  • chris_bussmann Feb 25 @ 8:10 PM EST

  • bretdom - Moderator Feb 25 @ 8:10 PM EST
So true! I have a question asking about that later too. We control ourselves, and that's all we can control. Start there. #mnlead

    In reply to @BradLatzke
  • millardamy2 Feb 25 @ 8:11 PM EST
Honestly- if you want to pick and choose which kids you serve-education may not be the place for you. EVERY child needs us- in different ways. It’s our job to figure out how to best meet each child’s needs and help them grow- we can create the environment for that!#mnlead
  • KevinSayerska Feb 25 @ 8:11 PM EST
So true @jenhegna we have the power to love them up. Many of the Students are starving for positive attention. I try and provide that. It’s a delicate balance though. #mnlead

A1 - Every child deserves a chance to be respected, cared for and empowered. #mnlead

  • mcarlstromDR Feb 25 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1 There’s a famous quote I’ve got up over my desk, of course I cant remember it now…But the essence is, that we as teachers set the Culture, the Weather in R rooms. We can pick a kid up or knock them down w/ a word or look… Be aware of that power, and use it for good #mnlead
  • jenhegna Feb 25 @ 8:13 PM EST
    LOVE it! #mnlead
    In reply to @SlaterPBISMN
  • PrincipalHardin Feb 25 @ 8:13 PM EST

A1: First thing that comes to mind for me is that we have power to control only ourselves. Are we contributing to a positive environment and culture? If not how can we expect our staff and Ss to? #mnlead
  • rrv_mary Feb 25 @ 8:14 PM EST

A2) connecting every day with Ss, Ts, and families. Visible, positive, present #mnlead
  • mcarlstromDR Feb 25 @ 8:16 PM EST
The fastest way to change students behavior is control and if need be change our own behavior. #mnlead
    In reply to @bretdom, @Craig_SPPS
  • amythuesen Feb 25 @ 8:16 PM EST
A1.2) I think this quote also helps me to see the power of letting go of things I can't control as well. I That's important for educators, because often we struggle with that. I can't control what happens to my Ss outside of my school, and that is difficult to accept. #mnlead
  • SaccoEric Feb 25 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2) I follow the lead of @PrincipalFrench and try to make a daily #GoodNewsCallOfTheDay. Also, just be out and about. Greet students and staff in the morning, eat lunch with kids, have conversations in the hallway, and visit the classrooms. #mnlead
  • rrv_mary Feb 25 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2) I focus on kindness as often as I can... hopefully in my actions & interactions w/ students, staff & parents... #mnlead
  • Shapiro_WTHS Feb 25 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2 - Our school has an amazing amount of activities for students. We just finished our school wide competition. About 2000 people attended and got involved. Personally, I make the class all about students and never about me. #mnlead
  • PrincipalArthur Feb 25 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2) Greeting students and staff each morning, going into classrooms as often as possible, and letting staff know they are appreciated! #mnlead
  • iwearthecrowns Feb 25 @ 8:18 PM EST
Hello #MNLead! Cathy from NYC/NJ, visiting MN for the first time next month!
  • Craig_SPPS Feb 25 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2: At Battle Creek we start each day with Morning Circle... We ask every member of our entire community... How are you today? Then, we each give our a response on a scale of 1-10. Carin for EVERYONE makes a great community. We start all staff meetings this way too! #mnlead
  • KevinSayerska Feb 25 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2) Students need to be connected in a way that makes them feel welcoming and wanted. It’s up to teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, lunch servers and bus drivers to rally around all kids and make it a positive school climate. #mnlead
  • mcarlstromDR Feb 25 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2 I think is smaller schools where kids have been going to school together “forever”, but that can be both good and bad… We work hard to connect w/ every kid. Ever S should have at least 1 adult they feel connected too. #mnlead
  • amythuesen Feb 25 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2) Well we have a class called "Connect" (it's our advisory period). The goal is to have every student build a strong connection with at least 1 teacher throughout high school. #mnlead
  • SaccoEric Feb 25 @ 8:19 PM EST
Love when I walk into a classroom having a morning meeting!! #mnlead
    In reply to @Craig_SPPS
  • DaveWheeler11 Feb 25 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2) At #TES all our T's have daily mtgs with their classes for time to share with each other. This year we've had quite a few classes participate in a "morning mixup" where S's from different grades meet in w/T's for a lesson and discussion. #mnlead
    • bretdom - Moderator Feb 25 @ 8:13 PM EST
Q2 School culture is built on a foundation of connectedness. What ways does your school/class build this? #mnlead
  • mrbgilson Feb 25 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2: I think connection is easier on a smaller scale. Ts to student, Ss to Ss. We can do all the big fun stuff as a school but those in the shadows will remain there, try to talk to all my kids, find out what they are up to and what their interests are. Start small go big. #mnlead
    • bretdom - Moderator Feb 25 @ 8:13 PM EST
Q2 School culture is built on a foundation of connectedness. What ways does your school/class build this? #mnlead
  • chris_bussmann Feb 25 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2: It starts with me greeting all 13 buses each day, outside. Ss then have a multi-age looping advisory called Tiger Connections that focuses solely on relationships...and that's just the first 2o minutes of the day....#mnlead
  • bretdom - Moderator Feb 25 @ 8:20 PM EST
Q3 is coming up in 1 minute. #mnlead
  • mcarlstromDR Feb 25 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2.1 I work hard to treat Ss the way I want to be treated… Laugh often, work hard and be respectful. We talk about #growthmindset often and being “Gooder” @kidpresident #mnlead
  • bretdom - Moderator Feb 25 @ 8:20 PM EST
    That is a culture builder. It's like a mini-family time. Awesome! #mnlead

    In reply to @mrbgilson
  • bretdom - Moderator Feb 25 @ 8:21 PM EST
Q3 The saying "You get what you expect." sets the tone for culture. How do you set expectations for all? #mnlead
  • millardamy2 Feb 25 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2) Focus on Relationships! Make time for conversations, smile, ask questions, care, say good morning! When staff and staudents feel connected...amazing things can happen. #mnlead
  • SaccoEric Feb 25 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2 Cont.) I am really interested in the idea of starting Eagle Families next year so that every student builds a strong connection with at least one faculty member!! #mnlead
  • SlaterPBISMN Feb 25 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2 if you want to have fun tomorrow pick a couple students that need a little “love” and write them a note on their desk. Oh yeah it works for staff also! Little things build culture. #schoolwallstalk check it out! #mnlead
  • amythuesen Feb 25 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2.2) Best part of Connects is "Battle of Connects" in the fall that pits advisories and grade against each other in friendly competition and food shelf donations. It's a full half-day experience and our students LOVE it. Great relationship builder. #mnlead

Q3 The saying "You get what you expect." sets the tone for culture. How do you set expectations for all? #mnlead
  • DaveWheeler11 Feb 25 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3) I think the leader has to model the culture he/she desires to see. I work hard to build relationships, visit classrooms, and give feedback to my T's as often as I can. T's can do the same with their S's. #mnlead
    • bretdom - Moderator Feb 25 @ 8:21 PM EST

My superintendent makes a point to visit and ask kids what they are working on during school visits. An assistant super came in and worked side by side. Principal comes in all the time, talks to kids in the hall. You can't hide in shadows if the lights are always on haha #mnlead
