Hey there , it's John Martin from New Hampshire!
Hey, I'm here, too. I'm Tammy from Florida.
Hi We're talking about devices tonight! Pls introduce yourself & share an idea for a device you wish existed existed already.
Kory from MN. I have to think about this for a little bit, drawing a blank right now.
So many cool things on the horizon! Wonder how -ucators will adapt these tech tools for new purposes!
Hey Kory. I hear you! I was thinking of a fitbit-like device that buzzed to encourage niceness.
I'm Robin, Library Media Specialist from Wisconsin.
Linda from Bainbridge NY here
Hi Linda! Glad you're here for
Most of my ideas sound a little dull and already exist in one fashion or another.
The device I'd like is one that would enable me to blow my nose without lifting my hands from the keyboard.
We are watching the Consumer Electronics Show today over at
Talk about reading from a firehouse! https://t.co/hOUjE3bHPp
We are watching the Consumer Electronics Show today over at
Yes. It's a tweetathon out of Vegas...
Thanks for sharing that article, Michael.
hi! Shelly from TX 5th ELA/SS
Very similar to the richo theta.
I rarely think about devices. I think more "there ought to be a way to" issues.
Hey, Shelly! So glad to see you here.
Wow! Like a GoPro on steroids
. Yes! I love options & competition as they drive prices down for us!
Did anyone get a new device over the holidays or see new ones that students are bringing in?
I'm trying, but right off hand I don't see classroom application for 360 camera
I like that. Many innovations come from that type of thinking.
Hi . I think I heard you were speaking my language tonight?
Hey Sarah! What's new in your device world lately?
Hey, Sarah. We are talking about new devices. Do you have any?
. Here's an idea I'd love to see: capturing local history in immersive environments. Pair w/
Hi , if you see this before 9:30, hop on . You will love the topic.
. SARAH! Welcome home to !
Cool. Kids could create content for virtual field trips. Excellent.
It's kind of funny, for being the Innovations T, I'm not so much into devices. We don't have a heck of a lot in our house.
That's what I was thinking. Also, our Ag Teacher could create an in the field experience for Ss.
I thought I wanted an iPad Pro, but not now
I just got my GoPro up and running today. Hooray!
Hey Robin! Hoverboards are cool
What made you change your mind?
thanks so much John! Glad to be here
Haven't seen any yet here in Wisco, have you in your area?
The same thing that made me want it to begin with--the physical size. Couldn't see a need for it
I like drones and quadcopters. And 360 video
I've got my iPad 4th gen, and Chromebook (and iPhone). Those are sufficient
I'm super excited that several of my Ss got their own s recently.
That's interesting. Was talking to some1nwho was regretting their larger phone 2day. Those aspects matter 4 sure.
I'm terribly self-centered. I'm trying to see how to use a camera to teach college comp. Duh.
yes I have one. My teacher friends tease me about it lol.
I'm hearing that some of my Ss got drones as well.
I think it's so funny how the phones have gone from big to small to back to big again.
. I'd love to use it for graphic design but other than that it is a beast!
agreed. I thought I wanted a larger phone. I find myself missing my iPhone 4.
Imagine the class reading a play and being able to capture it "in the round".
I didn't even realize there was a until I saw the hashtag w/ pop up on my feed! So excited!
exactly. I thought I would do a lot with it, but the more I thought about what I did-
I love those. Hope they use them responsibly!
I love them. I now own 2 myself. My Ss will be coding with them after
the more it didn't seem to be a necessity
Evening saw you all talking gadgets and devices!
Hey Brad! What's new your world in terms of devices?
yaaaaay! Join in the fun!
Welcome. We're here every Tuesday at 8:30 pm est. (Thanks, Sarah!)
. Well come on in! And thanks for bringing a new friend to
Hi Dorian! Welcome to tonight.
yaaaay! What app will you use to code?
Q2: With so many new devices in our Ss hands, how are we going to capitalize on it in the classroom?
Hey Friend!! Good to see you again!
Many of mine did too! I brought mine in around Thanksgiving and found a large group got them for Christmas
That's awesome, Jennifer. There is still a high need for equity in terms of device access.
yaaaay! I know that's your kind of party ☺️ Jump on in!
Brad my man, how are you? Glad you swung by !
playing with 3D Pens fun and easy to create with
Neat. Which kind are you using?
Having them start on the Sphero app but moving to app of their choice for more detailed activity.
our Ss still aren't allowed to BYOD :(
not sure yet, still looking for ideas. Thinking maybe with YouTube. How about you?
. peek-2 got chromebooks. I'm still playing with drones! And looking into multi projection technology
#2: excited about getting a makey make and breakout edu! Opps!!
A2 Even tho "it's not *supposed* to b about the device" play & exploration SO important w/new tech. Creating spaces for that.
we got a couple of clickshare devices and those have been fun!
I got the kids one IDo3D 5 colors pen set
Many of the devices need bluetooth, not networking so you may be able to slip some in.
A2 With all these devices I think it's important to really encourage adaptability and problem solving w/our Ss so they can+
Yep...because otherwise people have no earthly idea...at all https://t.co/Ewbscmc7KD
A2 Even tho "it's not *supposed* to b about the device" play & exploration SO important w/new tech. Creating spaces for that.
what kinds of things can you make?
Those seem really fantastic! :)
Interesting... for Ss use?
. Share more on your multi-projection thoughts.
Great time to talk about how they were developed, responsible use, expected life change https://t.co/QCdCDg9Khv
Q2: With so many new devices in our Ss hands, how are we going to capitalize on it in the classroom?
. +figure them all out and figure out ways to make the devices work best for them.
A2: turned me on to Stikbots. Have a couple. Shelly got them for Christmas from Santa, too
yesssss you will love them!
I'm so glad you are here.
Interested in hearing more of your idea...
I forgot about the Stickbots. How could I? They are so cute.
I logged in their devices with myBYOD on tech days and then changed my password at the end of the day
living the dream brother!
Yes. Folks who overrepeat that mantra often do not meet many kids who haven't had opportunity w/new tech!
I will say this all this new technology does nothing but encourage my students and I to explore the possibilities.
A2) I have big gaps. Some kids have tablets, phones, drones, etc. but don't have reliable access to internet outside of school!
haha I meant Ss got them for Christmas!!!
A2 I would have them teach me a thing or two...and of course, each other
If Ss don't need network but use their phones, who'll know? Let them have a show and tell.
.
also heard of one that is just a web service but functions much the same as clickshare!
Yes! That's common for us, too. https://t.co/Eu0Rtle99B
A2) I have big gaps. Some kids have tablets, phones, drones, etc. but don't have reliable access to internet outside of school!
or any tech!! We had 5th graders that didn't know how to save a file online or upload
I'm game. They'd have to use their data though--we're a 4th & 5th grade campus
nodding right along here.
I won a we should start a play group with theme
. I've been looking into to help bridge some of the Internet gaps in our community.
Bluetooth doesn't use data. All good.
we have to better sell the importance/relevance of BYOD and other tech uses to our rural districts (decision makers).
. All I can see is a remix where we control each others' remotely.
Perhaps that's a possible opportunity with some discovery or exploration time at school. Possible? https://t.co/lWbqCzyPDw
A2) I have big gaps. Some kids have tablets, phones, drones, etc. but don't have reliable access to internet outside of school!
something else you and I need to put our heads together about :D
wooaah! Hadn't heard of and looks intriguing
Q3 How are your districts working to provide equitable access to new devices?
Now that would be amazing. Sphero through the WWW...
. is a CIPA compliant tool for providing Internet access to students via MiFi.
that would be awesome one can take over the World
YESS! Looking forward to it!
We're getting new Chromebooks sooner or later :D
I'm looking into an idea I saw for a tech truck here on . Meet them in their neighborhood
really cool and important
it is. Students will come in early, during lunch, after school to play. They love when I brought in Google cardboard!
. Looks like some wicked models on the horizon!
Is that like the one shared about in TX?
A3: As far as tech "toys" I think most aren't thinking that way. Still working on access to internet for some along the river.
haha that could be a scary movie..or an epic one!
A3: Ditto. We seem to be getting position for more bandwidth
A3 I think it's important to offer spaces where all students can access inspiring devices during the day
A3: Ss just did a proposal for 1:1 chrome books. Excited. Crossing fingers.,
fantastic that students were involved. Advocacy and voice.
A3) I don't have answer & would love to hear! When new devices added, tchrs w/ know-how jump in. Their stdnts have advantage.
GoPro in my shed collecting dust! Never considered bringing it to school. But will now!
I teach nonfiction writing. Nothing else. During class we write.
A3) I think a big piece of equitable access also means good PD for tchrs
what's the idea behind this?
I have to live up to my gadget girl nickname
Just bring it to me next week. I'll put it to work.
And it is important for those unplugged spaces & experiences, too.
YES! And how do we provide that when everyone has a full plate. Key to successful growth!
yes! I think it will be useful.
Very true. That's why my Game Design class is using cardboard and duct tape this week.
Definitely need to deliver better PD
I hear that! Inspector Gadget.
Maybe we need a sandbox for Ts to play and explore . https://t.co/EH5r82P4h9
A3) I don't have answer & would love to hear! When new devices added, tchrs w/ know-how jump in. Their stdnts have advantage.
Q4: How do we transfer interest in the device/gadget to idea that Ss will be ones creating next generation of device/gadge?
good idea--can you foresee our Ts participating?
A3) Not only do we need to meet students where they are with access/opportunity, but teachers, too.
I think library media centers can play role. We are typically centrally located & committed 2 equitable access.
It was idea. (Credit where credit is due.)
A4: I think Ss naturally crave tech. They don't need prompts. They are born creators, makers, coders!
. And access to that in person can be harder in rural areas, just like opportunities are for our stdnts.
Could make good exploration spaces! https://t.co/wWMQ4RiSpS
I think library media centers can play role. We are typically centrally located & committed 2 equitable access.
has short how-to videos for Ts to explore on their own time. Start with willing ones 1st https://t.co/aqNo7A6kKr
YES! And how do we provide that when everyone has a full plate. Key to successful growth!
A4: I want to see more techy maker spaces in our schools. More time to create and explore.
true--videos are always good
yes. Capacity-building isn't limited to print materials for sure!
. I see new tech/gadgets as great prompts for experiences w/ a twist.
. I think it is in part why I try to talk up Twitter a lot with both colleagues and students. So many opports!
. It's a common thread in our mod group. How do get Ss MORE involved in everything!
Love my Twitter PLN is my partner in enthusiams for Twitter!
A4 When 1st working w/ 3 yrs ago, we only had 1. Askd Ss 2 imagine what they could create with it...loved their thinking
This is the best way to be! https://t.co/AfLYV8rE00
. It's a common thread in our mod group. How do get Ss MORE involved in everything!
saw they are going from 140 characters to 10,000
. Yes on artificial prompts. Or the tech IS the prompt - a more natural, relevant & real one!
A4 I think we need2create more time during our days to let our students just simply create and imagine. Not enough of that now.
That would be SOOO helpful! LOL
even less time, closer to testing we get :(
As long as people don't post their entire blogposts as tweets. That could get messy.
Which is the exact opposite of what we need. Students are too stressed already.
Yeah current format fit my headline reading style! https://t.co/iO6kgGtFOk
As long as people don't post their entire blogposts as tweets. That could get messy.
Absolutely! Our media center just got $4000 in grants for makerspace items including some devices. https://t.co/LWSvkOmNQA
I think library media centers can play role. We are typically centrally located & committed 2 equitable access.
Q4? Was there a device in your life that inspired you to be interested in tech? Was it @ school or @ home or elsewhere?
need Ts to participate for after school . Still want that off the ground
Let me know when y'all get it going? Would like to visit
A4: lol Windows 94 lol at home
Sweet. Make sure you connect with while you are at next week. She's the MakerSpace Queen.
A4/5: My very first computer! A TI-99/4A that got me thinking about coding.
a4) computer! No more typewriter. Used to take forever to type a page with less that 3 mistakes https://t.co/OVywBJx9cp
Q4? Was there a device in your life that inspired you to be interested in tech? Was it @ school or @ home or elsewhere?
I really hope more and more schools and teachers embrace those ideas and take the time to do them well.
. I LOVE this question! Thinking about our springboards might lead us to consider our own kids' perspectives!
City girl learning a lot from
A4) a grad prof back said we could turn in final project as web page instead of paper so I learned HTML via GeoCities! hooked!
We learn from each other all the time. You're awesome.
. Oh yeah, the good ole' Trash80. My first school personal computer in the 80's!
Many of us have been city kids, too! You're among friends, Dorian!
. Yes! Although my first step was a Brother word processor that stored docs on a DS/DD floppy!
A4: 1st newspaper reporting job got me using computer. 5 years later, I edited a paper with staff in 5 remote locations
YES! My dad brought home a used TI model from his work & I started typing journl entries on it like
I moved just a few months ago from Philly. Lots to learn from both urban & rural. Love all the connections!
What city were you in Robin?
. Woot! aka "City Mouse & Country Mouse are friends"!
My first classroom computer (as a teacher) was an apple IIe that survived a fire. Smelled aweful. https://t.co/0vngZzp2Yr
absolutely! We are thinking about a future chat to connect rural & urban edus
Loved those at school. Learned to program using BASIC.
A4 my brother bought an Atari when I was a baby. We had a game that helped me learn to read. I was tinkering in BASIC by 4
Sarah, you've always been cutting edge. I knew it!
I loved making it "snow" or scroll my name.
A4 All that to say, I was fortunate to grow up with tech.
Sarah: that's so awesome! I remember creating a pixelated smiley face on the screen & feeling really proud.
Haha thanks! We are/were all like this in my fam at some point.
So glad I stumbled upon tonight. Looking forward to next Tuesday at 8:30! Thank you
Rem myPBLon windenrgy LY?Cant wait to constructmore turbines.1 of mySs designed a wind p'd huntin truck https://t.co/R6nZwnAc8J
yessss!!! Remember the turtle game?
I remember those! Success!
Next week's will be about Cell Phones: What is the reality in our schools?
Hope to see you next week.
Yayyy Jennifer! So good to see you and happy new year.
