Welcome to #MEMSPAchat
STARTING NOW!!!
Let's start with introductions...
I'm tonight's MODERATOR, Mike Domagalski. @ECSDSchools Middle School Principal
I'm tonight's #MEMSPAchat MODERATOR.
For those new, look to me for Questions.
Then answer in a A1, A2, A3... Questions starting in 2 minutes. etc... format.
Matt McCullough from Kalamazoo MI can lucky enough to have the cool title of "Director of Innovation in Teaching & Learning" for @SCSEagles1#memspachat
My Michigan journey started in Royal Oak (Beaumont hospital), then took me to Clawson (K), Warren (1st grade), Gaylord (2nd-12th grades) and finally to Marquette (college at NMU). #MEMSPAchat
A Culture of Innovation begins with the freedom to try new things and learn from mistakes.
Shedding the perfectionist attitude is critical! #MEMSPAchat
A1: We lead a culture of innovation by asking Questions & not giving Answers. How can we improve? What's best for this learner? Who can help with this? #MEMSPAchat
Michelle Allen from E. P. Clarke Elementary in St. Joe. So excited to hang out with my #MEMSPAchat colleagues for a night of learning! My PLN is awesome!!
A2: Allococate resources-Line item in budget for innovation ! Have an optional Deeper Learning Cohort going combined with our High School. Talk about it. Model it. #memspachat
A1: First and foremost, I follow the work of @DonWettrick who wrote Pure Genius. We have to build in time for students to be innovative & Don's book shows teachers and school leaders how to do that: https://t.co/YhOCEgaWo0#MEMSPAchat@letsstartedup
A1: Is this a trick question? Daily Twitter posts, Green Screen videos, @breakoutEDU staff meeting, gamification, @PlayOsmo and OZObots with students at lunch. @bloxelsbuilder and attending the @MACUL conference every year with staff. #MEMSPAchat
A1. Try to share and show new things as I learn about them. Any T that wants to try it I support as best I can and encourage them even through the mistakes and learning. Classroom redesign, genius hour, now getting excited for touch cast. #MEMSPAchat
A1 - Leading a culture of innovation begins with vulnerability. You can't be afraid to show that you are human and make mistakes. Mistakes come when chances are taken - as a leader you need to show both. #MEMSPAchat
A1: Support a culture of innovation by
-trying new things all the time
-modeling failure and lookin' a fool
-creative environ where risk-taking is safe
-always asking selves how we can improve
#MEMSPAchat
A1: I let the staff know what risks I am taking. Whether it is with technology or just a new way to connect to our families and students. I give them chances to ask questions and then try things themselves. #MEMSPAchat
A1 My district was forward-thinking enough to create my position which is a hybrid of technology & curriculum = "how can we both instruct well" while thinking "how can we leverage tech to enhance teaching and learning". Also authentic partnerships beyond K12 #memspachat
Yes, the ability to try new things and preparing to fail. "Working in a safe place" as my friend said at the #spotlightoninnovation session last week. #memspachat
#memspachat A1: I "tease" staff with ideas, things I have seen or heard about, and ask if they know or have used these ideas. then we meet to share learning.
A1: You lead by example and collaboration. Foster a culture where innovation stems from collaboration and exploration. Create or pursue opportunities for this to happen in your school. #MEMSPAchat
Culture of Innovation is about taking a risk to step on the unknown path and freedom of getting lost. In most cases, a new way will be found. A1 #memspachat
A1 Model attempts at change for positive growth and recognize failure in the pursuit of improvement is welcomed and expected. MODEL MODEL MODEL with your own learning and admit fault while showing own growth. #memspachat
Great work on Question 1 everyone!
This is a great group we have on tonight's #MEMSPAchat
Remember to new participants, we're hear every Thursday at this time!
A1: Focusing on growth mindset for our students and staff. Building a culture of collaboration and shared leadership supports risk taking. Celebrating & sharing little steps toward the big vision. #MEMSPAchat
My preference is to never be device dependent. Great to have tools, but there is no substitute for strong teaching and personal connections. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Possibilities are endless when resources such as devices are available. Flipped and Blended classrooms become a reality. Con:Being prepared for tech failure. #MEMSPAchat
A1: Be willing to ask questions, listen, & put the learners first. Model what you would want as a student in regards to the overall educational experience. Engage in conversations that allow for two way communication #MEMSPAchat
A2: Pro: All students can be working independently allowing Ts to be able to meet 1:1 or small groups more readily to meet learner needs. Con: lessens opportunities for collaboration between Ss. #MEMSPAchat
A2: One type of device is not right for every student...personalized learning does not equal the same the same device. Some days I need an iPad...some days I need a chrome book! #MEMSPAchat
A2: Pro-Access to electronic resources & opportunities to expand learning/collaboration. Con-Safety, mgmt of devices, ineffective use of devices #memspachat
A2. 1 to 1 is great if your Ts are ready to use it to truly enhance the learning process rather than just doing the same thing you can do w/ paper pencil using tech. That’s an expensive writing utensil. #MEMSPAchat
A2: The biggest pro of having 1:1 devices: all students have the opportunity to access technology. The pro of not having 1:1 devices: we collaborate more and learn to share devices. #MEMSPAchat
We are not 1 to 1 buy have a Chrombebook cart for each grade level. The cons are not having one when you might really need/want it. So far we have been able to work with what we have. Looking to add more for next year. #MEMSPAchat
Agree neighbor! 1:1 should not be just a substitute for worksheets--have to use devices to support student in engaging in learning in a different way. #memspachat
A2 Cons...ummmm none?
Pros... Levels the playing field of access to information and accessability. Students with all level of ability and need can access what is necessary to learn and learn at their own pace. #memspachat
A2: s’s need ways to document and make their thinking visible. Devices can help but not sure need 1:1. Enough for small group collab=enough? #MEMSPAchat
A2: Pro's - good tools to differentiate - gives students options
Con's - devices should never replace good instruction - at times they can take up to much time in center activities -
Keeping staff up on trainings and solid uses of the devices is key. #memspachat
Great work responding everyone.
Remember to make those individual connections on the tweets you like! Making CONNECTIONS and Collaborating with each other is key! #MEMSPAchat
My preference is to never be device dependent. Great to have tools, but there is no substitute for strong teaching and personal connections. #MEMSPAchat
Great work on Question 1 everyone!
This is a great group we have on tonight's #MEMSPAchat
Remember to new participants, we're hear every Thursday at this time!
Devices are needed, but it is not about how many, it is abou twhat we do with them. Pro of 1 to 1: can be used for personalized learning, including home. Cons: too much time is taked by a device. A2 #memspachat
A2: 1 to 1 is an opportunity to use technology & shouldn’t be an expectation you do all the time. Not being 1 to 1 limits individual creation, but can foster collaborative group experiences #MEMSPAchat
A2: LOVE 1:1 for creating and processing learning in innovative ways! Concerned about substituting reading on device for actual books too much. Also, research on handwriting supporting processing of information over typing #MEMSPAchat
A2: Having: Con: too much screen time and not enough collaboration. Pro: allows for Ss to learn at their own pace and guide their learning. NOT? Con - you are denying your Ss opportunities to learn differently and in their native sphere of reality. Pros - 4 C's #MEMSPAchat
Right. Teachers need training so they can support tech integration. Sometimes we jump to putting devices in the hands of kids without training teachers first #MEMSPAchat
A2. 1 to 1 is great if your Ts are ready to use it to truly enhance the learning process rather than just doing the same thing you can do w/ paper pencil using tech. That’s an expensive writing utensil. #MEMSPAchat
A2: 1:1 must be more than just giving tech to students. Teachers and principal must have opportunities to learn about all of the options and how tech can enhance learning #memspachat
Q2: if all students have the same device, they lose tech flexibility. They need to be able to determine what type of device is best based on the learning task #MEMSPAchat
A2: if all students have the same device, they lose tech flexibility. They need to be able to determine what type of device is best based on the learning task #MEMSPAchat
A2: 1 to 1 requires financial commitment and vision. It provides opportunities where needed and levels the playing field. CON? Kids are too engaged?? Too prepared??? Um..... #memspachat
A2: Access and equity for ALL learners - huge PRO especially in a talented teacher's classroom where it's purposeful, focused, & meaningful part of student-centered learning. CON-Takes a skilled teacher to make it more than an electronic worksheet!
#MEMSPAchat#sjschools
A3: We talked about this today in one of our schools. Iteration is the name of the game. Incremental innovation is so much more important for learning than always tying to create something totally new. I learned that from @DougTimm34#MEMSPAchat#innovation#iteration
My thought is an Innovators Mindset eagerly looks to try new things. Innovators are looking to create, develop and design.
But frankly, both are positive mindsets. #MEMSPAchat
A3: Growth: I can't do it YET! Innovator: I'm going to create something new. Promote innovator: Ask Ss (& Ts) to create a solution to a real world problem. #MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat Innovation requires risk taking, stepping out of comfort zone....promote it, emphasize falling forward to learn from mistakes, model and promote continuous learning.
Yes! When we invest $$$ into something, we feel obligated to use it as much as possible. This much can become too much, which limits or eliminates other opportunities. #MEMSPAchat
A3: Growth mindset keeps your mind open to new learning and being willing to stretch yourself. An innovators mindset is how we look to improve what is out there. #memspachat
A3: A growth mindset is more accepting to change and a willingness to move forward and not becoming mediocre. Innovative means finding new ways to do what you are already doing. As @gcouros says, sometimes looking inside the box, not outside of the box. #MEMSPAchat
A3: haven't read Innovators Mindset YET but I think to inspire innovation in Ss you must facilitate the exploration of their ideas through multiple iterations and attempts to create and help them avoid negative language like failure. #MEMSPAchat
A3: A person with a continuous growth mindset strives to always improve. A person with an innovation mindset takes risks, reflects, learns from their success and failure. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Growth Mindset involves improving through proven methods while an Innovator's Mindset is growth through the use of fresh ideas that have yet to be established as common practice. #MEMSPAchat
I think you are correct. Innovation may not always be out with the old and in with the new, but it can build on strengths and successes and adapting them to new situations. #MEMSPAchat
Always open to utilizing @YouTube as a terrific tool to learn from and share with.
Always a big fan of podcasting!
Wonderful tools that promote growth and a variety of learning styles. #MEMSPAchat
A3: Growth mindset shows a willingness to view failure as a learning opportunity, innovators mindset is the creation from the opportunity. If you see something innovative... share it, tweet it, post it, praise it! #MEMSPAchat
A3: We talked about this today in one of our schools. Iteration is the name of the game. Incremental innovation is so much more important for learning than always tying to create something totally new. I learned that from @DougTimm34#MEMSPAchat#innovation#iteration
A3: Growth Mindset involves improving through proven methods while an Innovator's Mindset is growth through the use of fresh ideas that have yet to be established as common practice. #MEMSPAchat
Growth mindset finds a new door; innovator mindset finds a way to open it. Openmindedness vs. creativity; one compliments the other, leads to the other, and often impossible without the other. #memspachat
Q4: I'm looking for new ideas. Haven't tried FlipBook yet, was thiking that might be something to try. Excited to hear what others are trying/using. Don't know what I'm going to do when Storify ends. ekkk! #MEMSPAchat
A4: I am looking for other ways as well. I am going to start doing a weekly newsletter call to all our families starting after the new year. Old technology but it should effectively reach everyone. #MEMSPAchat
Going to start using Voxer and Touchcast that I learned at the Spotlight from #MEMSPA17 Also started a blog to share my thoughts and hopefully get some reflection from others. #MEMSPAchat
A4. My goal is to stretch myself and try touchcast and Facebook live for parent engagement. I’m reading @DrSConstantino’s book I bought last week to frame my thinking. #MEMSPAchat
A4: I am Touchcasting and publishing morning announcements on YouTube daily. The link is linked to Twitter which is linked to PTA Facebook. I just started using Smore. Get info out in various ways! Control your narrative!! #memspachat
A4: I am hoping to encourage my staff to use Google Hangouts more this year. So many possibilities to help students move beyond the walls of our building. #MEMSPAchat
A5 We created a student tech team that can be ordered up to help teachers/peers and they make helpful vids and handouts - Check out our awesome work here: https://t.co/DktF25JDlu#memspachat
A5: Listen, observe, question and then get out of their way! Our kids recently made their own game for breakout boxes - just amazing! They WANT to innovate, let's let them!! #MEMSPAchat#sjschools
So much on #MEMSPAchat is speaking to me tonight as the moderator, just trying to keep up, but...
When @schisik says ""Control your narrative!!" I get inspired to do more and lead!
A4: I am Touchcasting and publishing morning announcements on YouTube daily. The link is linked to Twitter which is linked to PTA Facebook. I just started using Smore. Get info out in various ways! Control your narrative!! #memspachat
A4: use what others use-we had a teacher use Facebook live with a deep thinking activity-students set the goal of 1000 views (it’s 1.3K and counting) #ShareYourLearning#MEMSPAchat
A5: For me success is giving Students access to technology & having THEM choose the format to demonstrate their knowledge. Have seen this with Genius Hour. Tech is a tool to unleash innovation. #MEMSPAchat
A5: Give them opportunities to explore the technology and then give them avenues to share with their peers, their family, and me! Have them teach what they learn. #memspachat
A5: When I introduced @stikbot and @bloxelsbuilder to my Ss, we would sit and learn together. Then they would go back to the classroom and share with their Ts and classmates. Empowering the students to lead. It has been energizing. #memspachat
Hey @codeorg Please RT to help these students! Over the past weeks a dozen 7th/8th graders have been meeting during homeroom and after school to try and get a Skype from Stephen Curry. The project was ran during Hour of Code Week and was completely student-driven!
A5: We are so lucky to have daredevil teacher @MrsJohnsonzps trying out new tools with students all the time! Ss teach me so much after she gives them wings with new tech tools. #MEMSPAchat#QuincyOn
A5: My building is Pre-K-3. 3rd was the first to have chrome books. Being the experts, they came to 2nd & 1st grade classrooms and helped their younger peers w/ chrome book orientation #MEMSPAchat
A5: Listen, observe, question and then get out of their way! Our kids recently made their own game for breakout boxes - just amazing! They WANT to innovate, let's let them!! #MEMSPAchat#sjschools
A5: For me success is giving Students access to technology & having THEM choose the format to demonstrate their knowledge. Have seen this with Genius Hour. Tech is a tool to unleash innovation. #MEMSPAchat
A5: Sit with Ss and have them teach me. They know so much and have little fear of failure with tech. I need to listen to them. I've engaged Ss using SeeSaw this year. It's been a great tool between them and me. #MEMSPAchat
Have an innovative idea you'd like to incubate with the pros #memspachat? @TeachtoLead Summit at #MIGETS2017 is going to be the palce to do it! Here is your chance to sign up to listen in and ask questions! https://t.co/kU3liCj8H2 …

A5: Use of video and audio to show improved reading fluency. Empowering and makes the growth visible for students. Clips can also be shared with parents.#MEMSPAchat
So many great ideas flying all over the place tonight on #MEMSPAchat - So awesome to see all the collaborations going on on the side as well! Fantastic job everyone!
A6. Not sure if we will ever go completely paperless. But social media, email, and classdojo really help. Some parents still like the paper on the fridge to look at. #MEMSPAchat
When communicating with families it can be best to offer a menu. Multiple sharing methods will increase the likelihood that your community is informed and you're leading with transparency. #MEMSPAchat
Only the best formative assessment tool out there, right @E_Sheninger? It is like Kahoot on steroids. Interactive, fun, quiz questions mixed with content and amazing things like group word clouds. https://t.co/5n1ouFoNi4#MEMSPAchat
In reply to
@MrEugenePark, @elemz5, @Mentimeter, @Flipgrid, @E_Sheninger
A5: SS are quick to inform when you've found a dud or a cumbersome app. SS feedback is critical in utilizing technology. SS voice --> empowered and engaged students. That is success.
#MEMSPAchat
A6 . It is difficult to get to all parents in the format they want. Text, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Phone, Email, phone push.... it starts to become a full-time job which is tough on admin schedule or in a small district! #memspachat
A6 - There aren't many - only switching our mindset. We need to get out of our own way. Dr. C last week - "my son had a Friday folder and he is 30" - Most everyone has tech - reach them where they are at! #MEMSPAchat
A6 - I just have to ask! From social media posts, to morning announcements, to how we can better utilize what we have, kids have amazing ideas when I take the time to listen #MEMSPAchat
A6: Need to consider where your school culture is at before going entirely paperless. Slow to go fast and always keep engagement at the forefront. #MEMSPAchat
A6) Paper can be reviewed, written on, saved and touched. Make sure email, video, Smore, and other tools are short, uncomplicated, memorable and easy to digest. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Meeting the needs of "generations" of parents & managing it all! Different tools get to different parents. We're almost paperless now, but we've got messenger, twitter, facebook, and a LMS #MEMSPAchat
Children love technology. They also love to feel important and needed. Parents love their kids. This will connect the dots, get parents pay attention, and potentially tap into professional and human capital of families. A5 #memspachat
A6: You need to find out where your "families" (@DrSConstantino) are at; FB, Twitter, insta. If there are not familiar with using twitter, you need to bring them in and show them how to use it. @Joe_Sanfelippo "How are you telling your school's story" #memspachat
A6: Caution must be taken not to have too many social media and other communication tools being used by school, teachers, kids... this leads to overload for many parents. #MEMSPAchat
A6: I am not sure we can ever be truly paperless. As building leaders we must remember to engage everyone on their own turf. Not everyone is plugged in. #memspachat
Q7: With how fast innovation changes, and you being 1 person, how do you ensure that you sustain an Innovation Culture at your school with lead staff & non-lead staff? #MEMSPAchat
A6: When considering flipping parent communication to be entirely paperless it is important to remember that it would be mean ending the communication with our parents who do not have internet access. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Goal is to "invite" families into school as often as possible. If they have the info, they can support Ss learning. We need to tell our own story. We still use some paper, but as little as possible. #MEMSPAchat
Check out how to get support developing your innovative idea for strategic partnerships with your schools here --> https://t.co/mtavKisEMg I'm lucky enough to part of the planning and support team!!! #memspachat#miched
A6. I think of remind. At first it was great, now I have a remind for EVERYTHING. It becomes white noise after a while. Need to make sure we don't become the white noise to parents by bombarding them with info. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Everyone needs to have access to internet and that is not always the case. It is also then up to them to sign up for the paperless communication. Providing options for families is important. #MEMSPAchat
Q7: With how fast innovation changes, and you being 1 person, how do you ensure that you sustain an Innovation Culture at your school with lead staff & non-lead staff? #MEMSPAchat
A6: First view the experience from the Ps perspective, survey them often, & be efficient w/o missing the necessities. We went to online conference signup for Ps & made how to video for it. Google Classroom for staff we did the same. “Show me, don’t just tell me” #MEMSPAchat
A7: I like to "plant seeds". As I learn about new tools, thinking, etc... I'll drop a seed w/ a staff member (lead or not) let it germinate and circle back to see where we can take it. Some take root, others not, but at least we're trying. #MEMSPAchat
Q7: With how fast innovation changes, and you being 1 person, how do you ensure that you sustain an Innovation Culture at your school with lead staff & non-lead staff? #MEMSPAchat
A7: Innovation is about the culture not the leader. The leader creates the environment for culture to thrive! If innovation stops when the leader leaves, the culture wasn't there. #MEMSPAchat

Q7: With how fast innovation changes, and you being 1 person, how do you ensure that you sustain an Innovation Culture at your school with lead staff & non-lead staff? #MEMSPAchat
A7: Cultural changes come from within the hearts and souls of each individual. NOT from mandates or checklists.
Build relationships+
focus on strengths+
get creative together+
model innovation
=moving mountains
#memspachat
I think this is wise. One approach fits all never works. We need to have options. I' d say, save paper for the most important things and go digital for the rest. #MEMSPAchat
A7: Send different staff to @MACUL each year. Keep offering opportunities to collaborate on innovation in the classroom. Share successes outside of the building. #memspachat
Q7: With how fast innovation changes, and you being 1 person, how do you ensure that you sustain an Innovation Culture at your school with lead staff & non-lead staff? #MEMSPAchat

Q7: With how fast innovation changes, and you being 1 person, how do you ensure that you sustain an Innovation Culture at your school with lead staff & non-lead staff? #MEMSPAchat
A7: Every year, I take at least three teachers with me to the @MACUL Conference. Then, when we get back, they have the next staff meeting to share what they learned and become the "Coach" of that new tool/resource for Ts that want to learn more. #memspachat
Q7: With how fast innovation changes, and you being 1 person, how do you ensure that you sustain an Innovation Culture at your school with lead staff & non-lead staff? #MEMSPAchat
My mantra "Leave 'em better than you found 'em" If they are better for you being around... you weren't a leader...you just took up an office and paycheck :) #MEMSPAchat
Last question of the night on #MEMSPAchat will post in about 45 seconds!
Thanks to everyone tonight! Hopefully you can feel the Collaboration of Leading and Learning!
A7. This is where the title Lead Learner comes into play. Focus on your priorities and go for it. What you focus on is what you get #Baby steps #MEMSPAchat
Q8: Name ONE THING that you’d like to do to in 2018 to engage each other to work towards a more Innovative community of educational leaders and schools? #MEMSPAchat
A7: I am proud to work in a place where teacher leaders step forward to lead our innovative efforts on a regular basis. My job is to provide the time and space to support them. #MEMSPAchat
A8: I’d love to start and “innovation team” of educators who work at different levels across Michigan to meet up,grab some dinner, and bring innovative ideas to the team that they’ve tried or are working towards #MEMSPAchat
A8: I’d love to start and “innovation team” of educators who work at different levels across Michigan to meet up,grab some dinner, and bring innovative ideas to the team that they’ve tried or are working towards #MEMSPAchat
A8. More face to face collaboration. Social media is great, but the in person conversations are so much better and deeper. need to find/make time for more of that! #MEMSPAchat
A8 - Broken record sorry... I was tired of whining that business & legislature wasn't paying attention to innovation in Ed... so I helped to create this event in 2018 to showcase & incubate great educational ideas across MI!!! Apply by 28th! https://t.co/mtavKisEMg#memspachat

A8: I plan on staff leading all (or most) of our staff meetings as mini PD sessions beginning in January. Tap into the incredible resources in our building! #MEMSPAchat
A8: This is a big ? for me right now. We are working to expand Innovative thinking, doing throughout our district... it needs to be organic, not directed. #MEMSPAchat
Q8: Name ONE THING that you’d like to do to in 2018 to engage each other to work towards a more Innovative community of educational leaders and schools? #MEMSPAchat
Important for leaders to choose one or two things and aim to continuously improve.
Collins says, If you are doing more than 3 things, you aren't doing any at all. #GoodToGreat#MEMSPAchat
Further celebrate risks taken by Ts and leaders to be innovative in the classroom. Success will come if Ts feel safe to take the risk initially. #MEMSPAchat
Q8: Name ONE THING that you’d like to do to in 2018 to engage each other to work towards a more Innovative community of educational leaders and schools? #MEMSPAchat
A8: Create another avenue through tech for Principals to connect, lead and learn together!
...And find another archive site due to @Storify going away, boo! #MEMSPAchat
A8: Get everyone that is involved in #memspachat to sign up (for free) and join the SIG Admin group through @MACUL. We have much to offer and are looking to grow and get involved. #memspachat@sigad_macul Be sure to check out our page on the MACUL webpage https://t.co/qamMLBdprn
Q8: Name ONE THING that you’d like to do to in 2018 to engage each other to work towards a more Innovative community of educational leaders and schools? #MEMSPAchat
A8: we going to try reaching out to the local business community asking them for problems they’re trying to solve or “products” they’re trying to create to see if we can have our student teams engage in the design thinking process with/for/instead of them #MEMSPAchat
I would like to have every teacher attend at least one PD hour outside of the district. We are often stewing in the same pot for so long that it becomes impossible to find energy for anything but the old. A8 #memspachat
Hey #MEMSPAchat thanks for the great chat tonight. You are invited to join @WeberEducation and myself Tuesday, at #divergeED as we look at the "student view" of the PLC
Something new!!!
This is the first time I have done a pre-chat conversation, sharing the topic of the December 19th #divergED chat. Moderator @WeberEducation led our discussion. You can access our convo on Youtube at https://t.co/Ga1ihVYcG4
A8: Innovation is NOT limited to technology. #QuincyOn T's innovate in so many ways--kinders "run and write"; first graders doing "superman pose" before assessments; practicing mindfulness; spiderweb discussions, etc. #memspachat
