HNY everyone welcome to #asechat the focus tonight is #ASEConf please share anything you found interesting or useful for the first 20 minutes
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator Jan 8 @ 3:04 PM EST
I don’t think so, she did mention the PISA OECD findings about use of enquiry lead learning compared with direct instruction #asechat

I finally got up to speed with microscale chemistry with @UncleBo80053383 . Huge scope with this...he even demonstrated paramagnetism! #asechat
    In reply to @NeedhamL56, @UncleBo80053383
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator Jan 8 @ 3:05 PM EST
Read Amanda’s speech for yourself https://t.co/RJkKRJW6gT rather than another interpretation #asechat
  • ViciaScience Jan 8 @ 3:05 PM EST
I was at the conference and must have missed this bit. What I heard sounded just like this DfE transcript https://t.co/qVDyqk5d9H #ASEChat
    In reply to @IanMcDaid, @AnnMroz, @tes
  • oboelizzy Jan 8 @ 3:05 PM EST
I think she simply quoted PISA - without any real understanding at all IMO #asechat
  • hecharden Jan 8 @ 3:06 PM EST
I got a chance to try out some microscale chemistry @CLEAPSS workshop. Loved this idea for comparing different indicators..actually clearer for learning in microscale in my view #asechat
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator Jan 8 @ 3:06 PM EST
My favourite biology bit was a list to @SAPS_News and their giant cells in red peppers, great for showing turgor, and Osmotic potential expts #asechat
  • oboelizzy Jan 8 @ 3:08 PM EST
#asechat so much to choose from, got so tired! - loved everything! Best bit was talking to my #asefamily !!
  • ViciaScience Jan 8 @ 3:08 PM EST
The most important part of #ASEConf for me were presentations by Gatsby on Good Practical Science #asechat
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator Jan 8 @ 3:09 PM EST
If you are a presenter from #ASEConf do upload your presentations/ notes to the SCHED https://t.co/ZuplGGvyIR so you don’t need to email them out to everyone #asechat
  • oboelizzy Jan 8 @ 3:10 PM EST
#asechat Keith Ross-difficult ideas in chem-interesting to hear from someone with so much experience which helped to confirm I am on right track with my research re teaching particle ideas of matter in pri and sec
  • MarcNeesam Jan 8 @ 3:10 PM EST
I found the session from the President of the @NSTA interesting on how schools in America approach enquiry. Subtle differences to UK ‘norm’ (and it was engaging to boot!) #ASEchat
  • ViciaScience Jan 8 @ 3:10 PM EST
The Schedule tool for sorting the #ASEConf programme was a great success for me in planning, and in helping presenters estimate audience #asechat
  • oboelizzy Jan 8 @ 3:11 PM EST
#asechat wish I had been able to get to this - think the NGSS well worth looking at
    In reply to @MarcNeesam, @NSTA

  • hrogerson Jan 8 @ 3:11 PM EST
Always love the @SAPS_News experiment. This one was very satisfying! #asechat
  • ViciaScience Jan 8 @ 3:12 PM EST
There are language issues - what language is appropriate in assessment items may not be the same as language used in classroom explanations #asechat

  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator Jan 8 @ 3:13 PM EST
I’m not sure we’d need to ask @theASE how these are shared. There is a link on @RSC_EiC to a recording of Amanda #asechat

  • oboelizzy Jan 8 @ 3:15 PM EST
#asechat really great conversation session with Shirley Simon and Pete Sorensen on researching in sci ed - somehow we need to get this to a much wider audience
  • ViciaScience Jan 8 @ 3:16 PM EST

  • oboelizzy Jan 8 @ 3:18 PM EST
#asechat interesting idea - sched was a great tool - we need to feedback the pros and cons - things that can be improved

As always, #ASEConf was a good place for meeting old acquaintances #asechat
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator Jan 8 @ 3:19 PM EST

#ASEchat Well, actually I had worked it out from the names of attendees. It finished well, thanks Richard. It was good to have so many attending—think we could have rolled that session out a couple of times
    In reply to @ViciaScience
  • ViciaScience Jan 8 @ 3:20 PM EST
Should @theASE sell 'acquaintance only' tickets for those guys that sit at the coffee bar in the exhibition with the sole purpose of chatting to old colleagues? #ASEChat
  • cleverfiend Jan 8 @ 3:20 PM EST
My favourite piece of feedback "Lost a bit of time when you went off topic talking about how autistic kids go off topic..." Sounds like every single lesson observation I've ever had telling me I talk too much! #ASEchat
  • ViciaScience Jan 8 @ 3:21 PM EST
I agree - there is plenty more we could do with technology in science teaching. But few English teachers of science there? #asechat
    In reply to @JonScott46

absolutely - agree completely - a mistake an awful lot of people make unfortunately - I would refer them to first chapter of Pupil as Scientist by Ros Driver #asechat !!!
    • Janroweljmu Jan 8 @ 3:19 PM EST
And conflated enquiry with discovery learning and made assumptions that this is always what practical science implies. As if the only alternative to direct instruction is to attempt to find out for yourself with no guidance . Fundamentally misunderstands what teaching is!

#asechat Michael Reiss talking about where we have come since beyond 2000 and questions about where we should be going to was really excellent

    In reply to @hrogerson
  • JonScott46 Jan 8 @ 3:25 PM EST
#ASEchat few, sadly. I'm sure some very good work has been going on to improve both the membership and attendance, but feel it needs a bit of lateral thinking—how do we get our science teachers along to the BEST CPD on the planet?
    In reply to @ViciaScience
  • cleverfiend Jan 8 @ 3:25 PM EST
Let's not get off-topic talking about me going off-topic talking about students going off-topic otherwise the universe might collapse in a recursive loop #asechat

Well for once we didn't all sit there and agree which was a nice change. I may be a voice of dissent but I much prefer a proper debate #asechat

  • ViciaScience Jan 8 @ 3:27 PM EST
largely supportive of need to reexamine curriculum at KS4. Concern about social background determining access to science. Some debate around 'specialist teacher' status #ASEChat

#ASEchat Were they? I often get the impression that practising teachers are a minority, but maybe that is more to do with my choice of sessions. It would be good to see a detailed analysis of attendance. Anecdotal observations just not scientific :)

#asechat EBI for #aseconf I think registration would have been better in the CTL as there was more room and lockers/tables to get yourself sorted (plus on Fri the schools exhibition)
  • oboelizzy Jan 8 @ 3:37 PM EST
agree completely - also alienates teachers and adds to the retention problem in sec sci #asechat

  • oboelizzy Jan 8 @ 3:42 PM EST
Still think those comments need an awful lot of unpicking - we need to look at fundamental concepts that underpin all of chem, phys, bio more and conceptual development. not convinced about additional load if it is done correctly #asechat
    In reply to @doc_kristy, @ViciaScience, @hrogerson
  • hecharden Jan 8 @ 3:42 PM EST
I was puzzled by that. Always taught as B, C and P in my experience. I tutoring a girl.being taught triple chem by a biologist. More to do with availability of relevant subject specialists in this case. #asechat
    In reply to @doc_kristy, @oboelizzy, @ViciaScience, @hrogerson
  • doc_kristy Jan 8 @ 3:42 PM EST
Because they choose to teach elsewhere? Because the Head doesn't feel so bad adding it to a PE teacher's timetable? Because they're not attracted to the profession at all because they don't want to be teaching far out of their comfort zone? #asechat

  • doc_kristy Jan 8 @ 3:47 PM EST
Fewer periods needed = job cuts, most likely to leave = chem/physics. Fewer periods means it can be accommodated by non specialists more easily, squeezed into a tt. I speak from experience here not speculation, experience of schools in difficult circumstances #asechat

  • JonScott46 Jan 8 @ 3:48 PM EST
Key idea I latched onto was: separate identity of the subjects and their teachers is important; the unique flavours of the disciplines. Maybe it's more about this than the particular subject content or how much of that (arbitrary?) content is included in a course #ASEchat
    In reply to @doc_kristy, @ViciaScience, @oboelizzy, @hrogerson
  • doc_kristy Jan 8 @ 3:48 PM EST

Hotels have to agree to large block bookings. In some areas not interested. I work in HQ sometimes so pick these things up. Way more complicated than us delegates ever understand.#asechat

#asechat also liked at Liverpool that I had HE teaching focused staff in my session (wave @hlnvghn) given my interests I like to blur the boundaries between school and HE teaching

I love plant science! There’s loads of excellent resources from saps too! In my experience I think teachers believe “students won’t relate to plants”, “students think plants are boring”.
