A1: Hey all, Chris, MS principal from Farmington. March is a month where I am reflecting on the past few months, supporting and thriving in the now, and heavily planning for next year already. #mnlead
Matt Carlstrom - DRHS, SS teacher… March is when Track Starts! It’s MN HS Winter Sports trny’s, It’s the 1st month of Spring… Although, MN doesn’t really pay attention to that. ;-) Kids are coming out of their Winter Coma’s LOL #mnlead
Glad to be here. Sundays have been busier for me this winter, so I haven't made as many #mnlead chats as I would have liked. Always miss them and how they help jump start my weekly mindset.
A1) We have more control over our own lives (and our Ss lives) than we sometimes realize. We can choose to sit and wait for the good things to happen, or we can MAKE the good things happen. #mnlead
A1: My first thought is... I am the sole person in charge of me... I make things better or worse by my thoughts and actions. All the people / students I meet are just, "Friends I don't know yet!" #mnlead
And it is awesome in the literal sense of the word...on many days I'm filled with awe at the major responsibility I have, but also at the incredible experiences I am lucky enough to be a part of. #mnlead
A1) It's your building, classroom, lunch room, gym, hallway....make it the most positive place you can. Lead by example and others will follow. #mnlead
A1: It's not my way to pick kids to serve, rather I work to ensure that every student's experience at school is one that they'd be willing to ride a school bus in the middle of winter with only a hooded sweatshirt to get to. :) #mnlead
A1) We have more control over our own lives (and our Ss lives) than we sometimes realize. We can choose to sit and wait for the good things to happen, or we can MAKE the good things happen. #mnlead
Honestly- if you want to pick and choose which kids you serve-education may not be the place for you. EVERY child needs us- in different ways. It’s our job to figure out how to best meet each child’s needs and help them grow- we can create the environment for that!#mnlead
So true @jenhegna we have the power to love them up. Many of the Students are starving for positive attention. I try and provide that. It’s a delicate balance though. #mnlead
A1. We don’t get to choose our kids. Sometimes they can be challenging, but we always have a choice in how we serve them. We love them, build them up and never give up on them. #MNLEAD
A1 There’s a famous quote I’ve got up over my desk, of course I cant remember it now…But the essence is, that we as teachers set the Culture, the Weather in R rooms. We can pick a kid up or knock them down w/ a word or look… Be aware of that power, and use it for good #mnlead
A1: Kendy from Texas jumping in a little late! It means that EVERY kid is treated with equity & has boundless opportunities to learn & succeed because the whole campus community believes anything is possible! High expectations & even more support to meet them! #mnlead
A1: First thing that comes to mind for me is that we have power to control only ourselves. Are we contributing to a positive environment and culture? If not how can we expect our staff and Ss to? #mnlead
A2- Everyone participating in a morning meeting; work around relationships & PBIS; school celebrations; check & connect; promoting school pride and bldg hashtag/motto; and just being focused on relationships! #mnlead
A1.2) I think this quote also helps me to see the power of letting go of things I can't control as well. I That's important for educators, because often we struggle with that. I can't control what happens to my Ss outside of my school, and that is difficult to accept. #mnlead
A2) I follow the lead of @PrincipalFrench and try to make a daily #GoodNewsCallOfTheDay. Also, just be out and about. Greet students and staff in the morning, eat lunch with kids, have conversations in the hallway, and visit the classrooms. #mnlead
A2 - Our school has an amazing amount of activities for students. We just finished our school wide competition. About 2000 people attended and got involved. Personally, I make the class all about students and never about me. #mnlead
A2: At Battle Creek we start each day with Morning Circle... We ask every member of our entire community... How are you today? Then, we each give our a response on a scale of 1-10. Carin for EVERYONE makes a great community. We start all staff meetings this way too! #mnlead
A2) Students need to be connected in a way that makes them feel welcoming and wanted. It’s up to teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, lunch servers and bus drivers to rally around all kids and make it a positive school climate. #mnlead
A2 I think is smaller schools where kids have been going to school together “forever”, but that can be both good and bad… We work hard to connect w/ every kid. Ever S should have at least 1 adult they feel connected too. #mnlead
A2) Well we have a class called "Connect" (it's our advisory period). The goal is to have every student build a strong connection with at least 1 teacher throughout high school. #mnlead
A2) At #TES all our T's have daily mtgs with their classes for time to share with each other. This year we've had quite a few classes participate in a "morning mixup" where S's from different grades meet in w/T's for a lesson and discussion. #mnlead
A2: I think connection is easier on a smaller scale. Ts to student, Ss to Ss. We can do all the big fun stuff as a school but those in the shadows will remain there, try to talk to all my kids, find out what they are up to and what their interests are. Start small go big. #mnlead
A2: It starts with me greeting all 13 buses each day, outside. Ss then have a multi-age looping advisory called Tiger Connections that focuses solely on relationships...and that's just the first 2o minutes of the day....#mnlead
A2.1 I work hard to treat Ss the way I want to be treated… Laugh often, work hard and be respectful. We talk about #growthmindset often and being “Gooder” @kidpresident#mnlead
A2) Focus on Relationships! Make time for conversations, smile, ask questions, care, say good morning! When staff and staudents feel connected...amazing things can happen. #mnlead
A2 Cont.) I am really interested in the idea of starting Eagle Families next year so that every student builds a strong connection with at least one faculty member!! #mnlead
A2 if you want to have fun tomorrow pick a couple students that need a little “love” and write them a note on their desk. Oh yeah it works for staff also! Little things build culture. #schoolwallstalk check it out! #mnlead
A2.2) Best part of Connects is "Battle of Connects" in the fall that pits advisories and grade against each other in friendly competition and food shelf donations. It's a full half-day experience and our students LOVE it. Great relationship builder. #mnlead
A3) I think the leader has to model the culture he/she desires to see. I work hard to build relationships, visit classrooms, and give feedback to my T's as often as I can. T's can do the same with their S's. #mnlead
My superintendent makes a point to visit and ask kids what they are working on during school visits. An assistant super came in and worked side by side. Principal comes in all the time, talks to kids in the hall. You can't hide in shadows if the lights are always on haha #mnlead
Please sign up to lead a #mnlead chat. It doesn't matter where you live or work. We are all about shared leadership. We help you all the way.

A3 I set high expectations for students by showing them I believe they are capable of doing what they want to accomplish - understanding that someone else believes they can achieve their goal helps empower them! #mnlead
A3 Students will either reach to be better or drop and have more poorly… Your expectations set that Bar High or Low. Telling Ss “I believe in you” carries a lot of power. #mnlead
A3: Live what you want to see. We talk growth mindset we need to not use assessments that are counter to that cause. We want to talk community maybe we stop isolating some for recognition while others are always waiting for theirs. We need to do not just say. #mnlead
A3: I really think the whole school community has to be on board with either the philosophy or mission of the school. Tying this mission solely to student learning is a mistake. It’s up to all stakeholders to be part of a great cultural mindset and solution in the school. #mnlead
A3) As much as possible I engage students in helping to define the expectations in the first place. It's about every learner in the room and what they need. #mnlead
A3) For anyone in #mnlead using Marzano's observation/evaluation tool, D.Q. 10 has 3 elements that are specific to supporting reluctant learners. Worth the time to review those elements.
A3: I really think the whole school community has to be on board with either the philosophy or mission of the school. Tying this mission solely to student learning is a mistake. It’s up to all stakeholders to be part of a great cultural mindset and solution in the school. #mnlead
A3: If it's my expectations, then buy in is optional. We work collaboratively to talk about what is critical to our culture and where we can be flexible. In order for Ss to grow and understand limits, they need to be given zones of grey to operate in. #mnlead
A3. My students know they are being PUSHED and not just NUDGED a the time and they come back to be pyshed whenever they feel the connection is breaking loose #mnlead
A3: To me it’s all about modeling what my expectations are Meeting the expectations myself! If my expectation is that students resolve conflicts with their peers in a positive way, then staff needs to do the same! Our daily pledge helps keep us grounded in that. #mnlead
A3: I really think the whole school community has to be on board with either the philosophy or mission of the school. Tying this mission solely to student learning is a mistake. It’s up to all stakeholders to be part of a great cultural mindset and solution in the school. #mnlead
A3.1 I also think a key element here is being authentic. Ts and Admin’s have to set this in way that is “theirs”. Kids and Ts have highly attuned BS meters. Be real. What works for me, may not work next door. #mnlead
Absolutely agree!!! Our mission is always to support student learning but "learning" isn't just content. Being good human beings is equally important to what we do in school #mnlead

A2: Sharing things that I love with my students- @cusehoops, @hellokitty#obsession, family stories, and being genuinely interested in what they had to share, lays the foundation for connectedness #MNLead
Yes. I don't think any leaders put plans into motion to negatively impact their staff and students but sometimes it is that one more thing on the plate that pushes some to give up. Is what we are doing worth it? And if so we might need to ask what we need to remove #mnlead
And only promise what you can follow through on...I used to try to please everyone by saying yes then let them down when I'd forget or not do it as fast as they expected. #mnlead
A4) I keep my moral up by being a member of #PrincipalsinAction. Office work can wait. Get out and be with the kiddos during the day. Smiles, High Fives, and Changing Lives!! #mnlead
A4) I try and exercise 5 or 6 times/week after work. I read as much as I can and stay relevant w/trends in education. Always find one thing each day to take home w/me and count it as a win!!! #mnlead
A4) I think treating everyday as a new opportunity is a good practice - I can't control what happened in the past, but I can start fresh everyday with my students and begin the day on a high note #mnlead
A4 My morale is up when I get into classrooms with students and staff, when I am in the cafeteria and at recess, and when I get a chance to ride a bus with the kids. #MNLEAD
We never see the “finished products” at the middle level. But I have seen the successes later down the road. It’s been rewarding for me to see this. #mnlead
A4- Tweet the positive, employee of Week in blog/social media, keeping our “why” visible, and celebrating the successes. Oh, and a random jeans day in the winter! #MNLEAD
A4: always stay positive on the outside - cheerlead students and staff in the moment and in private. Make sure the walls are covered in the right messages and student work - and be solution oriented! #mnlead
A4: Every Sunday I send out The Weekly Memo... I look at this as an opportunity to sing the praise of staff and let them know that THEY do matter and I notice and appreciate their contribution from kitchen to... teacher... to custodian to... the office #mnlead
A4) I travel and when not traveling I'm making plans to travel. New experiences energize me and make me hungry to learn more about the world (at its people) in general. That pays off as an educator in big ways. #mnlead
A4) giving staff a voice in decisions when possible and surprise treats (usually chocolate) help too! To me morale is high when people know they are appreciated! #mnlead
A4: Back to Q1, We are in charge of us and our focus. Morale is the most annoying term to me because I think it is often used as a shield to complain instead of problem solve, not happy? what are YOU doing. That Q is important. It has changed my perspective #mnlead
A3: This one is tough. I don't always get what I expect, despite working hard to project/model it. Maybe I'm not always being authentic #MaybeItsMe#MNLead
Also important for students to remember the connections and positive relationships with teachers, we remember that much more deeply than we do academic content #mnlead
This is good. The whole building doesn't need to know if you're having a bad day or a bad hour. Keeping everyone moving forward might mean "faking it" now and then. #mnlead
A4: always stay positive on the outside - cheerlead students and staff in the moment and in private. Make sure the walls are covered in the right messages and student work - and be solution oriented! #mnlead
A4. Teaching is not my hobby or my professional choice , it's what I am ,who I am and always will be ...so the days am low and dejected...I so my self talk and this is what I come up with...ITS ALWAYS WORKED . #mnlead
A4) By being a positive person... we need to be authentic both when we are around students as well as in the staff lounge. Surround yourself around positive people. #mnlead
A4 My quickest way to make positive things happen is walk through the Kindergarten hall. My cup is filled that I go spread that to everyone else. It's hard not to smile and share joy. #joyfulleaders#mnlead
A4 For me, it’s working to always be cognizant of how “I am” good or bad, will effect my kids. I had Ts and coaches who only focused on the negative, and I remember how that felt… I don’t want to be that T. #PMAED Positive Mental Attitude Every Day! #mnlead
A4: I keep my morale up by celebrating the little victories, being on campus as much as possible to interact w/ Ts & Ss, making positive calls home for Ss & staff, posting celebration sticky notes from staff on my office door. #mnlead
A4) I think treating everyday as a new opportunity is a good practice - I can't control what happened in the past, but I can start fresh everyday with my students and begin the day on a high note #mnlead
I like this. Buy in is optional if it's just one person's expectation (mine). If the expectations are created together, then the buy in will be greater for staff and students #MNLead
A3: If it's my expectations, then buy in is optional. We work collaboratively to talk about what is critical to our culture and where we can be flexible. In order for Ss to grow and understand limits, they need to be given zones of grey to operate in. #mnlead
Yes! We all can fall in the trap of finding the negative, but it's up to EACH of us to change it. We switch the narrative. We solve the problems. Too often "culture" can look for someone to "blame." We need to own the space we create. #mnlead
I have to say... for me, walking through the kindergarten hall is an immediate picker upper! I also find great value in authentic learning at any age! #mnlead
A4: So here comes not so Minnesota Nice. The first part of the statement is blind to the inherit privilege that exists in our society....for some regardless of drive. We do choose or morale if we are given success and failure in some sort of balance. #MNLEAD
Shared this quote at my faculty meeting this week. Talked about the importance of supporting each other - we are a team! I shared an example of how much I appreciated the team that helped me work through a student situation this past week. Lean on each other...#mnlead
A4). Sometimes I just need to close my door & regroup... other times what I need is time with kids to remind myself why I love this profession! #mnlead
A4 My quickest way to make positive things happen is walk through the Kindergarten hall. My cup is filled that I go spread that to everyone else. It's hard not to smile and share joy. #joyfulleaders#mnlead

A4. I focus on three things that well and one thing we need to work on at the end of each work day. I start my next day off with writing 2 notes to Staff that are very personalized called TWO A Days by @casas_jimmy they work #mnlead
Try to keep everything in perspective as opportunities can come along when I least expect them or from sources I don't expect them to come from. #mnlead
That is a really good point. Those who do not have the same privileges (inherent or not) may not have the same choices we do about mindset. If you have only known failure, the mountain is much taller. #mnlead
A4) I've worked hard this year to build team activities within my staff mtgs. The last 2 mtgs we've brought student work and the learning goal for the work and talked about proficiency. Listening to me=overrated. Listening to each=teamwork #mnlead

Do you have a talented writer in your classroom? There's a publishing company for teens right in our backyard. Come see "Putting the Power of Publishing in the Hands of Teen Writers" with Rachel and Justin Anderson from @rmapublicity at the #mnitem conference. #mnlead
A2) We printed photos of all 850 of our Ss and had Ts take the photos of students they had a connection with. Not only was it eye opening but it gave us an opportunity to identify an adult advocate for students who were lacking connectedness #mnlead

A4: I started catching them doing something good, and tried to write one note (email) home a night. The responses back were amazing. #GetWhatYouGive#MNLead
It starts with you. If it makes people feel good, they will try. If you have someone you trust, tell them what you're thinking and why. Good ideas spread. #mnlead
I know you guys are all regulars at this time. Next week I am moderating my first chat for #SRLedchat with @LevineWrites if you are two chats at a time folks here is the info.
I’d love to explore what that looks, sounds, feels like. One of my fav things about kdg is that we are able to accept when a child is “not there yet” and support him/her to get “there.” Harder in higher grades sometimes to do that.
A5) Keeping a positive classroom/school culture and creating a community within your classroom makes these conversations easier because students feel their voice is able to be heard by their teacher/peers #mnlead
Q5 In light of recent situations, we have to have hard conversations that aren't always pleasant. How does culture factor into these situations at your school?
We did something like this a few years ago… We put the names of every S on tag board and hung them up, then each S went through an initialed who they felt “connected” with. Those w/ 0 initials, we made a point to focus on. #mnlead
A2) We printed photos of all 850 of our Ss and had Ts take the photos of students they had a connection with. Not only was it eye opening but it gave us an opportunity to identify an adult advocate for students who were lacking connectedness #mnlead
I started this too. I did it with a sub on Thursday. She started crying. Said no one has ever done it before in her years as a sub. It matters. #mnlead
That is a really good point. Those who do not have the same privileges (inherent or not) may not have the same choices we do about mindset. If you have only known failure, the mountain is much taller. #mnlead
A5) Part of a strong culture is trust and feeling safe in the environment you create in your classroom/school. Safety creates strong conversations w/both sides allowed to share. That equals growth and knowledge #mnlead
Q5 In light of recent situations, we have to have hard conversations that aren't always pleasant. How does culture factor into these situations at your school?
A5 - Two schools of thought on this. I think there has to be dialogue, especially with older students. But, I’ve witnessed teachers bring their own opinions into the conversation. It’s a balance. #mnlead
Q5 In light of recent situations, we have to have hard conversations that aren't always pleasant. How does culture factor into these situations at your school?
A5: Speaking our own truth takes TRUST and trust must be a deep part of school culture. Without truth you can't have courageous conversations that represent ALL members of the community. #mnlead
The school "system" slowly but surely removes authentic opportunities for children to create, wonder, and be curious. The "there" is different for everyone and recognized, celebrated too seldom beyond early education. #mnlead
I’d love to explore what that looks, sounds, feels like. One of my fav things about kdg is that we are able to accept when a child is “not there yet” and support him/her to get “there.” Harder in higher grades sometimes to do that.
A5: An established + culture is one that trust is key. In the hard times a staff that trust their admin will be the foundation to support them. A staff that doesn't trust, a culture that is not healthy makes those conversations ineffective at best and damaging at worst. #mnlead
Q5 In light of recent situations, we have to have hard conversations that aren't always pleasant. How does culture factor into these situations at your school?
A5 I think being honest is the best bet… Kids are bringing it up for a reason… Maybe they don’t feel comfortable bringing it up at home, maybe they want to talk about it, maybe they want a different lens… Sometimes it’s hard and sometimes it’s risky. Do it anyways #mnlead
It has to be a balance!!! S's will always ask you what you think but that doesn't mean what you think has to be what they think. Both sides must be shared openly and honestly. #mnlead
A5 - Two schools of thought on this. I think there has to be dialogue, especially with older students. But, I’ve witnessed teachers bring their own opinions into the conversation. It’s a balance. #mnlead
A5) Any difficult conversation will be extra difficult if a strong culture isn't there to provide a foundation of trust. If that trust and good-will are not there to begin with, things will probably get messy. #mnlead
A3) We have a motto “here we grow”. We create rigorous learning experiences for Ts, growth is inevitable. Student data drives our conversations around high expectations for Ss! #mnlead#educoach
A5: Our school is the a small community, in fact larger than the average town in MN. That being said we all have a responsibility to contribute in a way that makes it better and to be an UPSTANDER when what we experience is not what we deserve. #mnlead
A5 Be honest. Share how you think. Prepare others with tools for having these conversations. If a teacher is having a hard time calling a parent, help them. No one ever got good at anything until they practiced. #mnlead
For all those who inquired, here is the list of LGBTQIA picture books I incorporated into my presentation. All books can be found on @amazon of your local library! Questions⁉️ Contact me! ⚠️Please SHARE!!⚠️ #LGBTQIA#WeNeedDiverseBooks@diversebooks@ncte@LGBTfdn

And I think that has to be a part of the discussion as well.. And we can Model how to respectfully disagree and still be “good”. Right now Ss are not seeing much modeling of respectful dialogue. @MrHustvedt and I took a workshop on #respectfuldialogue#mnlead
The NJH media center is set up with #MakerSpace items at every table from our collection and from items brought in. Spend a session or four exploring and tinkering to see what this Making is all about. I will host a Making tour for the first session. Come join us! #mnitem#mnlead
Hard conversations are a part of growing and learning. When there is a foundation of trust and students know you truly care and have their best interests at heart...these conversations become easier. #mnlead
Q5 In light of recent situations, we have to have hard conversations that aren't always pleasant. How does culture factor into these situations at your school?
A6) Build relationships with my staff, build relationships with the S's in my building, share what's new or what's happening with my parents through weekly newsletter. Be transparent #mnlead
I’ve sometimes felt DEEPLY uncomfortable sharing my personal feelings bc I want very much to avoid indoctrination. I gravitate more toward how Ss can best care for selves & others, support their opinions w solid research & respectful communication. So tricky sometimes. #mnlead
A6) I work out of our school's media center, and last week a teacher said that the space was like our school's community center. I loved that she and her students feel that way! Convos, student input, smiles, helpfulness, all go a long way. #mnlead
A5: leading with what we have agreed is best for our school and kids if it is staff. I've had a hard one with a parent lately who had a lot of animosity towards me and it's caused a lot of issues. Keep coming back to "this isn't how we work together for kids" #mnlead
Totally agree. S's develop their ideas from conversations at home. My ideas might be different but I encourage S's to visit their parents more than with me. I educate but parents raise them. #mnlead
A6) greet students by name everyday, asking how his/her day has gone, inquire about the book(s) they are currently reading, say please and thank you, point out positive behavior, set high expectations, and most importantly just get to know them as a person #mnlead
A6) Relationships are key to school culture. All stakeholders in a school need to be genuine, authentic and real. Students will see right through you if your not giving them your very best every day. Remember there is always at least one student counting on you every day. #mnlead
A6 Take time to listen. Really listen. No computer or device in your hands. Eye contact and active listening. Get to know the actual person, not just the teacher side. We all influence our culture everyday. #chooseyourculture#mnlead
A6: admin that laugh with kids, high five in hallways and make room for kids to stumble and then help them back up. I have never felt like mine are not there for the kids first. When Ss and their parents know that kids are our first concern the community is stronger. #mnlead
Brought up how if we are gossiping and talking behind backs we aren't creative g a culture conducive for learning and partnerships. Still working through it with them - not always well and still a long way to go #mnlead
A6 It's important to build relationships with students, staff, and families whenever possible. Listen more than you talk. Smile a lot. Share the great things going on in your school. #MNLEAD
A6:
Weekly Memo
Daily Class Circles
Campus Character - Friendly & Kind, Honest & Helpful, Hopeful & Hardworking
Greet Students Daily
Visit ALL classes weekly
Take time to visit and ask... How are you?
Know parents - staff - students
LISTEN

#mnlead
Made it for the last question! Whew! A6- Being honest, transparent and making sure your goals have students at the front of each decision is a start. Being visible, playing with kids and staff...allowing yourself to be vulnerable & real are all game changers. #mnlead
A6 A close coworker does this incredibly well with middle school Ss. She knows names, is always kind, never accuses, talks through the issue and LISTENS. It’s inspiring every time I see her interact with a student. #mnlead
A6). I try to use the “relationship barometer” to figure out difficult decisions! How are our relationship with this stud, parent or staff member. If we build on the relationship the problem is half way solved! #mnlead
A6 - 20 years in the district, kids recognize me as a “go to” teacher/coach for issues. Before/After School, Lunch, Prep, Text etc… That’s a responsibility I humbly accept and understand it has risks. But kids need someone to… share/vent/cry/laugh with. #NoJudgment#mnlead
Very tricky. When I taught I started tough conversations with, "this is my opinion" and I always made sure that differing opinions be heard. Never tried to sell my thoughts but also felt obliged to let S's hear both sides #mnlead

We help you the entire way. Love new topic ideas. All are welcome!
Thanks for letting me jump in #mnlead fun chat. I want to keep building culture by getting into other classrooms and celebrating the greatness that is my school, the students, coworkers and admin.
A5: Great question as I will be working w/ schools in Puerto Rico this wk to address issues of safety & positive behaviors by emphasizing engagement & importance of relationships. #mnlead
