    Q1 Let's get this started #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:08 PM EST
A1 I taught English overseas for a number of years, worked in an international school which was like a mini UN and back in rural Sask which has changed a lot since back in the day; more diversity now which rocks #saskedchat
  • karataylorKT Nov 16 @ 9:08 PM EST
#saskedchat is also happening now #eci831

A1: No significant experience, but am taking ELNG 200 which is devoted to looking at second language acquisition. Eye opening class. #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:10 PM EST
What were some of the things you found eye opening about it? #saskedchat
    In reply to @JadonVilleneuve
  • wesaquje Nov 16 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: I have had a small population of EAL students in my classroom each year of my teaching career. #saskedchat
  • WebTheFox Nov 16 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1 Last school year from Nov to March I was an tutor in RPL's EAL program. As a math person, it gave me confidence in my ability to teach language. #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:13 PM EST
It can be hard too when as a native speaker English is so automatic; explaining grammar, etc to someone who may not be fam with things or asks why can be challenging too #saskedchat
    In reply to @WebTheFox
  • JadonVilleneuve Nov 16 @ 9:13 PM EST
For example, teaching younger children how to learn language. They are amazingly motivated learners. Some children are able to comprehend words at a younger age than I ever expected. #saskedchat

    Q2 Let's keep rolling #saskedchat
  • karataylorKT Nov 16 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2: Another perspective that is VERY different than that of my other, rural students. They help open the door to new ideas and worldviews #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2 If they've come from a different country they usually bring a fresh perspective with them which can help everyone #saskedchat
  • JadonVilleneuve Nov 16 @ 9:16 PM EST
Diversity! They can show Canadian students their culture, and vice versa. #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:17 PM EST

  • karataylorKT Nov 16 @ 9:19 PM EST
Right now I have students that did not speak any English on the first day of school who have been in my WA 10 class. We work on the math and basic terminology in class such as the name of different shapes. #saskedchat

A2: Diversity! Last year my EAL students did mini-language lesssons with our class. #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:21 PM EST
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:22 PM EST
That sounds awesome. Do you have an example at all #saskedchat

Bonjour #saskedchat Je m’appelle Kelly. Je suis un etudant a l’unversity de Regina.
  • kellywchris Nov 16 @ 9:23 PM EST
#saskedchat I’m just taking a break on route to Meadow Lake for 5A provincial volleyball as my son is playing on the Leboldous Suns.
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:23 PM EST
Salut! Comment etait le match de volleyball? Qui a gagne? #saskedchat

  • JadonVilleneuve Nov 16 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3: Communicating when they have a lack of skills in English. Making friends and learning in the classroom could be a problem. #saskedchat
  • karataylorKT Nov 16 @ 9:24 PM EST
    Congrats! Bonne chance! #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • WebTheFox Nov 16 @ 9:24 PM EST
A2 Diversity, and a sense of community! It can allow the classroom to become a bit of a culture exchange, everyone learning a bit about each other. #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Nov 16 @ 9:25 PM EST
They begin tomorrow. Just drive by a bit today so we don’t have to drive as far tomorrow. I’ll keep #saskedchat posted.

  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3 A challenge is definitely the English language; it's a very mixed up language historically speaking which can pose tons of problems in itself #saskedchat
  • karataylorKT Nov 16 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: I have found that certain words, even when they think they know them are hard. Ex. How many definitions do you know for "present"? #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:26 PM EST
It can be intimidating when there's a majority of native speakers and you're the one struggling to keep up; especially in older years #saskedchat
    In reply to @JadonVilleneuve
  • kellywchris Nov 16 @ 9:26 PM EST
    Merci #saskedchat

  • WebTheFox Nov 16 @ 9:27 PM EST
A3 That initial roadblock of social interaction can sometimes be tough. It can be tough, and even intimidating to socialize when you are not comfortable with the majority language. #saskedchat
  • asingh2 Nov 16 @ 9:27 PM EST
Hi all! Amy- TL in Regina Public- here, but mostly lurking as I am getting my kids to bed! #saskedchat

Lurk and chime in whenever you can :.) #saskedchat
    In reply to @asingh2
  • wesaquje Nov 16 @ 9:29 PM EST
A3: I think social conventions. Some examples that come to mind are ‘the dab’ and bottle flipping! #saskedchat
  • karataylorKT Nov 16 @ 9:30 PM EST
A4: Visuals, visuals, visuals. My students are also awesome at being patient and trying to help explain, using Google when necessary to find the right words. #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:30 PM EST
A4 One tip I might have is to look a bit at an EAL's mother tongue if there's some repeated mistakes (gain perspective); is the grammar structure the same, phonetic vs non phonetic language, etc #saskedchat
  • JadonVilleneuve Nov 16 @ 9:30 PM EST
A4- I think making the learner feel comfortable is the most important thing. Also, do not discourage them to stop using their native language all together. #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:32 PM EST
A4 Depending on the age and level of English learning through physical movement can helpful #saskedchat
  • WebTheFox Nov 16 @ 9:33 PM EST
A4 Graphic novels and comics! My RPL students would read these with my for the first half of our sessions. It helped with the application of sight words within sentences, and made the burden of learning English fun! #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:33 PM EST
Like all students if they feel comfortable and connected to school they'll participate in their own way and contribute to the class #saskedchat

  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:34 PM EST
  • WebTheFox Nov 16 @ 9:36 PM EST
If anything, I find it develops a better understanding of the language when the students can use both interchangeably. #saskedchat

  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:36 PM EST
A5 For elementary Ss https://t.co/ukv7khLged is good (worth $25 a year); lots of games, flashcards, etc for vocab plus you can make your own custom lists within the website #saskedchat
  • karataylorKT Nov 16 @ 9:36 PM EST
A5: I make my own vocab sheets to support my math learners. Using Google translate is okay but https://t.co/34Eo15PnlX is more accurate (but more time consuming) #saskedchat
  • JadonVilleneuve Nov 16 @ 9:38 PM EST
A5: Considering I do not have a classroom of my own I will talk about something I feel is useful, and that is Google Translate. #saskedchat
  • WebTheFox Nov 16 @ 9:38 PM EST
I never actually thought of finding dual language books haha. Most of the ones at my branch were French-English. The nice part with comic-based content though is the visual almost takes the place of the dual-language aspect :) #saskedchat
    In reply to @asingh2
  • asingh2 Nov 16 @ 9:39 PM EST
A5: depending on age/st. I have used Starfall & duo lingo, as well as epic and tumble books #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:40 PM EST
  • WebTheFox Nov 16 @ 9:41 PM EST
A5 Memory/Flash cards work really well, and there is an endless supply of premade ones online. I also had my student using Duolingo at home for practice. #saskedchat
  • karataylorKT Nov 16 @ 9:42 PM EST
A6: There are lots of ways but I like digital portfolio apps like @Seesaw allow them to see what is going on visually and Ss can annotate in multiple languages if needed. #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:42 PM EST
    A6 SeeSaw portfolio's have a translate feature for parentshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcTDCMqHxVE #saskedchat
  • WebTheFox Nov 16 @ 9:43 PM EST
That is awesome to know. Just recently started exploring SeeSaw, didn't realize they included a translate feature! #saskedchat
    In reply to @karataylorKT, @Seesaw
  • asingh2 Nov 16 @ 9:43 PM EST
A6: There is a huge opportunity to connect in the online space, SeeSaw is one visual/audio way sts &ts can share with families #saskedchat

  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:46 PM EST
A6 Like anything try to make connections in person too; learning a couple of words in their language could help #saskedchat
  • WebTheFox Nov 16 @ 9:47 PM EST
I used this with my URChoir cohorts on our Cuba tour this past May! It worked great in a museum, and they have an offline mode so you can use it outside of the school. #saskedchat

Q7 Last question for the night! #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:49 PM EST
A7 Try to skype or slow skype with classes from other countries; there are opportunities if you look a bit #saskedchat
  • JadonVilleneuve Nov 16 @ 9:51 PM EST
A7: I think having a word of the day from different languages could help including different languages into the everyday lessons. Bring as much diversity and language as we can!! #saskedchat
  • karataylorKT Nov 16 @ 9:51 PM EST
A7: I like integrating the history of math terms, breaking them down to their roots to help understanding this helps native English and EAL learners. #saskedchat
  • karataylorKT Nov 16 @ 9:52 PM EST
A7: I also sometimes bring my French out and start the lesson in French to throw them off, one of my students understands but the others get to know the feeling #saskedchat
  • JadonVilleneuve Nov 16 @ 9:52 PM EST
Thanks #saskedchat for another information filled evening. Have a good weekend everyone.
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:52 PM EST
A7 https://t.co/FFG9CCcubH With our Words Their Way Lists I sometimes put them in different languages for students to translate; they love it and it's interesting to them languages that have sim and diff with English #saskedchat
  • WebTheFox Nov 16 @ 9:52 PM EST
A7 I remember doing Pen Pals, a I expect with modern technology this can be a rich experience. However, the music nerd in me has to say MUSIC! Lyrical music is a natural form of linguistic and culture exchange, and can be applied to the classroom. #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Nov 16 @ 9:53 PM EST
