R1 Nxt yr. my position will be strictly digital. I look forward to helping all Ts weave the stds into the curriculum!
R1 - I envision integrating these standards as students are doing collaborative creations in class
Hi, ! Chantell, Tech Director from Angola here! Excited to chat the new CS standards with all of you tonight!
Thanks for joining tonight! It's great to have you taking part in Chat.
R1 I think we need to see more interdisciplinary projects at all levels. These stds provide an excellent springboard!
R1: It is going to be difficult. 1st Ts are going to have to learn them & 2nd I think the CS lingo can throw some for a loop
R1 Encouraging teachers to add coding activities as a choice during math/reading/writing workshop
I am excited to see what educators come up with to weave the computer science standards in with their STEM units.
R1. Working with all teachers to integrate these skills
R1 I feel like it will be simple and FUN to weave these standards into content areas. I love the hands-on practicality of it all!
R1 We were looking at developing a framework for students as they go through our schools. This provides that AND
R1: The CS standards will allow Ts to find best solution for their area. They may look different for every subject and that’s ok.
I've loved adding STEM to my Soc. St. curriculum this yr! https://t.co/sHdShG0QIj
I am excited to see what educators come up with to weave the computer science standards in with their STEM units.
R1 Also allowing students to create coding projects as artifacts of learning. I had students who created book trailers in Scratch
R1 Weaving these standards through many content areas will likely be similar to weaving in literacy and the ISTE-T standards
R1 PBL and presenting and sharing learning beyond PowerPoints/Slides will help integrate these standards
Sean, I agree. This is a whole new subject for teachers to learn!
We were looking for the same thing! Glad we have this as a guide now
Additional thought as we get started: IN has a CS teaching license for gr 9-12 will they now add one for K-8 now?
R1: Important to make sure they aren’t ignored sometimes like those literacy standards
R1 I envision the standards adding value to the integration of technology
True! Less tech savvy Ts will be intimidated reading through them https://t.co/jYuzL47FLx
R1: It is going to be difficult. 1st Ts are going to have to learn them & 2nd I think the CS lingo can throw some for a loop
I would sure hope so! It is necessary at all levels. https://t.co/vs9wxVveOd
Additional thought as we get started: IN has a CS teaching license for gr 9-12 will they now add one for K-8 now?
On top of still trying to get use to CCRS! https://t.co/qvNS1n4EmD
Sean, I agree. This is a whole new subject for teachers to learn!
Absolutely! We are all teachers of CS, Digital Citizenship, & Literacy! Good teaching means everyone is in it together!
One of the resources that we are working to develop is to break down the vocabulary so that Ts don't get stuck on just that
Q2 How can Ts be supported as they add the new CS stds into their curriculum? More info below! https://t.co/yt3Bnwc29f
This is defintely something we should keep at the top of the list https://t.co/Kqpl6BOdnW
R1: Important to make sure they aren’t ignored sometimes like those literacy standards
I think the CS Standards will be an extension of what we started in IN. It will take leaders to work. https://t.co/DLdvFHRPyP
R1 Weaving these standards through many content areas will likely be similar to weaving in literacy and the ISTE-T standards
I don't know...Having separate CS teachers might lead to teaching the standards in isolation. https://t.co/KJ3MJV2xUr
I would sure hope so! It is necessary at all levels. https://t.co/vs9wxVveOd
Additional thought as we get started: IN has a CS teaching license for gr 9-12 will they now add one for K-8 now?
Possibly a handbook for Ts at the district/building level? Interesting. https://t.co/O7yH6ek2CW
One of the resources that we are working to develop is to break down the vocabulary so that Ts don't get stuck on just that
R2: With anything else, provide training/education, support, collaborative time, and let Ts know everyone is learning.
Important Ts have support--district, building, coaches, and each other--to incorporate them. https://t.co/RxUyE4LMRr
R1: Important to make sure they aren’t ignored sometimes like those literacy standards
R2: Like anything else tap into your masters in your district are. How can this be integrated like other subjects?
R2: Extra time, more flexibility, and a great deal of patience. Ts need to make these their own and get it right.
R2 Workshops, integration support, PLN & our community.
How do you get the teachers to do these standards in class? Our teachers want them to be taught as a seperate technology class.
R2: Collaborate with you librarian to integrate classroom & CS standards
Great Q. We are going to discuss this issue in a bit for sure!
R2 It's another great opportunity for ET coaches to come alongside teachers to model!
Making sure that everyone understands the vocabulary is critical to success! Breaking it down ensures clarity!
R2 Ts will have to dive right in and explore the differences. Old vs new are available on the IDOE website. PD is key too.
R2 I wouldn't be me if I didn't mention that we should be sharing examples in the Communities of Practice https://t.co/XBEYeWxGye
and provides more accountability by eliminating that excuse!
Q3 The new stds can support tech integration in your district. What message does this send about integration and to resistant Ts?
R2:Set up collaborations of classroom Ts & librarian to integrate discipline & CS standards
R2 Culture of positive risk taking, support to try new things. Continual sharing, reflection. Not going to be 1 PD+done!
R3 I think it sends the message that IN is serious about Ss and that it's time to get on board for them!
It is fear of understanding which bringing the PD to Ts throughout the state will make these T Leaders https://t.co/lsXOzTsPv1
How do you get the teachers to do these standards in class? Our teachers want them to be taught as a seperate technology class.
R2. It provides a need for a tech. integrationist. It would be a lot for a curriculum director to tackle & train effectively.
R3 I think it takes technology integration from a "maybe if I have time" to "this is the new school"
R3 We need to really encourage those who are reluctant to have a growth mindset, be willing to learn along with the kids!
R2. We have a team creating a scope and sequence for our district and pulling together resources, lesson integ. And PD
R3 I think it's saying it's time to embrace tech. I love how our K standards center on engineering! Real world application!
Love this! https://t.co/LEtWuejYtP
R3 I think it takes technology integration from a "maybe if I have time" to "this is the new school"
Just dropping in to say hi to all my peeps - only one more week of classes and then I can enjoy my Thursday night chats again!
GREAT! It sounds like you are being very proactive. Bravo!
The Diversification of higher education around the world.
R3: It shows this isn’t a passing fad. Many Ts believe this will just blow over and they can go back to doing the same thing.
wow, you didn't waste any time!
And encourage Ts to let Ss teach them sometimes. It's okay to let them do that!
R2 focus in on specific CS and then build as comfort grows. Don't get overwhelmed thinking that I am teaching all now. Weave them
Yes! It fully brings to light the reality that all teachers are teachers of Digital Literacy, & that it is valued!
R3 Tech integration in the classroom is a vital part of educating our Ss. It's not going away, and we're all learners!
As a tech integration, I ❤️ them! It gives me a supported guide to help. I'm not just a crazy Edtech geek. It's a thing now!
Q4 The new standards will NOT be formally assessed. What ways will you as a T, school, admin want to assess these informally?
I will be teaching AP CSP next year. I am scared but being proactive in support of coding. I think this is what Ts are fearing.
I don't always fully grasp code, but my Ss code like crazy. They learn as they go and teach me! https://t.co/6hJcqjWv9J
I will be teaching AP CSP next year. I am scared but being proactive in support of coding. I think this is what Ts are fearing.
R4 I hope we develop a celebration of Ts and Ss success. Too often we evaluate standards punitively. This should be celebrated.
R4: It will be necessary that the entire school look at the best way to assess. Has to be consistent across grades and subjects.
R4. We have school "reporting" from each school at our district tech comm mtg, also PLC sharing, and part of teacher eval.
Q5 What CS standards do you think will be the most challenging to implement? How will you overcome this challenge?
R4 I think informally assessing these in a performance/project based way would be amazing! Imagine what kids can create!
Q4 I think there will be many opportunities for integrated assessments that will weave the cs standards into multi subjects
R4 They will require more authentic assessments with real-word applications.
We're on the same track, ! I would like to think that students could develop portfolios of work they are proud of
R5: I think our biggest challenge is seeing as interdisciplinary and not just something extra
I think we could treat it as a day of celebration during CS ed week & showcase S work at schools & online https://t.co/O0qGuLLBvk
R4 I hope we develop a celebration of Ts and Ss success. Too often we evaluate standards punitively. This should be celebrated.
I don't know that many people have figured out how to do student centered. It seems like a bunch of activities
I think the scariest ones for teachers will be the 3-5 standards concerning 0 and 1's. It sounds scarier than it is
Think of the virtual student showcases! Could be amazing!
R4 for students we will look to build some sort of assessment mech with our scope and sequ. - checklists... Something!
I think we should all work together to develop curriculum that is real-world authentic great opp https://t.co/ud0gUPjaQL
Q4 I think there will be many opportunities for integrated assessments that will weave the cs standards into multi subjects
Also integrated in rubrics for PBL
R4 I would love to do lots of student showcases! K kids are pretty proud of their work, and we love to show it off!
R4 Want Ts to self assess and reflect. Want Admin to support Ts through possessing a strong understanding of the standards too.
Wouldn't it be AMAZING to have digital showcase days! I can't wait!
This is an excellent idea. Great way to celebrate successes. https://t.co/HdP0Q6QNWM
Wouldn't it be AMAZING to have digital showcase days! I can't wait!
R5 The biggest challenge will be changing the mindset of CS as something additional vs ingrained in everything you do w/ our Ss
R5: Not sure that I could demonstrate 6-8.DI.4 myself right now without some instruction/exploration
Admin should set the example they want to see in their schools. Thankful mine does! https://t.co/8jFYSt19fx
R4 Want Ts to self assess and reflect. Want Admin to support Ts through possessing a strong understanding of the standards too.
I think Indiana is also in a unique position since so many of our districts are 1:1
It is critical that curriculum leaders are able to lead Ts in dialogue about backward design & creating good ?'s!
Agreed! CS isn't only a club that meets after school anymore. https://t.co/auy7BLX47F
R5 The biggest challenge will be changing the mindset of CS as something additional vs ingrained in everything you do w/ our Ss
I also think we these new standards Indiana is uniquely positioned to write for grants to support curriculum for
BAM! Just like "Digital Citizenship" is only a 1-period class." Technology is no longer an Add-On. It is part of us!
Love that saying "isn't a club that meets after school anymore "
R5 I think the biggest challenge of any of the stds will be getting all disciplines to feel accountable to them.
R5 consistency across grade levels so all students develop skills.
R5. The biggest challenge will be teaching many of the teachers. You don't know what you don't know. It will take hard work.
You are right on target here! https://t.co/AIH7zMFZF4
R5 I think the biggest challenge of any of the stds will be getting all disciplines to feel accountable to them.
Exactly! CS, digcit, tech integration itself should be woven into everything.
Q6 The INDOE wants to stress that these stds can be addressed w/ or w/out high $$ tech. How will you make your tech work for you?
This is completely true. Many will think it only applies to the tech/science classes.
I did the since it began & Ts started getting on board and Ss loved it. I got Admin involved. Resources are there.
Based on my research and recent experiences, the best way to convince Ts is thru field trips to amazing classrooms
R5 with CS standards in grade bands allows for cross grade levels to work together weaving them in and out. Positive TEAMWORK key
It's important for Ts to see that this stuff actually works! Just hearing it at conferences isn't enough. Bravo!
Seeing is believing for many. Providing authentic examples to watch on-site is a great strategy! Peer Observations
R6 I feel like these standards function well with most platforms. They mention collaboration which allows all Googlets to rejoice.
I'm fortunate that we have the tools in place to run with it. Sharing devices and creativity may be necessary for implementation.
R6 noted earlier that most INschools have access, but that often happens at secondary...makes it interesting for K-8
I LOVE visiting classrooms! I wish I could do it more often. Best PD out there.
on thing we've been doing is developing video cases of Ts who use with
R6. I'm fortunate that we have the tools in place to run with it. Sharing of devices & creativity may be necessary for success.
R6: K-5 in my district is without devices and it’s the Ts first defense. We will have to work to get Ts on board. It is important.
how many k-8 have 1:1 access? It seems like we have more than typical
R6 We have so much and are so fortunate, but there is always a wish list...
Great! Start small, build capacity, then build out. Interest grows, risks taken, Ts & Ss form CS movement https://t.co/As7ZKTPZt3
I did the since it began & Ts started getting on board and Ss loved it. I got Admin involved. Resources are there.
Q7 What Qs do you have about the new CS stds that haven’t been addressed here? Let’s discuss.
I think it is important to note that a lot of these standards are achievable by multiple means
Yes! Digital Collaboration as well as the following CS verbs: Examine, construct, design, investigate.
it's defintely increasing...soon we'll have maps to point to for exact data
Yes! Creating a repository of great technology integration examples is a must!
There are so many resources out there that it can be overwhelming for Ts.
R7. If not assessed, aren't they merely suggestions. What if a school pretends they don't exist? Could that happen in theory?
Great examples thru the lens of technology featuring collaboration, communication, etc
Hi there Diana from checking in very late tonight!
How do we as leaders and early adopters prevent this from happening? https://t.co/aNOqfBtCXN
R7. If not assessed, aren't they merely suggestions. What if a school pretends they don't exist? Could that happen in theory?
SAMR model, DOK, and blended learning are all natural ways to bring these skills into the classroom
R7 So if these standards won't be formally assessed, how will we be held accountable?
Working to develop a list of resources to prevent Ts overload. Share any great resources with us matched to CS
This seems to be the hot question. Thoughts? https://t.co/fUCkncyySS
R7 So if these standards won't be formally assessed, how will we be held accountable?
There is a CS movement & if you do not get on board you will fall behind. We will all be accountable. https://t.co/fX05c0DmdI
R7 So if these standards won't be formally assessed, how will we be held accountable?
please include me on that list! I would love to add some resources we have!
R7 To address the suggestion/accountability concerns, I'd flip it and focus on the value added to the work we've been supporting
In theory it could happen, similar to the ISTE-S standards. As leaders, it is up to us to generate the urgency CS
Absolutely! Just like when sci and soc studies is ignored on untested yrs. Educators need to value all standards
R7 These are a great guide for my work with grade levels to know what is possible
As a 6th grade Soc St. T I am in complete agreement with this! I work hard to make it relevant for my Ss. https://t.co/isMEqwQDBa
Absolutely! Just like when sci and soc studies is ignored on untested yrs. Educators need to value all standards
R7 Embeding these standards into our already exisisting pacing guides will be key and really get students creating digitally
Educators value students and cs is important for all students. It is the world around us. Self accountability
I have come across many that do not know they exist. Together, we can help to share their value!
I plan to do a lot of work in this area this summer, and I will share resources.
Q8 Wrapping it up! How will you be a positive force this week in your school/district in implementing these new stds?
How do you respond to ts that say they don't have time to plan for tech or to add to their curriculum they won't get through it
sorry I came late...can you tell me where the standards are?
R8 I am gonna think "This great info of mine, I'm gonna let it shine, let it shine, let shine, let it shine!!!"
I think the best way to to respond to Ts like this is to show that it's possible through example. https://t.co/4ous8jM5W4
How do you respond to ts that say they don't have time to plan for tech or to add to their curriculum they won't get through it
is it hard work up front? Yes! Then it's created and can be tweaked in the future.
Let that light shine and don't let anyone blow it out! https://t.co/YCQnbqPRfc
R8 I am gonna think "This great info of mine, I'm gonna let it shine, let it shine, let shine, let it shine!!!"
show them simple ways that will save them time with current practices it's about showing them value in
R8: Mine will have to start next week. We have our first eLearning day tomorrow! I’ll get info out to Ts and keep them up to date.
yeah its the work up front that I get a lot of push back on. Not enough time etc
Ask Ts how can we use technology to make what we are already doing more efficient, effective & creative! Start there
R8 How can you not be excited about the cs standards and share that excitement!? Positive chatter!
If I'm the admin, I'm looking for this as best practices in Domain2.3 in RISE
R8 I plan to encourage conversations w/ my peers to integrate and weave our curriculums together.
I found it helps to stress that you are not adding on to existing work but that it's a chance to reimagine https://t.co/gylXxTDq96
How do you respond to ts that say they don't have time to plan for tech or to add to their curriculum they won't get through it
One way to get teachers to crave tech is to show them what it can do and how it is transforming other classrooms
I almost mentioned RISE earlier. Thanks for sharing, Kevin! https://t.co/wR4eN8ki0Q
If I'm the admin, I'm looking for this as best practices in Domain2.3 in RISE
R8 I'm working on our digital bully prevention curriculum. Also, working on getting our MS STEM certified. Hello !
R8 I think a little Hour of Code for Ts might be in order. I want to show them how fun it can be!
People don't get that everything is hard work at first. Be supportive with those who will help grow the process
If you want to help IN have a positive CS implementation, email me. Team effort at DOE & can connect you https://t.co/XSRsu6yp7E
Be excited even if you have a few worries. Put a positive spin in an otherwise negative conversation! https://t.co/1b0HlOLM2p
R8 How can you not be excited about the cs standards and share that excitement!? Positive chatter!
true...I even offer to help write the curriculum and meet 1 on 1 to help them transition what they do to something new!
R8: sharing amazing examples from a wide range of easy to complex teaching practices. An entry point to inspire every T
Oh hi, Kevin from Pike High School. Forgot it was Thursday. I'm lame!
One authentic classroom example is worth more than anything! "Show them," and they will come!
We want to thank and from the INDOE for contributing to this important discussion!
R8: I also think will be key for teachers to consider these options. Those attending are already open to poss
Feel like child on Christmas Eve and can't wait to visit/help schools and see great things Ts do with CS https://t.co/uwScDlhSik
R8 How can you not be excited about the cs standards and share that excitement!? Positive chatter!
R8 Being positive is contagious! Talking about our classroom is always a way to throw a little CS talk into the convo.
Thanks for a great chat tonight, ! I am excited about the new CS standards and opportunities for our students.
Then that's an area in negotiations that should be addressed by admins and teachers alike
that's our program! undergrad program is going crazy! 23 new preservice teachers enrolled for fall
I am leaving this chat feeling even more excited for IN Ss! Thanks for all of your contributions tonight. Love this community!
I think we should readdress this in Aug or Sept to start the school year.
Thanks for joining tonight. Great experts to follow folks!
Speaking of CS. Quizlet live is an amazing quiz game for collaboration, fun, and learning. Try it.
Fabulous ideas shared this evening! The excitement is creating urgency for tech integration folks! Have a great week
