Hi there! Running late. Trying to balance twitter chats and ALDS baseball tonight.
Hi Again! We are chatting twice today :)
Hi Mark! Welcome to the chat! Curious to know how Canada looks at and defines 21CC.
A1 at Kent State we don't really have a definition, but with online components a part of most courses we expect competency
A1: Empathy + cultural awareness. We want to provide tools for kids to become compassionate global citizens
Hi everyone. Joe, math & STEAM coach from Palo Alto, CA, checking in late.
A1 Hiroshima Innovative Action Plan: "lifelong learning ability"; "ability to use knowledge and collaborate" are important
I like the intra-personal skills listed!
Thanks for joining - I know we have some stiff competition tonight ;)
Tech competency or what specific ones are you looking to develop from that learning space?
Hey everyone, checking in for a bit. Renee White, 1st grade from NC.
Joe! Great to have you on again!
love those resources too! I have been digging into them a lot lately.
A1:my best interpretation of our district expectation is having kids know how to use tech to communicate and create product.
Hey Renee! Glad you could join us - even if for a bit!
Hi Renee. Glad to see you here. Are you prepping for the possible storm?
Ken from Western Oregon University in College of Educ. Just arriving
Q2 What 21CC are most important to key stakeholders in your community? (e.g. employers, school board)
VIFed global consultant, Cal, checking in on your global chat tonight from NC
we expect a readiness to engage online and we have courses dealing with what it means to be a 21st century learner
Hey Ken! Always good to see you. I'm glad we have moved on to the rainy, fall weather...
no thank goodness! We are in the triangle so just looking like rain.
Curious to know how you view 21CC in Egypt?
A2 Denver Plan 2020: "support for whole child" is one of 5 strategic goals for district
A1: Great question, as 21st CC (cognitive & "non-cognitive") are defined in such a variety of ways!
A1: I work to strike balance btwn using tech for dig lit and blended learning.
A1: closest is what's in our COE conceptual framework. Ed equity, intellectual vitality, professionalism, cultural sensitivity
A2: Is football a 21C skill? (Forgive the quip, in the heart of homecoming week in rural North America)
. love seeing global citizenship on this list!
yes! I'm ready for snow and skiing!
So what are some of the readiness indicators of being a 21st century learner?
A2: Creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, & communication.
A2 Cross-sector community planning for 21CC can include higher ed, workforce, mental health, parents, and others
A2: I'd love to know if our district has even inquired.
Gene from OSU college of education checking in
Ha! Sure! Let's call it "sportsmanship."
A2: I just interviewed pple about skills needed for jobs: problem solving, creativity, communications, integrity came up a lot
Communication & Collaboration, need students to be problem solvers and work well with others. hard to measure on a test
A2 Empathy and positivity. Certainly needed in the classroom.
Thats great that cultural sensitivity is included
Yes - integrity! Love seeing that one on there.
Creativity, curiosity and collaboration.....
A2: I'd also add in empathy, , & intrinsic motivation.
knowing where to find and how to evaluate info and responsibility in co-creating info
A2 equity is becoming more & more so, but also cultural sensitivity
A2 Tolerant of other cultures, recognizing similarities and differences
A2: Our stakeholders = parents & educators: value academic skills, esp. STEAM & literacy. Also EQ and cultural awareness.
I love this one too. But I wonder how you track and observe that? Not easy...
Def many "teachable moments" about what it feels like when people reduce themselves to a single source of identity
Yes - involving all stakeholders, esp. parents, is really essential.
A great idea, I think about having a positive mindset about change and how our perspectives can impact change.
Yes! But, I would've expanded on skills they chose to bring in more of a humanizing element & critical literacy
A2. GC not defined here. I look to people like you all for guidance, and to empathy/global citizenship as the core values.
Not easy - they talked about hiring for personality first, hard skills second.
My view is all should have the opportunity to develop and learn from all one another in a safe environment
Hi! I am Patty from Kent State.
A2: The 4 C's (communication, collaboration, critical thinking & creativity) + global citizenship are particularly important
Whew! Glad to hear it. I think it'll skip NYC too. I hope.
A2: I would think is on the list too.
A2: I've heard from private sector people that they're concerned about people "hiding" behind tech. Interpersonal skills lack.
Q3 What teaching strategies and resources do you use with youth to develop their 21CC?
Thanks for joining tonight!
I suppose the "unseen" characteristics are harder to recognize and track at first.
A3 In Seoul, MS students explore careers, self-directed learning, and cooperative projects during an Exam-Free Semester
Me too! especially as that came out of study of about 10 countries' ideas and definitions
Biggest hurdle is getting students access to tech that can actually connect them to global community AND sustain involvement
A2: Very excited to see all the comments about global citizenship! :)
A3 tching mult perspective, media literacy, inquiry. Simulations great, cross-cultural video-conferencing to humanize "other"
A3 Hiroshima is developing innovative student-centered school models, including applying learning to global problems
A3 providing international teachers to help develop students to become global thinkers and expose them to the world
collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking
A2. Think we need to define "community" for this Q. Our kids' community should be the world, & action should be our aim.
Non-cog is a funny label :-)... perhaps why some prefer 'social & emotional skills' (though a bit narrower) !
Yes, the community is bigger than their own backyard
A3 teachable moments! educators as active role models in our digital world. https://t.co/st9TMECsql
Q3 What teaching strategies and resources do you use with youth to develop their 21CC?
A3: but it's about teaching content, tech,&life all at once. w how to use tech&content combined is sweet spot
A3: Big Q! Intercultural communication via blog, intellectual discomfort, world lit and music, meme-making, digital projects
A3 providing lots of opportunities for students to discuss ideas & perspectives, socratic seminar
A3 I teach Spanish and we adhere to the 5 C's of language instruction which leans on connections, communities in communication
Yes! I always share my cultural and digital faux pas!
Yes! Empowering students to take action in their local community and their global community.
A3: Books! Diverse books → cultural and emotional literacy.
The 5 C's are such a fantastic framework for language instruction!
A3:blogging, researching questions, evaluating sources, creating product focused on dig literacy and dig citizenship.
We use Twitter to connect, GHO, sites like Skype. Blogging.
A3. I have my students live tweet through a doc or event. sessions to Uganda. Phone fueled research. GROUP WORK.
Q4 How might school-community partnerships support the development of 21CC?
A3: & are great ways to incorporate 21stC skills too.
Yes, and some are the reports on the various systems' approaches that & I brought up here tonight.
A3: also teaching coding as a language and incorporating as much STEM as possible.
A4 Aligning PD of formal and nonformal educators can leverage resources, increase capacity
A2: School board wants students to learn from 21st century skills.
A4 could provide Ss authentic-learning opps to use 21CC & experience its importance if partnerships include service
Love it! Global engagement and collaboration together.
A3 Global projects require research and help families make connections and take ownership
How about Zoom as a platform for dialogue and group engagement?
A4 Seattle Public Schools is developing a framework to enhance matches and create a shared approach for schools, partners
A4 School’s can support the partnership by giving skills and developing empathy.
A3: Leveraging tech to enhance opportunities for Ss to utilize 21stcskills- gsuite | social media | tools of professionals
A3 Global projects create opportunities for students & families to experience "how to" have conversations about what matters.
and promote understanding and empathy!
A4: By bringing in guest teachers, GHOs, club, night, etc.
student/families taught to recognize others are not weird, just different
How do they define "21st cent skills"? What have they decided are the important comp of focus?
programs with NGOs like , - great way to form int'l partners!
A4 schools can tap into the cultures of the local community, invite people in to share
Yes. We also use stations with GHO on mini pads. https://t.co/7kRy8qLKIi
How about Zoom as a platform for dialogue and group engagement?
Do you think coding should be an allowable "language" or require course for all Ss?
A4 Open learning - twitter tips & shares for parents, blogging to share, involve families openly https://t.co/71x4nTX4Nk
Q4 How might school-community partnerships support the development of 21CC?
A4: getting Ss out of the classroom and into the community makes the learning "real." What problems can we solve together?
A4B community partners may also help schools access resources (i.e. technologies) that help w/ facilitating 21CC development
A4 lots of great ideas here for engaging families as partners too
A4: The community can help connect Ss with experts, helping them brainstorm and at the same time igniting their passions
A4: here's one way to bring week to your school @levelhttp://www.levelupvillage.com/steam-week-pjs/
A3: My most important resources come from events of the day. Seeing the issues of the world in real time engages & inspires.
. very cool! what's an example of a global project?
We love having a parent perspective on !
When we model "how to" connect globally through authentic projects, Ss & families experience value & how..
A4: It is a great way for small rural communities to showcase the talent of both students and adults , working together.
Haiti earthquake, integrated curriculum, helping students to think about solutions, offer assistance
A3: Cooperative learning, assign a variety of projects and let them choose.
Q5 What barriers exist to developing youth’s 21CC in your school or program?
A3: Connecting classroom lessons to the "real world" can provide meaningful opportunities to develop 21st cc
A5 Hard to gain traction without resources, staff person dedicated to 21CC
A5 Empowering your teachers and developing trust that they can integrate with the required standards
A5: time! The problem with everything.
A5 Need to find a champion to help make 21CC visible, advocate for resources
A5 Culture shift starts with the leadership in the school
A5: Thankfully my company is totally committed to creating diverse books to develop 21CC.
A5: Not limiting it to one area of school/ content area. Not taught in pockets but a complete part of a school's vision.
A5: Training and resources!
A5: Lack of Technology for some Ts, media/internet releases for Ss, getting other Ts on board.
A5 barriers - many school districts lack needed resources& time due to focus on high-stakes tests (which doesn't help w/ 21CC)
A5 If 21CC is seen as a separate program rather than an integrated part of system, impact will be limited
Yes! Start w/local CBOs, people, institutions. Doesn't always have to be international to be considered "global"
A5 Drill and kill can provide proficiency but not global citizenship
so true, you have to live it.
Late to the party , but have a few minutes to cycle through and join in!
Agree, giving Ts/parents skills to use media to develop Chn’s understanding is key.
Agree, giving Ts/parents skills to use media to develop Chn’s understanding is key.
. Totally! Integrated, project-based learning --> 21CC
What is required for educators to be empowered?
A5 I think about teaching as an art & how creative I must be in weaving in/out authentic ideas with explicit examples of what
Thinking about A1 10 yrs I've come to focus on questioning, negotiating, & co-creating . I think every… https://t.co/i9wn0Qawli
Q1 There is no one definition around the world for 21st century competencies (21CC). How does your school/program define it?
yes. Ss who get some of those dimensions will do better but tests as currently run in many states aren't doing it
Feeling of trust from their leader that they support trying new things
Absolutely! Bring the community in to see the great things Ss are doing!
Ts need time to learn new skills. This will empower them.
A2 is co-creation. That's what adds value in our local economy https://t.co/MC4LZCDSU5
Q2 What 21CC are most important to key stakeholders in your community? (e.g. employers, school board)
A4: Local businesses provide experiences with their equipment; such as 3D printers.
A5. The biggest barrier to global learning is the prioritization of testing over the well lit citizenship plaque in the lobby.
Q6 What supports/training are needed to build capacity of formal and nonformal educators to develop these competencies?
possibly business partners who see the value in Ss developing these skills. Identifying is hard part.
A5 Students want to learn, if we can make it as engaging as it can be, student achievement will always improve
Whose mindset? Ts? Admin? Ss? Yours? Why is dev 21CC so hard to get behind?
A6 Role of educator needs to shift from "deliverer" to "facilitator"; requires support and new training
Q6 Ts need to feel safe taking risks and trying new things, culture of sharing among staff
A5. I think we're at a moment when people are finally seeing that ignorance of the world is a threat to democracy itself.
A5) A 20th-century system. A 20th-century mindset across education stakeholders. https://t.co/G6AA2q4b80
Q5 What barriers exist to developing youth’s 21CC in your school or program?
A6 Need buy-in from admin, leaders and opps for educators to develop their own 21CC. PD, coaching, and PLCs help with this.
A6 In Singapore, 21CCs are integrated into syllabi, teaching and learning guides to help teachers
So true! https://t.co/ZYJe6zzkyC
A5 Students want to learn, if we can make it as engaging as it can be, student achievement will always improve
A6 PD that includes exposure to 21CC & include resources educators can take away & use & provides collaborating opportunities
A6: PD & practice on how to "coach" Ss to be 21C learners & teachers. Some control needs to be given over.
A6 Creating the facilitator takes time, teachers shouldn't feel like they are judged or evaluated every classroom visit
A6: Support from media essential for investment. With 's 1st PISA test for global competency in 2018, I see opportunity.
agree, it should be about growth and prof. conversation
The focus is on future job skills. Students need to learn to collaborate and communicate in jobs.
Except that the people who are seeing this aren't the ignorant ones. https://t.co/2h0ek09TS2
A5. I think we're at a moment when people are finally seeing that ignorance of the world is a threat to democracy itself.
Q7 Should youth’s 21CC be measured or assessed? How or why not?
A6 I wonder if we need to ensure that Ts & Ss work on dev 21CC consurrently. It's new for Ts too & not just the teaching side!
A6. Newspapers have vested interest in work. We are developing lifelong subscribers. Could we partner with them for training?
A7 Big question: is measurement formative for decision-making, improvement or summative (with implications for accountability?
Q7 Measured, assessments stifle the creativity for individual teacher lessons and student mastery
A5: Cooperation from local businesses.
A7: I think it should be noted but not graded. How do you assess creativity? ? Empathy? ?
A7 Assessment requires alignment between supports provided, what is measured. "Lead with support before accountability" (DPS)
A7: Just created an employability skills rubric to help educators talk about these sills with students https://t.co/EUq1sbnIB6
A7) Which 21st-century skills might be assessed? We seem to already know the answer. https://t.co/lQyaYjhZco
Americans say keys to success are knowledge of computers, social dexterity, communications skills, access to trainin… https://t.co/74eAjAIrNe
I agree trust is a big issue sometimes.
A7: MHA labs has some great resources to help you talk with students about 21st Century competencies: https://t.co/YoWNPIAJG0
A7 Not if it turns into another HST situation. Then it'll be watered down & Ss/parents will distrust it like current testing
A7 In Singapore, 21CC assessment is formative: provide feedback to students as they develop new skills, values, dispositions
A7: I feel that all learning should be measured/ assessed to provide data for further development of instruction
A6: Teachers need to be trained in how to use many new technological advances.
A7 If it’s taught it should be recorded.Maybe a skills ladder approach but most 21CC skills are subjective/personal
A7 Not great on this resource thing yet but VIF has created global indicators that are measures, not assessments.
Thanks for a great chat. Have to head out a bit early.
A7: Yes we need to assess. Huge fan of observational assessment and portfolios. Testing not so much. Data needs context.
A7: In elementary an assessment could simply be teacher observation.
A7B Would be better measurement tool if it's something teachers can provide feedback on rather than being standardized
Thanks for a great chat, hope to see you next week.
A5:Some barriers stem from lack of clearly defined objectives for learning 21st cc. Being explicit makes it more intentional
Have to run & help w/ dinner. Thanks for another great !
Everyone, please help me thank and for organizing a fantastic tonight!!
, product-based learning = good assessment tools for 21C Innovation skills. Ts can get as creative as Ss.
We’re at time! Thank you for joining tonight and to for co-hosting!
