Hey #LearnLAP! Phil from Northern Virginia jumping in! I teach 6/7 US History I&II and am the founder of #waledchat (Thurs @ 9pm ET) and #Edusations (Youtube) Thrilled to be here!
QUESTION 1: I use the term "21st Century Skills" because I believe these are what today's teachers should focus on, rather than just allow to happen accidentally.
By the end of the year, which skills do you hope your students will have made the strongest gains in? Why? #LearnLAP
A1: Assuming they didn't have the skills already, I would want them to be better collaborators, better critical thinkers, and better managers of their own time and learning :) #learnLAP
A1 The 21st century skills that I value most in my classroom are teamwork and collaboration. Math can be an extremely social subject. Discussion drives problem solving in my class, students find the most success when they talk about their ideas! #LearnLAP
I hope my kids learn inclusion. It's so necessary to know how to include others regardless of differences and to learn how to conquer the discomfort that can accompany encountering differences and being inclusive anyway. #learnlap
QUESTION 1: I use the term "21st Century Skills" because I believe these are what today's teachers should focus on, rather than just allow to happen accidentally.
By the end of the year, which skills do you hope your students will have made the strongest gains in? Why? #LearnLAP
A1) I want my kids to be masters at publishing and using those artifacts to teach. This year I am looking at my kids more like mini-curriculum designers than as students. #LearnLAP
Q1 I'm all about collaboration and teamwork. Crucial life skills all students need to be successful beyond the classroom. We are a family...in it together and supporting one another. I try to incorporate a lot of collaboration in my room. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 1: I use the term "21st Century Skills" because I believe these are what today's teachers should focus on, rather than just allow to happen accidentally.
By the end of the year, which skills do you hope your students will have made the strongest gains in? Why? #LearnLAP
A1 - These are the 11 areas that we focus in on in our classroom. These areas are further broken down into 34 sub-categories which can be overwhelming, but so important! More information in the book! #LearnLAP
A1: I feellike problem solving skills are very important along with collaboration with respect. I also feel like critical thinking is important too but ifeel the hardest to teach. #learnLAP
A1: Collaboration and questioning skills. Ss need to be able to work together to ask appropriate questions relating to the issues the want to develop solutions for. #learnlap
A1 After attending several workshops this summer, it is clear that Ss need to develop skills to be resilient, collaborative and motivated to keep learning. This is why I am so passionate about #growth mindset. It can help develop all these things. #LearnLAP
Managing their time is important and a life long struggle! Better for kids to learn it early and carry those good habits into new experiences. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: Taking time to reflect after new learning improves retention of information, but we're often too crunched for time to give reflection time.
How can you encourage reflection (& revision) after important learning activities to improve retention & accuracy? #LearnLAP
I'm all about publishing parties! Inviting others to join for an authentic audience. Parents to a couple of them, other classes, etc. It has made such an impact! #LearnLAP
A1) I want my kids to be masters at publishing and using those artifacts to teach. This year I am looking at my kids more like mini-curriculum designers than as students. #LearnLAP
A2: Turn and Talk. Use @ProjectZeroHGSE "I used to think... Now I think..." #learnlap Ts listen in and then share some of those reflections with the class. Takes 2 minutes!
QUESTION 2: Taking time to reflect after new learning improves retention of information, but we're often too crunched for time to give reflection time.
How can you encourage reflection (& revision) after important learning activities to improve retention & accuracy? #LearnLAP
Absolutely! When I taught in the classroom, my last 15 minutes was always a reflection time. It was a great way to finish up the day and set goals for the next day. #LearnLAP
Or at least to get some exposure to it. That frontal lobe, the part that controls time management and planning, isn't fully developed even in HS, so I'm being careful about my expectations before they get to me! #learnLAP
A2: I need to do a better job at modeling for my Ss and allowing them to practice. I naturally reflect all the time and need to have my Ss do it more. I need to be more intentional about incorporating it into instruction. #learnlap
A2 I think I am going to intentionally build Reflection into each activity I create so it becomes a habit for me too. It's the thing that gets not completed most often and it's just as important as the assignment maybe more so #Learnlap
A2: Set weekly intentions in morning meeting. Kids can come back to these intentions if they'd like during the day or they can be revisited in closing circle or the next morning meeting #learnlap
A2: Spiraling and theme building within history always made it easy to revisit and reflect on what we had learned and apply it to new situations past and present. #LearnLAP
A2: By giving opportunities to reflect on process and learning, even if it takes up class time. I would probably want a Google form so I could witness the reflection in a meaningful way instead of just assuming it was happening via conversation. #learnLAP
A2: I need to do a better job at modeling for my Ss and allowing them to practice. I naturally reflect all the time and need to have my Ss do it more. I need to be more intentional about incorporating it into instruction. #learnlap
Absolutely! When I taught in the classroom, my last 15 minutes was always a reflection time. It was a great way to finish up the day and set goals for the next day. #LearnLAP
A2: I wasthinking about this while reading. .. I wouldmake it a time or event in my class and use different lighting or music to inspire reflective thought. #learnLAP
A2 A great way to have students reflect and comment on each other’s work is @Flipgrid students are able to share their success and failures and comment back to each other! #LearnLAP
I always recommend @Flipgrid, but something as simple as Google Docs, Slides (A slide a day), or even just a good old fashioned handwritten journal. Using Google Docs/Slides, Ss can voice type and that can help move the process along. #LearnLAP
A1: I hope that my students and all students gain skills in empathy, problem solving, and effective communication. These skills are needed now more than ever. #learnLAP
QUESTION 1: I use the term "21st Century Skills" because I believe these are what today's teachers should focus on, rather than just allow to happen accidentally.
By the end of the year, which skills do you hope your students will have made the strongest gains in? Why? #LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: Time is set aside for my students to set individual goals & monitor progress towards those goals each week throughout the year. Lots of evidence of growth & improvement!
What are the benefits of goal setting & how can it be done in your classroom? #LearnLAP
A1: I want my kinder kiddos to possess & employ self-awareness to be able to reflect on their use of soft skills when interacting with each other. I want them to see value in & be able to communicate, (verbal, nonverbal, & actions), collaborate, & resolve conflict. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: Taking time to reflect after new learning improves retention of information, but we're often too crunched for time to give reflection time.
How can you encourage reflection (& revision) after important learning activities to improve retention & accuracy? #LearnLAP
I need to remember to allow the time. Often so caught up in student work time it becomes a hurry up and transition situation. I need some #LearnLAP student responsibility to help watch the time! :-)
A2 I think I am going to intentionally build Reflection into each activity I create so it becomes a habit for me too. It's the thing that gets not completed most often and it's just as important as the assignment maybe more so #Learnlap
I'm intrigued... I can't wait to play with it. I've heard it referenced so much but haven't used it. Now that I know it's helpful for reflection... I'm sold! #learnlap
Picture a page where you can ask a question and users can respond with videos, respond to each other, and then make funny cover art. You can also download the videos. I use them a lot in my university class but next year much more with kids #LearnLAP
QUESTION 1: I use the term "21st Century Skills" because I believe these are what today's teachers should focus on, rather than just allow to happen accidentally.
By the end of the year, which skills do you hope your students will have made the strongest gains in? Why? #LearnLAP
A3: I have a problem with this. Most of my Ss have the same goal (get an A) or don't know how to formulate a goal that is based on learning or historical knowledge. Not sure it can be done in a meaningful way with my Ss. Thoughts, anyone? #learnLAP
A2 I think being intentional about pausing and reflecting. As Ts we should also be reflecting. By taking 3-5 minutes at the end of each lesson for ALL to reflect we can show Ss the cycle: we work, we reflect, we revise! What a great life skill! #LearnLAP
A3 This year I am transitioning to matery learning through mastery grids so Ss can see their progression through standards, with this I am trying to find a platform for my Ss to post daily or weekly goals. Any ideas?? #LearnLAP#teachbetter

A3: We write goals together. We talk about what makes his setting important and how to write meaningful SMART goals. We track our goals each week to check our progress and rewrite goals when necessary. #learnlap
A3: First of all, you have to involve the students in goal setting. Then, you need to teach students how to give and receive feedback. And be open to hearing feedback from your students as well. #learnLAP
QUESTION 3: Time is set aside for my students to set individual goals & monitor progress towards those goals each week throughout the year. Lots of evidence of growth & improvement!
What are the benefits of goal setting & how can it be done in your classroom? #LearnLAP
A3: This is another area I can improve on. I seem to be good about having them set goals and then start to pull away as year goes on. It gives them some ownership over learning. #learnlap
Its just the habit. As a kid for me I always had an hour where I was expected to read, draw, or do homework, then a half hour of juggling the soccer ball. Haha, when I got older I was good at reading, drawing, studying, and juggling a soccer ball #LearnLAP
A3: Goal-setting promotes mindfulness and enhances awareness. Why? It draws our attention to things we previously were not aware of. Self-awareness is key in a student-driven classroom. #learnlap
QUESTION 3: Time is set aside for my students to set individual goals & monitor progress towards those goals each week throughout the year. Lots of evidence of growth & improvement!
What are the benefits of goal setting & how can it be done in your classroom? #LearnLAP
A3.Taking time with Ss after meeting to set goals in learning and achievements. What are their expectations, what do they need to achieve their goals, have a timeline where check progress.#LearnLAP
A3: To make goal setting effective it needs to be modeled and revisited regularly. Teachers need to share their goals for the year and get feedback just like students. Regular one on one checkins are crucial too! #LearnLAP
A2: Est. culture/climate of reflection on day one. Embed use of quality tools into every facet of learning (before, during, & after). Transfer ownership➡️teacher modeled reflection to student led. Pay it forward & save time later. Process over product. Skills for life #LearnLAP
A3: S goal setting and reflection affects S achievement strongly It allow S the opprt to plan refect and readjust Gives them skin in the game #LearnLAP
A3 Hi Mike, I'm wondering if goal can't be a grade. Could goal be something specific Ss want to learn/do/research? Giving Ss ownership of goal w/vested interest will certainly help engagement. I'd rather work toward goal of something I'm interested in. What do u think? #learnlap
A3. Having class discussions - Morning Meetings - whatever works best - around this graphic and steps needed to make dreams come true, can be very helpful. #LearnLAP
A3 - At the end of each day, my students write a collaborative, whole-class goal for the next day based on things we could have done better today! Here is one of our chart papers with a few weeks of goals on it: #LearnLAP
#learnlap a2
Really concentrated on reflection because of my new role as Tech integrator, made it a point to ask what went well, what did i do to confuse, how do i get better. So important
Individual goals areeasier to set up and have Ss reflecton their own. @PaulSolarz can you give us ideas about how to start class goals and what they look like? #LearnLAP
A3 This will be my 2nd year doing purposeful goal setting. I use a learning journal. I think Ss really want to achieve goals, they just didn't know how. I make sure we talk action plan, and revisit at least biweekly during a marking period. #LearnLAP
A3 I try to make goal-setting fun and artistic. We make season-themed goals and hang them up in the room. This not only brings awareness to our own goals, but helps others see our goals so we can all support each other! #learnlap
A3: Goal setting allows every child to succeed! It also stretches children and instills a #growthmindset. So imp to set goals. Can be done as easily as writing 3 goals on an index card and taping it to the corner of the desk. At the end of the week, reflect & adjust. #LearnLAP
A3 When students participate in setting their own goals there is buy in and ownership. They can see their progress and be proud of their growth. They work towards where they want to be...not where they see their peers at and think they should be... #LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: Time is set aside for my students to set individual goals & monitor progress towards those goals each week throughout the year. Lots of evidence of growth & improvement!
What are the benefits of goal setting & how can it be done in your classroom? #LearnLAP
A3. As @PaulSolarz just mentioned SMART goals are marvelous. Our team spent many, many months coming up with them - built the foundation of things yet to come. #LearnLAP
A3 This will be my 2nd year doing purposeful goal setting. I use a learning journal. I think Ss really want to achieve goals, they just didn't know how. I make sure we talk action plan, and revisit at least biweekly during a marking period. #LearnLAP
A3) For my kids I initially set the goal of them being ready to present to a real audience. This gives us a set date and builds momentum. When kids get joy out of the experience they take the learning in unforeseen directions #LearnLAP
I would love to think it can be something other than a grade. I am doing a Genius Paper this year, but that is more project-specific. As for goals, my impression is that my Ss' goal is to pass the class and get it over with, TBH. #learnlap
QUESTION 4: In chapter 8, I list 16 specific ways that I empower my students in our classroom in addition to empowering them to collaborate & lead.
TOUGH QUESTION: In what ways do you (or do you plan to) empower your students? Why do you feel this is important? #LearnLAP
A3 we have 30 minutes at the beginning of the day that is the Ss goal time! They planned their own goals and they plan on how they will meet them! As they get more comfortable they are helping each other meet their goals! We never miss goal time! #LearnLAP
A3: People become accountable and growth is measurable when goals are made. For me, It’s done as a class sometimes, for specific projects or skills, and I model personal goal setting as well. #LearnLAP
I wait until the 1st trimester report card to start goals so they're based on actual needs (in order to be taken seriously by my students). I give them their first 3-8 goals & teach them how to write their own before they get their report card. :) (See my last tweet) #LearnLAP
A3 We also learn about the "cycle of inquiry." While it can be applied to any topic, we also apply it to ourselves. It's important to be curious about yourself! #learnlap
A4: I will empower my Ss by giving choice and voice. They will own the media center space and everything within it. I will constantly ask their opinion. They will set their own literacy goals and work to achieve them. #LearnLAP
#learnlap a3 It is important when setting class goals to let them come up with the name, may not be perfect but write it on the board, and take the time daily to talk about it.
Mr. Fred Ryan in 7th grade would have us do free writing to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. Only rule- you had to keep writing. He didn’t check it, grade it, or collect it. It was liberating. That was 27 years ago. Crazy how we remember the great teachers! #LearnLAP
A4 I have tried to offer voice and choice, but this year I am really going to stretch myself and given Ss more control with their path of learning. Not sure exactly how yet, but it will be some sort of blended learning model. Ss need to be aware of the HOW of learning #LearnLAP
A4. Now >this< is one of the BEST to use with students to help them ask each other questions about CEE. Try to facilitate and guide them to expressing their own thoughts. #LearnLAP
A4 I am the classroom cheerleader. I am the too proud dad who brags about my Ss an unhealthy amount. BUT THEY MUST KNOW THEIR AWESOMENESS! I praise taking risks, showing progress and getting mathematical! #LearnLAP
A4 I like to empower them through helping them witness their own vulnerability. It's important to know that we can take risks and make mistakes--and that those moments of vulnerability are so helpful to growth! #learnlap@joboaler
QUESTION 4: In chapter 8, I list 16 specific ways that I empower my students in our classroom in addition to empowering them to collaborate & lead.
TOUGH QUESTION: In what ways do you (or do you plan to) empower your students? Why do you feel this is important? #LearnLAP
QUESTION 4: In chapter 8, I list 16 specific ways that I empower my students in our classroom in addition to empowering them to collaborate & lead.
TOUGH QUESTION: In what ways do you (or do you plan to) empower your students? Why do you feel this is important? #LearnLAP
We'll see how it goes, haha! I've just got to step back and not try to constantly be in control. I've got to.... wait for it.... "Let It Go, Let It Go" #LearnLAP
I don't mean to be flip, but what do you think of having one-on-one conferences & asking Ss what their goal for your class is & why. If the goal is just "to pass the class" why? What connections are Ss missing between your class and authentic skills? #learnlap
A3: Intentional goal-setting individually & as a class is powerful. It reminds us that we all have unique strengths to contribute. Helps us be vulnerable & transparent with our areas to improve in. Assists us in keeping perspective. Snapshot vs panoramic #LearnLAP
Now that you've read "Learn Like a PIRATE," I hope that you will add your name to the #LearnLAP PLN so you can collaborate with others at your grade level on student-centered teaching practices! Here is the link: https://t.co/yqOsvP7qVV
QUESTION 4: In chapter 8, I list 16 specific ways that I empower my students in our classroom in addition to empowering them to collaborate & lead.
TOUGH QUESTION: In what ways do you (or do you plan to) empower your students? Why do you feel this is important? #LearnLAP
A4. Leading discussions, jobs in classroom, helping other students, passing supplies out, timers, recorders for experiments, leaders, cleaners, etc. #LearnLAP
A4: My classroom motto & 1 that I try to live my life by is to “find your passion and take action.” As I work to empower students to figure out life after high school, I go back to this saying often. This means exploring multiple pathways and being ok with the unknown. #LearnLAP
A4: Ss deserve the choice to demonstrate learning in their own voice. I want to provide as many outlets for Ss to share their understanding as I can. I also want to incorporate passion projects at some point this year. #learnlap
A4) I empower my children to lead in all capacities. I have my kids peer teach in class, I take them to teach my university class, and I have them teach at my conference sessions. THEY DO IT BETTER THAN I DO! #LearnLAP
That's awesome Carol! Give lots of feedback so they know exactly how you want them to use this power and try not to show frustration or they won't take the risk! :) #LearnLAP
QUESTION 5: In my opinion, "Give Me Five" has been the single, most important power that I've given my students when it comes to leadership.
Will you give your students the power to interrupt the class this year? Ignoring your concerns for now, what are the benefits? #LearnLAP
#learnlap a4 student told me the year after, why did they pick you for tech you dont know anything ...we did it all, Yes they became the experts, need help greenscreen see Josie, SeeSaw see Margaret. Have them be tech support!
A4: I empower my kiddos by giving them a voice in the learning process. I value their feedback by using it to improve our learning environment & instructional practices. We share timely feedback w/ each other & reflect using quality tools. They own their learning! #LearnLAP
A3: Basically I want to empower them by giving them as much choice as possible in the modes of learning and, where it makes sense, the content. Yes, I have a framework, but I can also emphasize stuff more that the kids genuinely like or are intrigued by. #learnLAP
A5: This is stretching me WAY out of my comfort zone, esp since I only see them for 50 min once a month. Without the adequate time to model, model, model, I'm not sure I can say yes to this. If I had my own classroom, then yes, 110% yes! #LearnLAP
Ours are so short that I didn't want to rush it - I used about an hour of class time the first time we created our personal goals based on information in each student's report card and supplemental information. #LearnLAP
A5: Absolutely. I think I may use our chime since that's how I get the kids' attention. I had them do this a few times this year (but not nearly consistently enough), and I could see how empowered they felt being able to get the whole class's attention. #learnlap
QUESTION 5: In my opinion, "Give Me Five" has been the single, most important power that I've given my students when it comes to leadership.
Will you give your students the power to interrupt the class this year? Ignoring your concerns for now, what are the benefits? #LearnLAP
A5: I haven't gotten that far in the book yet, but if the Ss are working on their own passion projects, there is nothing to interrupt, is there? It's not as if I am controlling the class... #learnLAP
A4: Ss are active in curriculum planning, classroom design, #geniushour, #PBL, collaboration, event planning, we did a Silent Day, they run Class Meetings & REARJMCL, they do self & peer assessments & they are given time to be heard by their peers and me😊#LearnLAP
QUESTION 4: In chapter 8, I list 16 specific ways that I empower my students in our classroom in addition to empowering them to collaborate & lead.
TOUGH QUESTION: In what ways do you (or do you plan to) empower your students? Why do you feel this is important? #LearnLAP
QUESTION 5: In my opinion, "Give Me Five" has been the single, most important power that I've given my students when it comes to leadership.
Will you give your students the power to interrupt the class this year? Ignoring your concerns for now, what are the benefits? #LearnLAP
A4 I try to empower mt students in any way they need! I encourage them to face their fears, try new things, take risks, make mistakes! By the end of the day I want to see them excited for their accomplishment and to take their learning on themselves! #LearnLAP
A5- How can we not let students interrupt? I think allowing a blended learning model in the classroom allows for this to happen much easier than direct instruction. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 5: In my opinion, "Give Me Five" has been the single, most important power that I've given my students when it comes to leadership.
Will you give your students the power to interrupt the class this year? Ignoring your concerns for now, what are the benefits? #LearnLAP
A5 The benefits of the High 5 to stop the Class would be building culture, by being Cheerleaders for each other and and hearing the desire skills being shouted out and celebrated #Learnlap
A5. Interrupting? If it practiced so that it shows being considerate and patient. This is one hard and fast rule I was taught that would be awfully hard to change but you seem to have methods that show consideration for whomever the speak is? #LearnLAP
A5 The benefits are huge. Meaning making does not happen at the same pace for each child. Slowing down or stopping the flow is essential for some. Asking questions is a great skill to practice AND learning should be a collaborative discussion. Community! #LearnLAP
If you'd like to moderate an upcoming #LearnLAP or #5thchat chat, please let me know! I think it works best when we have different people taking the helm each week & providing their perspective with regard to topics & questions! (I'll help you all along the way, so no worries!)
A5 one of the biggest takeaways was “give me 5”. I will give my Ss the ability to interrupt the class. I believe this connects with reflection. If Ss are seeing a need during the lesson they are practicing those reflections and revising skills. #LearnLAP
This is one of the things Paul discusses in #LearnLAP. He models interrupting in such a way that it is considerate. It is used during student instruction and interwoven into a student-empowered, student-centered classroom. It's totally amazing - seemed foreign to me too at first.
QUESTION 6: Giving students CHOICE is a great way to empower them, yet I limit their choices occasionally (like choosing partners).
How do you provide your students w/ choices throughout their day (Genius Hour, Flexible Seating, Choice Menus)? How is this implemented? #LearnLAP
It's important to peak their interest. I try and hook them wherever possible and then show them that the little thread of learning leads to endless possibilities. #learnlap
A5 Regardless of grade level, kiddos are capable of developing a keen sense of self-awareness when equipped w/ tools for reflection. Kiddos initiate opportunities to reflect & improve, often times able to pinpoint opportunities for improvement & generate solutions #LearnLAP
A6: My Ss LOVE the flex seating in the media center. As soon as they are allowed to break off and work independently or in groups, they are welcome to move anywhere within the media center. #LearnLAP
As educators we have to model being a life long learners. This includes reading, experimenting, taking healthy risks, asking questions, wondering out loud. If we are genuinely passionate about learning, our Ts will follow our lead. Start on day one. #learnLAP#TeachBetter
A6 I think one of the most powerful ways to give kids choice is to build it in to already existing blocks. Using the workshop model for reading, writing, and math naturally builds choice into the block in a sustainable way! #learnlap
QUESTION 6: Giving students CHOICE is a great way to empower them, yet I limit their choices occasionally (like choosing partners).
How do you provide your students w/ choices throughout their day (Genius Hour, Flexible Seating, Choice Menus)? How is this implemented? #LearnLAP
A6 played around with genius hour last year but feel a lot more comfortable going into this one! Also adding choice into my mastery grids so that students have more say on how to show mastery of the standards! #learnlap
A6) I set up a peer teaching protocol where kids could "ask the experts". Surprisingly, even when they picked their friend they worked much harder. They also liked becoming the expert that some else could call upon. #learnlap
A5 The benefits are huge. Meaning making does not happen at the same pace for each child. Slowing down or stopping the flow is essential for some. Asking questions is a great skill to practice AND learning should be a collaborative discussion. Community! #LearnLAP
A6 We do not have assigned seating and various forms of seating is greatly encourage. Choice is embedded in most of our units especially writing and literature. Student led conferences also plays a big role in choice making. #LearnLAP
A5: Give Me 5 is what truly creates the culture of student led learning. Ss gain confidence, share their talents, become a true team and begin to do what’s best for the group far more consistently. It allows everyone a voice, and empowers collaboration. #LearnLAP
You want class to be as interactive as possible. They don't want you to lecture the whole time and I'm sure you don't either 😂.
I always liked to design my lessons to only consume 2/3 of the allotted time to take advantage of students' ?s. #LearnLAP
A6: I couldn't get my colleagues to buy into a full Genius Hour, but we did agree to do a Genius Paper about any topic they were interested in...utilizing the research and writing skills they learned in the first semester :) #learnLAP
Ss can sit where they like. When doing multiple activities for choices, usually limited to two or three! Too many choices on table, lead to problems with sticking with a choice! #LearnLAP
Before I started coaching I had implemented genius hours and service learning based on their own passion. Both were very effective. I also built centers around topics and gave choice on how to work through them and who they worked with. #LearnLAP
A6: Kiddos have lots of choice through flexible seating options & opportunities to confer with classmates during workshop time or within math stations. #LearnLAP
Okay #CravenEdChat & #LearnLAP - I've got to take a quick break with my daughters before #tlap - hope to see you there. Remember to follow one another so the sharing doesn't stop tonight! You guys are rockstars!
A6 I give project choice, learning games choice and choice of fun themed learning days. TONS of choice during our Kid Town unit. Started flexible seating mid last year as well. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 6: Giving students CHOICE is a great way to empower them, yet I limit their choices occasionally (like choosing partners).
How do you provide your students w/ choices throughout their day (Genius Hour, Flexible Seating, Choice Menus)? How is this implemented? #LearnLAP
A6- We use flexible seating and choice boards! It depends on the teacher but many teachers have a google slide or doc with choice for ss to chose from #LearnLAPhttps://t.co/NnY7tLXLF0
When I started teaching I had some funny and engaging lectures, I had a kid call me the magic school bus. Back then I was the creator, now I want my kids to create and make our learning artifacts as much as possible #learnlap
A6: I love for students to have a choice in showing their understanding. I kind of like this because I pretty much can’t remember the last time I showed my understanding of real life concepts by choosing A, B, C, or D. Can you? #LearnLAP
Yikes! I do lecture now, but only for 12 mins at a time and never for more than 4 days in a row. Too much of "the Mike Messner Show" and not enough focus on the kids and what THEY need! #LearnLAP
QUESTION 7: Chapter 9 describes what I believe is my purpose as an educator. This purpose has changed over my career, but has always included certain components (relationships, self-esteem building).
What is your purpose as an educator? If possible, "tell me more." :) #LearnLAP
#learnlap a6 Not always partners, cause it is important to work with everyone, but Choice is powerful and necessary, let them take a risk step out of what we normally do.
A6. I created this graphic of my youngest son walking along the Mississippi River - "We all make choices, but in the end our choices make us." #LearnLAP
A6: #genishour, #pbl, Daily 5, flexible seating, I’m dabbling in ‘prove your learning however you wish’ assignments, lots of choice in projects, having Ss to set the schedule of their day, choice in tasks as well #LearnLAP
A7: My purpose is to disrupt traditional learning of history where possible, to get students to take the idea of citizenship seriously, and to facilitate as much fun as we can have in the learning process! #learnLAP
A7) My purpose as an educator is to show that my kids (always the lowest) can do what any kid from any other neighborhood can do. I firmly believe that the collective of kids in my class is better than me, and my research shows it #learnlap
Autonomy and ownership is HUGE in learning. It makes the job of Ts soooooo much easier when the Ss run the show.

I was a MS principal for 7 years - it was an amazing experience. One day they wanted to be treated like a young adult and the next day when you gave them that kind of responsibility, they would look at you and say, "sheesh, I'm just a kid!" I adored it! #LearnLAP
A7 My hope & prayer continues to be that my kiddos leave my class knowing that they are loved, they have tremendous worth, they matter, & that they are impacting the world in a way that nobody else can. In turn, they see & affirm the value of others & change the world! #LearnLAP
A8: I haven't actually finished the book yet, but the first thing this year will be to ask my Ss how they want to be held accountable for their reading: blogged reflections, reading quizzes, or written HW. They decide, I implement! #learnLAP
Using their feedback is awesome! The more you show then that you value and use their feedback, the more feedback they'll give you. Ideal world, you won't even have to ask for it! #LearnLAP
Thank you #learnlap for another awesome chat! Hoping to head to @SXSWEDU this year, and would love it if you helped by upvoting me! Let's get more teachers voices in thought leadership and decision-making! https://t.co/r8JzkvKwai

That's awesome Eddie! Public speaking is a skill that needs to be deliberately taught.
It's a critical skill in the workplace and this is a great way to help Ss learn how to prepare for public speaking and interacting with an audience. #LearnLAP
#learnlap a8 Have Monday goal meetings, have Friday reflections, do not skip! Eventually the kids run these and I dont have to talk. Not right away keep at it! It is their classroom not yours!
