A1: the students at the heart of my work are the students who don’t realize there’s a bigger world out there. There’s more to learning than what we sometimes show them. #atchat
A1 My <3 is with students with complex needs and LD students. I work with infants to adults changes daily. I love the diversity of my groups and the things they teach me. #ATCHAT
#atchat Students are at the heart of our work. We support anyone and everyone who supports students; parents, teachers, administrators but Students First!
A1. 18 years of Ss are at the heart of my work. It is their feedback and relationships that have made me a better teacher. To all my future Ss u have those that came before u to thank. #ATchat
First time tweeter here. I teach because I want to be there for the kids who hate school. I want to give them a reason to come back every day. Not for me; but for themselves. #atchat
A:1 I support all students that walk in the library or makerspace. I have so many cool things in the makerspace that kids want to be there then I get to introduce them to books about their maker passion! I love my job. #ATchat

Q2: Interdepartmental collaboration to provide the trifecta: an LMS that works, anchored by a literacy goal and supported by the @texthelp suite of tools. It’s just great for everyone. #atchat#ocsb
A1 I grew up in the 50’s. I work for the students who cannot yet speak up for themselves. In the 50’s they were institutionalized. Now we presume competence. #ATChat#Presumecompetence
A2. Ss are in lit circles of books with choice and work on #hyperdocs at own pace with reading program and get to independently read. They have models and options that allow them to explore. @Flipgrid great tool for this #ATchat
My name is Javier Acevedo and I'm a student at UGA! I am currently doing a project for my class so I wanted to learn! I can't wait to learn something new tonight! #ATchat#edit2000mane
A2: Literacy is the interaction w/ ideas. I encourage Ts to help Ss explore texts that speak to them - books & novels, yes, but audiobooks, music, paintings, charts, maps, & people's feelings too. When we can "read" the world around us, so much more becomes accessible. #atchat
A1: I work every day to support ALL learners. Students, teachers, parents, everyone! Find ways to connect w/every learner and facilitate success #ATchat
A2. Districts shifting to 1:1 technology have allowed for more discussion around universal supports and identifying that tools don't work as single supports. Tools allow for flexibility. I'm continuing to work on this with students & staff I support. #ATchat
Q2: Depending on the environment. We have teachers making books that are considerate text. Electronic text material created by HS students for the elementary students. Teaching teachers to create SWAGS. #ATChat

To create an accessible and inclusive literacy environment, I am currently trying to make all of our e-books available via one sign-on. Some kids would rather read online. #ATChat
A2B: Many. Embedded tools. text to speech, word prediction, speech to text, access to grade level books presented in a manner ALL students can access. #ATChat
A2b Spending as much time in classrooms as possible. Learning about what teachers know and are using. Then collaborating and sharing. This group is a great resource #ATchat

Here's how my friend and #PLN member @rlfreedm answers Q3: What matters most as you work to create an accessible and inclusive literacy environment? #ATChat
Not in a #UDL setting.... or is it?? It’s our collective responsibility. If it was done as a forethought, not an afterthought, maybe it would shift? Optimist, I am. #ATChat

A3: What matters most is student voice. What do they want to read? How do they want to read it? We don't need to program kids as robots. We have robots for that.
Our job is to inspire, to motivate, and to cultivate. #atchat
A3: literacy is the craft of story — writing it, reading it, understanding & analyzing it. Allowing each S to do this with tools that are comfortable & can match their purpose #atchat
Third grade teacher joining from TX.
A2: with output, making sure that Ss aren’t feeling frustrated with writing, rather they are getting to use voice-to-text or audio recordings to record their thinking and showing their work. I also use Newela often for nonfiction #ATchat
A3: Tools to empower STUDENTS to make ANYTHING they WANT/NEED to READ accessible. Let's face it-we've been working on Accessible educational materials for a long time and daily I see inaccessible materials. Empower Students! #atchat
A3: With staff, it’s important that everyone have a shared goal for literacy; and that the tools be used to support that goal. Also, strengths based assessment for students with accommodations - don’t use an area of weakness when assessing literacy skills #atchat
Q1: I work with age 3-21 years. My fav. age to work with is Pre-k. I support all groups currently. I ❤️problem solving, creativity, and tech & working with kids with complex needs. MATN/JHU and so many others have influenced my thinking! #atchat
Glass-half-full guy here too! We need to continue to educate all edus AND Ss about accessibility and inclusive design. Educated Ss=self advocates! #ATchat
A3 Providing multisensory opportunities is imperative. Our team created a literacy planner that we later upgraded to a STEAM planner, then threw in core, AT and PE concepts to go along with the scaffolded theme. #ATchat

And kudos to Laura. She is driving despite challenges of "not enough technology" etc. We got to present to principals today! Best comment from a principal was...I saw a change in students' confidence. Isn't that what it is all about! #ATChat
@kendraedmonds42 uses whatever I can! Glean from EVERYWHERE. Still struggling with how to use chromebook with worksheets though. Has been biggest challene. Still use a great deal of old school (these days anything 5 min. out is old) ipad apps w/ all.#atchat
A3: Making the library a welcoming place, a comfortable place to draw students in during their academic (what we used to call study-hall). Getting kids to come in & then wowing them with all the cool stuff like @breakoutEDU, @Flipgrid & so much more! #ATChat

I think there is still something to be said with printed copies of some material. Maybe not a requirement but an option. I find Ss that I’ve worked with k-12 fluidly showing their thinking on paper is powerful #ATChat
Yes, students always have the option to print out the material if they would like. Much easier for Ss to print materials than for Ss to create their own accessible materias. #ATchat

Yes, amazing comment from one of my favorite school leaders. Thank you for sharing and presenting! Excited to continue the movement one school at a time. #atchat
A4: My accessibility dream? That "accessible texts" become options for all students, as what is essential for some is good for all. P.S. An audiobook is still reading. #UDL#atchat
A4: No more worksheets. Teachers are empowered to create. Students are empowered to learn in a way that’s flexible, engaging, and representative of what they know. #atchat
Sad that not all feel this way! It is so important because the Library is access and is literacy for so many of our students that can’t get to their public library. #ATChat

My biggest dream for a literacy rich environment is to have EVERYONE working to make opportunities happen. We need consistent and continual access and opportunity for all students. A few focused opportunities a week are not enough. #ATchat

A4 Yeah, and fun too. Learning inside, outside, seating alternatives, music, cooking, realia-making literacy come alive by living the experience. We used to be able to teach that way. Remember whole language? #ATchat
Through the ages we have been storytellers. Give our kids the tools to tell and pass down their stories. An insight to their souls. @BookCreatorApp#ATChat
100% agree. We are quick to jump into the paperless environment to say that we are “innovative” or “progressive”. Thank all of you for giving Ss choice & adapting to need. Not press releases. #ATChat

You are talking to a pen and paper dyslexic that loves her paper calendar, notebook for notes yet loves technology for many other things. 100% one way isn't always the answer. Meet the person at their comfort level. #Atchat
I gotta say some kids like worksheets. There is something pleasing about cutting, coloring, pasting, of filling in the blanks. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Give options and alternatives #ATchat
When it comes to accessible materials, I often take it on my own so the teacher isn't overwhelmed. Then give templates they can fill in. Then I encourage alternative methods. Slow and steady #atchat

Same here. Gradual release in some cases when teachers are ready or want to learn. Learning to meet people where they are and honoring that to help them move forward. I’m still learning myself. #ATChat
Yes. I have access to bookshare, but it’s hard to manage with so many students. We need students to have access instead of AT coordinator access only. Need to learn how to change the accounts over/give more people access. #atchat

A5: I love any opportunity to learn. I am most grateful to people who work with students daily, my children & family, my work colleagues and researchers #atchat
Absolutely. I hope our future is one where students move from year to year and eventually leave high school with language to describe their “best scenario workflow”. #atchat

A6: Best. Question. Ever. I'd go John Dewey all the way, "One might as well say he has sold when no one has bought, as to say that he has taught when no one has learned." If students don't love literacy, that's on us. Bicep, baby. Go big or go home. #atchat

I think my final though about all this would be that I hope the world becomes more inclusive and learns more about this. In order to do this people around the world need more resources. This way more of the world will know about literacy and reading tools. #ATChat#edit2000mane
1) Make sure how the student wants access. Audio only, Text and audio. Highlighting and Audio. Nothing is one size fits all.
2) Make sure you are comfortable with the accessible methods then intro to your students.
#ATChat
A2: We started with an LMS with BYOD. Seemed frustrating at first. Now that is driving tech. I've seen a huge leap forward in getting accessible materials. However, we need consistent tools and best if SPED kids use what peers use but with needed supports. Getting there. #ATChat
Thx so much to @audreyoclair & @nancykawaja for leading a great discussion tonight. Looking forward to seeing everyone next week for our monthly Open Forum. Bye for now! #ATchat
