Q1 Describe your experience as a pre-service teacher intern. What did you like? What would you change?
-
Jason HS Dean from Joliet
-
-
Larry Hyde, Co-Director of Midwest Principals' Center from St. Charles. Hi!
-
-
A1: I liked my cooperation teacher and working with Ss, longer amount of time
-
A1 Std Tching was an eye opener. I was naive. I always thought there was someone to make the project parts. I learned it was ME
-
A1 Best application process I had was that time but I wish more emphasis was placed on metacognition and reflection
-
Welcome! thanks for joining tonight
-
Great to have you here again Larry!
-
Hi from Abingdon! Kindergarten teacher in a 1:1 classroom
-
Alex larson teacher at Palatine HS tweeting from Lake Zurich
-
Joe Fatheree, Instructor of Creativity and Innovation at Effingham High School.
-
Great to see you back with
-
A1 My cooperating teacher was the best. He encouraged me to try new things and develop my style of teaching
-
Welcome! So glad you are here with us! Looking forward to learning together!
-
A1:more emphasis on making great lessons
-
Great to see you back again!
-
A1 little instruction, little help, thrown into the lions den.
-
A1 trial by fire. Day one I had to teach a pretty advanced topic in autos to seniors. And I loved my experience.
-
A1: Definitely wish I had more practical experience in college classroom. Sitting in lecture halls didn't prep me for teaching
-
A1 I will never forget my 5th day of Std Tch. It began with a note: To Bob & the Sub...THAT got me TEACHING
-
A1: sad to say, my pre-svc was basically turn me lose, very little guidance, swim or drown, made me wish I had more leadership
-
A1: liked all instruction from former teachers.Disliked the lack of both technology training (8 yrs ago) and classroom management
-
A1: I loved my CTs. They always put the sts. first & were willing to share.
-
A1 My experience was split between 2 mentors. 1 tossed me into the water, the other didn't let me do anything. Inconsistent
-
A1 I appreciated that my cooperating teacher looked for my strengths and supported them and pointed out my challenges to change
-
Agreed. My cooperating Ts stepped out of the way, & didn't force their methods on me
-
That's sad. I guess I was really lucky with my own experience.
-
I wish that I had more practice in working with parents at IEP meetings prior to actually running a mtg. https://t.co/j2FrYMRbd8
-
-
A1: Definitely wish I had more practical experience in college classroom. Sitting in lecture halls didn't prep me for teaching
-
A1: I needed to be in more classrooms before student teaching
-
I always tried to do same w/ pre-service Ts who came to my class. Get them up and teaching. Best way to learn
-
A1 I was glad my CT supported me but wish I got more constructive feedback. Have to build up pedagogy and develop through feedback
-
classroom management was a struggle for me too
-
Agreed! Had a single 2 credit hr course in SpEd and that was NO WHERE NEAR ENOUGH! https://t.co/u368pKUUGU
-
-
I wish that I had more practice in working with parents at IEP meetings prior to actually running a mtg. https://t.co/j2FrYMRbd8
-
-
A1: Definitely wish I had more practical experience in college classroom. Sitting in lecture halls didn't prep me for teaching
-
A1.1 Immediate immersion can be helpful, but there needs to be time to discuss, process, & reflect.
-
Q2 Do teacher internships adequately prepare teachers for what’s to come in the classroom?
-
I learned tech on an Apple II in 1994. But didn't see an Apple again until 2001, and few other computers in between
-
A1: I had 2 placements. Great to be able to st.teach at different grade levels in different districts. Eye opening.
-
A1 There is a large variance of value with the cooperating teacher experience. Much like a student experiences with teachers
-
A1: I don't remember much about my student-teaching. Ha! I learned a lot but don't remember much.
-
A1 Less 50 page lesson plan requirements, it should be a requirement that all STs do a year long experience
-
A1: more situational discussions...what will you do if this happens, discuss things that might/will go wrong
-
A2: There is no way one semester truly prepares any of us for teaching. Best we can hope for is learning how to grow.
-
My 1st yr. was in a school I student taught. That was a good year! 2nd & 3rd year were rough elsewhere.
-
A2 nothing can prepare you. And each district you work at is different each school in a district is different.
-
A1 Rarely do our best teacher receive STs to mentor. Experience doesn't equate to quality mentors
-
A2 There is so much more to the profession than meets the eyes, it's tough to prepare for everything.
-
YES. New teachers w/o schema cannot appropriately tackle UbD and other advanced planning
-
A2 Partially. Rooms already have foundation laid by CT & that provides immense support. Goal isn't to always grow as educator
-
Those rooms need to be open for Ss at the college level to explore & practice. Hate the locked down tech approach
-
A2: I think they've gotten better but mine did not prepare me for what teaching was really like, now student teach for 1 yr in MI
-
A2: depends on the Ts & the school & pedagogy
-
A2 what can be learned is how to adapt and learn as you move into this career.
-
A2: No, students need to take classes that teach them how to deal with stress, being overwhelmed, disrespect, etc.
-
A2: I felt very prepared actually but wish I had student taught in the fall to go through set up of room, routines, environment.
-
A2 No, far too much hand holding and slaps on the back. Much more opportunity to fail and to weed out poor Ts
-
A2.1 To be able to adjust, adapt, relate, and think on your feet - these are qualities that help with classroom survival.
-
Gaby from Tinley Park, jumping in late <---me, in all edchats lately :/
-
I remember writing full M. Hunter lesson plans when stu teaching; I had 4 grade levels of ELA at a Catholic school.
-
My college had a semester of practicum (2 full days/week) prior to st. teaching.
-
A2: I really feel it depends on the cooperating teacher and how much they care about the success of their student teacher.
-
A2 Student teaching is a good start. Coursework should be better mix of practical & theoretical w/ instruction by Ts in the field
-
A2: MI went to 1 year of student teaching and less of those Ts quit in first 5 years
-
And also how to work with parents and families who don't always see eye to eye with you. https://t.co/tSi3EmpOSP
-
-
A2: No, students need to take classes that teach them how to deal with stress, being overwhelmed, disrespect, etc.
-
goal isn't to develop good teachers rather to pump out degrees
-
A2.2 It wasn't the curriculum or instruction I felt underprepared for, it was the day-to-day stuff.
-
Yes, lots of lesson plan writing; anticipatory set... now the merits of such plans are being challenged
-
Welcome! Thrilled we get to learn with you!
-
A2 Teacher internships are necessary but quality depends upon the teacher and the process of reflection.
-
When you look back at it 20 yrs later, it's a blur. I only remember breaking up a fight on my 1st day - b4 school
-
Yes, a lot more paperwork, & red tape than most would imagine
-
that was definitely a struggle at 22 when I wasn't much older than Ss I was teaching
-
Trial by fire isn't just a euphamism...
-
A1: was given busy work. Nice to learn tricks/tips for author visits. Wish I could've had more face time w/ Ss
-
Tough trying to get good vet Ts to implement new tech b/c it goes against their training
-
Q3 What sorts of experiences should pre-service teachers have in order for them to be prepared for a teaching position?
-
A2: Thnk my mentor was nervous2 give up reins. weird bc I'd bn on my own in a sch library already (hired as LibAsst in a solo lib)
-
Some are very open to it though. Love their growth mindset.
-
Agree, Sean. I have some strong veteran Ts very willing to try new things.
-
-
A3: Setting up classroom, develop and implement routines, have PD and actually apply it, reflect often, connect.
-
A3: I think pre-service Ts should focus on classroom management & varying strategies. Try not to bog them down in paperwork
-
A3 I envision, preservice Ts being "behind the glass" to analyze and critique live teaching with peers and then taking their turn
-
A3 information on Special Education. Did not have a lot of experience in that realm
-
A3 Have a lesson go wrong way & have to adapt immediately. Making connections w/ Ss. Trying something new. All needed experiences
-
A3 Tough situations, multiple demographic/socioeconomic classrooms, strong reflective practices, PT conferences
-
All depends on how they're approached, "You need to do this" doesn't work.
-
A3 Wow - great question! Relationship building, assessment design, unpacking learning standards, grading philosophy, to name a few
-
A3 Creating class expecations and learning systems. Differentiating instruction. Challenging status quo and a CT who supports this
-
A3:I should have had to video my lesson and reflect on it...student teachers have to do this now
-
A3 classroom management , communicating with families, working on a team, assessment, differentiating instruction
-
A3: Adapting to unexpected situation and tough situations. Interacting with Ps https://t.co/smj4ZYJzW9
-
-
Q3 What sorts of experiences should pre-service teachers have in order for them to be prepared for a teaching position?
-
I really like this idea. Even recording & critiquing own time in the classroom.
-
A3.1 Timely & meaningful feedback, read Hattie's research. Read, read, read!
-
And learning how to deal with higher-ups who might not see things the same way. Work to change system
-
You said a lot there - totally agree!
-
I had to do this with microteaching
-
Yay! You said my favorite word, REFLECT! I think a lot of my recent growth can be attributed to blogging.
-
book studies while you teach
-
A3 It's the preservice T feedback that is most important for growth.
-
Sad that student Ts are doing this but most Ts won't do it unless forced. That needs to change for Ss sake.
-
taught how to give effective feedback
-
A3:I think there needs to be a class on pedagogy to really think about what we do in education.Extra cred/grading/etc.
-
Q4 Should student teachers be allowed to teach in schools where there are significant needs?
-
There is so much helpful stuff out there being shared - curation skills are important too.
-
So easy to record yourself for personal reflection & critique. Just set your phone in the corner of room
-
-
agreed, Twitter is very powerful, need to find biggest bang for buck, can't do it all
-
A3.2 Digital executive functioning - how to connect, organize, & function effectively w/ cloud-based resources
-
Do you find this to be true of change in general or just tech? Tell me more.
-
Sure beats the tripod from a decade ago. Just found some of those old VHS tapes.
-
A4 The best experiences come from working with at risk students. If ST are properly coached, all involved will benefit
-
Have you seen the new Google Forms? Charts built right into response tab on the form, no need for spreadsheet
-
A4 Love schools that have students get experience in rural, suburban, and urban schools. Multiple demographic experiences
-
A4 Not a question of if. If we believe we are producing strong preservice T we should put them where they could make big impact
-
A4: I would think that's most schools now and would create a more real experience
-
A4: Yes, all can benefit.
-
Funny how much effort it took, but we still did it. Now it's simple but Ts don't.
-
I see more with a failure to gain buy in from vets. Most will accept if there is meaning
-
A3 colleges need to open to what schools are doing so many young teachers don't have a grasp on what's going on in education
-
A4: yes of course! they need to experience the real world not the "ideal teaching environment" https://t.co/T62D8Xzzs1
-
The Internet has changed the nature of learning. Schools & Ts need to adapt to remain relevant
-
-
A4: Aren't there significant needs in all schools? But yes, of course - great way to learn to be resourceful, more responsible
-
A4: definitely makes you a better teacher and more mcguyverish (have to be crafty and think on feet to make great lessons on dime
-
A4 If one can learn to teach to significant needs Ss, then one can teach to any Ss. The best teachers should teach to those Ss.
-
Very well said! https://t.co/o2A2cceD6a
-
-
A4 If one can learn to teach to significant needs Ss, then one can teach to any Ss. The best teachers should teach to those Ss.
-
A4 Don't all schools & Ss have needs? Identifying & addressing these needs is part of the art of teaching
-
I think it's true in general w/ Ts that don't have growth mindset
-
A4 it takes a certain kind of person to work in some areas. Not all are ready or able manage that
-
also the biggest challenge..how can I reach and engage everyone in my lesson today
-
Closer to retiring Ts don't see value in change for only couple yrs of possible benefit
-
Q5 Should teachers have internships after they begin teaching?
-
Interesting point, I have been fortunate to work in schools that mirror my suburban experience.
-
A4: sometimes those young, eager, passionate T's are exactly what those S's need
-
A5: Not sure about internship, but they need a well structured mentoring program, but we all need Individual Learning Plan
-
-
A5 Quality mentor programs with peer observation/coaching would suffice
-
A5 Not sure "internships" is the term used but sig increase in the fidelity and effects of mentorship programs MUST be increased
-
A5 Yes, but only the highest performing new teachers should take on an internship.
-
But sometimes, breaking from your own experiences, can show you a new passion.
-
A5 Interesting concept! I have heard of teacher exchanges - this would be an interesting practice for professional learning
-
A5: Mentorships exist for 1st yr Ts. Dont know how they'd manage internships
-
A5: No, more emphasis should be placed on need to connect, reflect. That first year can feel overwhelming enough, and isolating
-
So difficult to differentiate instruction for new T who doesn't have a full toolbox of strategies
-
A5: I think the mentoring programs offered need to be overhauled. Lots of paperwork & not necessarily what new teachers need.
-
A5 I have said that admin should be on a rotation to go back in the classroom for a year. Learning by experience!
-
I will exchange to Hawaii
-
agreed that's how I got into methods I currently use in the classroom.
-
You should meet ! Retiring this year & sharing her learning again.
-
Especially during the winter term, right?!?
-
Plus, lotta mentors take shortcuts, and new teachers not the most vocal/ self-advocates
-
A5: should coteach one period with their mentor teacher
-
Glad I could join in for a while tonight, but Dad's Taxi rides agin.
-
A5 not a bad concept, could get teachers thinking outside of their content too. Need more hours in the day
-
I'll look for her. I'm doing an ICE workshop on personalizedPD on Fri
-
I have a student teacher and he has a good toolbox, showing lessons of mine to add to it
-
-
I am concerned that some quality candidates are gone due to bad press about education.
-
Q6 In the current shortage of teachers, should alt cert be promoted w/ student teaching being their 1st year of active teaching?
-
YES! New teachers didn't want to rock the boat. :(
-
A6: I think that would only work if they had a shortened day or cotaught with someone
-
A6 Focus should be on developing Ts we already have. Why build a house when you just need to change to siding?
-
Great! Bummed to miss this year, but heading to next month.
-
A6 Another interesting concept! I agree there is merit in practical, life experiences. Do you agree?
-
A6 if they have proper support from their schools sure but that's not commonplace
-
A6: Definitely. With a strong support team, est. curriculum. I think it could be very doable & beneficial
-
A6: they would need more guidance than having own room for year otherwise I think many would quit...still have shortage
-
You'd be surprised. pretty much my first 2 yrs in ed.
-
that's how I got involved in pbl with outside mentors so yes I agree.
-
I could see a co-teaching structure that could be beneficial.
-
A6 I have seen alt cert candidates. Some are able to flourish and some break under the pressure. Must find way to support more.
-
Great conversation ! Will catch up with the archive later.
-
support is very important
-
Q7 How can we create additional pre-service teaching experiences to add to the pool of viable teaching candidates?
-
A6: I'm in favor of an alt cert, I believe a lot of quality candidates don't have time/funds for 4 yrs.
-
I'm signing off . Have a good night everyone
-
A6.2 I was lucky to have District- & admin-level support, assistance.
-
A7: cut out the gen Ed requirements and take focused classes to degree only
-
Thanks so much for being here!
-
A7. College is too late; we need to present teaching as an option earlier & support w/classroom experiences!
-
Q7: Summer camps/conferences geared towards future teachers. Connect and empower them! Fuel them when classes aren't in session.
-
A7: Summer camps/conferences geared towards future teachers. Connect and empower them! Fuel them when classes aren't in session.
-
A7 Reach out to colleges and get them involved with cool things your classes are doing bring them to our world
-
Love this idea... thinking about how we can capitalize on some of our summer PD and invite pre-service Ts. https://t.co/EqV3XfnHxx
-
-
A7: Summer camps/conferences geared towards future teachers. Connect and empower them! Fuel them when classes aren't in session.
-
A7 Much like principal eval training, use videos to demo quality vs. poor teaching. They learn to how rate teaching practices
-
A7 How many high schools have Future Educator clubs? How many schools offer a scholarship to education majors?
-
A7: After-school academic big bro/sisprograms could guage interest as early as hs, ms
-
That's about all that we have time for here on this evening! Thanks for joining us!
-
Connections between schools & higher ed is critical to teacher success & growing a pool of exceptional candidates.
