Q) What can online students do to avoid plagiarizing?

Are there any tools you recommend? Tips for writing assignments and citations?

Most schools offer some kind of plagiarism checking tools, like TurnItIn or Safe Assign. We use SafeAssign within Blackboard

Are these tools that students can use before they submit? to check their own work? I've used Turnitin on the faculty side.

I just had 2 cases of plagiarism this last week; seems the defense is always, "I didn't realize cut and paste was plagiarizing!"

Yes, both SafeAssign and TurnItIn can be used prior to a final submission for students to check their own work.
