Good evening folks :) Nic in South Yorks leading tonight- say hello and tell us where you are
-
Luke Horton, NQT from Baaaaaaarnsley
-
Ha ha hello you :) All welcome. Have you seen the article we're discussing- V Interesting! We do intro's first
-
Evening I hope everyone is well :)
-
Had a read while I had a break from assessment :/ Juggling and for the next half hour
-
-
Pleasure to have your company 😊 been quiet recently- our American pals are mad busy so might just be us 😉
-
Am here and perked up! Took a 5 min cat nap meow meow :)
-
naps are awesome! I had one earlier too zzzzzzzzzzzz
-
I am finding a quick nap so necessary! Especially as the days are so crazy busy- I can't help it!
-
poor you! I don't even have the excuse of being busy... i just like to nap haha
-
It would be nice to have time for a nap, the guilt grabs me as soon as I hit my mattress
-
Even better!! :) How are you tonight?!
-
No guilt!! :) Good to take time and care for yourself! Otherwise crash and burn! :)
-
Unrelated- sort of- are the English known for their guilt? :) cc Just wondering if this is a "thing"!
-
side note Luke- American here so I miss things in translation on occasion! :)
-
I'm well thanks! Disappointed by the rain and miserable weather but had a brilliant holiday so can't complain
-
hi I'm sooooooo happy, have my reports all done
-
So the article talks about utilising our teaching time and asking what we do that we could 'abandon' Q1- Time- Calendar- to do?
-
So my sarcasm won't go down well then? Haha
-
I am on board with most of that now I think!! haha! :)
-
I saw that!! Jealous!! :) About to start mine tonight in a massive cram session!
-
Hello sorry- dishing up tea and typing- arghhhh! How are you?
-
"Calendar time" is/was almost a religion here in America- same there?
-
in fairness I crammed mine into the weekend in a panic!
-
We've GOT to go through the timetable first thing, or I lose more time from "What are we doing after this?" all day
-
did you travel or just relax at home?!
-
Hii Heidi glad you here- am trying to eat and lead- need cat nap too!
-
I saw bc of your trip!! :) Yay you for getting it done!!
-
Agree the schedule is a "must do" each day. Children need it to stay calm for sure!
-
no worries :) I'm good thanks, you?
-
haaha yes! NO worries! A quick cat nap perked me right up!
-
now just portfolios, new parent induction & graduation to go
-
Luke works with me- so great to have him with us tonight- he teaches the 'big' ones ;)
-
had a little trip over to the west coast of scotland. It was beautiful!
-
-
Oh well then I will swoon over Luke! :) Anyone w you must be fab!
-
omg that is just gorgeous!! What a beautiful place!!
-
So besides schedule, what other "must-do's" are a part of your morning routine?
-
And a side q: what is most effective way you've found to teach calendar?
-
Pupils selecting their own dinners, asking what's happened since yesterday, sharing what's happened for me
-
Hello- whoop whoop- cheers to you. I love that epic reports done feeling!
-
I do their "news"-they LOVE- just sharing own news, stories- can take forever so then I use the "turn/tell"
-
self-registration is important & then discussing who is off etc.
-
-
RT self-registration is important & then discussing who is off etc.
-
Article talks about date stuff & day of week- pointless to talk about daily- but run of day essential? timetable displayed?
-
as in days of the week? I draw M-F on a board & we talk about what happens each day 1/2
-
I get a class calendar in January and we write all of our birthdays on it
-
book bags away, last toilet run then get to the carpet to find out the warm up activity!
-
Yes! I also do a chant: "5 days school, 2 days no school" And a: one day, Monday, Two's day Tuesday, etc w my fingers!
-
I should do those more in the morning- circle games.... always need to be doing those!!
-
you know the story The big bad wolf & 7 little kids?
-
Yes! Daily schedule essential for sure! I approach calendar when chats erupt about earth, sun, planets, etc
-
-
I call the kids Mon, Tues etc. another way to introduce days of the week!
-
No! Ooo What's that one?! :)
-
Agree some calendar sharing important- Do we need to know everyday in February it's February?
-
Calendar is actually a hugely complex thing if you think about it! Not easy concept to get!
-
it's nice but I don't feel essential - they write it daily and it's covered in numeracy teaching
-
I think people latch on to the verbiage of calendar routines, often haven't really thought about what are actually doing...
-
Should say another way- it's often a mindless daily routine vs a complex discussion of the earth's rotation and time keeping :)
-
it's such a ridiculous concept. Why do some have 31 and others 30? No rhyme or reason to it
-
I like that and does it build on what they did yesterday? Ooooh I am buzzing with ideas now :)
-
Agree- but when meaningful and linked to first hand experiences- good but habit just because?
-
I used a calendar wheel for awhile- showed that it went around vs linear- like the planets- very helpful!!
-
Mindless habit so often! Plants, earth, days of week, seasons, months go around. Only thing linear is the years!
-
haha that's "planets" not plants! Though they do too! :)
-
-
Oh I will have to look into this!!
-
YEP- ignore my last tweet- that's what I meant to say- ha ha ha!
-
-
Did England go crazy for silent reading time the way America did? It was HUGE for a long time- still is in places!
-
YEP and the weather!!!!!! Sorry missed this earlier
-
I disagree with point 4, I think reading for pleasure is underemployed if anything
-
Yes! There is so much in the weather vs "rain" or "sun" the end! Started looking at jet streams, maps, etc!
-
Yep and WHY? How can you tell if they are? ? I guess if class text you can check comprehension-DULL
-
Agree reading is important in class but it became such a "go to" that it got a bit saturated here...!
-
Would agree to an extent but does it have to be in silence? Can we paired- share with class?
-
it was more popular when I was in primary school myself (all ten years ago) than it is now
-
I actually think choral/paired reading is soooo under used and THE most effective strategy for young readers
-
Yes! That was all the rage then!!
-
Not at all, needs to be time made for conversations about what they are reading
-
About to start new guided reading method in our school- quick fire, exciting and all about understanding of text
-
Paired and choral reading gives student immediate feedback and allows built in self correction- super effective for readers
-
And I can't wait, finally get to see it tomorrow
-
Say more? What do you mean? I can never seem to get to "guided reading"- too busy managing :)
-
Using exciting text extracts & really pulling them apart together time for discussion, vocab meaning, author choice of words etc
-
YEP-they LOVE to talk about what they can see and what is happening- essential for developing understanding
-
Yes!! And it's the most underused strategy IMHO! :) And the most effective!
-
We all have been- 1-1 reading too much time. We had pleasure of seeing it in action in another school...
-
Another thing that was all the rage in America was "reading logs"- I somehow avoided the craze! was that a thing there too?
-
You all share an extract- exciting and can be above current reading level. You then read, discuss, pick apart together
-
sounds good!! I like it!!!
-
It was another thing to lose when I was at school
-
Giving children the skills to ask deeper questions of a text and understand what they read- it's fab-any age group too
-
haa- yes! awful right?! So glad I missed that boat! :)
-
RT Giving children the skills to ask deeper questions of a text and understand what read- it's fab-any age group too
-
It's been very interesting- I am being observed delivering tomorrow- eeeek!
-
You will be wonderful Nic!! I'd love to see you in action!! :)
-
And thanks for bringing your colleague tonight!! I love that!! :)
-
could always film it... I'm in so much trouble tomorrow for saying that
-
Ok how do we feel about taking away pupils break/recess time as punishment? P5 in article
