Hi, I’m studying to become a teacher at Colorado State University. I was wondering how SWAAAC comes into play when a teacher needs access to assistive technologies for a student? #atchat

A1: Seems like I'm reading manuals for devices, and Medicaid funding websites more than books. #ATPLife#ATChat definitely want and need IDEAS! #whenischrisbbookout?
I am working on getting my certification to teach secondary social studies. I have a bachelor's in History and am working on the teaching classes. #atchat

It is awesome you are interested in assistive technology. Have you checked out any of the commlit history materials? If so what do you think of them. They have text-to-speech tools built in. I just learned about them. #atchat
A1: I am reading Lifelong Kindergarten now as part of the #LifelongKDG chat on Thurs nights @ 7pm. I haven't made the chat yet but the book is great so far! #ATchat
So far, haven't had to use much AT in my classroom, but as a language teacher (Latin), can anyone recommend any resources I can use to be better prepared? #atchat
Actually, I'm a bit of a Luddite, I'm afraid. Not the biggest techie, but curious by nature. I've never heard of commlit! Do you have a link for them? #atchat
A2: we had a guest speaker discussing assistive technologies in our education class, and the main takeaway I had was that assistive technologies help students mobility, communication and participating in a classroom #ATchat
Hi Corey- text to speech and speech to-text on a device can help. It all depends on what your students need access to in order to be successful in your class. I’m curious as to what would that be? #ATChat
Hello #ATchat .. sorry I was at a course sign up for my son's Senior year at his high school. Just came in now. A1 My reading material has been #ATchat :-)
A2 - Joyful Learning - love learning from Paula Kluth and Judy Wilis #ATchat Biggest takeaways are the need to promote joy in the classroom for learning that sticks.
Hi all- I’ve been slowly reading Giving Voice: mobile communication, disability as inequality by Meryl Alper. I wouldn’t call it AAC directive but there are many good points raised regarding the social context. #ATchat
Our guest speaker discussed a certain technology for a student that can control computer functions with their eyes, which helped one student who could not use his arms participate and excel in a computer design class #atchat
Hi Hilary, so far there hasn't been a need. But want to make sure my class is ready should the need arise. Most of what we do is reading/translating. Not much in the way of conversational Latin. #atchat
Using things like backchannels such as Today’s Meet allows conversations that from those hesitant to speak up #atchat or who need Technology to support thought formation.
Researchers like myself need to work collaboratively with schools from the conception of a research idea to the end. Also, we need to make sure we join chats like #atchat so we know what is happening in the field outside academia.
Speaking of Hawking - watch The Theory of Everything (amazon video rental/purchase...maybe some other places) watching it again right now, in tribute. #ATchat

Interesting thought abut those hesitant to speak up. I understand that. But how can technology support thought formation? I'm afraid you've got me there! :) #atchat
We focused on assistive technologies for students with disabilities, but I feel like for students who do not want to speak in class, which could be for several reasons outside of having a disability, I think some technologies could be used to involve those students more #atchat
Our school (suburbs of Harrisburg, PA) is working on going 1:1, but most technology is currently accessed in computer labs and/or the resource room. A few students have personal AT devices. We don't use much tech in Latin class (yet). #atchat
A2 #ATchat - Funny, I'm giving a presentation on inclusion in two weeks for the Competence and Confidence, Partners in Policymaking parent/consumer group. Bringing in AT and UDL as cornerstone pillars of good inclusion practices.

So far- 1: lack of culturally appropriate voices for AAC is a barrier to implementation that manufacturers are overlooking. 2. iPad cases cause a lot of grief that could be mitigated. 3. How families talk about AAC devices varies widely. #ATchat
By asynchronous, I suppose you mean the students can respond in their own best time. Interesting. What are some programs/processes you use in your classroom to facilitate interaction? #atchat
Do you use DuoLingo? Keep thinking about speech to text and text to speech for alternate ways to access. Also @Flipgrid would be just cool for collaborative conversations. #ATChat
We actually use asynchronous twitter chats for my education class to discuss readings we do for class, which seems like a cool way to involve all students #atchat
I will get to work right away. Anyone feel free to suggest research questions. I am mainly focused on text-to-speech and reading comprehension for students with dyslexia. #atchat
I am reading The Visual Connection by Dr. Bobbe Baggio. I learned that almost 85% of students are visual learners and instruction should be geared with this in mind. #atchat
We are trying to speed up this process. Also by focusing on individual features of the technology (like speech rate, highlighting) rather than specific products this makes the research applicable across a more products. #atchat
There’s an entire chapter from which I’ll quote: “her new iPad case enabled her to demonstrate her competence, whereas her old school district had presumed her incompetence.” The case didn’t protect well so she could only use the iPad (her AAC system) sitting at a desk. #ATchat
I had that happen. By the time my book was published, the tool that was used to conduct the training had been scrapped. But the outcomes still live, I suppose. #ATChat

I am a student, I’m studying to be a teacher, I go to Colorado State! Yes we do the readings and then have a twitter chat and our professor can see our responses to see that we read what we were supposed to, and gives everyone a chance to respond at their own rate #atchat
#atchat Here are my ?..1.How much time using TTS is needed to see comprehension gains? 2.Are there certain characteristics of students to see remedial impacts of TTS? 3.For students where comprehension w/ human reader >than TTS, how much time needed with TTS so human=TTS?
#atchat the technology is moving SO fast! We need to validate faster sources as acceptable resources, such as blogs or resources like @PrAACticalAAC we know they are hreat, but publishers dont agree

Well, it’s her dissertation & it’s good qualitative research. It’s a little dry in parts & there are some things I’m cringing at as an AAC SLP but there are some great insights as well. #ATchat

#atchat I talk in terms of genres. This helps avoid all the trends and shifts. Plus over the last 30+ years the key genres that students need haven't changed (AAC, word prediction, TTS, etc)

I love it! My only challenge is it doesn’t work on older iPads. Currently use it to have students make multi sensory representations of Latin/Greek roots, prefixes and suffixes for review. #atchat with @OGwithTLC

Yes, because it wasn’t in a sturdy case & they were concerned about the iPad breaking. It’s ridiculous but that’s far from the only story I’ve heard like it. #ATchat
While I love proven tools to implement, sometimes we can’t wait for the full vetting process. My classes are often my test runs, kids will be so honest on value of tools. #ATchat
I've had T's get really angry because I've disabled Safari on some AAC iPads. Just proves that they are not using it for communication as much as they should be :( #ATchat
#atchat Thanks...I agree I consistently hear more success stories because we can quantify the change with uPAR @DonJohnstonInc . I love the combination of the qualitative with quantitative! They go together like PB and chocolate!

The only thing I have open is the camera for on demand pictures. They’re locked down so that they’re used with the intention they were recommended for. #ATChat

In fairness, I have some older AAC users who are great at googling pictures to add to their systems. Or to clarify something in conversation (ex from today- where the U of Memphis baseball team plays). But that took time & maturity. #ATchat
#ATChat Thanks for a great chat. Happy Pi day to everyone. So proud of student walkouts/voice today in opposition of gun violence. RIP Stephen Hawking. g'nite!
The book addresses family’s ideas about iPads for specific purposes as well. It’s not nearly as clear cut in the home & parents can be frustrated with keeping things too black & white. #ATchat
