https://t.co/rrsn7qqYLK
My struggle is in an Era of constant change, the ability to hold quality pedegogy, mentor it is difficult w. Constant curr. Chg.
"Purpose" depends on what's being taught--elem. math provide foundation for math related work/decisions.
Q4 - For teachers to improve , do they need PD, support from Admins, time with other teachers, or what?
I wonder if choices for some r result of survival, not mindfulness. I always want to model mindfulness
Do you think that's because in prep programs it's framed too much as citing the research base, which scares people off?
Another BAM!! from https://t.co/VQ46I2o0Dz
Why deliver these lessons in this way on this day for these students? That's purpose
A4 - For teachers to improve , we need to first be open to the need to improve, why, and then search for the how.
Yes. When we pack classes and mandates and protocols, Ts end up with too much triage and not enough mindfulness
Maybe theory is too far removed from actual practice? https://t.co/za5VoJjLM7
Do you think that's because in prep programs it's framed too much as citing the research base, which scares people off?
a4 all! I also think time to observe eachother. We have gold all around us we need to just open the doors… https://t.co/xrvOAiVh63
Q4 - For teachers to improve , do they need PD, support from Admins, time with other teachers, or what?
RT Q4 - For teachers to improve , do they need PD, support from Admins, time with other teachers, or what?
A4 Colleague circle model could be powerful w/regard to developing successful pedagogy amongst educators.
Effective PD is great! Educators need to know what PD is needed and why. Not just PD for PD.
A4 Conversations with colleagues is always helpful, but open minds and flexibility is the biggest requirement.
We started learning walks with Ts going to diff grade levels. It's been interesting. Game changing
https://t.co/iqHpgtREyO
A4 Colleague circle model could be powerful w/regard to developing successful pedagogy amongst educators.
A4: Time with other colleagues is important... teaching can be isolating.
I've seen Ts get influenced, even if they deny it.
I think that cognitive science and research should inform pedagogy.
Kevin, thrilled and honored to see you joining our Crew tonight!
A4. Have to want to understand why and not just how/what's cool/easy. I don't know how to promote desire to understand.
Trifecta, perhaps? Pd, expectation, willingness to try new ideas or tweek old? Thoughts
We scheduled it out for the year. Made it a non-negotiable. Included observation and reflection sheets.
Ha, I've ∗influenced∗ colleagues and had them deny it.
Agreed. It takes consistent effort, time, and reflective practice. https://t.co/pSsGael5Vv
I think that cognitive science and research should inform pedagogy.
Yet it has to be done in rich ways so we thoughtfully use what we learn to build practice.
True, I visited 6th grade math classes last week--many good ideas.
and it has to be current. When I have Ts citing research from the 60s that's been disproved since...
Nodding. We may need to revisit useful and proven theory.
Current and Learner-centered is crucial for learning... https://t.co/AJ3mOKXTzb
and it has to be current. When I have Ts citing research from the 60s that's been disproved since...
We need ways to respectfully help one another w/this--what do you suggest?
Only 20 minutes left in ... what?
HUGE! Wow Maureen! https://t.co/dGuJbpjBIr
We need ways to respectfully help one another w/this--what do you suggest?
My question is often about how to convince Ts who aren't that they have to adapt. What creates the urgency Ss need?
Q5 - Is there “best practice” with ? If so, why aren’t more people on board? Are Ts reading the research on this?
Might teachers observing other teachers be a good place to start? I'd love to. https://t.co/dGuJbpjBIr
We need ways to respectfully help one another w/this--what do you suggest?
LOUDER... https://t.co/DKjM9jSqxL
My question is often about how to convince Ts who aren't that they have to adapt. What creates the urgency Ss need?
A5 - The "Best Practice" I look at include Understanding by Design (UBD) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
I LOATHE the term "best practice". Speaks to a one-size-fits-all mentality. Best practices in my classroom may not be in yours
We're finding that it'll have to happen a lot over time before shift comes where we need it.
RT Q5 - Is there “best practice” with ? If so, why aren’t more people on board? Are Ts reading the research on this?
I think that joint programs and goals can support this change.
We need to made purposeful a must-have for ALL our Learners...NOW! https://t.co/tDyzIuntN6
We're finding that it'll have to happen a lot over time before shift comes where we need it.
A5 I think there are many good practices in this regard.
seen schools keep articles on school server or do email blasts... still hast be a better way.
I agree that there are many ways to do it well, Kevin.
A5: Many PD opportunities happen, follow ups not so much; we reteach kiddos and Ts need it too
I read and tried to use Teach like a Champion as PD. Packed with grt pedagogy ideas. Tough sell, though.
Maybe Peer opportunities to share best practices with student outcomes and success examples? Chance for a 4 on the eval rubric?
If there could only be more sharing! Enter with The Teacher Collaborative!
I, for one, don't mind when a teacher respectfully talks to me and informs me about changes.
I wonder what are the pedagogical theories people find non useful or feel are unproven? Is it really a coping mechanism?
How do we encourage teachers to be more reflective during and after PD? https://t.co/xMCCjJM0na
A5: Many PD opportunities happen, follow ups not so much; we reteach kiddos and Ts need it too
Agreed--but at the same time if we define "best" as a personal experience--as you suggest--then OK!
A5. I think there are best practiceS, but I'm back where I started this chat: one size fits none.
Agreed. Better to have an arsenal of effective practices than search for one "best".
There could be engaging signage in school that reminds people of most important updates in pedagogy.
Start PD with T's talking abt goals, formative, pedagogy, formative cycle. Doesn't have 2b perfect. It's process
When parents + teachers want to dismiss SBG they often refer to it as "theory". Are their current practices more sound?
I think the purposeful is too far removed from most busy teachers... https://t.co/sJbirfPLzK
I wonder what are the pedagogical theories people find non useful or feel are unproven? Is it really a coping mechanism?
from https://t.co/oQTHaMHtPQ
I’m working on making learning walks happen more often at my current sites. Too bad silo culture is still the norm.
I also like shared projects/goals--we learn a lot about and from one another when this happens.
So true! Interdisciplinary Planning is required is very beneficial. Still too many silos. https://t.co/P6AUXl9v0q
I also like shared projects/goals--we learn a lot about and from one another when this happens.
how to reach the Ts who need it most? The ones that can barely access email, let alone other tech tools?
Q6 - At what point do school culture and come together?
Stunning Question... https://t.co/oqFD0tzjAM
how to reach the Ts who need it most? The ones that can barely access email, let alone other tech tools?
Also when we write our team newsletter each week, we actually teach each other about pedagogy/practice.
Teachers teaching Teachers is AWESOME PD! https://t.co/z1bd4EiWUA
Also when we write our team newsletter each week, we actually teach each other about pedagogy/practice.
A6 - When schools put of Staff, Learners, and Content at the center of Learning, then Culture and meet!
First have to see if it's can't change or won't. We can't accept stagnation.
How do we "encourage" buy-in? https://t.co/1yQKFNt6cD
First have to see if it's can't change or won't. We can't accept stagnation.
A6 - The ultimate goal. To be able to walk through the halls and see a unified experience for Ss
RT Q6 - At what point do school culture and come together?
Love this!! https://t.co/hM4hdVIdfR
A6 - The ultimate goal. To be able to walk through the halls and see a unified experience for Ss
I also see the reflective component as crucial! https://t.co/M2Escd0CTh
PD with focus on D, its ongoing not a one day show. Like kids, Ts should have year long plans with support
We are prompting Ts to put "observeme" signed on their doors. Starting to see them more and more.
The few ‘movers’ might be enough to ignite change. Why Ts need to watch each other teach.
Effective PD comes in various flavors...fortunately! https://t.co/DDMRdN0DGr
but can't quality ped. exist without being reliant on technology? easier with text but is not my core
absolutely, I was talking about access to/sharing/deseminating current research information
We have urgency meetings around data. When Ts succeed, others ask how
I watched a colleague teach a grade level different than her usual yesterday. 5 min in, learned something and used it today.
I'd like to see "urgency meetings" around Engaged Learning since our Learners are for it! https://t.co/zZHgVibXVj
We have urgency meetings around data. When Ts succeed, others ask how
check out for some real bold souls letting that sunlight ☀️stream in!
Tell me more about "urgency meetings"
Ours are very much like this. Simpler even.
I'd just like to see more "urgency" over getting Engaged Learning to ALL our Learners since so many are bored now.
HUGE thanks to for your contributions tonight in !!
When are you coming down the street? DESE with us all week for reviews, but nothing fun.
At elem, it's very active. I don't notice much boredom
A to for his Leadership with our each week!
Yes Thank You Dave and Rik. Great Started me thinking more about pedagogy.
We are always trying to show 5-8 what K4 looks like. It's often more alive. Vigor instead of rigor
I witness daily walking the High School hallways with kids on devices (not learning). https://t.co/wmnZ7Bhrm1
At elem, it's very active. I don't notice much boredom
just waiting for the invite! Let's get something on the books
Thanks to and everyone else on for helping me keep fresh and optimistic. Follow those you've met tonight
