  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:08 PM EST
Q1) Are you using any new (to you) #edtech in your Spring courses? Or planning something for later this year? #iolchat

    Project based learning https://t.co/u8MMjb1Oxk #iolchat #LDchat
  • ceasom Jan 11 @ 12:11 PM EST
A1) I'd like to bring in more social media - perhaps a Snapchat image to express a key concept #iolchat
  • philosophypaul Jan 11 @ 12:11 PM EST
A1 New2me #edtech for Spring? Not yet. New to Ss likely: @soundcloud & @padlet Also may need to revisit @Animoto #IOLchat
    In reply to @CenterOnlineEd, @SoundCloud, @padlet, @Animoto
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:12 PM EST
Have you tried this, yet. Colin? Seems like it might be an interesting new way to connect. #iolchat
    In reply to @ceasom
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:12 PM EST
A1) Am not using any new #edtech ..actually trying to simplify a bit & start evaluating from an ID viewpoint what is working or not #IOLCHat
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:13 PM EST
How are you using SoundCloud and Padlet? Animoto is a favorite with my students and their projects. :) #iolchat
    In reply to @philosophypaul
  • philosophypaul Jan 11 @ 12:14 PM EST
Simplification and functionality are good ID objectives. #IOLchat
    • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:12 PM EST
A1) Am not using any new #edtech ..actually trying to simplify a bit & start evaluating from an ID viewpoint what is working or not #IOLCHat
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:14 PM EST
I share your desire to simplify! We need to do this every once in a while - assess value of what's in use before moving on #iolchat
    In reply to @jshamsy
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:14 PM EST
I'll have to check out the @Animoto software --maybe good for making video quality better... #iolchat
    In reply to @philosophypaul, @Animoto
  • ceasom Jan 11 @ 12:14 PM EST
Not tried this yet but planning on trying in in my #edtech class in March #iolchat

Do you find some #edtech gets in the way of learning? #iolchat
    In reply to @jshamsy
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:15 PM EST
A1) New LMS is finally in effect! Seems to be much more robust, but we are all feeling the learning curve this week. #iolchat
  • philosophypaul Jan 11 @ 12:15 PM EST
Using Soundcloud to have Ss post their critical thinking plans. Using Padlet to have Ss see problem-solving answers #IOLchat
    In reply to @CenterOnlineEd
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:15 PM EST
Problem with pre-designed course shells -- can't make too many changes =( #iolchat
    In reply to @CenterOnlineEd
  • ceasom Jan 11 @ 12:16 PM EST
Have gotten good response from using Voki videos for lesson intros in the #edtech class I teach #iolchat
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:16 PM EST
    I find most students don't use it =( #iolchat
    In reply to @ceasom
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:16 PM EST
They do create limitations. Esp. for instructors who aren't involved in course design. #iolchat
    In reply to @jshamsy
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:16 PM EST
Always fun to have to learn a new way of doing things -- hopefully a variation on the same theme #iolchat
    In reply to @CenterOnlineEd
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:17 PM EST
Indeed! All the same components seem to be in place...somewhere... ;) #iolchat
    In reply to @jshamsy
  • philosophypaul Jan 11 @ 12:17 PM EST
Voki is great. I use, but not "new" to me. #IOLchat
    • ceasom Jan 11 @ 12:16 PM EST
Have gotten good response from using Voki videos for lesson intros in the #edtech class I teach #iolchat
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:18 PM EST
So far, but we only started on Monday... #IOLchat
    In reply to @philosophypaul
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:19 PM EST
Q2) How do you make decisions about trying something new? What are the biggest factors in decision or selection process? #edtech #iolchat
  • philosophypaul Jan 11 @ 12:20 PM EST
LMS launch Monday. Big learning curve ahead. #IOLchat
    In reply to @CenterOnlineEd
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:20 PM EST
Absolutely - even when they are similar there's a lot to learn. What LMSs are you moving to and from? #iolchat
    In reply to @philosophypaul
  • philosophypaul Jan 11 @ 12:21 PM EST
Your LMS launch Monday. Big learning curve ahead. #IOLchat
    In reply to @CenterOnlineEd
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:22 PM EST
A2) Will they use it? What value does it add? Is it worth their time? #iolchat
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:22 PM EST
Ahhh! Yes indeed. I thought you were commiserating with your own transition. ;) #iolchat
    In reply to @philosophypaul
  • ceasom Jan 11 @ 12:22 PM EST
A2) Important factors in choosing new #edtech - will it convey the concepts, is it fun & cost effective, students have easy access? #iolchat
  • philosophypaul Jan 11 @ 12:22 PM EST
A2 Hope to look beyond lure of new to functionality and open source. How will #edtech engage Ss and facilitate SLO achievement? #IOLchat
    In reply to @CenterOnlineEd
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:24 PM EST
I think "will they use it?" is huge here. We can build and adopt, but ... #iolchat
    In reply to @jshamsy
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:24 PM EST
I think you nailed it Paul..how does it fit into objectives, is the engagement desirable? #iolchat
    In reply to @philosophypaul
  • philosophypaul Jan 11 @ 12:24 PM EST
With new #edtech time-on-task important for Ss and Ts and may override fun factor. #IOLchat
    • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:22 PM EST
A2) Will they use it? What value does it add? Is it worth their time? #iolchat
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:24 PM EST
Cost effective is another one...and easy access. Sometimes edtech can be very frustrating - defeats the purpose #Iolchat
    In reply to @ceasom
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:25 PM EST
Yes...adult learners especially want to get the task done..no time for "just hanging around." #iolchat
    In reply to @philosophypaul
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:26 PM EST
And "student access" @ceasom! Does it integrate with LMS or other portal? Separate sign in? Will they have to pay? #iolchat
    In reply to @ceasom
  • ceasom Jan 11 @ 12:26 PM EST
Learning curve is another factor to consider. Too high and no-one will use it no matter how good it is #iolchat
    In reply to @jshamsy
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:26 PM EST
Nice thing about a lot of edtech is they have rich mobile sites which is helpful for learners on the go #iolchat
    In reply to @ceasom
  • ceasom Jan 11 @ 12:26 PM EST
LMS integration - yes! Important indeed. Big frustration when it doesn't. #iolchat
    In reply to @CenterOnlineEd
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:29 PM EST
Q3) Have you experienced any #edtech misses or fails? Anything that just didn’t work and had to be removed or replaced? #iolchat
  • philosophypaul Jan 11 @ 12:29 PM EST
When #edtech has poor LMS integration functionality may be low or require additional off-site work that adds time and frustration. #IOLchat
    • ceasom Jan 11 @ 12:26 PM EST
LMS integration - yes! Important indeed. Big frustration when it doesn't. #iolchat
      In reply to @CenterOnlineEd
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:30 PM EST
Agreed! Direct relationship with getting out of the LMS and "losing them" #iolchat
    In reply to @ceasom, @CenterOnlineEd
  • ceasom Jan 11 @ 12:30 PM EST
Agreed! The extra time and frustration isn't worth it #iolchat
    In reply to @philosophypaul
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:30 PM EST
    A3) module videos, https://t.co/bSKOWjnMxX, Twitter =( #iolchat
  • ceasom Jan 11 @ 12:31 PM EST
https://t.co/z799MLIe6F didn't work for you? My students love it #iolchat
    In reply to @jshamsy
  • philosophypaul Jan 11 @ 12:31 PM EST
A3 Earlier LMS versions lacked the plug-in capability for using Turnitin. Problem. Later LMS versions resolved. Miss until a hit. #IOLchat
    In reply to @CenterOnlineEd
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:32 PM EST
That is a great list! Twitter was the same for me ... tried for a couple of years, but it wasn't to be. #iolchat
    In reply to @jshamsy
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:32 PM EST
I like it too..but nobody signed up..the LMS does have a calendar..so maybe it was repetitive #iolchat
    In reply to @ceasom
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:32 PM EST
LIke that phrase "miss until a hit" - sometimes problems can be solved with new versions, tweaks. #iolchat
    In reply to @philosophypaul
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:33 PM EST
Think it is cultural..if only one prof. is doing it..it is "out there" and so most Ss don't know what to do with it #iolchat
    In reply to @CenterOnlineEd
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:33 PM EST
    Alignment..alignment...and....alignment =) #iolchat
    In reply to @CenterOnlineEd
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:34 PM EST
I haven't tried Remind - great point here that no one tool is going to be universally successful though #iolchat
    In reply to @jshamsy, @ceasom
  • philosophypaul Jan 11 @ 12:35 PM EST
Important observation: #edtech can have a community value. Too much new #edtech can distract from the objectives. #IOLchat
    • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:33 PM EST
Think it is cultural..if only one prof. is doing it..it is "out there" and so most Ss don't know what to do with it #iolchat
      In reply to @CenterOnlineEd
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:35 PM EST
    Absolutely! I agree!! #iolchat
    In reply to @philosophypaul
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:37 PM EST
@jshamsy Yes! When it's an "extra" (not aligned, not filling a need of some kind) it takes away from the rest. #iolchat
    In reply to @philosophypaul, @jshamsy
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:39 PM EST
Q4) Who is involved in selecting #edtech for your online courses? Where do you go for information about things you want to try? #iolchat
  • jshamsy Jan 11 @ 12:40 PM EST
A4) the University or me as the instructor. Lately word of mouth or an internet search if I have specific need #iolchat
  • ceasom Jan 11 @ 12:42 PM EST
A4) Faculty have freedom to use just about any #edtech they want in their courses. Program directors & ID team can have input too #iolchat
  • philosophypaul Jan 11 @ 12:42 PM EST
A4 #edtech selection may be influenced by PD but at discretion of Ts. Go to? Twitter chats, PLN, conferences like @OLCinnovate #IOLchat
    In reply to @CenterOnlineEd
  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:43 PM EST
What's something you heard about recently and decided to try (or find out more about). Word of mouth is great for edtech! #iolchat
    In reply to @jshamsy
  • ceasom Jan 11 @ 12:43 PM EST
A4) Sources of new #edtech = social media feeds, chats like #iolchat, word of mouth, etc.
  • jaymelinton Jan 11 @ 12:43 PM EST

To catch up: I look for tools that can help build presence in online courses, are easy for Ss to navigate, & are mobile-friendly. #iolchat

  • CenterOnlineEd - Moderator Jan 11 @ 12:48 PM EST
Is that a tool related to accessibility? We're still not doing that so well as an industry. #iolchat

Interesting. Yes. Is the new #edtech for showboating or S-centered? Believe you answer the latter. #IOLchat
