Welcome to tonight’s chat! Please introduce yourself. Tell what & where you teach. Share your blog link if you have one.
Don't forget: use on responses & replies to others, label your responses w/A1, A2, & follow anyone chatting with us
I'm Brynn Allison, chat co-host. 7 yrs teaching HS English & reading interventions in Philly. Blog: https://t.co/cyx1WlfdS8
I'm Amber Hooks, 2ndary ELA Academic Coach. 20 yrs in Texas education. 6th grade - college freshman comp.
Q1: How often do you get to the publishing stage of the writing process? What are ways you publish student work?
A1 Guilty of not doing much "publishing." Recently started read aloud days where students share work or part of it with class
A1: Sorry I'm late: Lisa from FL - MS ELA & Inclusion I like to make books of our best work using https://t.co/7S0aFe7xF3
Q2: Do your students create writing portfolios? What do you do with them?
A2: We keep portfolios that I sue at parent conferences, reflections, & a big publishing project @ the end of yr.
A2 I keep a file folder of their writing, which we analyze a few times throughout the year looking for strengths, weaknesses
I remember doing something similar in middle school and really enjoying it
There are a few of these publishing companies out there like studentreasures - nice but pricey. Blurb is less.
A2: My Ss always like seeing their work in a "real" book! :)
Neato! Who covers the costs? You? or students/parents?
Q3: Are there opportunities at school for students to publish work? Newspaper? Literary magazine? Yearbook?
I always ask parents first and then find some money for those who cannot afford it.
A3 Working on getting a writing club/newspaper/literary magazine club started for next year!
A3: We have a yearbook but it's a class so there's really no authentic campus publication to publish - we should fix that!
Asking for a co-worker- has anyone used to have MS level Ss post book reviews for an authentic audience?
A3: No. Def a need. Would love for a teacher at each campus I work with to take this on.
I have never done this b/c I'm chicken as to what the kids might write that I can't "un-do" if necessary.
A2: Have used folder to keep all writing. Ss revisit/revise by choice. Use to teach revising & editing w/ Ss own work.
I never have but I read a lot of YA lit and see reviews written on there by teens. Great idea!
Can also make quizzes and add favorite quotes
Q4: How do you find other audiences for and get responses to student work?
A2: what more can Ts/Ss do with digital writing portfolios after the year ends? cc:
A4 I haven't tried it out yet, but looks like an awesome way to do that!
A4: I try to find/create contests.
Any interest in joining a HS text set and prompt swap? If so, message or tweet me. Get 4 in return for your 1!
Digital writing portfolios can be helpful for students to use a model for future writing assignments
Q5: Have you used blogging in your classroom or entered student work in contests? Share your experiences.

A district I was in had English teachers keep samples and put in a folder. Folder given to S for graduation.
A5 Very involved with Scholastic contest through Philly 2 students were local winners this year!
I'm not sure if I can ensure they get edited or not...

A5: used blogging with ms Ss during various PBL projects. Didn't see much traffic, so Ss were disappointed.

A2: digital writing portfolios - they reread their work & reflect on a chart & also complete midyear & end of yr reflection.

Love this idea. I've used 's ideas from Writing Circles but need to do more. Groups pick one to share w/ class.

Maybe pair up with another classroom for something like this? I'm sure someone in our group would be interested
Thanks for chatting with us tonight. Next week's chat: end of yr . See you on 5/10 at 8pm EST
Happy Teacher Appreciation Day, Y'all!
We’re already planning for next year. could you take a few minutes to give us some feedback? https://t.co/R1oGAVISD9
A4: just asked other teachers if we could present to their classes. are excited!
I've always felt overwhelmed by keeping portfolios. Do your Ss keep digital ones on google?
I haven't made the digital leap yet with that
Awesome idea! Sharing with lower grades is always fun
I highly recommend Writing Circles if you haven't read it. MS/HS appropriate - lots of ideas!
In MS we wrote children's stories and went back to our elementary school to read them
& anyone else interested in a HS Text Set and Prompt Swap follow me, like this tweet, & I'll message you with info
yes, mine do. Easy access. I need 2 outline a better model for them 2 organize their pieces.
Cool! I'd love to use google docs &try this next year. Plz share organization tips!
Oh sorry, I was just giving some input off the one tweet I saw. Happy chatting!
