Good morning . 6th grade math teacher from Indiana. 😊

A1: about College and Career Readiness. we fail kids thinking College means Career. Need more vocational p… https://t.co/4qXTSCLE8f
Good morning from NH. Looking forward to sharing with great Ts this morning.
Good Morning , great topic this morning. This is Chris from Harmony, a HS Principal in Warren County.
- Ah VT! One of my fav places to go. Sorry to hear about the tragic accident recently.
A1 It means very specific things: to be ready to answer questions given in college lectures, or to do what you’re told in a job.
A1. S's have the organization and study skills they need to manage time and workload of college
Morning Dennis - I believe you missed adding the adjective Awesome Ms Ss Teacher - love your posts!
A1 Student being aware of all options and prepared to face the "real" world. Our teachers provide that platform and structure.
Yes, it was magical. Although it's beautiful to see them growing into young adults https://t.co/14zWO0pnF6
My twins will be 16 on Nov.6. I miss everything about "those days!" Right?
A1: C&C readiness is more than just academics. Ss must have collab and cooperation as well to be best prepared.
Folding clothes and missed Q1. Can someone repost?
A1 That might have been hyperbole. I know what you mean, but I’m curious about why the question is in debate.
Cherish every messy moment https://t.co/XcCPvGDr4i
I’m sure it’s all different issues then :) I have learned thus far that the power of goes a long way.
A1. In , we recently adopted a multimetric approach to define college and career readiness (1/2)
Thanks Billy! Glad to be here!
College and Career ready means kids leave hs with a plan. They know their strengths and have some attainable goals.
connected leaders!- I am collecting digital best practices from school admins like you at https://t.co/4fyuwlMOzi Please DM me!
Heading off to Rick's Run 5K in a bit. But first, coffee and
A1 I don't. As a department chair, I emailed a survey to history dept chairs in higher ed about what was needed - enlightening
A1: be ready for independence, hard work and responsibility. Know how to grind through the tough days. Cornell taught me it all.
Before you know it they will be college ready 😭😉 https://t.co/XcCPvGDr4i
I’m sure it’s all different issues then :) I have learned thus far that the power of goes a long way.
A1 Student confidence in a robust skill set and problem-solving ability.
A1: it requires both academic skills and life skills
A1. I think it means you become responsible now for your own learning.
A1:The ability to be able to successfully complete the requirements in a college freshman class.
A1: Metrics include community service, AP success, Algebra 2 completion, choosing a career cluster, internship experience (2/2)
This is a new term for me: "college readiness" Used a lot in the States?
A1 Students need to experience the struggle to succeed and develop persistence.
A1 Readiness is being prepared to apply academic/social/thinking skills learned/acquired to transition to next chapter in life.
RT : Wonderful to start our day!
A1: I don’t the students (& our changing world does) My job is to provide the skills & tools to assist them.
A1) College and Career readiness is getting the learner prepared for *today’s* society. We want our learners to be good citizens!
A1: C&C Readiness is about giving our Ss the skills, language, challenge&experiences to best prepare them for higherEd or futurejobs
A1 C&C readiness means Ss have determined a passion & prepared themselves for success in that area
A1) Readiness means understanding yourself and your strengths enough to know how to use them to be successful in any "future" plans
Readiness has a lot more to do with learning how to think/learn than learning specific facts or isolated set of skills.
Good morning all. Happy Weekend. Michelle grade 1-2 from Ontario here! A bit late-but happy to be here!
A1:As MS principal, academic readiness is just 1 part.Exposure to careers, training and schools are critical. We have a C&C committee
If you don’t mind my asking: what does completing algebra 2 demonstrate?
A1: need different skills: "life readiness" along with C&C: Balance a checkbook, credit cards & loans, write, science of a house
A1 two part answer , college/university- giving pupils the tools and skills to be able to take their learning to the next level
A1: Be able to communicate, problem solve, and work within a team. Bonus points if we encourage them to become leaders
A1: hard work, cooperation with a team, finding their way through new challenges and never giving up.
A1 In a classroom built on agency children define it for themselves our most imp work is to foster independent meaningful work
A1: College and Career Readiness means that educators are ensuring students focus on the now so they are prepared for the future
That is a needed skill too. My son is not even close https://t.co/vEZQ3MI3qT
Folding clothes and missed Q1. Can someone repost?
A1:The ability to handle social and emotional situations in at a college or on the job.
A1: C & C Readiness means preparing Ss to be critical thinkers and providing hands-on learning experiences. To name a few.
A1: It's preparing ss with independent work & academic abilities. 7C's to College and Career Competency https://t.co/tWHcyR7Fjg
A1. Ss have the knowledge and skills to be success in college and a career. Many different factors.
RT Q1: How do you define college and career readiness?
A1: Watching my own children become "college ready". For them it means taking ownership of the process
We’ve become more proficient at determining college readiness…but still have much to learn in preparing kids for knowledge economy.
A1 a S who is C&C ready knows how to work in a group or independently to use knowledge to solve problems Even when it is not easy
A1 We must prepare our Ss 4 life that awaits them as creative problem solvers, decision makers, citizens.
A1: Young people who are able to engage in future, thinking, collaborating, including others, learning, & focused.
A1: S's that are showing mastery and independence in their learning
A1 College and Career ready means that you are able to solve complex problems without help of parents or teachers.
A1: Ss ability to know what resources are available and using those resources to solve problems and learn autonomously
Good morning>Tom Assistant Principal Bridgewater Raynham H.S. . Glad to collaborate with educators this morning
A1. You're demonstrating independence...being able to succeed in a job setting
A1: having the motivation passion and knowledge to contribute to a greater good in an area you can make a difference with help
A1 for work , they will be a valuable add to society , be able to interact/ communicate with people , be able to work in teams
Yes! https://t.co/0TaJ6Ufl7Z
Readiness has a lot more to do with learning how to think/learn than learning specific facts or isolated set of skills.
A1:All 7th grade students are going to Career and Tech center to see 19 different programs. They get to pick their top 2 to observe
A1: C&C readiness is about keeping up with and predicting what future jobs will be needed
A1 I agree! I'd also add the resilience to handle changing the plan as life unfolds. https://t.co/TLi7P4vg0o
College and Career ready means kids leave hs with a plan. They know their strengths and have some attainable goals.
Travis from IN checking in late after driving home from the beach yesterday
GM, not feeling great, will be in/out of chat.A1: the skill of time management and growth mindset!
A1: Having the vital academic skill set & level of maturity to navigate college or workplace.
Harnessing the passion is key! https://t.co/XR3cUKd8Xv
A1 C&C readiness means Ss have determined a passion & prepared themselves for success in that area
I hope Ss are prepared to improve upon today's society: better discourse, better discipline, better sense of direction.
Good morning! College and career readiness is realizing our future is in our classroom! Prepaer for jobs that don't exist!
A1: college & career is differentiated for all students by creating personalized pathways/schedules/opportunities for all learners
There is a direct connection between listening & learning. Here's the map to listen better. https://t.co/5KTt89u5cp
A1) In terms of readiness, these learners will be taking care of US in the future. We have an obligation to teach them for today!
A1 Understanding self is key-help Ss build self-efficacy.
A1: We're doing our students an injustice by closing some of the voc. ed. schools here in CT
A1: Giving S's the tools & soft skills needed to become effective society members. Creating independent thinkers & collaborators
Perhaps. But how can we expect an 8-year-old to think about that? Or even a 16-year-old?
I agree and would add active thinkers and participants in today's society.
A1 Mentally and academically prepared for your next adventure. Soft skills included.
ah he big red campus definitely challenged us and taught us that we can overcome anything we set out our minds to.
watching your own children is PBL!
Thanks for joining in Vicki.
thanks ... you're rocking this Education life style too ... we are better together! Our 's ROCK!
A1:The ability to read and understand, write and be heard, problem with fidelity, think in critical situations.
Hmm, what's the 2016 equivalent of balancing a chequebook?
Can you explain knowledge economy more? In 140 characters 😉 https://t.co/UqxA99JMEx
We’ve become more proficient at determining college readiness…but still have much to learn in preparing kids for knowledge economy.
A1 Know how to have a balanced life. Work and play need to be present.
A1 You are ready for college in the moment you know that to know something is NOT the same as being good educated.
Yes! Learning to navigate challenges is a big part of being ready.
Knowing how to communicate is HUGE. It's tough to know adults who have good ideas and don't know how to express them.
Not sure anyone ever asked me if I was college and career ready after sitting in HS for 4 years
A1 Ability to find key, credible resources, sort through the noise of information overload, organize time & include exercise!
Good morning! College and career readiness is realizing our future is in our classroom! Prepare for jobs that may not exist!
A1: Students can demonstrate the critical thinking and problem-solving skills reqd to succeed in 22nd century careers or college
College ready means they have to write & research. Thy also need good study habits. They need this foundation
A1: In very general terms, these Student Vision elements work for me. From assessment docs. https://t.co/qL5r5pG2XD
I’d like that too. I’m highly skeptical of the “knowledge economy” trope.
A1) I know it has to do with a lot more than content.
A1. Independence, sense of inquiry, passion to follow through on their own ideas. We need to help support all of these.
Let's add citizenship and cognition to this and we're on a roll!
Great to see that so many agree readiness should not be determined by just a test score! So much more is needed
A1 students are optimistic about learning and improving to be a part of a larger community
A1 Yes, we need to address the whole child.
Hey there! I know… between Superintendent stuff and being a Dad, life is insanity. Feeding two while doing — crazy!
Absolutely. Sometimes r job is to provide the experiences so that they can find what they love https://t.co/RjJRRi5ugA
Harnessing the passion is key! https://t.co/XR3cUKd8Xv
A1 C&C readiness means Ss have determined a passion & prepared themselves for success in that area
I wish I had known. I see so much info, that one completely slipped by me! 😣
A1 I define "college and career readiness" as individual to each student and only part of what their first 18 years are about.
A1: College ready is more than the cognitive - Ss need to be able to think about what they learn and to work well with a team.
A1. Also these same students show integrity, grit, and self-discipline to problem solve & collaborate
A1 For me it means students have learned necessary skills needed to be productive workers & successful citizens>Soft skills a must
Just told my son yesterday - not many things worth it in life are usually easy.
A1: Math, English and Tech skills AND Persistence, Teamwork, Creative, Time Management
yes, grit! & the ability to get help when needed to get back up. Independence also means knowing when & how to get help.
A1 College and Career readiness is dependent on the individual NOT the mandate set by the state. Not every kid goes to college.
Joining a bit late from Missouri. Good morning
A1: To be CCR, students need to be able to think critically, solve problems, and communicate.
A1 along than academics. Ss need time mgmt & collab. skills.
A1: preparing students for a future workforce not yet in existence which means teaching agility, metacognition & adaption skills.
A1: Readiness prob includes academic stuff - even more important IMO are social emotional skills independence is not easy
Can't "like" that response but I agree.
A1 College & Career readiness to me is allowing students opportunities to imagine & create, without nothing new develops
Here's the rub. College classes are in transition. To much low level learning. More about hoop jumping than learning
Tremendous phrase: harnessing the passion. After it's harnessed, how to navigate them as well. https://t.co/jUz9KHPciv
Harnessing the passion is key! https://t.co/XR3cUKd8Xv
A1 C&C readiness means Ss have determined a passion & prepared themselves for success in that area
A1: College & Career Readiness to me = Willingness to Learn Anything and Unprecedented Adaptability!
It’ the shift we are undergoing, which many have termed fourth industrial revolution…reshaping the future of work
Library teacher from PA, Late cause I was dropping daughter at PSAT
Q2: offers multiple metrics to define college & career readiness. What indicators do you use to measure readiness?
Unless Universities change the way they deliver curriculum our digital/PBLearners will never be ready. Not used to being talked at
A1 We say College/Career Ready, but focus solely on college ... what happened to the trade schools? I was a VoTecEd kid ...
A2 Early evidence of social responsibility, digital literacy, an understanding of social media and its impact and effectiveness.
Same! https://t.co/eZ8uLitpee
Not sure anyone ever asked me if I was college and career ready after sitting in HS for 4 years
Preparing students for the future;
Knowledge - Interdisciplinarity
Skills - Toolbox
Character - Ethics
https://t.co/l45lHrKPCn
Absolutely. You’re no good to anyone being dead weight. It’s your society - - contribute to it. https://t.co/IwLxkrzqhu
I agree and would add active thinkers and participants in today's society.
Absolutely. https://t.co/ZplioOChq4
A1: Watching my own children become "college ready". For them it means taking ownership of the process
A1 Focusing on “college and career” inverts the priorities. The critical part of early life is to learn how to be a good person.
absolutely! Asking for help shows strength not weakness!
Absolutely! In attitude, maturity, skills. Flexibility, too. Oh, and social skills, which many lack today. https://t.co/08c40BYX9T
A1: C&C readiness is more than just academics. Ss must have collab and cooperation as well to be best prepared.
Resilience is essential for students to thrive in learning & life
exactly we need to foster a drive and Passion for independence!
I would include world languages and talk about how all these disciplines & skills work together to make a better S
totally agree! We had autotutorial courses at Cornell. And still paid for them...
A2 Rigor and Perseverance define readiness to me
A1: Ss can determine where they go and choose a path to get there. Know which tools are needed.
love passion seeds worry that Ss feel lacking if they don't have 1 passion. But curiosity to explore is key!
A1: "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." flexible, open, literate
complicated (or facilitated) by the evolution of communication technology
I know I wasn't Ned! Not college either! Was expected to get masters or PhD https://t.co/tAmnvXmRlc
Not sure anyone ever asked me if I was college and career ready after sitting in HS for 4 years
When people read collage and career ready. Many read it as college or career ready. Big difference.
VoTec schools have a lot of awesome programs now. I do think we need to make sure S's are aware.
I believe schools are beginning to tap into this shift. I see it here in MD https://t.co/NRC6k3pkXI
It’ the shift we are undergoing, which many have termed fourth industrial revolution…reshaping the future of work
Even w/ good skills & focus on learning, are Ss really ready if they don't know WHY they're going to college? Is it their OWN goal?
A1 If you can read, question, think, imagine, create, problem solve, work with others and repeat, then you are C&C ready.
Agree. But then, why the relentless focus on “college and career”? Why not just explore let the chips fall?
Educators are going to need to become much more aware of the exponential shifts that reshaping our societal ecosystem.
I think the key is career ready for these Ss. They still need good foundations in content and ALL Ss need soft skills
Education is not solely about preparing young people for industry but helping them to become a well balanced individual in society.
A2: When students get right to work and ask questions along the way. Meet challenges head on.
A2: Cotinuous benchmarking assessing the core skills we are looking to target and grow
A1) Ss need to be able to problem solve, work with others, and have capacity to learn. Personal responsibility is also key.
A2. Independence, Self-discipline, drive, passion, ability to collaborate, desire to learn/improve
A2 In Germany we have the »Abitur«at the end of high school (Gymnasium)—It depends on grades what u are able to study at university
If you didn’t figure this out, David is a genius. Follow him. https://t.co/xTrrEn0N0D
Educators are going to need to become much more aware of the exponential shifts that reshaping our societal ecosystem.
Yes. Tech can help/hinder communication, depending on the circumstance. We have to know how to use it.
A1 Kids need to have time management skills, be life-long learners in global economy,, be resilient, set realistic & rigorous goals
and how to play ... on the play ground ... solve real problems ... life isn't about following step by step directions
Ah. Yes. Well, I agree. And I’m curious how a laser-like focus on “college and career” will accomplish that.
I tell my Ss, "My job isn't to get u a job, I think more highly of u than that, My job is to get you thinking"
QUESTION 2 NOW BEING DISCUSSED
https://t.co/czkgNp21OD
Q2: offers multiple metrics to define college & career readiness. What indicators do you use to measure readiness?
Great ?! Research shows success in Alg. 2 in HS is linked to both college enrollment & bachelor’s degree attainment
In Canada the focus of a college is mostly trades. Universities are more for academics.
a2. Besides academic skills I am trying to stress the importance soft skills. These skills are paramount to anything else.
Off to a frosty morning soccer practice. I have a ton of info on starting an ELO/internship program.
https://t.co/AHLH4pQe12
Great leaders and teachers MODEL the hard stuff.
yes! How this is done is another topic but & to create independence is essential.
I agree. College should B filled with classes that R tied 2 career choice. Not 2 more HS yrs than . . .
A2: we use indicators, ACT, AIR, Naviance, NWEA, work samples, observation, presentations, credentialing, conferencing, GEAR Up
totally agree. You have to set goals everyday. Achievable and attainable goals… be true to yourself and go for it!
A2 I am in a primary school so readiness is revealed through S goals linked to performance assessments rubrics & checklists.
A2: don't have to wait for Ts to help them get started on a challenge. Dives in and works through it finding resources along way.
This is a great point. Today there are so many more paths to adult success. Want to keep all the doors open https://t.co/SoL0LuU7OV
When people read collage and career ready. Many read it as college or career ready. Big difference.
That's very scary, no? Means our own comfortable existence will change. https://t.co/RidT0bsMFp
Educators are going to need to become much more aware of the exponential shifts that reshaping our societal ecosystem.
But is it linked to indicators for Non college students. Many find success w/out it!
A2. Can they collaborate? Can they use social media to learn and share ed ideas?
A2: C&C ready = skills and not knowledge memory of students. C&C ready needs to be about what's built not what's memorized.
A1: we don't know what the future holds but we can prepare children for it. How are we possibly okay with that sentiment?
Thanks! I didn't, wish I could've! 3 years ago I just decided that I wanted a superhero to help my students!
Please say more. https://t.co/RidT0bsMFp
Educators are going to need to become much more aware of the exponential shifts that reshaping our societal ecosystem.
A2: Ss need opportunity to fail without it being fatal.Reassess & Let kids try&fail w/o punitive
A2: We need to graduate learners who have been challenged/guided to think about their plans post-secondary.
A1: Helping each child bridge a connection of what they learn today impacts their college career and actual career.
I love the memes : it's Thursday and I haven't used algebra yet. https://t.co/VCbcjun0jO
If you don’t mind my asking: what does completing algebra 2 demonstrate?
A2 Metrics? How about, is a young person kind to their peers? Do they help? Do they empathize? Do they work with their community?
Please tag me next time. I love going to conferences and new PD opportunities. 🤓
Great point. Some kids are just along for the ride and follow what is popular. Need passion.
yes but when schools are requiring courses that get kids college ready we are killing those who are not college bound
is all about applying your skill set to today’s needs. It’s not a test for Jeopardy anymore.
A1: There are many soft skills that need to be addressed as well. talk articulately
A2 Curiosity and open-mindedness. Not sure how you'd measure those, but wow, are they important!
Where did this come from? I really like it but would like to be able to credit the author.
https://t.co/c3IncUWDfs
A1: need different skills: "life readiness" along with C&C: Balance a checkbook, credit cards & loans, write, science of a house
agree completely and opportunities to fail forward, learn from mistakes.
Now I see your POV but remember that there are jobs that are more than menial tasks
A2. Need Ss w Habits of Scholarship (Communication collaboration integrity tenacity & leadership)
And we MUST meet one day! Lol
A2: Critical thinking is very important. Creating authentic situations for Ss to show their ability to think & use resources
A2: Lately, I've been looking at teaching through the lens of social emotional needs first. The academic will follow.
Intro - Jonathan Gerlach from Tampa. International Consultant on for
I wouldn't have known how to answer that question if they had.
what's the new white - failure isn't falling down but instead not getting back up again.
A2 - Evidence, data, proof!
Maybe not "trades" so much as applied learning in real contexts. https://t.co/mO5Oq2BMK6
In Canada the focus of a college is mostly trades. Universities are more for academics.
A2 unfortunately we are still on the path of what exam passes you have , employers/colleges are still looking for grades
A2) Being college and career ready looks different for everyone. It's a state of mind.
I think we can all agree that we need more of this in our world today… https://t.co/jXGOURvSLq
A1: "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." flexible, open, literate
- We are having some success at MS with soft skills. I agree these are important. https://t.co/CyQxnz6zIX
a2. Besides academic skills I am trying to stress the importance soft skills. These skills are paramount to anything else.
Speaking personally- yes. Both of my girls want to go, despite the knowledge of the debt they will have https://t.co/hotCGQ6gMz
Even w/ good skills & focus on learning, are Ss really ready if they don't know WHY they're going to college? Is it their OWN goal?
that is awesome! Keep leading strong.
yes! time management, persistence, communication, self discipline.
A3 I lead by example in volunteering for many community events and being a consistent presence
Maybe. Given that the only path through math for any student going to college includes A2, I’m still skeptical.
can't focus on the present and future at the same time. We've chosen the future.
A2: Following directions, collab problem solving are important readiness indicators for me.
I was VoTec in High School ... I was prepared to be an electrician out of HS ... where are those programs?
A2 building in productive struggle so Ss can learn, thrive and problem solve in the work world.
A2: Self-directed learners-"they talk the talk and walk the walk."
Someone needs to tell that to the University professors.
A2: Exposing students to authentic problem based learning to assess core skills and expand new ones
A2. Students shouldn't be reduced to a single test score- we look at community service, internship experience, industry credentials
Couldn't agree more!!! https://t.co/Q7DuM68rcg
A2 Curiosity and open-mindedness. Not sure how you'd measure those, but wow, are they important!
these are great C & C readiness and general life readiness frameworks!
Agreed. I think it is much more about what to do when there aren't step by step directions, like innovate! https://t.co/AXFEMcUk6B
and how to play ... on the play ground ... solve real problems ... life isn't about following step by step directions
Not an inherent human trait.
Wasn't a question, just an expectation. https://t.co/BPkgJuXnyE
I wouldn't have known how to answer that question if they had.
I agree with your second point, but I question the impossibility of thinking of both.
Sharing ideas. Too many horde their knowledge. Wasted talent.
Or explore what excites you and follow that passion!?
What do you think are the content skills? Basic algebra, technical writing, conversational WLang, specialized SC?
we need to bring back trade schools. Our country is short on skilled labour. Now there are SHSM courses at HS.
We talk about success...we also need to teach Ss how to adjust to change in plans or realize we might fail at times.
Thanks for this resource! Our SpEd S's & T's could benefit from https://t.co/b8emnk9LTc indicators. Looking forward to life ready!

A2: Not sure what colleges want, besides a tuition check, so metrics are hard to determine
We fail as Ts when Ss don't know how to proceed on own & pause to ask "what do I do next??" w progress paralysis
Absolutely, that citizenship piece is absolutely key. The world needs people ready to make change not hi… https://t.co/e6soSdfXtu
A2 Metrics? How about, is a young person kind to their peers? Do they help? Do they empathize? Do they work with their community?
CA in midst of huge system redesign…based on multiple measures. College & career readiness being 1 of those indicators
Q3: In , community service is a career readiness indicator. Discuss ways you get students engaged in volunteering
sometimes failing was what I needed to kick myself in the pants and try a new method. Depends on def of "fail"
and speaking for myself I had all the skills, and I wanted to go, but I didn't know why I was there. No real goal
A2 Yes - also an imp goal is to prepare our students as digital citizens
As a former scientist, I know that well. And I seriously question how focusing on this particular goal is useful.
Time mgmt is the biggest skill I think I teach to my 8th graders. Must use their tools! https://t.co/UlYzCOME6u
A1 Kids need to have time management skills, be life-long learners in global economy,, be resilient, set realistic & rigorous goals
I agree with you, but I feel like this is an understatement…
A2 a s/w develop bus said they aren't looking for students out of uni , looking for students can thinkfor themselves, team players
A2: To me, becoming ready is a life-long process -- a cycle of growth mindset, determination, reflection, and doing the work.
thinking of both, considering, sure. But when we make one our focus, and we have, the other must be sacrificed I think.
Hey - Don from Long Island - jumping in late
A2: Can the Ss think critically. We can't let students just "play school" anymore. Ss need to be active learners.
And on that note, we also need to bring back shop and home ec or Tech 21 as we had in my board. Real life skills.
I think many do not. I'm lucky to be in an skool where we intentionally plan for cross-curriculum
A2. Important to focus on the 4 C's when looking at C+C readiness. School can't just prepare Ss for the next grade level.
a1) Maybe college OR career ready? Two distinct states of being.
When parents are disconnected, they worry more, then intervene unnecessarily, and stifle growth. A2 https://t.co/FmKaqn3tiB
Q2 Why is it important that parents are connected to your classroom?
Some of our SpEd S's ask the same thing. What do you think T's can do to get them back?
Yes, the motto here is "dumb kids are in regular classes so take honors and GT" How can they develop passi… https://t.co/KilAmH00A5
yes but when schools are requiring courses that get kids college ready we are killing those who are not college bound
Hard one, right? :) , how do you guys teach, grow this in Ss?
A3: Turned government class into Civic Action w the essential Q that "regular people can make social change" they have to do it
A2: Keeping in mind that Ss are more than just a test score. Looking at ways to meet Ss individual needs.
Ss need basic life readiness skills too. More than academics- how to manage time, finances, stress.
A2: knowing our S outside test scores. We measure social emotional learning trends with SEL indicators
A2 Let's add in creative thinker as the mark of Ss who exits HS
This is fantastic! May I use it?
. I was just typing "passion and motivation", and saw you said it perfectly. https://t.co/3vAmIHjXYX
A1: having the motivation passion and knowledge to contribute to a greater good in an area you can make a difference with help
I agree. I guess I’d prefer we try to learn from the past rather than focus on getting that "good job" or into college.
A3 I'm excited about our Community Problem Solvers Club for grade 3-5 students this year w/focus on a school or local area problem.
HS internships help prepare Ss for post-secondary college/career or some other pathway like trades https://t.co/XlQv6QLsRm
then of course there's the ego-driven folky of believing we actually can have a say in what the future will be.
I agree 100%. We can create exponential change if we SHARE the crap out of our work!!
satchat
I agree on this and not just as electives in high school. Needed in the middle and intermediate grades.
A2 Yes, I have been using this graphic in PD sessions. It appeared on engageny.
A3: We have seniors do Senior Project where they do comm. serv. within community at area where they express interest.
There are good resources from World Economic Forum and Institute of the Future on the future skills necessary for career readiness.
A1: to be truly college & career ready, interests & intrinsic motivation come into play
Failing and then figuring out how to win is an important part of the learning process!! https://t.co/yecP5J3gwl
We talk about success...we also need to teach Ss how to adjust to change in plans or realize we might fail at times.
do scientists not collaborate? use technology? think critically to solve problems? were they born with this ability?
So much to read! I'm 11 minutes behind in my tweet stream! Lol
A3 at we have an interact club, a charity committee & pupils can sign up for a volunteering skills award accredited through sqa.
Lots of reflection. Lots of discussions. Safe environments for transparent learning.
A3 Many Ss at our school are involved in Comm.Service Lrng they see the value of volunteering and civic duty/pride
A3 For PreTs volunteering to help our field partners with student activities, clubs, events. Gets them excited.
A3 Community service is built into the ethos of my school. It should be so in every school.
Lets support creative thinking at all grade levels!
A3 My Community-Based Service Learning page https://t.co/KG1OaIftMQ Work with community organizations to provide volunteer jobs.
How can you put a number on "readiness" ... seriously, a test doesn't make you "ready"
Think of the speed of change and digital transformation that is disrupting and will disrupt the future of work.
Exactly the same experience for me!! Graduated without fully knowing too! https://t.co/5hsd7Tiomn
and speaking for myself I had all the skills, and I wanted to go, but I didn't know why I was there. No real goal
Yes! I want Ss to develop their own skills and do the work so they can function w/o me.
Soft skills are important and must be developed to prepare students for life.
Yes, they need to sit through lecture, but maybe colleges should change modes of instruction.
A3 Our elementary students conduct one major community service event each year. Start early and it becomes part of the culture.
A3 HS graduates-unsure what 2 do can earn $5k towards future ed by volunteering @ parks-learning new skills https://t.co/ZBJs2UEDlX
From Arthur L. Costa &Bena Kallick, Habits of Mind: A Developmental Series, Copyright©2000 Not sure who designed chart
A3:Community service is part of our athletic program, as well as clubs and activities.
I love this focus on life - not a path, program, college, or career - but whatever comes next! https://t.co/ifJh0Uo1xh
Well said. Starts with more student centered lessons that involve personalized learning >>engaged https://t.co/1tiJAQmpIR
A2: Can the Ss think critically. We can't let students just "play school" anymore. Ss need to be active learners.
A3 Ts need to model volunteering, provide opportunities for Ss, allow Ss to take ownership of activities
A2: The S's ability to be motivated w/o a carrot or stick. Middle School S's show potential and hopefully on the right path
A3: Community service can't be forced. PBL allows students to make a difference through their own passions & interests
somehow we find it hard to trust that the future takes care of itself, even though nothing but that has ever been true.
Been using the graphic for sometime now in PD sessions. Appeared first on engageny.
A3: Is there a economic class component to college readiness? Community service is tough when Ss income is needed to support family
I think it’s worth trying to convince students their voices will be heard and can change the future. But not the focus.
A1 College/career readiness.. when the student is ready the teacher will appear. Sometimes this happens a lot later. 50ish for me+
Yes! It's insane https://t.co/YdPEeYbSHf
A2: Keeping in mind that Ss are more than just a test score. Looking at ways to meet Ss individual needs.
A3) Students in my community are joining in Hurricane Matthew recovery efforts. Learning to give back is so key.
A3: Students can become involved with their communities in a number of ways. Service Club comes to mind. Giving back is important.
relying on a score to prove you are "ready" is silly ... I passed my Teacher Cert test, but that didn't make me "ready"
A3: We have a Senior STAR Day where seniors complete a service project instead of coming to school. They do some great work!
A3: I think Ss need to be connected to their comm serv in some way. clean up would work for my Ss now.
I was "ready" for college in the classic sense; but I went mindlessly "searching for a passion" & that made me feel lost
A3:We need to expose them to the different opportunities. Have to know what's out there. Capitalize on interests of Ss.
The more we move forward in education the more it resembles we he path to becoming an
Not to mention that those metrics are currently in flux….
A3: be kind. Everyone can use help at some point. Food for an elderly neighbor, cut their grass, help a friend when their down.
Being agile and adaptable is becoming a necessary skill-set in many of today’s shifting work environments.
Do toddlers learn problem solving?
A3 pupils through experiences help promote fair trade and interact club support local charities & other events in local community
QUESTION 3
https://t.co/8cvUZyRLs8
Q3: In , community service is a career readiness indicator. Discuss ways you get students engaged in volunteering
So less is more as long as it goes beyond the superficial and makes a positive difference.
My job doesn't require such rigid behavior. I need creativity and problem solving more than lecture experience.
Agree! I do not prepare Ss to be empty headed note takers I hope they choose a post 2ndry school that challenges them
A3 We provide numerous opportunities then ask r Ss to perform a min. of 20 hours every sem. We rec. those who perform more ea 9wks
Did you find them? I’m still looking..
Does your school count service done for the school community as community service?
They should be leading in an education based on learning. Some are...
have advisory 3x a week, and designing for others not just part of service learning but all courses
We don't do enough of this in our schools...so important and rewarding for Ss and myself
It’s important to let students engage in on how to help community. Develop empathy skills and 4Cs.
A1b Readiness, in most forms, means starting with acuity. This on it’s own and maintained over time encourages finishing.
A3: It's all about empathy & genuinely caring for others. Help Ss "walk in others' shoes" & then provide/create opportunities.
A2 We must inspire our students to be Ready for Life with academic, social, creative skills! https://t.co/VJvF3PDfpi
A1. My opinion: should be college OR career readiness, assuming high school graduation is the milestone at which measured.
Failure can lead to real growth if handled correctly. Reflection is so important in education. https://t.co/YU0RALpA8V
We talk about success...we also need to teach Ss how to adjust to change in plans or realize we might fail at times.
A3. We want Ss 2 give back 2 our community, and use volunteermatch to help them find an org that identifies w/ their career cluster
In the Marines many people aced the "schooling" of jet engine repair, but when it came to action they couldn't perform.
A3: Our students complete community service through several clubs & our seniors have a day of giving back a week before graduation
A3 in my prev HS, all clubs must have service component. Jr's go out for weeklong internships
A3: Comm Service gets Ss ready for adulthood. It's giving back. We should all model & encourage that.
This is a great idea. Wondering how I can adapt it to MS Ss? https://t.co/Oq7nejF4bc
A3: We have a Senior STAR Day where seniors complete a service project instead of coming to school. They do some great work!
Give them opportunities for Genius Hour, and other things GT kids do. Good methods are for all.
A3: community service can help Ss find a passion & purpose; it can give direction which we often lack when "going off to college"
A3: we have community clean up events. Dump the junk. Competing with all schools. S love it and it brings our community together.
A3. In schools, we have a unique opportunity to make a difference and provide service. We need to find ways to get Ss involved.
JOIN ME in on 11/20 for 2 Pre-Conference Workshops:
Genius Hour PBL & Collaborative Gaming
… https://t.co/rw5jTgAKvS
A3: we have a global activism class which helps Ss develop empathy, awareness, collaborative & approach to service.
Amen! https://t.co/3XryI36shr
How can you put a number on "readiness" ... seriously, a test doesn't make you "ready"
A3: 4th gr Ss last year worked w/ Ss in India to create/build solar powered light sources to ship to India. Awesome learning exp!
A3:Golisano-CEO of Paychex- "Attitude over ability - every day. I look for the athletes, people who work to strive and compete"
Agreed. We don't really have an idea of what that will look like.
A3: Students can provide technical assistance to senior citizens. Never too late to become connected https://t.co/AgxE5NMhPl
A3: Get Ss involved with comm. serv. groups at school like NHS or .
My original post was hyperbole. My issue is w/the claim that educ should be primarily about “college & career readiness”.
Nice! https://t.co/HOVFLxY4Jw
A3 Our elementary students conduct one major community service event each year. Start early and it becomes part of the culture.
The goal shouldn't be to "force" Comm. Serv. into curriculum but teach Ss it is an integral part of a well rounded life
A2 The whole child is what we need to look at and how we as educators are helping our students succeed.
A3: Getting T invovled in volunteer projects is a start to getting s involved. It helps to get board support.
I believe careers are what we have when we look in the rearview mirror...life is what happens each day! Learning is the glue
A3: Create opportunities. Then, maybe one good deed will turn into many!
Now that’s just cool. https://t.co/W1Nq0xmGnV
A3: 4th gr Ss last year worked w/ Ss in India to create/build solar powered light sources to ship to India. Awesome learning exp!
yes they need to be guided through the process to have focus & perseverance throwing tantrums in a lab is unacceptable
A3: Community service is an area where we need more work. I must admit that. Add that to my goals.
A3: Our SpEd S's have transition goals on their IEP's, community & local business trips to brings awareness to help them prepare.
Ss serve in our CREW advisory structure, iCivics classes, and expedition work - It's a part of taking action 4 change at our skool
A1 my district is a state leader in CCR. Balanced focus on skills for both (not just college prep) K-12
Solving Meaningful Problems and empowering students! We need more of this! https://t.co/4SMYWFeAAu
have advisory 3x a week, and designing for others not just part of service learning but all courses
A personal finance course should be required in HS & college.
Can't be 'ready' w/o knowing how to plan financially
In Ontario Ss must complete 40 hours of vol. work to graduate. Not much over 4 years. Not sure if this is valuable on the whole?
When teaching a specific skill, formative assessment can help Ts determine readiness and/or make adjustments in teaching.
Preach it https://t.co/jVx16LXto1
relying on a score to prove you are "ready" is silly ... I passed my Teacher Cert test, but that didn't make me "ready"
A3: We have HS S's volunteer to do activities with Elem S's for conference nights and family nights.
To some extent, but most of it is supposed to be done outside of school I believe.
A3 When learning is purposeful & applicable to S lives community engagement is the logical next step.
A(?): We ought 2 pay more attention 2 who Ss are right now than on who we hope them to be down the road.
Why? Is college the best thing for them ... if learning is personalized than it should be "what is best for kid"
Well said Bonnie. I have seen this in your classes>Always challenging students to achieve☝☝ https://t.co/FzWnSMa8M8
Agree! I do not prepare Ss to be empty headed note takers I hope they choose a post 2ndry school that challenges them
A3: Naviance may help track it, but a P needs to lead.
absolutely. Stop loading the resume. Colleges aren't interested in that anymore
And I would agree. But, in many ways, we need a starting point…often, we haven’t gotten to that yet.
A3:our school's working toward greenhouse, serving elders lunches regularly & honoring Veterans who have served. Interact does more
check out or to see how we integrate service and designing for good/others across curriculum
A3. Ss serve n our CREW structure, iCivics classes, and expedition work - It's a part of taking action 4 change at our skool
Me too. I moved to CA to "find myself". Grew up and became a teacher. https://t.co/Rz5HYlx2Q7
I was "ready" for college in the classic sense; but I went mindlessly "searching for a passion" & that made me feel lost
Hey PLN we are already trending #1 on US trends
It's already an engaging chat this morning
Q4: What kinds of personalized and career-specific learning experiences do you provide students?
When Service mindset is a part of your culture Ss grow and perpetuate positivity. Service can not be a mandate - has to be a norm
true Jim! Though understanding global issues & dev solutions in class can help where kids are working out of school.
Great opportunity for 4th graders and something they will never forget. May guide future lives. Relevant and Meaningful
but all high schools have required course to prep kids for college
A lens on being ready to transition to life is what we need to focus on
A4 To use tech as tools. No matter what they end up in they will need to know how to use it & problem solve when it isn't working
A3: One of the key components of our Junior Honor Society is community service. Helping others just as important as grades
Yes. Agree. Schools don’t give time for that, generally speaking.
doesn't need to be formal though. Open the doors for others, carry a bag for elderly. Back to "old" ways right?
If you have learned from your failures then it was a lesson. Nothing learned then it was a failure
-Love this! https://t.co/YnnzN9QfHH
A3:our school's working toward greenhouse, serving elders lunches regularly & honoring Veterans who have served. Interact does more
A3 It is about opportunities and outreach. Connecting curric to the world outside of school allows for comm action to occur
You could maybe have certain locations Ss can help at and bus them there with a chaperone. I'll think about it...
We try to encourage that as well. Ss can earn up to 25% of their service hours within our school community
I would say how could we do one without the other?
I don't like the term "college and career ready" when defining elementary school curriculum.Sounds like we're manufacturing robots.
A3. When getting my Tcert, we were required to complete 2 community service projects...This needs to start from "little guys" K up
A3: worked in a district once and where volunteer hrs were part of graduation requirements! 💯. Just sets Ss on + growth mindset
I understand... Just making the pt that colleges are always the slowest to change instructionally
I'd love to hear more about this project and do something similar with my students!
Its a start but it goes beyond that, Not sure of the answer, Kids of poverty have a huge learning gap. Must solve this
Grades & test scores are a factor; but decision-making & courage to explore your interests are important untestable qualities
yes and just pointing out it doesn't need to be labeled an "AP" or be a silo'd discipline
Totally agree. It will almost become a habit.
Rise and Shine Simmelink - Todays is up your alley. Do tell!
A4: When teaching HS seniors, they researched college and major and did mock college app process.
How might we create that starting point? My experience working with educators (as one) is that mandates don’t work
we have a FabLab ... 21st Century "shop" ... more tech less hands on the tools similar, but not the same
But we have an idea of the skills that will be needed to stay relevant in these environments…
A4: This year my students are participating in to begin to cultivate their curiosity.
Having every student complete a genius hour project would be an awesome initiative.
A3: Our district provides opportunities through student government!
A3) Our district has the LIFE program, where we donate books & have story time for our youngest readers. More at wtsd (dot) org
Budding biologists need to learn a process. So do writers, artists, etc. That’s life. That’s not “C&C ready.”
Yes. Need to have a Growth Mindset https://t.co/zJrFHx1te9
A3: Getting T invovled in volunteer projects is a start to getting s involved. It helps to get board support.
- So true! https://t.co/h8HeIBDB0M
When Service mindset is a part of your culture Ss grow and perpetuate positivity. Service can not be a mandate - has to be a norm
A3: do kids ever get a chance to choose area of interest for comm serve and then reflect how it made them grow?
A2b Parent hat on.. my youngest knew that she wanted something way before she knew what it was [nursing degree].. Want = indicator.
Students flunk out of college because of a lack of soft skills. We must cultivate the 4 C's ... as well as time mgt, and org.
Yes and! https://t.co/YR6JV3nsDS
It’s important to let students engage in on how to help community. Develop empathy skills and 4Cs.
A3 this wk is bully prevention, using a Pay It Forward theme in conjunction w/ info about "If not me then who?"
A4: Advisory periods, internships, & dual credit courses. Would like to see more independent study projects moving forward.

What's the deal with ? Could somebody fill me in, because I'd like to know!
Redefining "college & career readiness" is so important in an era of crushing student loans
A4. Flexible scheduling and leveling n maths and WLang, we grade on proficiency in WLang, and we offer online instruction n math
A4: When I answer a S question of "did you always want to be a T?" No, take time to realize what is impt. to you first
A4: So easy for science. I talk about careers as they come up during class topics. Part of every day discussions.
A3 We are working together with , a rowing club, we have students as paramedics etc.
How might we build a partnership with school and families to build this awareness and communicate it?
Should be feasible. We should be able to do these types of things more frequently.
We have community service as part of our JHS too.
https://t.co/isrCoB5gJR
A3: One of the key components of our Junior Honor Society is community service. Helping others just as important as grades
passion projects more effective than hrs requirements. It's personalized service learning, not chore.
We do love our buzz words to label complex situations. I like to go back to the purpose of education. https://t.co/ixPchG5LFK
I don't like the term "college and career ready" when defining elementary school curriculum.Sounds like we're manufacturing robots.
A4: We are a 1:1 school. SS create ppts, movies, and present to their peers.
What does this look like? Sounds interesting.
Involve your school librarian. We'd love to help
I agree. We must think differently for those who struggle. Parents income is the best indicator of S. success
A4. We partner w/ 850+ businesses to offer internships, and workplace learning experiences. We want Ss to discover their passion
A3 also our s3 pupils or ninth grade take part in YPI project where they have the opportunity to win a charity £3000

Our Ss provide leadership to younger students, and start with service within our school. Where can students lead the change?
Lead with & - The need of the hour. Personal transformation leads to societal wellbeing
Great insight. I have firsties, so that is definitely a great start.
A4 Personalized & career-specific?
Be kind.
Listen.
Learn always.

A4: We host an annual Career Day for all of our students. We also have an awesome science fair https://t.co/4ERP6GjjET
Me too! A political term used to hold $ and power over schools and ed leaders. All about compliance.
A4. It's just as important for Ss to figure out what they don't want to do -- internships, workplace learning experiences help
My highly ed. nephew is working contract to contract with no benefits and $50,000 in loans. We should prepare kids for that.
A4: science has it very easy. Careers surround our content. Daily discussions about them.
Yes - we call this individualized learning time or ILT and happens 3x a week! https://t.co/NzXrx4O8pP
Give them opportunities for Genius Hour, and other things GT kids do. Good methods are for all.
Me too. Adding this to my "To Do in the Future" let!
I teach Ss creativity to answer Qs in words, art, or any other outlet I am sure other do the same
Oh, sure. No questions there. And colleges are going to be facing up to this same issue (“career ready?”) real soon.
Hi Alan make sure you are following the but the chat is going quickly, I did notice your tweet.
Now that's a commitment to service!
A4: All seniors have opp to take "internship" for MP 4 in our HS. many try out future career or do comm serv or work independently

A4: choice, PBL, and opportunities to collaborate make personalization possible. They drift to their career https://t.co/6j7t67HEib
Q4: What kinds of personalized and career-specific learning experiences do you provide students?
A3: So many opportunities exist today. Food banks, nursing homes, hospitals, helping out on the school campus and community.
I am writing about that now. It's the reality of next-gen work. Opportunity v stability.
The community that the school serves needs to agree that facilitating creativity matters. That’s key.
EPIC! Thats awesome! How did you find the time for this project? Was it the grade level or just one class?
A4: We don't do it yet, but I'd like to get more SpEd classes to use Hangouts with businesses, esp. Google since they are in SC too.

Our Ss provide leadership to younger students, and start with service within our school. Where can students lead the change?
Absolutely. Experience is the greatest teacher. Important for Ss to know that changing their mind is not failure.
I'm trying to incorporate teacher genius hour into our PD next year.
A4 Our students make 2 internships outside the school, parents introduce their professions, etc.
Humility, Prayer, Seek God, Reject all wickedness everywhere. THEN I will listen, says God 2 Chron 7:14
I agree, but the system is set up as a pipeline to college defined by mandated testing ..
A4: By the time students exit our middle school they know how to code, use a flight simulator, and design/print on 3D printer
I can write about it, but for now, partnered with to work on the project!
I have seen such creative solutions through PBL, hidden talents emerge
Is this what we want? Oh, and everyone gets a trophy. That irks me as well. (Another day for that soapbox) https://t.co/JF6KF376cV
A4: I love when schools do career days - bring in local businesses to talk, share, etc. great community involvement!
Not always. Many people do it every day without having it as their career. It’s a part.
A4: our GNT program acclimates S w/problem solving opportunities to create Develop and present projects specific to our community
A4 We provide a mentor period for grade 3-5 Ss to pursue personal interest projects that often include community service.

Yes - we call this individualized learning time or ILT and happens 3x a week! https://t.co/NzXrx4O8pP
Give them opportunities for Genius Hour, and other things GT kids do. Good methods are for all.
A3: UN global issues! Good starting point for Ss wanting to make a larger difference in the world! https://t.co/A5Ujw9jDRS
Absolutely! I think educators who like knowing the content can struggle with the flexibility of a skills focus
A4 - opportunities for service, college, career need to fit the needs of individual Ss- have Ss propose their own outside learning
Do not hooked this video ya. Motorcycle crash, crazy bike fail and win compilation | You dare to watching? https://t.co/LMzMV11Fka
A4 also we make sure that pupils get plenty opp to do presentations, team playing , take the lead in whole school events
if he enjoys it, he's successful, right?
it should be a possible and attainable option *if* kids decide to go irrespective of where they come from.
A4: Even w/first graders they are thinking about careers. We research to learn what specific careers require.
Which school in Germany could say this from their pupils? https://t.co/JRUvdv9E3m
A4: By the time students exit our middle school they know how to code, use a flight simulator, and design/print on 3D printer
A4: in elementary we work on making learning authentic, thinking about audience &I connect to real world
G&T students worked with our G&T teacher in small groups. Pull-out from regular classes.
A5. Offer more technical classes that meet graduation requirements
Q5: How can we increase the of students leaving high school w/ internship experiences or industry credentials?
And, give industry assessments so they are actually career ready when Ss leave, teach to those tests in tech classes?
I am frustrated by the claim that the primary goal of education is “college and career”. It should be bigger.
A3 Where/how do students see community service [by peers] being modeled? I didn’t know this was expected. Wonder who does this?
A4: I've had some Ts do genius hour projects. We're building a right now. We have seniors complete service projects.
Or help them be savvy about college or career pathways - set realistic expectations https://t.co/TU7nancXD1
My highly ed. nephew is working contract to contract with no benefits and $50,000 in loans. We should prepare kids for that.
A4: 1:1 devices help open our classroom to so many possibilities!
Emails show CNN, MSNBC, NBC, NYT, and WAPO all paid by the Clinton Foundation. Lapdogs. Boycott! https://t.co/BRs2vQdqA0

A4: By the time students exit our middle school they know how to code, use a flight simulator, and design/print on 3D printer
I say all the time "You can't be what you can't see" - we need to help students see what the possibilities of future can be.
We do. Every one of our students does CS every year. And we have a CS council that is active in the school.
A4: I apply subject(s)/content to entrepreneurial practice. "Do it FOR REAL." Genius hour, write/release, produce, build. Works.
We had a couple of CREWs do this last yr. We placed in underprivledged elem skools. pretty cool!
That's definitely the hardest part and what I've been trying to figure out before I jump in
A5: Make sure Ss have ability to work with local businesses by making connections with them. 1/2
Awesome. I am attempting 20% time this year to accomplish that.
High school I work with has a very successful Construction program. Open to anyone interested.
A4: PBL with authentic choice & audience; students organizing & leading big events in committees based on choice.
Providing Ss opportunities to advocate for their own passions, opportunities and experiences teach 21st C skills in meaningful way
A5: We need to help Ss learn how to make connections. Social skills are lacking with devices in hand 24/7 - need to teach balance
A4) We have tMSU rowing club coming to our school & our team is known as iCrew as we work to help ea other get across finish line
Yes! I would love to see student profiles and portfolios of their creative work from home & school
A5: They have to get some experience before they leave school if they want to hit the ground running. 2/2
A3: I used to facilitate a student council/service learning project each month that tied in w character Ed theme of the month
Question 5
https://t.co/aFP54DZn8i
Q5: How can we increase the of students leaving high school w/ internship experiences or industry credentials?
A5 More classes or clubs that teach & introduce students to industries. We have internships w/senior experience
A4a My kids, at high school’s cusp, did an assignment on college, what they wanted from it. Methinks it wasn’t effective given.. +
A4: Doing projects where Ss work with global peers and dev online communication, collaboration & problem solving skills.
yes! And build inquiry. Get Ss to pose problems and questions and seek responses
A4: Do any of you do Virtual Internships?
A5: Expand community partnerships and help students connect beyond the classroom walls. Teach students to grow their own .
A5: I'm a CTE school. They go on internships, get mentors, & have real-world experience in their tech area. AND are college ready
All of our Ss do internships starting in 9th grade 1 days week and have entrepreneurship track as well https://t.co/rXZive0Suf
I tell ms kiddos we r "learning how learn and to do life together" More dynamic definition of reality IMHO https://t.co/VvFx6FrzZW
I don't like the term "college and career ready" when defining elementary school curriculum.Sounds like we're manufacturing robots.
A5: build it into their coursework. We have a WISE internship in our school as part of senior classes. Present at end to others
A5 I think this can be a very complex issue in communities that do not have companies / manufacturers to handle the demand
A4: There are many options using technology where Ss can build knowledge through authentic connections outside of school.
Q5 - never easy in rural America
A4: 8th graders interview a professional of their choice for their passion projects!
A5: Schools need to know their students passions, strengths, & weaknesses. It's starts at the elementary level and goes through HS
A5: Providing these opportunities while they are in HS. Collaborate w/colleges & businesses. Offer dual credit and internships.
thanks! I’m struggling to find the time in our program - this helps! Did you blog about this experience?
A5. Partnering w/ the community is key. We require construction co. that work w/ us to offer internships to our engineering Ss
A4b That some don’t have [perceived] opportunity post-HS.. Also, teacher picking subject [career goal] disengages..+
It's difficult at HS level when some Ss go home to Ps who don't speak English, and can't get help on homework or papers
HS - advisors (which also meets 3x for 4 mins) helps Ss wrote WOOP goals and plan
Introduce your Ss to your community...if Ss she how connections can be made they can make own opportunities
Jump in. There are research skills, speaking and listening, writing ones and content
Wondering what this would look like https://t.co/QRQz7O5Isb
I'm trying to incorporate teacher genius hour into our PD next year.
I’d like that too, if it’s not mandatory. Maybe an option having equal weight as traditional grades?
Now that is beautiful. I won't be tweeting a pic of my laundry, which is my vista! Ha! Thanx for sharing on !
Doesn’t the internet and the digitization make it easier?
Definitely! Last year we had a Lunch & Learn Club run by our G&T teacher. Career professionals came in to talk w/kids.
A4 Big fan of this. Help students transition to using applicable skills. https://t.co/fdfoGnxaJO
A4. We partner w/ 850+ businesses to offer internships, and workplace learning experiences. We want Ss to discover their passion
A4c I remember each of my 3 daughters expressing dismay at having to do what teacher wanted rather than freelance their own idea..
A4: just yesterday 4th graders were discussing careers and ties to multiple intelligences. Lots of great ideas!
Gaps are huge and are in place by 3rd grade. This is the biggest unsolved problem in ed.
google hangouts and YouTube live can connect them at least. Our entrepreneur class uses it
yes! We do need to provide more dual credit w colleges & career centers!
A5: Look for opp for Ss to network and work on projects outside of school. Senior project does this!
A5: You have to focus on the CTE teachers as well and develop a strong program that students see as valuable.
I teach 6th grade. I teach growth mindset, habits of mind and use book Classroom Habitudes through ELA &SS
Jump in- your Ss will love it! Mine begged for our weekly genius hour but some struggled to find their pas… https://t.co/NtVaa2GzFn
That's definitely the hardest part and what I've been trying to figure out before I jump in
A5: Always wondering about equity with internships Ss from families or communities with resources have huge advantages
Yes. Start w/leadership. Create the environment. Even moving beyond growth, innovative mindsets, to an exponential one
Think outside "local." I just introed a RI cosmo student to a West Coast CEO releasing a product. This is world-wide
Teach students to leverage their strengths, mitigate (not ignore) weaknesses.
Thank you for saying that. Exactly 100% right.
A5) First, we must incorporate vocational and internship/apprenticeship curricula as part of the solution, and not demonize them.
A5: Ensuing flexibility & choice of options/schedule is key to increasing access to industry certifications & internships.
A5 Give Ss ownership of projects (from planning thru wrapup ), presentations, assemblies.
This is why comm is so important when students transition grades/schools. This info has to be passed on for Ss.
A5 An outstanding way in NJ is the experience students at our county vo-tech high schools receive. Great programs
The internet changes/equalizes everything. I work w people all over the world. So can (so should) my students
A5. The word "credentials" is key. What can students do? Where have they done it? Who can stand with them on this beside their Ts?
A5: partnerships with local businesses. Our HS has one with a local business where S work within the school day on site.
A4: Providing authentic opportunities for students to share work on YouTube and Twitter!
A5: make internship a course for all Ss before they graduate. Helps them with so many skills even if don't choose that field
love this idea! We try to do this too. It's a lot of coordination but really authentic personalization and learning.
A5 graciously offers his time to our club and provides insight on his industry
So true! https://t.co/WjQMEcUWq9
I don't like the term "college and career ready" when defining elementary school curriculum.Sounds like we're manufacturing robots.
More joint HS/College/trade school programs?
I love the idea of a CS council school wide! Will definitely bring the idea to my school.
Yes. Knowing your audience helps vertically align curriculum, procedures, & policies for greater resultsv https://t.co/qCzrINp6LB
A5: Schools need to know their students passions, strengths, & weaknesses. It's starts at the elementary level and goes through HS
Yes - love the 4 supporting this - we do StrengthsQuest program https://t.co/6Q2OHywBoo
A5: Schools need to know their students passions, strengths, & weaknesses. It's starts at the elementary level and goes through HS
Agree. Get Ss involved and interested early.
A5: Increase our partnerships with universities and colleges and also see a bridging between secondary and higher ed curricula
Middle school Ss need to observe the experiences of HS Ss to understand opportunities ahead... Invite Ss in to mentor
A5: Maybe the guidance counselor could help create relationships with local entities??
A5 make it easier to connect kids with opportunities to work authentically w businesses throughout school experience
Give students the challenge to identify their own opportunities in these communities. Teach them .
A5: help Ss make connections with professionals & help them organize portfolios, write resumes, practice interview skills
Whether Hillary finds 3 woman to lie or 300 women to tell the same lie... It doesn't make the "LIE" the Truth, does it?
President Obama- where affordable health care is unaffordable and clandestine CIA ops are leaked
Our trades focus typically at least assumes an associates degree
What do you think we should say instead? Developing Future Thinker? Empowering Students?
Schools need to provide opportunities for students to discover passions, see bigger pictures & uncover what is there.
A5: Schools need to partner with businesses in the community to bridge this gap https://t.co/akDUedL9EX
Question 5
https://t.co/aFP54DZn8i
Q5: How can we increase the of students leaving high school w/ internship experiences or industry credentials?
Go check out . They’re awesome folks.
A5: We have a Future Teachers of America club at the middle school level. Important to ignite this passion early.
"Throwing tantrums" at any job is unacceptable, soft skills are transferrable to any job/career
Yes. But think 20 years back… The internet gives new opportunities to students in rural areas.
A5. Last year Ss completed 2,000 workplace learning experiences. These opportunities help shaped their futures
"In my 8 years teaching at an IB World School, this is by far the most 'IB thing' we've ever done."https://t.co/HDjVA1Nt4O
A5: You have to educate the Ss that CTE courses aren't just electives, they're valuable coursework that train real-world skills.
And those two employers help out as much as they can. It gets overwhelming https://t.co/Q065hccyDb
very true. Sometimes small towns only have one or two options at best. Equally frustrating to show those students there’s more to it
A5 Coding, Google AdWords, and design thinking all provide opps for S's to partner with small businesses to solve real probs
I like this concept
https://t.co/zLFXglQpcI
Give students the challenge to identify their own opportunities in these communities. Teach them .
Where do you start w/ those Ss if you truly want to help them get into college? Where do you even start?
A5 we nd to have a prog employers can sign up & offer meaningful internships/work placements, I spk to contacts & get opps for stu
Q5: provide more opportunities for students to earn industry certifications as early as middle school.
Who spearheads that coordination between the school & community https://t.co/GemxvH6hHp
A4. We partner w/ 850+ businesses to offer internships, and workplace learning experiences. We want Ss to discover their passion
I live this. We call ourselves "Career & Technical Education" not "voc." Words = mission. We have biotech, engineering
A5: Partner with local businesses, offer various courses to coach the students in this opportunity. https://t.co/7ZrCR685dD
"Developing flexible, nimble, creative thinkers ready to succeed at a variety of challenges?"
Would b interesting if we could do Ind Graduation Plans starting n elem skools so we can work on this
have done this & it's great. Requires a lot of coordination & Ss need to learn how to communicate w mentor.
Yes, every S should participate in something, not a select few. ALL students are our future https://t.co/5HAVLXPXLd
All of our Ss do internships starting in 9th grade 1 days week and have entrepreneurship track as well https://t.co/rXZive0Suf
Only one part. We want functional, happy, full fledged citizens that can vote. :) But CC pays bills :(
Yes - another nonsense term like 'secondary ready'. They should be ready to support ALL learning styles.
A5: Many times community want to help & don't know where to start. Create shared vision & they make impact from the start
A6 Stay involved and help wherever I can!
- What a great program! https://t.co/5ziK3JPtKZ
A4 We provide a mentor period for grade 3-5 Ss to pursue personal interest projects that often include community service.
How about "success ready." That takes away my judgementalism as to what their path should be.
A5a Encourage Ss to make stuff [up?]. Opportunities to create [self-express] open up possibilities. My HS [circa ’70-4] had “shop”+
looks like Q8 is right in your wheelhouse Mike!
A5: schools need to build community connections & bring in services as much as possible. Elem can host community days to intro idea
in more ways than just finding a career too!
A5: Exposure to different subjects and outlets helps to create well-rounded people
My elementary school partnered w/local univ. on an invasive species PBL. Eye-opening for all participants!
Q5: Bring in experts from various existing industries where manpower is needed and will be needed. Ss need to hear them.
Sure. If I thought “college and career readiness” was about soft skills, I wouldn’t complain.
My goal for video class is for Ss to create commercials for local businesses. Make connections.
It is getting to this understanding that the adaptive challenges we now face far outweigh the technical problems.
And how to select one that'll stick with them long-term. Not just find a fake uncle for a project
A5 Starts with district vision & community outreach.Hands on learning helps kids decide right path for them https://t.co/wTQbyy0Ylv
Q5: How can we increase the of students leaving high school w/ internship experiences or industry credentials?
A5 clubs S's can get involved in internships will help them when they get into college and be college and career ready!
One of our teachers runs it.
Awesome! It should be every school that has these opportunities and for all kids Uni bound or not. https://t.co/c5oSoOyodD
I live this. We call ourselves "Career & Technical Education" not "voc." Words = mission. We have biotech, engineering
I'm working with teachers. Don't want it to be "another thing to do"
Makes sense. Should HS work on joint programs? Can get trade at community college.
Free thinkers, for one. Not sure we're allowing that to occur all the time. https://t.co/hSJwG92DqR
What do you think we should say instead? Developing Future Thinker? Empowering Students?
Nice! Use of experts is always great 2 hook Ss in the content!
A5: some schools nearby do post AP courses for SRs to gain certification in certain areas, like Cisco...
I wish we still have "bring your child to work day" this was formative exp for me as a child.
Education serves too many masters. We’ve focused on the economic one. That choice has consequences.
mthayer_nj urbie I love the idea of a CS council school wide! Will definitely bring the idea to my school.
This is no joke--any HS kid today's an expert in their area. Show how to convert it to $/opportunity, and it's a career
A5: Have Ss work on passion projects through out and collect evidence in a portfolio to be presented as a capstone at end of 12th
critical thinking and problem solving, other soft skills are essential life skills
A5. We've also seen Ss complete 1,500 career certifications. Getting these experiences & opportunities in HS are so important!
I'll check it out as soon as this chat is done! Would appreciate hearing your experience.
Q6. I think implementing structures that address all 3 modes of Stud achievement - Content skills, High Quality Work, & Character
great idea to engage teachers in this! Find their passion and build just like with Ss
A5 - give students time to walk n others shoes. Imagine working in a store, farming, with an electrician, builder... for a day
On this note – the reviews of most curricula against the CCSS on = Scarier. Than. Halloween.
https://t.co/7cqF1q2r01
I'd rather start from PK and grow upwards. Self Directed learning, Student centered.
Financial literacy wasn't taught when I was in school & I went thru calculus. It's a good tool to link math to world
For the rest of this chat, I'm learning from We need more ideas for our SpEd S's to help them prepare & stay motivated.
Transform the "vo-tech" perception from only career ready to college prep... Drafting to engineering major
great point. Once they get out there and do it they might change their mind.
Agreed. As Ts we have to shrug off our own bias' about pathways of learning before the Ss can do the same. https://t.co/119xggfehs
How about "success ready." That takes away my judgementalism as to what their path should be.
Inspiring students to be critical thinkers and engaged life long learners is important. Edu does not end at College.
Q6: What will you do to ensure your state includes a multimetric definition of college and career readiness?
Yes! This, I can live with. And kind, too. That would be perfect. https://t.co/IWpEIiOH1m
"Developing flexible, nimble, creative thinkers ready to succeed at a variety of challenges?"
A5: Our HS runs an all school CTE day. HS CTE showcased, local business & post secondary attend/exhibit. Also bring in MS.
When leadership = traditional mindsets can teachers & students lead a grassroots movement to exponential mindsets?
A4: avoid digital silos. know my Ss, skill needs and provide project based, cooperative, skill rich, autonomy, mastery, purpose
But we have to stop tracking "uni" vs "not." I know 6-figure CEOs that didn't go to college and PhDs that can't function
A5 Vocational Schools are so important, also try and connect HS Seniors with local business see if they can do internships.
A5x Being a parent [and generally clueless] I’d ask Ss. At each “This won’t work” from an S use to remedy/mitigate.
Scored in the 48th, 86th and 86th percentiles on my SAT's.
For me it always goes back to what works best. Hatties work is a great place to start.
Love that idea and the name.
I started this year with goal to lead to genius passion project
oh ..I gotta see your list of 4C's!
This is not the focus at my school, maybe I'm just lucky, but I think many schools are that way
Can it start outside the classroom to show power? 1 hr after school 2x a wk?
A1: Fully informed about positives and negatives of after hs choices and having explored various options w hands-on experience
leaders control the schedule, time, money, and decision making process…… grass needs to be nourished to thrive….
A5 Build connections within the community via a collaborative brunch several times per yr. "Partners in building readiness"
Yes. So let’s talk about this as “readiness for life” instead of “college and career”.
it's amazing how many skills get built in when teaching units contextually
Yes. Involve your librarian. Often we can "sneak" these in. Must make class time for this too.
We have a Center for Career Discovery that goes into the community 2 find relevant work opportunities for Ss & employers
exactly! The vetting was a lot of work. some more successful than others. Hard to scale. Need an app!
A6: Implement some of them in the classroom, talk to admins and enlist their help in getting it to the top.
Which is why leadership is often a starting point…create the environment.
LAST QUESTION for today! https://t.co/tJPby3K5ys
Q6: What will you do to ensure your state includes a multimetric definition of college and career readiness?
yes, readiness for life in an inspiriting topic for all students.
Absolutely agree. Just like in reading or math or science Ts need to model and then "let go" - that's the risk we fear
Our local chambers are great resources!
A6 I guess I have a second chance at getting it right [I’m a parent, not a teacher].. .. i know [now] to ask the Q of Ts.
A6: Be involved in the process and decisions. Can't sit back idle.
I like it! (Might be a bit long for my 1st graders) its the challenge of labels in todays learning
Especially for Ss in preprof and arts areas! https://t.co/rJ6QMVVoqR
Q6: What will you do to ensure your state includes a multimetric definition of college and career readiness?
It can. Clubs, etc. But what about all of that downtime/lost time during day?
Yes! Add Kind = Nailed it!
A5: Refocus our priorities at times for students. Grades cannot be the sole measure of success for a hs degree.
Many schools focus on getting their kids into the “right” colleges. That’s an economic driver.
A5: PBL allows Ss to develop the connections on their own with community for future internships
A2: leadership, activities and sports make a positive impact too. Soft-skills are important piece here. https://t.co/PKfdAv51UJ
A2. Students shouldn't be reduced to a single test score- we look at community service, internship experience, industry credentials
Context? We want context? :) (Absolutely.)
Sat chat needs to be longer. It goes too fast!
I like how you are empowering the students to own the path judgement free!
yes... We need to grow Ss soft skills badly! https://t.co/DXBd5e3wxE
leaders control the schedule, time, money, and decision making process…… grass needs to be nourished to thrive….
Can't believe it went by so quickly!
is that a program or a group? I like to know more about it. Link?
A6: We need to connect w/ more, share, model & discuss with school board, parents, community, HS teachers & students. More choice
A6: I write about this stuff, so I have my soapbox. However, policywise, nothing. That's not even close to w/in my control.
Maybe Zombie Apocalypse ready? Life skills: leader, communicator, resourceful and fearless. https://t.co/MLmXiI14nn
So great for kids to see people passionate about their careers, and have a chance to ask Qs.
A6) Our state DOE has an amazing talent pool of folks completely dedicated to this. They are always helping all in need!
I'd be happy if students can do what we say they can do. Too many take remedial classes.
A6: Start small. Begin in your school by creating the meaning of C&C and begin making some noise! https://t.co/kQSKJ0w1Wo
Options 2 meet Ss needs were started in late 90s during Career Readiness discussions via PBL then went by wayside
A6 RIGHT NOW is the time to engage with ur state. New policies for are being written and they require feedback
Awesome! I would love to read about it!
A6 unless you change mindset of education authority re priorities ,will always be an uphill struggle, schools can only do so much
I agree with you. Just that Ts will buy in once they see it working first hand
That's what I'm thinking. Mostly debating the outcome I want them to produce.
I agree. This isn’t about policy changes - it’s about changing a culture. Forcing people to answer “what matters?”
Yes, let's look at multiple views of student achievement - character & quality work!
A5: Ss need dedicated time during the day for internships. It can't just be extracurricular.
Hitler Jeopardy
PUNISHED HOW?

WHO IS BILL CLINTON?
A6: Advocate that Career Readiness is not just one measure.
A6) College and career readiness tends to service the edreform crowd. I rather ensure/help students develop into lifelong learners.
A6: Encourage as much student voice in the process as possible.
A6: It starts in the classroom. At least, it should.
Thanks:) It's relationship building & living what I teach. It's my story, they see. I'm public/transparent
A6. We can continue talking to state ed leaders to advocate for multimetric definition; test scores are not the only measurement
Thanks for a thoughtful conversation this morning, as always!
not all schools are that way, schools should be dream factories -with a focus of course
You know nothing eats up Hillary and Demtards more than not being able to just murder Anonymous and Wikileaks.
haha! Yes it's scary&takes a lot of planning & forethought, but can teach so many skills
A5. We need to expand the definition of student achievement. Chk this link out for more info https://t.co/f1pMU5FVUo
Thank you for a great kick-off
True. But too many focus on test scores and other “measurable” outcomes. Kids. Aren’t. Data. Points.
I was talking about the teachers if they have to do a genius hour project.
I have 0 control over the stuff chasing me away: evals, standardization, bad policy, this I can just inspire my kids
We are fine and make it work. But others who are more rural will always struggle in this area. https://t.co/8PvakZrcEH
Can they have virtual internships? Hit up your PLN for mentors ;)
Have them come up with a 'need'. Then fill that need w/ product
Wow Matt, I never thought of all these nuances! Well done!

A6 Bringing more awareness to it through state/ national organizations like & https://t.co/cPOhhwd0KS
Q6: What will you do to ensure your state includes a multimetric definition of college and career readiness?
so true! Less conformity and more empowerment!
Thanks for a great . Taking my own kids to be a part of an emerg response drill in community. Careers in action and giving back.
A6: To do this we must advocate that college & career readiness is a vision, not a test score.
A5: check w/ local or voc tech about industry certifications/certificates. But beware these change w/ time.
In Entrepreneurship Sts dev authentic prob-solving and student biz skills; MBTI teams enhance their efforts.
Q6. A great question! Could be another ! I'd like to see more partnerships between districts 2 start this Moving!
great PD idea because it's differentiated and meaningful!
Do you have data to support your assertions? :)
A6 To quote the late great Whitney Houston: "I believe the children are our future, give them love and let them lead the way"
Don't miss as hosts tomorrow night 10/16 8pm CT on "What Would You Do?

Have them come up with a 'need'. Then fill that need w/ product
A6: be the voice for your Ss. Don't sit back and watch
Thank you ! Love participating in when I can. Lots of great, passionate educators being a voice 4 positive change!
Good point. Is there a need that's too small though? Like, need to contact home more. T then sends a newsletter.
And surely I am with you always to the very end of the age.
Happy to discuss this w anyone who needs thoughts. We have email/phones/skype. I've hooked kids up internationally
. I dislike "college and career ready" at the high school level as well-it's a cynical and sad way to look at education
In our Ed system Ss who struggles economically have to "beat the odds" why should any kid have to beat odds
Thank you for starting my weekend with an engaging discussion about the future of our Ss & inevitably society
In high school, ALL juniors were pulled out of class for conferences on how to apply for college. One path push much?
