Q1 - The #TeachBetter mindset is the relentless pursuit of “Better” in your teaching, your classroom, your school, or your district. What does “Better” mean to you as a teacher?
A1 Better means that I'm always willing and wanting to grow. I take the time to celebrate what's right, but reflect on what I could have changed. I share that with my students and try to hold them to that as well. #MasteryChat
I agree! I just hate when it gets slow on me, which has been frequently most recently. That could be my connection, though. In any case, it helps to organize all the chats! #masterychat

Having a growth mindset as a teacher is just as important as our students having a growth mindset!
If you aren't failing at some point, you are pushing yourself to grow! #Masterychat
One you know better, you do better! Do your biological children deserve a teacher on their A game everyday? If you said yes, you need to make sure you are doing that for everyone else's children. They are counting on us! #masterychat
A1. Always tying NEW and seeking best practices for my students. I've been trying a lot of blended learning practices in my class this year to individualize learning, in addition to trying the in-class flip. #masterychat

A1: Better to me is a mindset. I don’t want to come in and do the same thing without having a why. And if I don’t have a why, I shouls@br doing something diff. I want to improve. I ask joe I can improve. I set goals, make a plan, celebrate (and brag) and repeat! #MasteryChat

A1: 'Better' sometimes means different - doing things differently than you've ever tried before; risk-taking; listening to children's ideas & acting on them; being the type of learner that you've hoping your students will become. #TeachBetter#masterychat
I never really know, especially since my internet as a whole has been acting up as well. However, Tweetdeck is the site that's the slowest for me. #masterychat

I am HONORED to count myself amongst this group of educators who understand and truly embody the #teachbetter mindset in their careers. The energy is tangible right now! #masterychat
#masterychat A1 We must realize we are ALL humans and will all fall short of perfection. "Better" to me means I am teaching my Ss the attributes of LOVE JOY PEACE KINDNESS GOODNESS and GENTLENESS though my actions and words. IMO, this is the greatest thing Trs do.
A2) An excuse I hear often and won’t let control me or my students is blaming things on others. I think it needs to be a focus on how you can get better and not what others “did but really didn’t make you do” #MasteryChat
Q2 -The biggest enemies of the #TeachBetter mindset are excuses and focusing on problems. We must ALWAYS be solution focused & pursue what we can change to improve our practice as Ts. BE HONEST...What is 1 EXCUSE you won’t let stop you from being “Better” this week? #masterychat

A2- One excuse that I will not let stop me this week is "I don't have enough time" and also being tired...one week until spring break here in Jersey even though we had 12 inches of snow today!! #MasteryChat
A2 - "Time" is the biggest excuse I find for both myself and many teachers. We need to get creative, find ways to overcome, and be more realistic about the amazing things we CAN accomplish with the time we DO have. #teachbetter#masterychat
@mr_middle_2 I love your passion for seeking better opportunities for your students. This is essential to continue our #Teachbetter Mindset #Masterychat

Dan, YES! This is a huge excuse a lot of people use. The hardest part is that is universally and mostly true. The key is finding ways to use the time we have "better". #masterychat
A2: The most destructive excuse in the field of education is "students cannot handle the content". When teachers set high expectations, students meet them. #MasteryChat
A2: "There isn't enough time." I will work to be productive with the time (even though the week was shortened with snow) to leave a meaningful impact on my students before we head into Spring Break! #masterychat@ERobbPrincipal@KGT_Educator@misskoplin
Roman from Ontario, Canada. HS Teacher/Student Success Leader/Agent of Transformation. Checking in late, was reasing bedtime story with my daughter. #MasteryChat
A2: If the excuse can be articulated, then it already exists and can be a temptation to apply. Key is never having the excuse exist in the first place. #MasteryChat
A1: #TeachBetter means knowing better and doing better. It is constantly learning how to engage, educate and build students who want to learn. #MasteryChat
A2. I won't let my inexperience scare me! I often worry my "newbie-ness" will prevent things from working. When things go poorly, I have to reflect and grow – but that won't happen if I don't try new things! I'm a student teacher, I need to challenge myself. #MasteryChat
Yes! I love that my students have awesome dynamic digital products to take away instead of the stereotypical SS projects from years past. Need to keep it interesting! Make SS class a makerspace as well! #masterychat
A2. I would say “ I’m so limited on time excuse- also feeling like I’m getting sick so need to care for myself before Monday but won’t let that excuse stop ✋ 🛑 me;) #Masterychat
A2 Fatigue. This time of year is rushed, chaotic, and everyone (Ts and Ss alike) has spring fever. We are all worn out. I won't let my tiredness be my excuse. Focus on getting the rest I need and being awesome for my students are the goals of the next 7 days. #masterychat
A2...GOOD and self-reflective question! My excuse that I won't let stop my group and I is the focus on where we WERE to look how far we've grown!! #TeachBetter#MasteryChat#WatchUsNow#ProudTeacher
A2 - "Time" is the biggest excuse I find for both myself and many teachers. We need to get creative, find ways to overcome, and be more realistic about the amazing things we CAN accomplish with the time we DO have. #teachbetter#masterychat
A2 #masterychat Trying not to let myself get caught up with "parents should be..." We can only control the environment we provide for our students and in turn the amount of growth they can achieve! Blaming parents/home is not the answer.
A2.2: "Why can't we just do a Powerpoint?" Answer: "Powerpoints are lame, boring, and lack creativity. Plus deep down, you know that you hate them." #masterychat
A2 The biggest excuse I will not use is “I don’t have the time”. I will shift my schedule to make time for more reflective writing. So many things happen on a daily basis, but isnis important to have sometime set aside for ourselves. #masterychat

A2b) “well this is how we’ve always done it”. That never works, students, personalities, experiences change every year. How can you adapt to make the most out of experiences?? #MasteryChat
A2.2: "Why can't we just do a Powerpoint?" Answer: "Powerpoints are lame, boring, and lack creativity. Plus deep down, you know that you hate them." #masterychat
A1: This is a question right here @chadostrowski holy cow! Never EVER going to use the excuse that "this" kid can't learn because of... they will learn & grow when they feel accepted & we work together. #MasteryChat
A2 The kids will not be on board is one excuse i will not stop me from trying something new! I tried a brain brake today and it was a fail! #MasteryChat
A2: I’m glad I am not hearing people on this chat say “it’s not MY job to...” but I think some people who work in education use this as an excuse #masterychat
A2: I won’t let curriculum get in the way of great teaching. I can make anything interesting by letting students own it and connect to it in an authentic way. If not - it’s pretty pointless
This bid - a metaphor.... #MasteryChat
A1: This is a question right here @chadostrowski holy cow! Never EVER going to use the excuse that "this" kid can't learn because of... they will learn & grow when they feel accepted & we work together. #MasteryChat
A2: one excuse I won't let stop me this week is the one I hear a lot, Ss don't care, they don't want to learn. I refuse to believe it and will keep giving them the opportunity to learn. #TeachBetter#MasteryChat
It is most likely that we are missing one important word time MANAGEMENT... we need to be willing to let some things go. Prioritize #Masterychat#Nan3EDU
A2: even there is only a day left until a week off for spring break I will be at school and expect myself to #BeTheOne for my Ss, because #kidsdeserveit#MasteryChat
A1 Being “better” means always striving to improve and do what is best for kids. No matter what activities I do, how I lead a lesson, I will always talk with students and reflect to best adapt learning to each student. They deserve unique, creative, innovative. #masterychat
Q1 - The #TeachBetter mindset is the relentless pursuit of “Better” in your teaching, your classroom, your school, or your district. What does “Better” mean to you as a teacher? #Masterychat
A2. Trying to not let "lack of time" be the excuse... I'll say intentionally cutting netflix time in the evening is a little sad! Can always be a better steward of the gift of time. #masterychat
Meghan would have me buying in if I was a student in her class. She takes the dreadful...Math...and dresses it up and makes it enjoyable. So proud of her. #masterychat
I have definitely made that same mistake! I have significantly cut back on my level one activities (not so much the number of activities, but the amount of work in each one) and seen a great improvement! #Masterychat
Love that you are keeping at it. I love it. Would love to get there sometime. What did not go as planned? As if anything every goes as planned... lol. #masterychat
Absolutely. Finding like-minded educators out there in the world to boost you up when the going gets tough and that wall is stubborn is key! #Masterychat
A3: The most powerful management tool is relationship building. Build time in your class to have individual conversations with each student daily. #MasteryChat
Q3: I need to be more explicit with my instructions and rituals and routines. A week before spring break, it's easy to get lazy and that's when we all need structure more than ever. #MasteryChat#TeachBetter
A3: With spring break next week for us, it is a great time to plan a bonus community building lesson for when students come back. Share experiences, listen deeply, harness passion to guide the journey back to the curriculum.
#masterychat
#masterychat A3 - It comes down to trying to work with students in ways that are true to their real lives. For instance, I am going to have my students start Youtube channels next week to record their learning. If they are engaged with something they like, management follows.
A3) I’m looking for more ownership in my room. One way I’ll look to start is have the students arrange the room how they’ll all learn best. I’m interested to see their designs. #MasteryChat
A3: At this point in the school year, I feel like we need to focus on growth mindset and positive attitudes in the classroom. Everyone is wore out! We need positive vibes flowing! #masterychat
A3: Because next week is only 3 days long (spring break approaching), I'm using it to preview our next unit, provide students with additional opportunities to review older material, and just add more choice to their routine! @DeckToys@Flipgrid@edpuzzle#masterychat
A3: I need to check in with students I haven't sat down and just talked to for awhile. You know, make sure things are going well outside my class to ensure their success inside my class. #Masterychat
A3: Every day pick two students to notice, and tell them! I noticed you like to wear red, I noticed you really liked the lunch we had today...something! Start a relationship or make it stronger! #MasteryChat
A3: Change up the seating! I used to always change up how students were sitting but got lazy this last unit. Need to move seats and shake things up a bit! #masterychat
A3: More engagement. I want them to want to be in my class & work as badly as they want to be in their favorite class. If they want to leave & not work - I've got some improving to do! #MasteryChat
A3: I spend a lot of time differentiating for my students. One way I will manage this better next week is grouping them by the various phases they are in initially, then teaming them up with students who are at the next phase in order to keep moving forward #masterychat
A3 As patience for everyone wear's thin, making myself stop, think, and react calmly to the natural antsy-ness of my students right now is vital. Nobody is going to get anywhere positive in my class if we are all snapping at each other in frustration. #masterychat
Q1 - The #TeachBetter mindset is the relentless pursuit of “Better” in your teaching, your classroom, your school, or your district. What does “Better” mean to you as a teacher? #Masterychat
A3: I want to implement more restorative practices within the classroom. In SPED, learning empathy, building connections, and effective communication is key to success. Will definitely make a point to build in more of those practices! #masterychat
A3: Honestly Class Management is not an issue in a student centered classroom like mine. My Ss are empowered with choice and choose to keep their space fun and inspiring! #Masterychat#Nan3EDU
A2. Trying to not let "lack of time" be the excuse... I'll say intentionally cutting netflix time in the evening is a little sad! Can always be a better steward of the gift of time. #masterychat

A3a Not currently in a class, but one thing I will be using is the “challenge me” technique. Each student will have to teach me their passion/skill which I will learn and we will document the progress/learning with various tools. I will model learning & have fun. #masterychat
A3: Foresight. Identifying what the expected end may look like in various aspects of the content area and then working backwards to identify what it may take to arrive there. #MasteryChat
A3- I do 'gratitude goodbyes' whenever I can- telling the students one thing about them for which I'm grateful as they leave the class- lately we've been so rushed it hasn't been consistent and I need to fix that. It is such a wonderful way to end our day #MasteryChat
A3: The most powerful management tool is relationship building. Build time in your class to have individual conversations with each student daily. #MasteryChat
Glad to hear this Dene. You are a hard worker and to hear you get to relax makes me smile. Good for you to take time for you..you deserve it, you soul pour every day with your ss. #masterychat
A3 Create a peer tutor(s) position in your classroom, I can’t tell you how effective it was to have students who have mastered material actively help with feedback. Have tutors meet with you during lunch or after school to prep for next class. #MasteryChat

I have found that giving them that option to choose their seats has actually been a good thing. Friends hold each other pretty accountable and challenge them to grow! I definitely do not assign seats as much as I previously did. #masterychat
A3. I have to go back to the beginning and be explicit. My Ss have had a few different subs and we will have to rebuild our community. Morning Meeting will be crucial. #masterychat
A3 Everyday I try to share more of myself with my Ss and learn more about them. Next week I will be doing something brand new with #HyperDocs and project groups. Will need to be on top of my game to make sure Ss get the help them need and stay on track. #MasteryChat
A3 - Always expecting and assuming the best intentions from students and that they all want to succeed is a great way to #teachbetter and reduce management issues. Never "attack" a student but find out "why" or "what" is potentially wrong based on a behavior. #masterychat
A3. One of my biggest passions is creating more opportunities for ownership in my classroom. I teach HS seniors also – no better students to emphasize autonomy to! #MasteryChat
A3 It has been better, just keep pushing for respect, ask Ss what we can work on together, and spend more time interacting w/and learning abt Ss #MasteryChat
A3b When students are engaged, when you build relationships andninvolve them, you automatically diminish classroom management issues. Students help keep the class accountable, you develop leadership and you engage. #masterychat
Patience...I sometimes catch myself letting my impatience get the better of me! Remember that they are kids, kids mess up sometimes and that’s ok #masterychat
A3: with spring break happening I'm going to reflect, recharge, and read 4 great books. I will go back ready to take the last 7ish weeks head on. #MasteryChat
Q3: #masterychat I'm going to review expectations since this week is Spring Break. I'll esp focus on our flex seating and library expectations. I'm lucky bc I have a *very* well behaved group this year so management has been v easy.
Hey #masterychat I'm jumping in late because my drama club ran late!
A1: Better means finding a way to step it up a notch the next day. I can always improve on something!
Q1 - The #TeachBetter mindset is the relentless pursuit of “Better” in your teaching, your classroom, your school, or your district. What does “Better” mean to you as a teacher? #Masterychat
A3) Continue doing what I am doing. I did just get two new kids this month, so maybe I am jumping the gun on their behavior's, but as always we will be fine! #masterychat
Absolutely! So often the behavior issues we see in our classrooms is because students aren't engaged/don't see the value in what they are studying. What are you planning to do to increase that engagement? Any ideas you want to share? #Masterychat
A3: Get my kids teaching more! They know how they want to learn and what engages their peers. Four students are teaching our math lesson tomorrow! We practiced today at lunch! #MasteryChat
A3. I'd like to keep choices for Ss in activities and voices, but work with them on soft skills in making choices and sticking to those choices. #masterychat
How do you do this? Any ideas you can share with us? I know @RaeHughart is a rockstar with this and her #teachfurther model, but I love hearing new ideas from this community! #Masterychat
WE all have this sometimes. It's recognizing it like you are that's important and moving forward to #teachbetter tomorrow (or even the next class period!) awesome! #masterychat
A3: Depends on how you define “management”. All too often, Ts approach management as building and implementing structures for compliance, when it’s truly about bettering engagement. Instead, develop democracy classrooms created from shared norms. #masterychat
This is so incredibly true! Honestly I wish I had time to meet with teachers outside the district to chat too - so many amazing ideas - imagine what happens if we have the time to share! #MasteryChat
#masterychat A3 I am thankful that I have a personality that lets me do classroom management through POSITIVE reinforcement, and LOVE. The more I LOVE my Ss the more blessed my classroom.
A2: My excuse that I need to ignore this week is that I’m so tired adjusting to returning after Spring break. I just need to push through and get things finished. #masterychat
A3: My goal is to slow down and remember that just because we are over 100 days in, some kiddos still need reteaching. I can't assume anything. #masterychat
Alana thank you so so much for this! For recognizing that too, that’s awesome! I haven’t gone completely without working by any means but spring break def called for “nothing” to be on the schedule a few days #MasteryChat
I've been thinking about this a lot recently. Especially since voxer convo about it. Need to discern the difference between empty time and recharge time. #masterychat
Attacking students in their moment of vulnerability (when they are most prone to "act out") is never succesful. Get to the root of the issue. Show compassion and genuine care! #Masterychat
A3 - Always expecting and assuming the best intentions from students and that they all want to succeed is a great way to #teachbetter and reduce management issues. Never "attack" a student but find out "why" or "what" is potentially wrong based on a behavior. #masterychat
#masterychat Q3 Reinforce that students have choices and encourage students to set achievable goals. For example, students can write down a few goals they want to work on. Ownership is very powerful.
I agree completely! Luckily we have chats, and edcamps. Going to #CELI18 on Saturday! Also doing an #CoffeeEduLI on Sunday! Gotta stay connected! #masterychat
A3. I don’t l👀k at classroom management instead our classroom family- we r on spring break this week so next week plan 2 get my HUGS 🤗 first pumps 🤛🏻👊🏻💥 and high fives ✋🏻 in- next week our family will be doing collaboration projects, March madness b-ball fun #Masterychat
✨A3: MIX IT UP!!!! We have been working through the informative writing process step-by-step in a collaboration circle with dimmed lighting and a little faux fire! I facilitate, they write, we collaborate, they share, and offer feedback. It’s been a game changer!✨ #MasteryChat
Spring is still a little ways off here in NE Ohio.. but as soon as it is above freezing, we are totally going to go explore our school grounds! #Masterychat
A3-The best S management strategies are ENGAGEMENT strategies! Let's step out of our comfort zone and try something new our Ss will love and make them a part of instruction. Get their feedback on new things to try and how to make the classroom better. #masterychat#biogiraffe
I've been thinking about this a lot recently. Especially since voxer convo about it. Need to discern the difference between empty time and recharge time. #masterychat
a3. Need to get get uberfocused on long term intentional planning/design to be sure that classes are used well/efficiently/effectively as the year is coming to an close quickly. Can't believe how the year has flown. Every day is important! Can't let off the gas yet! #masterychat
A3: I may be getting a new student soon, so I plan to go over classroom expectations with my whole class and using various methods to welcome the new member to our classroom community. #masterychat
I know! I love these chats! Also helpful that I'm limited to a certain number of characters - once I start talking about math & teaching I'll go on and on and on...... #MasteryChat

Q4 - Differentiation is one of the most powerful ways we can #TeachBetter, but it can be difficult. I developed @thegridmethod to help me do this in my classroom. How do you reach the multiple needs of students in your classroom? #masterychat
Yes! Ownership with Older Students is best found with Purpose in their Learning. Partnering with the community to make this happen is the Easiest, most effective way to make an explosion of awesomeness!

A3: It’s all about the relationships with Ss. Build relationships, relevant and engaging learning opportunities and management won’t be an issue. #TeachBetter#masterychat
How do you do this? Any ideas you can share with us? I know @RaeHughart is a rockstar with this and her #teachfurther model, but I love hearing new ideas from this community! #Masterychat
Kentucky. I love it here and I love being a teacher but it’s a bad place to be a teacher right now with all of the politics going on with our governor.
I just keep saying, “This too shall pass!” #masterychat
A4: Self-paced classroom - Ss work at their own pace - no one has to wait on others and no one moves ahead before they're ready - gives me a chance to give Ss what they each need & work with so many Ss in small groups/individually! #MasteryChat
A4 One of the best ways to reach your students is to try and personalize learning for each student. I try to avoid using the one size fits all approach. Build individual course plans and allow students to help design their learning journey with you. Build leadership. #masterychat

A3) If you what to change the paradigm, you need to change the whole school's culture! How Modle it every day, practice it, implement it! This is in my room, most important...Teach the pillar of "GRIT" #masterychat
A4: In my 8th grade classroom my kiddos are part of a Customized Learning cohort - so it's all based on their needs. In 7th grade we've been working a lot of PBL. Kids are differentiating within their groups #masterychat
Q4 - Differentiation is one of the most powerful ways we can #TeachBetter, but it can be difficult. I developed @thegridmethod to help me do this in my classroom. How do you reach the multiple needs of students in your classroom? #masterychat
Self pacing is big, no work is late work. Choice in assignment/sometimes assessments. Using standards based grading and feedback for growth. #MasteryChat

A4: I teach through videos which leads to a self-paced course that is designed to meet the unique needs of my students. It is unreasonable to expect kids to learn at the same pace and even more unreasonable to expect them to learn content they are not ready for #MasteryChat
A4: Choice boards for the win! Letting them collaborate and work in groups, but always keeping a mindset that everyone CAN accomplish the learning target. It might not look the same way as their neighbor, but they can get there. #masterychat
Q4 - Differentiation is one of the most powerful ways we can #TeachBetter, but it can be difficult. I developed @thegridmethod to help me do this in my classroom. How do you reach the multiple needs of students in your classroom? #masterychat
A4 I do through #pbl based on their interests, and with station rotations in class and the diff activ and my ability to teach each student and each group, #blendedlearning#teachbetter#masterychat
A4) Individualizing for where and how students needs can be met. I love the @NWEA learning continuum to help boost students skills on what their strong at and what they need #MasteryChat
A4) Teaching SPED I have nonverbals all the way to 4th graders reading at grade level. I use a lot of small group instruction. I work one on one quite a bit. Whatever needs to be done. #masterychat
Use data to inform (not drive) instruction , first need to know where kids are before creating effective grouping. I used rotating stations in some classes where each station scaffolded to more challenging material #MasteryChat
A3: At our inquiry-based schl, my 1st grdrs have flexible seating, freedom & plenty of open-ended ?'s. I'm in the midst of lrng new tech to entice them even more into our units of study! They know that the calmer they are, the easier it is for us to try new things. #Masterychat
#masterychat A4 - I develop lesson plans and curriculum with options built right in. Choose your own group, read your own books, choose your own topic, have a different final product than everyone else. There are so many simple ways to truly differentiate.
A4 Jumping in late from MD. I am always working on differentiation but I love that Google Classroom allows you to assign different tasks to various students "secretly" to meet their needs. Stations are another great way Ss can choose what they need. #masterychat
A4: Differentiation has been one of our school's initiatives this year. I have been working to incorporate more voice and choice in my room so they can uniquely express and show me what they know. Waaaay better than a multiple choice test! #masterychat#waledchat@ERobbPrincipal
A4: Adaptation, like an animal out of its natural environment has to adapt to something or some place new, my goal is to adapt teaching and learning to cover all bases, interests, needs, enrichment... #MasteryChat
A4 UDL and Personalized learning. Also...I teach in a Workshop Model and confer with my students. I know where they are and what they need several times each class. #masterychat
A4 Can personalize and differentiate more by first knowing the Ss, build the relationships, find out their interests, needs, keep communicating and learn and grow together #masterychat#personalizedlearning
Honestly this is a constant battle for me. I want my kids to see grade level content so they aren’t seeing it for the first time all year at end of year tests...but then my small groups are all leveled! #masterychat
Q4 - Differentiation is one of the most powerful ways we can #TeachBetter, but it can be difficult. I developed @thegridmethod to help me do this in my classroom. How do you reach the multiple needs of students in your classroom? #masterychat
A4. I use Universal Design for Learning to create differentiations that will assist all learners, with some of my special learners in mind! I also differentiate directly to individuals, but I find UDL is my most powerful tool. #MasteryChat
Yes! Compliance does not = learning. It does not = fulfilling experiences. It does not = engagement and excitement for life.
We should not look for compliance. We must seek out undeniable enthusiasm in our students! #Masterychat
A4: Lots of station work and conferencing with small groups. Try to isolate skills and encourage students to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses in regards to that skill. #Masterychat
A4: I found that getting away from whole group teaching allows me to meet with all Ss every day to support and push them wherever they are at. #masterychat
Ask students to give you feedback on the lessons. They will tell you how they like to learn best. Make the students partners in the creation process. It will engage and reach them better. #MasteryChat
A3: I want to write personal messages to each of my kids on a back of an inspirational quote I already have them printed out I just have to cut them. I want to put them in their lockers #masterychat
A4 - Project-based learning with true student voice - either through the project itself (genius hour) or specific roles they make/choose. It's way easier to teach AND learn when you care and choose what you're doing. #edchat#masterychat#TeachBetter
Q4 - Differentiation is one of the most powerful ways we can #TeachBetter, but it can be difficult. I developed @thegridmethod to help me do this in my classroom. How do you reach the multiple needs of students in your classroom? #masterychat

Q4 - Differentiation is one of the most powerful ways we can #TeachBetter, but it can be difficult. I developed @thegridmethod to help me do this in my classroom. How do you reach the multiple needs of students in your classroom? #masterychat
A4) I am always observing, checking for understanding (and depth), noticing understandings & misunderstandings,&using this as formative assessment data to help me change up my teaching &/or learning to fit the individual needs (at least that's my aim). #masterychat
#MasteryChat A4: I always try to use the principles of UDL, which provides many options for Ss to be engaged and empowered. From there, subtle nuances to reach indiv Ss as necessary.
A4 - I use @thegridmethod to reach ALL students in my classroom and am able to help others #teachbetter across the country by sharing it with them. We can always do more though, increase engagement, create choices, provide options and so much more! #masterychat
A4 I try to provide multiple pathways to access the information. Videos, articles at different levels and online resources. All Ss also have Google Read/Write, which I am still learning about #masterychat
A4 Provide a diverse range of opportunities for activities to meet the needs of all the students. Helps to have a class profile. #TeachBetter#Masterychat
Honestly - the only way I have found how to do this consistently is utilizing @thegridmethod. I hate to admit it, but I did not do as much as I should have done for my students until now #Masterychat
A4: My classroom is K-5 self contained with social emotional needs (and others) so differentiation is integral for success. I teach with hands on lessons and differentiate according to individual needs. Here’s one example... #masterychat
A4: I get to know Ss on a personal level. Figure out what makes them tick. Then adjust to their tastes. Every kid and every class and every year is different. #MasteryChat
A4: During class, I provide leveled questions on worksheets and sort groups homogeneously and heterogeneously. Lab class allows me to have more student directed learning, where they can go at their own pace #masterychat
I teach science, but I have seen them for every subject! My favorite is to make sure I have options for paper and virtual experiences so everyone is comfortable! #Masterychat
To #teachbetter means starting each day as a new adventure, challenge, & chapter. Better means constantly learning and participating- no matter how tired you are. #masterychat
Q1 - The #TeachBetter mindset is the relentless pursuit of “Better” in your teaching, your classroom, your school, or your district. What does “Better” mean to you as a teacher? #Masterychat
#masterychat A4 I have been blessed to build a classroom environment where Ss are willing to help each other. IMO when Ss who need a helping hand are tutored by their peers, it is a win win situation.
A4: @mdeegan122 uses @thegridmethod to run her Math class. It's incredible witnessing this process in action. Again, I wish I was a kid again. #masterychat
A4: #masterychat I teach a 2/3 combo so my whole life is differentiation! I include my 2nds who are ready for 3rd math concepts in the 3rd lessons. I teach whole group when it works, & make changes for the diff grade levels. IE 3rd gr is writing 6 paragraph opinion essays
Q4 - Differentiation is one of the most powerful ways we can #TeachBetter, but it can be difficult. I developed @thegridmethod to help me do this in my classroom. How do you reach the multiple needs of students in your classroom? #masterychat
Loving the UDL reference here! I absolutely agree in it's power but many teachers need help with practical application. Keep up your awesomeness! #masterychat
A3. This week I asked Ss what they would keep/change. I am going to implement their feedback next week. One thing I hadnt done in a while was one on one conferences so I will be meeting with individuals while they work in groups. #masterychat
#MasteryChat A4. I teach 5th grade and within the Math Block Learning Centers are included. There's rotation and the best time I think is the small group instruction
I love@Seesaw for helping with meeting my Ss needs. I can push out activities to my Ss based on their needs. I can also provide feedback at home, without carrying home a ton of journals or worksheets. Their work is authentic and shows their growth #masterychat
A4 I do teach my students where they are, they work on "owning our learning" projects, which is like to genius hour, meet with individuals or small groups, and working my way through the #gridmethod :) #MasteryChat
A4. Personalization and student-centered (with choice) assignments naturally allows for differentiation and the many fruits that come along with allowing for student agency in the classroom. #masterychat
Q4 - Differentiation is one of the most powerful ways we can #TeachBetter, but it can be difficult. I developed @thegridmethod to help me do this in my classroom. How do you reach the multiple needs of students in your classroom? #masterychat
A4: I have a list of accommodations in my back pocket at all times. Check in with ss after each direction. Allow them to ice around. Talk to text. And I ask them frequently what they need to be successful. I make sure to have a conversation with each ss every #masterychat
My classroom is based off of tough rigor, but with exciting readings/content and many opportunities for students to work together. The year started off with high expectations and fun topics so students are used to this #masterychat
I like building in options for choice within the grids I create! Not only are students owning their learning with @thegridmethod, but they are also owning their choices. Hellloooo engagement and student buy in! :) #Masterychat

A4. The best way to differentiate lessons for Ss is to get to know your Ss by building relationships with them. Once you know each Ss needs, then you can design for each S. Ss voice is very imp. in the learning process as we are designing lessons to their needs. #masterychat
A4: I feel as though all I do is differentiate. Having small groups all day I'm working in the moment taking a few extra seconds to address a specific need, dropping original lesson for the needs the students are telling me in the moment. #MasteryChat
You're not alone Cecily! This is actually the same reason I created @thegridmethod in my own classroom. Mastery wasn't showing up...more accountability was needed and I had to reach all my S's where they were not where I wanted them to be. #masterychat
A4b) Quick @quizizz games are great formative assessments. You can then use that data to go down multiple paths for what students need based upon that data #MasteryChat
A4. @geniushour is huge! My kids developed their own rubric and presentations which had 2 includ an activity for audience to engage in;) one group did Helen Keller and taught sign language! Some incorporated #imovies#appsmashes -
Sky was limit! So creative! #Masterychat
my Ss will be presenting the next 4 days on #pbl and talking about #SDGs and the authentic learning they got thru connecting globally, #TeachBetter#MasteryChat
A4: Having some para educator time helps me run more groups, I use tech to help give kids practice at different levels, student choice in reading and writing, one to one conferences to name a few thing #masterychat

A4- As a special ed teacher- we always differentiate based on IEPs. Use choice boards and PBLs .Also small group instruction and conferencing.#masterychat
Have you ever thought about post-it notes? You can print them on your printer. I do it a few times a year...for 130 kids. It's quick with post-it notes. And you can get a free template on TpT. #masterychat
Let's chat sometime Kareem! A bunch over on https://t.co/2NDCzSgvtV including a free course that walks you through it. But I'd love to connect and chat about it. #masterychat

✨CHOICE allows for natural differentiation! In reading, students can choose books that appeal to them and are at a level they are comfortable with. Offering creative choice to demonstrate learning also equals instant differentiation and increased motivation!✨ #MasteryChat
Q5 - Enhancing instruction with tech can be a great way to #TeachBetter. Tech should ALWAYS improve good teaching NOT replace it. What is one way you use tech to #TeachBetter in your classroom? #masterychat
#masterychat Q4 Allowing students to question and wonder about new topics allows for differentiation. Also, allowing choice in the ways that students can show their learning. Having peer "checkers" checking student work and providing time for students buddy time is crucial.
I write them a quick inspirational note on an index card before each test - 108 students - I think I'm going to try to post-it notes.....maybe my hand will hurt less! #MasteryChat

Stella! I have to tell you that I am using a quest in @classcraftgame that is built on #masterylearning w/ @thegridmethod, & has multiple paths for Ss to take (took an old choice board and split it up into different pieces of the quest). So MUCH AWSOMENESS! #masterychat

Understanding how ss learn, providing options for individual success, understanding & applying multiple learner techniques, while talking less and listening to s’s more is my differentiation. #masterychat
A5 I use tech to offer new possibilities for learners. I love using @Flipgrid to allow students to share verbal responses from anywhere and to be shared with anyone. Include parents and other classrooms in these answers. Break down walls/barriers. #masterychat
Q5 - Enhancing instruction with tech can be a great way to #TeachBetter. Tech should ALWAYS improve good teaching NOT replace it. What is one way you use tech to #TeachBetter in your classroom? #masterychat
A5: Jobs of the future will require students to be more proficient with a computer than simply knowing where the "on" button is. I use tech to give them authentic tasks in class like a web design project for a museum or a Westward Expansion Twitter Chat. #masterychat@PHausTech

A5: Tech tools can allow students show mastery and understanding of topics in creative ways. This is imperative for our diverse student group in 2018 #Masterychat
Q5 - Enhancing instruction with tech can be a great way to #TeachBetter. Tech should ALWAYS improve good teaching NOT replace it. What is one way you use tech to #TeachBetter in your classroom? #masterychat
A5: I use tech to replace lectures. This frees me up to spend class time focusing on supporting students through reflection, revision and reassessment. Students learn best when they are revisiting their work #MasteryChat
A5 Student generated questions creates stronger and deeper learning. Inquiry using this idea leads to even deeper thinking and questioning. Our 1:1 tech allows students to satisfy their curiosities. #masterychat
Nahhhh. They all just need a little push & someone to let them know "they've got this" while they test - and I think it annoys them when I say it out loud a million times - so I write it down! #MasteryChat

I use @DeckToys to create the paths. I'll have a review path for older topics as I'm beginning to use more #sbg - just started! Then I use a new topic path, to review what we're learning now. It's the perfect place to watch videos, work with peers on harder problems #masterychat
A5: Gamify. Also, I love that tech can give them immediate feedback. I can't possibly check all student's work during class and give individualized help. Tech doesn't replace me, it helps me. #TeachBetter#MasteryChat
A5: This is an area I’m working to improve. Right now I mostly just use it to show videos to enhance our lessons but I plan to incorporate a lot more next year. I just got Google Apps for Littles in the mail today! 🙂#masterychat
A5: I've seen virtual manipulatives, and those would be SO much easier (cheaper) than buying the actual manipulatives. I'd also like to find an online way to do student reflections. Also, @Desmos .... definitely want to look into that (:
#MasteryChat
A5: I encourage the “research process” throughout class. Having devices handy helps to build knowledge seekers. From there we move to being knowledge creators. #MasteryChat
But 6? All for writing, but that sounds like a ton for that age. You're right... #PublicEd. One of these days, I would love to hear y'all talk about writing developmentally through the grades! ;) #masterychat
A5: I'm always looking to see if it can take the work to a level of redefinition or if it's built into a standard. Effectiveness doesn't come from the tech - it comes from the manipulation of it to acquire learning. #masterychat
A5: The "Netflix" generation doesn't need you to deliver content. Set up learning pathways they can access on their own. Love this conversation! Great stuff in #LT8keys@thomascmurray@E_Sheninger#masterychat
A5 Love being able to assess for learning with @goformative and @socrative and @edpuzzle. I can take the pulse of the room in a flash to see if I am on the right track or not. #MasteryChat
I’ve had good experience with ten marks, I-ready, read 180 etc. however as the question implies these are just tools. Without procedures, relationships, and classroom culture, tech is inadequate. #masterychat
A5: it helps serve as a tool for visual learners and for students that miss lessons can get a caught up. I like recording lessons for this purpose plus it always me to reflect on my craft.
#MasteryChat
A5b: A quote that recently stuck with me... Technology will always enhance and amplify great teaching but it will also accelerate the failure of poor teaching.

A5: I have loved starting up @Flipgrid and giving students voice and letting them reflect back with peers. I'm going to figure out and start using #booksnaps with Google Slides after spring break. #MasteryChat
Q5 - Enhancing instruction with tech can be a great way to #TeachBetter. Tech should ALWAYS improve good teaching NOT replace it. What is one way you use tech to #TeachBetter in your classroom? #masterychat
A5: I create videos for my lessons. Not to replace me as the teacher but to help my Ss that want to move ahead & to help my Ss when they're at home & can't just ask me something right away. #MasteryChat
Q5 - Enhancing instruction with tech can be a great way to #TeachBetter. Tech should ALWAYS improve good teaching NOT replace it. What is one way you use tech to #TeachBetter in your classroom? #masterychat
A5: Using formative assessment tools like @GetKahoot@quizizz@plickers@goformative allow teachers to see where students are, and allow students to reflect on their own abilities in real time! Ts can then adjust learning instantly! #masterychat
A5) This year, I took away the school default login for my students. All the 5th graders have their own, so I did the same for my 3rd and 4th graders as well. Which means, I can now have them log into their Google accounts and start using the Drive. #masterychat
A4 Love me some tech! I like to use tech to make content delivery more engaging & tailored to S needs. Rather than stand at the front of the room & explain an idea, I can provide the information in a variety of digital sources w/ built in formative assessment! #masterychat
#masterychat A5 - Using it to engage student voices that you may not hear due to shyness or worry on their part. Products like @Flipgrid, Shared Google Doc Stories, or even a @YouTube channel can give students a chance to share their voice when they wouldn't normally.
A5) I have been playing around w/Google Classroom. My kiddos r only 6 yrs. old, so the logging in/out is tough for them though. It's a work in progress (story of my life). #masterychat
A5 - Using tech like @socrative or GAFE to provide real time data on student mastery is something that allowed me to #teachbetter so I could focus on what matters = STUDENT NEED. #masterychat
A5. I am lucky enough to student teach in a 1:1 iPad district. I try to avoid “$1,000 pencils,” and instead look at how iPads can create new opportunities. Why use exciting, new tech to do old, boring stuff? I also turned to the @ISTE Standards! So helpful! #MasteryChat
Q5 - Enhancing instruction with tech can be a great way to #TeachBetter. Tech should ALWAYS improve good teaching NOT replace it. What is one way you use tech to #TeachBetter in your classroom? #masterychat
#masterychat A5 Two years ago I used my summer camp salary and purchases a @surface tablet and a wirless display adapter. I WOULD NEVER TEACH WITHOUT THESE AGAIN! The ablility to put the @surface tablet on a Ss desk and have them teach the lesson with St collobaration = #Nice
A5- Have used tech a number of ways,We will Skype with an author of a book we read, this has created a lot of excitement from my students. Also connecting globally with virtual penpals @PenpalSchools#masterychat
A5. This year I have added many new apps for student products, but I'm now working on using Google, GoGuardian and other tech to enhance feedback. Looking for easy to use tools to record video or audio which I can then send the link to individual Ss. Any recs? #masterychat
Thank you Chad Really enjoyed my time with #TeachBetter#Masterychat and there are some great contributions here - will check them out tomorrow - well later today! 😀 Good night all 😴
A5: Tech allows choice, creativity, and collaboration. It gives my quietest Ss a voice and a way for Ss to challenge themselves and own their learning. #masterychat
You know it's my favorite! I think I could talk/get excited about tech every day and never get tired of it. So many incredible ways to make learning supercharged, relevant, engaging, all around awesome for kids! #Masterychat
A5: I use an LMS for communication and. For submission of assignments. I also allow my student to use their own devices for different activities because we don’t have any computers in my classroom. #MasteryChat
It definitely makes a difference! My kids last year used to look forward to them & the 1 time I forgot they definitely called me out on it! I also do it for MAP tests - just a reminder to reach for the goal they set for themselves. Any little piece that can help #MasteryChat

A5 We are using digital portfolios to share our learning with families. Ss have begun to think about their audience and whether they are sharing their best work. We have also started Appsmashing to create products and show our thinking. #masterychat
A5- As @alicekeeler says ... If itcan be graded by a computer it should ... let's spend out time connecting with kids rather than grading if the answer was A or C on an MC test #masterychat
A5: Since I don't have books on tape/CD, using tech for kids to listen to books is pretty great. I have a lot of ideas that I'm just starting to implement (we're just getting into Seesaw in my room and I want to work on Flipgrid too!) #masterychat
Q5 - Enhancing instruction with tech can be a great way to #TeachBetter. Tech should ALWAYS improve good teaching NOT replace it. What is one way you use tech to #TeachBetter in your classroom? #masterychat
A5- I love having students research and create things with technology. My students love making Google Slides or PowToons with what they learned #masterychat
A4. Daily 5 is also great for differentiation - gives my kids #voice and #choice@epic also chance to present learned info with choice of app @PicCollage@poppletny@ThingLink during Daily 5. My kids LOVE to teach us!!! Also gives me a chance to work one on one;)

Q6 - After hearing all of the amazing responses from this chat, LET’S COMMIT. What is one way you will #TeachBetter in the coming week? It doesn’t have to a huge change but something to make you better. #masterychat
A5: I forgot....
I also have a fabulous educational technology professor this semester teaching me about more ways to use tech in the classroom! @drzimmerle#MasteryChat
Tech used in 1 station allows s’s appropriate tech exploration and leadership building times. Students are able to lead a small group through a specific part of an ap or program that correlates w/ the topic at hand with ole other groups work w/ textiles, pencils #MasteryChat

I love giving them that space and opportunity to learn the tech and then teach us! I learn so much from my students about the tech we use- and I even have and #edtech degree! #masterychat
I work with a phenomenal special ed English teacher that recorded the entire MS summer book on @YouTube for students to listen along with. Teachers are amazing... #masterychat

Haha! There is so much goodness n Thursday night! I'm going to hit up #waledchat and get my actual school work done! haha! Thanks for the reminder! #masterychat
A6) Listen first, second, and third, before voicing my opinion or thoughts. Too often I still cut kids off before they are done talking because they stop for a moment. #masterychat
A6 - I am committed to continuing to share content, information, training and amazing conversations with this awesome PLN in the continued pursuit to help myself and all of us #teachbetter. #masterychat

Listening to my friend @techyturner now talking about relationships in a webinar, make time, a few min to talk to each S about other interests, learn about them #MasteryChat#TeachBetter
A6 To teach better, I will make learning more REAL and authentic by having it tied to students' current lives. It needs to simply show students that learning has meaning in their lives. #masterychat

A6: I'm going to try incorporating some new tech & continue using one of my new favorite tools @theClassroomQ - check it out - it's awesome - makes my classroom "hands-free" & increases the amount of Q's asked!! #MasteryChat
A6: I have decided to raise the bar overall. But specifically, find more ways to let learning take the shape of my students rather than my students conforming to prescribed learning experiences. #MasteryChat
This is a good time for me to promote #personalizedPD. I am moderating a chat on Inclusion, Tuesday, March 27 at 8-9 CST. My first time, please be gentle. #masterychat
A6: I am currently working on room transformations. I had my first this week and it went very well. I will be taking that down tomorrow and transforming for a new theme next week. My goal is to expand my transformations and do a little more each time. #masterychat
A6: The one thing to be better - no more excuses! Where there is a will there is a way. My kids deserve the best and I will do my best to give just that to them. #BeTheOne#kidsdeserveit#MasteryChat
A6- since our break starts mid week and we are SLO testing, it will be hard, but I'm going to research Socrative for later in April when we return nfrom break. #masterychat
A6 Goal for this last week before spring break starts: Pause. Focus. Breath. Pay attention to the Ss sitting in my room each moment of the day. Take a moment and enjoy the amazing opportunity we each get to help mold and inspire the next generation.#ILoveTeaching#masterychat
A6: Talked w/@mdeegan122 about this. What if we shifted our mindset from a place of fear to operate w/boldness and fearlessness? What impact would modeling risk taking have on our students? What would your classroom look like if YOU operated w/a "Why Not!?!" mindset? #masterychat

A6. Looking forward to trying new things and HOLDING MYSELF/STUDENTS ACCOUNTABLE! No use trying new stuff if we’re not growing together! Failure is acceptable when we reflect and change. #masterychat
A6: No PSSA Prep! We have been “prepping” all year for the big game! Confidence built and Equipment in bag! Stress Free Zone! Fun at the at the plate! #masterychat#Nan3EDU
#masterychat A6 Walking the talk of the #FruiitsoftheSpirit so you Ss can learn these through your actions and words is a NEVER ENDING cycle of prayer and failure as a human. Strive to be a positive source of lOVE for your Ss. In our moral decay of a society this is so important.
A6: I will definitely collect data on our blog to ensure that each child's photo is represented there with current photos before spring break. We will work together to figure out new technology so they have much to anticipate over the days off. #TeachBetter#masterychat

My vote? Nope! We should be teaching them how to Google well. Not a bunch of facts that are google-able. What matters more? Knowing stuff, or learning how to find, understand, interpret, and apply ideas?

Hey #MasteryChat people! Keep the conversation going with us over on Facebook! https://t.co/6tsJhFCIOk . - We'll be live just a little after 9 if you want to watch! :)
A6. I'm going to ask my students to answer 2 questions: 1) One thing I can do/provide to teach them better and 2) Which tasks/assignments they would still want to do, even if they knew it wasn't graded. And neither answer can be "nothing." :-) #masterychat#tlap#teachbetter
A6: I have planned checkpoints in our upcoming unit, but I need daily progress monitoring since my 8th graders are getting a little 8th grade-itis. This will help with feedback so they'll worry less as the year ends. #MasteryChat

#masterychat - A6 - Try to share all the new ideas that I have from Twitter and conferences with my fellow teachers and try to continue to develop my school's teachers. Schools only get better if all members get better; therefore sharing openly is key.
A6: My students are working on a project on @piktochart on a book we read. I’m currently making Google Form for feedback from students for individualized conferences on their work. This will boost engagement for students because of my engagement in their projects #Masterychat
A6 My goal is going to sound a little cliche, but it's to be who each individual student needs. Sometimes, I lose sight of the here and now for focusing on the desired end result. I need to step back and check out the journey we're on. #MasteryChat#TeachBetter
A6: By sharing thinking. Going to continue to blog (https://t.co/nmHucHqSAV) and share thinking around leadership and technology. Also to maximize my time at @ASCD@ASCDconf and share insights by tweeting to @MASCD#masterychat
Hey #Masterychat thank you for the GREAT conversation about becoming better teachers. A key to that is relationships, which @misskoplin and @ToddRisser will be leading a discussion on over in #waledchat starting in just a few minutes. I hope you'll come on over!
A6: continue to be an advocate for kids who do not fit the traditional model of school. Give them an environment to thrive and let their awesome shine.

#masterychat Great chat, looking forward to moderating next week. Our topic will be "Engaging the hard to reach student'. I sure could use some #eduheroes input!!
