Please join us for a weekly conversation about design thinking in K12 education. We will have a variety of moderators with a wide range and depth of design thinking experiences. Each week, we will connect the dots to the design thinking methodology and how it can and will play a bigger role in today’s K12 educational arena.
For example, first faculty member we talked with in the #sicmbc today? We rocked out the #innovatorscompass via @ElaBenUr to get to core of the problem & human needs there #dtk12chat
A1:Design Thinking helps makes connections to the real world. It allows students to se and grasp the “Why?” of what they are learning. I need to learn about x to solve this authentic problem. #dtk12chat
If we are truly invested in the DT mindset, empathy will be the driver for everything we do in the classroom. How awesome would a classroom culture be if we were always putting others first? #dtk12chat
Just arrived! Just got home and am eating supper, so I'll try to chime in as much as I can! (It's those nutty few days with teachers before kids arrive for their first day. You know how it is). #dtk12chat

I don't know...? "I think there's something about learning being an act we do for the self...Afterall, there's a dopamine hit when we learn something new. #dtk12chat
A1: so in an effort to build ethnography muscles, we had US Ss observe LS Ss on the playground. if we look at how ppl interact and create then we can prototype cultural norms for our work/playspace #dtk12chat
We used Design Thinking on day one last year! Took every single piece of furniture out of our room and had learners design the environment for their partner. It was awesome! @MisterCMaine#dtk12chat
2/2 #dtk12chat & kids want purposeful learning; Prof. Bill Damon defines it as, "a stable and generalized intention to accomplish something that is at the same time meaningful to the self and consequential for the world beyond the self.” There's no prioritizing of others there.
I would assume that learning to serve others provides a dopamine hit as well. It’s definitely something new for most students and adults for that matter. #dtk12chat
Vary up activities; Solo, partner, small group... silent, quiet, loud... standing, not standing. Right to pass. Build on improv tenant of making each other looking brilliant and wonderful. #dtk12chat

Q2: Teachers are often asked to create classroom cultures w/personalization, agency, etc but they don't experience it themselves. How can DT help facilitate shifts in school culture so teachers have as many awesome experiences as students? #dtk12chat
A1: Got to spend last few weeks coaching Ts in several empathy building practices that they may use to start the year. Human affinity mapping, investigating students' wishes and worries, and immersion/interviews for need finding. #dtk12chat
The biggest part of our back to school work has been in building a culture of collaboration and agency. #dtk12chat These pieces help to develop the need to understand perspective of others and to help with communication
A2. This is so important. I'm lucky to be able to be on the team that plans PD at my school and we're always careful to make sure our PD mirrors the kind of learning we want our Ss to be doing. #dtk12chat
The most powerful learning I have ever seen has come from DT projects where the end goal is someone else. There is a sense of accomplishment (self) for what Ss have created along with the empowering feeling that they helped others beyond themselves. (world)#dtk12chat
Right back at you! But seriously! How ridiculous is it to have a workshop with a PowerPoint where someone talks at you for an hour about collaborative learning? Or creativity? Or rich task design? We need to practice this to know it. #dtk12chat
Yup...totally agree. I was just thinking that we can't put others first in all instances of learning. My own DT practice is similarly founded as yours. #dtk12chat It is purposeful, as noted in the definition.
A1: I was in the office today and our secretaries are harried and frustrated ( too many interruptions and can’t get their normal daily tasks done). I told them to expect my 5th graders to come interview them soon so we can DT up in this mug. #dtk12chat
A2: this is so important. Many Ts do not have agency 4 a variety of reasons. Ts need to be supported in building their own agency, creative confidence, getting comfortable with the uncomfortable. need 2 b supported & need 2 be willing to try. #dtk12chat
A2. But guys. This is ESPECIALLY important with #designthinking. If teachers don't experience it themselves, it's impossible to know how to support Ss in the uncomfortable, sticky, difficult process when they engage in it. #dtk12chat
You know what? It's rather selfish, actually. When I use DT, I am far more effective. And when I don't, the entire vibe is off. The work and my learning is shallow. Dissatisfying. Do you find this?#dtk12chat

As a coach I'm really trying to empathize with teachers to begin to look at how I can develop new understanding without overwhelming. Really appreciated @sadieclorinda piece of design thinking and coaching #dtk12chat

I completely agree with this! Even academically, having empathy for where are Ss are in their learning (in all subjects) models this. Truly meeting them where they are rather than pushing through content. #dtk12chat
We have to get out of our comfort zone to get better, to learn more, to be creative. When some Ts are in that position, they have a tendency to push back. When we include #dt in the coaching then that push back becomes less apparent #dtk12chat
Sure, but there's no prioritizing. It's "at the same time." Always putting others first seems impractical to me. That's the recipe for teacher burnout (forgetting self-care) and would result in the same for our students as well. #dtk12chat
Ts need to have time to learn, understand, experiment with & internalize #DesignThinking & mindsets. It’s deeper than going through the process & we need to allow time 4 Ts to get comfortable. Can learn along w/Ss by being open & transparent. #dtk12chat#weareallprototypes
How do we do this...truly...in cultures that value evaluation over reflection and assessment? High stakes, too. This is my daily question. Gotta believe that even there, DT gets us closer to whatever ideal we are seeking. #dtk12chat
We were (sadly) joking the other day that kids come in our doors curious, we beat it out of them, and then they have to buy self-help books to learn how to be creative again #dtk12chat
A1: I want to start to help Ss look outward - to truly see things outside of their own bubble. Giving opportunities to notice and reflect as a foundation for empathy building. #dtk12chat
It's important for us to be able to experience what it feels like to be in the weeds. And then how #designthinking protocols and coaching can bring us back out. #dtk12chat P.S. I heart you, @MsKikiJ11
This is brilliant. How did Ss respond? Any overwhelm? How to manage the tough stuff if it comes up? I don't think we talk about this enough w/DT. #dtk12chat
I modeled by placing anxiety in a “bubble”, then made a web of specific moments I felt this emotion. It was a great way to narrow down their stories to small moments too. We started prewriting today and they did so well by staying on topic and keeping that “small moment.”
A2: Oh man. Hot button. We HAVE to be do-ers in this! I think we need to commandeer our PD opportunities as much as possible in little ways to DT the problems within. As staff start to see the positive impacts, perhaps it can become a part of the culture. #dtk12chat
Q3: So many great ideas tonight. And a lot of problems, too. What HMW question can we individually tackle this year to make some progress on creating the culture we all know Ss & Ts deserve? #dtk12chat
Very hard when leadership isn’t on board. In my experience, even harder with insecure leadership. #designthinking doesn’t work when u have an agenda.forces u 2 trust the process will take u 2 the rite place. If in that envir, need 2 build on making impact where we can. #dtk12chat
They do, we have to watch when teachers are at a moment where that learning can make the biggest impact, while also drawing back and knowing when they're overloaded.

#dtk12chat A?) (Popping in late and noticing culture chat) My inspiration today from David Bryne's NPR interview. I feel so fortunate to have seen him live last spring. This is not surface level culture. This is real, welcoming, and replicable. https://t.co/VWDlgxgbNq
LOVE THIS! I'm planning a cardboard building challenge the first few days back, and really want them to reflect on their collaboration throughout. This would be perfect. #dtk12chat

I would have got stuck & frustrated without the coaching. There was a point early on where we were off track & did not seem to be finding our way back. The protocols where essential. I really 'got' the protocols. #dtk12chat
I saw David about a month ago. Amazing show. I saw him in early 90s in the Rei MoMo tour. He has branched out in so many ways and is using his art and music to bridge so many interesting subjects. Saw this video a late last year. Love it. Thanks for reminding me #dtk12chat
make a video!! use @AdobeSpark and students create what it looks like, it'd be a PSA on curiosity and creativity, bright and shiny from the students, dull and gray from some teachers, a sprinkling of design thinking and the video becomes full of color and wonder #dtk12chat

A2: I think leaders have to truly believe it and experience it along side the teachers. Planning together and modeling getting their own hands dirty - for real. And letting teachers play with the work, giving them the space to do it. @SarahZRaskin is so good at this! #dtk12chat
So important. I worry about empathy work sometimes. Balancing problem seeking and solving with opportunity seeking and building is important. So much more I want to say here even from a parent perspective. We need to avoid coaching codependent behavior.#dtk12chat

That's what we mean by "trusting the process." You'll get where you need to go if you really honour it. It's easy to say but very hard to do! #dtk12chat
I think it keeps us honest, too. And the process is shameless. All who commit know flaws and failure are expected. It is protective and forgiving that way. #dtk12chat

A3: HMW develop entry points for reluctant teachers & leaders so that Ss, Ts, & Ls can see/reap the benefits of DT in action - and deepen buy-in? #dtk12chat
It can be very hard and uncomfortable when you get deep into it. I am concerned that there is a lot of surface level DT going around. better than not doing at all, and staying in the fun/playful part of it doesn’t get to breakthroughs in the same way. Make sense? #dtk12chat

Right. You get me, then. All of these messages empaths are getting about suicide and how they can "make a difference" for kids at risk. This concerns me. #dtk12chat

I totally agree. The kind of DT I practice and teach isn't surface level. It's deep and hard and meaningful. That's a different kind of DT than a lot of what I see. #dtk12chat
A2. For me, it will require the courage to empower teachers to understand the protocols and find the success together. Small successes, I think...? #dtk12chat

I actually think lots of DT protocols work well for introverts. Working in small groups, giving think time for reflection before collaboration, an attitude of "yes and" rather than "yeah but." As an introvert, these are all things I appreciate. #dtk12chat
