A1: Being new to the classroom setting, Ss may not be used to working with others and don't understand the concept of collaboration. #PeekaChat
  • byron_gilliland Feb 13 @ 9:04 PM EST
A1. In many cases Ss are not provided with an opportunity or true collaboration- Ts need to allow Ss the opportunity to get up and talk more before true #collaboration happens #PeekaChat #trueSTEM
  • gdorn1 Feb 13 @ 9:04 PM EST
Hi, Gretchen from KY joining in. #peekachat
  • 4XSoccermom Feb 13 @ 9:05 PM EST
A1 They all want to be heard, but don't always know how to listen. Also, there is sometimes that student who will sit back and let other students do the work. #PeekaChat

    • Peekapak - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:03 PM EST
Q1: What challenges do you see in elementary classrooms around students collaborating together?
  • gdorn1 Feb 13 @ 9:08 PM EST
A1. Teachers need to give Ss time to meet Ss and socialize with others in classroom before true colloraboration can begin. Sometimes it's necessary to model expected behaviors for Ss and pair extroverts w/ introverts. #peekachat
  • Peekapak - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:08 PM EST

A2. Ss need more work with critique (as do adults:) it can be a valuable tool that unlocks the door to true #collaboration & #teamwork #PeekaChat #trueSTEM
  • Peekapak - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:10 PM EST
A2: Ss often have problems communicating their frustrations to others. Let them know its okay to have these feelings, then facilitate conversations so Ss can voice opinons in productive ways. #PeekaChat
  • epesART Feb 13 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1 creative minds have a hard time collaborating. They have a vision & it is hard to let others in on that vision. I am trying to focus on the idea of elaboration. #Peekachat
  • EdTechAmber Feb 13 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1) Ss are not aware of how to disagree gracefully with a partner or team. They need to be taught gambits that allow them to respectfully disagree. I also think students need to actively work on communication skills such as praising/complimenting one another. #peekachat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1 - Disagreements, snitching, adults saying "mind your own business/worry about yourself." These things can confuse kids and push them further from being strong collaborators and team players. Instead, we need to teach children how to HELP, rather than blame peers. #Peekachat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:10 PM EST

    • Peekapak - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:09 PM EST
Q2: What aspects of teamwork do students struggle with the most? How can we help students overcome this?
  • Peekapak - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:10 PM EST
always great to have you take part in #PeekaChat @PaulSolarz can't wait to hear more of your thoughts!
    In reply to @PaulSolarz, @PaulSolarz
  • Peekapak - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:11 PM EST
A2: Working with others can be hard - teaching the difference b/w collaborating and compromising will help Ss understand teamwork doesn't require sacrifice. #PeekaChat
  • 4XSoccermom Feb 13 @ 9:11 PM EST
A2 I've worked on assigning roles to allow students to moderate themselves and also have a chance to all do something. They rotate roles so that they get a chance to lead and take direction. #PeekaChat
  • geek_mrs Feb 13 @ 9:11 PM EST
One of the challenges I battle in STEM is getting kids to acknowledge that everyone thinks through a problem differently. Some want to plan everything out first and others learn by trial and error. Both have their strengths and we could all learn from each other. #PeekaChat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:12 PM EST
A2 - Handling disagreements (especially related to responsibility, power, decision-making, workload, etc.). In our classroom, students use Rock-Paper-Scissors to handle most disagreements. We also "Choose Kind" and "Think Win-Win." #Peekachat Excerpt from "Learn Like a PIRATE."
  • EdTechAmber Feb 13 @ 9:13 PM EST
A2) Just as with all other aspects of teaching and learning, MODEL what good teamwork looks like. I always start with "fun" team building activities before moving into more subject-based skills. Allow teams to build that sense of belonging by finding commonalities. #peekachat
  • gdorn1 Feb 13 @ 9:14 PM EST
A2. In teamwork we have some Ss who don't wish to participate and others who want to do all the work. Some who want to particate, but can't because some Ssjust won't share the project work. #peekachat
  • epesART Feb 13 @ 9:14 PM EST
A2 trying to help ss understand the loudest isn’t the only voice. The power of listening is more important than talking. Finding ways to make sure all voices can be heard & valued. It’s a struggle I’m still trying to figure out. #Peekachat
  • crikeypotter Feb 13 @ 9:15 PM EST
A2: I think one of the biggest struggles is using the correct tone and language. I think a lot of barriers come from perspective and if we teach them how to listen and understand, it can be a great toolset for collaboration. #PeekaChat
  • geek_mrs Feb 13 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2) The confident Ss tend to take over and the timid Ss keep their ideas to themselves. I love to amplify the quiet voices by sharing something I heard one of my less confident Ss ideas with the class. #PeekaChat
  • Peekapak - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:16 PM EST
Q3: How do you help your students develop teamwork skills? Please share your thoughts, activities, lessons, videos, etc. #PeekaChat
  • EdTechAmber Feb 13 @ 9:16 PM EST
Have seen this done really well with a structure that @KaganOnline uses called Talking Chips. It uses tangible chips or pieces to manage the people that want to do ALL the talking. Each player is given the same # of chips to contribute to the conversation. #PeekaChat
    • epesART Feb 13 @ 9:14 PM EST

A3 Coincidentally enough we do a ton of #coding & #Engineering (just like Apollo and Sebastian) Both of these cater to #teamwork & offer opportunities for honing these skills #PeekaChat #trueSTEM

Yes - Relationship Building is SO important! That's a main reason that I choose sticks to make partnership every day rather than letting students always work with friends! Get to know everyone in the room! They appreciate it & have made great, new friendships! #Peekachat

  • Peekapak - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:18 PM EST
A3: @Peekapak 's "Qualities of a Good Teammate" activity teaches Ss how they can be stand-up teammates using body language! #PeekaChat
  • KC_SEASportsFan Feb 13 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2: I would say being shy. I know when I was that age...I was. I would also add that when I were a K student I didn't like sharing or did I care what others had to say #PeekaChat Btw, Brett, Lamar, Mo., Aspiring elementary T. Sorry I'm late.
  • 4XSoccermom Feb 13 @ 9:18 PM EST
A3 I try to do a lot of collaborative activities where students have to talk WITH each other. Activities from simple turn and talk, working out problems together, all of our science is hands-on and done in pairs or small groups, reader's theater, creating skits/movies #PeekaChat
  • epesART Feb 13 @ 9:19 PM EST
A3 we get into design firms to approach problems. We use @ideo shopping cart vid to discuss the importance of cognitive diversity. #Peekachat
  • geek_mrs Feb 13 @ 9:19 PM EST
A3) I read “Dog VS Cats” to my classes. #PeekaChat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3 - I teach my students how to give constructive feedback "without tears!" We call them Quality Boosters and use them in writing and final products... #Peekachat
  • epesART Feb 13 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3 before choosing team, we chat about passions, interests & perspectives. We don’t want a team of just close friends bc we all see the problem from same perspective. We need to see 360 view of problem. Ss keep this in mind when creating design firms. #Peekachat
  • EdTechAmber Feb 13 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3)Love to have my teams work together for 6-8 weeks. In the beginning phases of the team formation, we do an awesome brainstorming activity called Consensus Placemat where teammates find commonalities, then build a team name and handshake based on those common things #peekachat
  • gdorn1 Feb 13 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3. At the beginning of STEM, we did an two activities where everyone had to participate in getting a ball inside a cup working together through holding strings and building a pyramid holding strings. #peekachat
  • Peekapak - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:23 PM EST
Q4: How do you encourage and reinforce your students to be collaborative throughout the school year? #PeekaChat
  • Peekapak - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:24 PM EST
A4: Ensure Ss have a safe and welcoming learning environment - this helps them build stronger relationships with each other, and in turn, collaborate better! #PeekaChat
  • byron_gilliland Feb 13 @ 9:24 PM EST
A4 I make an example of Ss during great #collaboration and have them take the lead in sharing what was great about it... they are ALWAYS more than willing to share #PeekaChat #trueSTEM

#peekachat A4: They are assigned to teams of 3-4. Class begins with them going over hmwk. It ends with individuals from each team competing on the board for points. Winning team gets homemade dessert. Also, Ss have roles in exploratory group work: author-editor-spy
  • 4XSoccermom Feb 13 @ 9:27 PM EST
Luckily with our science series we use, it's all hands-on and the students work in pairs or groups. I try to reinforce collaboration by modeling, supporting, and making the expectations clear. #PeekAChat

A4 - When collaboration becomes the culture of the classroom, very little reinforcement is necessary. I just remind them not to be snippy (we're all close like brothers & sisters, so we can be a little snippy!) & provide lots of opportunities to work together! #Peekachat
  • Peekapak - Moderator Feb 13 @ 9:29 PM EST
