Delighted to be co-hosting this week's with - this is a hot topic and one that needs to be discussed!
Well being. Allow them to teach again! Try to get rid of as much red tape as you can.
Staff wellbeing focus was a key tool to secure buy-in to vision &values & rebuilding morale on our journey out of Special Measures
lots of support, give them time out of class to refocus and prioritise or things quickly get out of control
Let me first start by saying that I am really happy that found & prepared to host this session!
A1 I think this depends on the difficult situation, not all sits are the same
reduce the pressure and workload on teachers
Been there! When morale is at its lowest, wellbeing becomes even more significant https://t.co/a7UlxBmpYl
Staff wellbeing focus was a key tool to secure buy-in to vision &values & rebuilding morale on our journey out of Special Measures
hi Niomi, I'll be popping in as best can tonight
could you define "difficult" please?
- suggestions on how to reduce workload?
Difficult situations are a particularly great place to focus on wellbeing. Get staff to put on own oxygen mask & then help others!
Q1 a little freedom and trust, leadership style important too. Are staff being listened to and respected or merely directed
remind teachers of previous successes in times of difficulty, reassurance, recognition
I agree, but this is different from teachers finding themselves in difficult situations...
Here, Here https://t.co/IDofCVA5FU
Let me first start by saying that I am really happy that found & prepared to host this session!
Each person's 'as you can' is very different. Should there be a line in the sand?
very true -wellbeing needs to be a priority - more effective teaching - better learning
Have high expectations but be flexible. Remove barriers to enable teachers to teach in a way that supports learners in their class
A1 by putting it as a central strand in school development plan/strategy/ethos and speak to staff about how to improve
Certainly agree, but difficult situstions differ for pple
A line is again difficult to define. Everyone has differing thresholds.
A1: host several staff team building sessions each year, have a staff suggestion box
A1 If appropriate get them back into a classroom or project so that they are engaged in meaningful work. https://t.co/7iBIiO2dgo
agree, but his can this be achieved within a busy curriculum?
Even OFSTED measures staff morale...
Both are difficult situations but for different reasons
Have you seen: Eating and competing: Why you should gamify your teachers - Innovate My School https://t.co/h4FGIwdJGM
yes very true, I don't think wellbeing is a 'one size fits all' model
A1 A very important idea to take into account for 's first question is, in my opinion: "akademische Freiheit"!
I abandoned unannounced formal Obs & lengthy lesson plans on day1. Then asked staff to plan for learning & meet needs of learners
A1: restoration of well-being involves teacher owning the journey & school providing the required support. https://t.co/dlZ8itL7Gn
Looked after does not always mean less work though! :-)
and surely let teachers teach
It's about building resilience
music to my ears! Removing formal obs can be transformational
listen to them & their concerns; see what would be most effective for wellbeing, it's about recharging themselves. Clearer mind.
what do you think the key barriers are for A1
indeed, Like that word - Resilience - what is resilience though?
Excellent analogy, but sometimes pple don't know how to get out of difficult sits by themselves
I was hoping to get through tonight without the O word cropping up! :-)
agree, just wanted to clarify your position
indeed, all are in it together, it not up to just the SLT etc..
A classic talk for : 10 years old and still thought-provoking, Ken Robinson on schools and creativity https://t.co/CaNP0eO7lr
A classic talk for : 10 years old and still thought-provoking, Ken Robinson on schools and creativity https://t.co/vNj5Cb0I2H
Being able to deal with tough scenarios & remaining positive throughout!
A1 Speak to the teachers, find out how they can be helped/supported. Put plans in place
A1: it's amazing what a cup of tea and a chat can achieve!
A1 we have staff wellbeing weeks to help staff have time to socialise
couldnโt agree more! :-)
Teachers need to feel safe that they won't be judge and that they are supported in difficult times.
must be difficult to remove teachers from the firing line in difficult times??
Leadership style can either stifle in this situation or create a platform to allow growth & wellbeing https://t.co/2xjv8exyzV
Q1 a little freedom and trust, leadership style important too. Are staff being listened to and respected or merely directed
Hangs head in shame... shall I delete the tweet? lol
there has to be a culture that it is okay to talk, okay to make mistakes. Wonโt happen overnight.
Like this idea. Time for staff to be human.
A1: ensure concerns are listened to and plans in put place to act upon issues. Tangible support from colleagues/SLT
speaking as a NQT I've found out tiredness is the major factor and then its impact
Exactly! Stop measuring. Develop staff. CPD is the key to transformation. Liberate & unshackle staff! https://t.co/EiUuTLMRSU
music to my ears! Removing formal obs can be transformational
Still amazes me how many HT's won't give up formal obs.
This chat's second question is coming up!
-
although the expectations might lead us to believe that we are not lol
I don't think removing is the answer....
A culture where mistakes are embraced is something special... https://t.co/wTZmu1SRok
there has to be a culture that it is okay to talk, okay to make mistakes. Wonโt happen overnight.
lol you are right there ;)
- I would love to know the reasons for this?
Tired teachers make them so ineffective
A1 Difficult situations can be made easier by having a supportive ethos. Better for wellbeing if Ts know help is available
A2 credit where credit is due. Ppl have good ideas, listen to those, develop them but acknowledge whose idea it was
From what I see its that they either don't trust the staff or themselves?
Quite often the structures we put in place to improve, create a burden & shackle staff. Abandon 'stuff'! https://t.co/n0ODuVozWC
what do you think the key barriers are for A1
Q1 ST solution - allow chance to diffuse from diff & potentially emotionally charged situation via immediate time-out.
Definitely. Someone needs to take the lead to make sure staff know its ok
so removing graded lesson obs helps ? A1
either way, without trust the wheels will soon come off!
yes, schools need to be creative in providing more teacher time for key things they're asked to do...
develop whole school ethos of wellbeing/direct to Twitter colleagues wellbeing/offer meditation/mindfulness.
We used to have a Friday afternoon in pub. Socialise and relax
Model looking after self & looking after others & how to make a difference to lives of learners https://t.co/Hii1Crimrk
Excellent analogy, but sometimes pple don't know how to get out of difficult sits by themselves
That happens all too often
Q2 a culture of truth is essential then positive support will be much more effective
has to be a plan of tiered support in school so if a person can't manage a task there are others around to jump in.
a1 give them extra time out of class. Depending on issue, organise more training, staff support etc.
I like the idea of giving staff more time to cater to students needs, rather than prove they are catering to students needs,
resilience is a key one. There will be tough days to get through. Teamwork too. Can't do it all on your own.
I like it! Team building and creating a culture of togetherness https://t.co/uTS9dAN0uk
We used to have a Friday afternoon in pub. Socialise and relax
Key word in this question is values. I'd say honesty, respect and care for teachers and students...
fear & apprehension will not create better teachers. It will close them off; wellbeing support crucial from leadership.
A2 - the values of mutual respect and support with openess and sharing being central to professional development
Model the leadership of wellbeing, then make sure all leaders rise to expectations. No place for bullies in the workplace
supporting teaching mean leading. Not always the SLT.
cannot disagree with those!
Q2, A2: in this respect, there's the almighty saying that FAIL means "first attempt in learning" and that mistakes are okay!
Important to create a sustainable collegiate approach within the school. Everyone looking out for each other. Ethos= lived values.
look at the causes of the difficulties, is it part of the establishment that needs to be changed.
. and SLT should ensure people feel they can ask for help without judgement
a2 empathy, positivity, Self belief, awareness of delicate balance-supporting staff but also allowing them to grow.
PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) and Understanding
This is essential - SLT shouldn't be feared..... https://t.co/7W4vXn75UR
. and SLT should ensure people feel they can ask for help without judgement
Q1 LT solution? Open attitudes to impact of work on physical and MH & training on challenging scenarios. Have to be top down.
I believe many HTs think that Ofsted want it! CPD for HTs. It's also a 'crutch' to have facts & figures! https://t.co/QzwAq0giB1
- I would love to know the reasons for this?
This wonderful chat about is about to launch its third quesion ... The hashtag will keep you posted, in 3 minutes!
Together, sort out the clutter, especially of planning, that can impact heavily on personal time. Clarity of development narrative
Modelling is good indeed, but that requires leaders to be visible and not hidden away
A2: Respect and recognition of skills and qualities. Encourage/provide pathway of opportunities where poss. Nurture
YES! Have heard some horror stories on here about SLT's treating their colleagues like autonomous robots!
3 positives occurences a day and 1 negative will help to build resilience - read that today
A2 the value most important is to ensure staff are treated with unconditional positive professional regard and supported
A2: key values in developing facilitators:
- lifelong learning
- integrity
- equipping others
https://t.co/ZmDor8kYlj
A1: Remembering to praise colleagues just like we do so much with children & always give public show of support
A2 you know it's going wrong when there is no conversation about values - win at all costs mentality
staff need to feel that they are respected and trusted to do they job. It is OK to make mistakes, we are all learning in a school
Not saying ppl on here are not visible enough...
this is a shame, CPD indeed - somebody needs to dispel these myths!
Leaders have to remember that they only achieve through the focused efforts of the team. Keeping the team together is SLT role.
resilience and time to develop/grow
This is why I say credit where credit is due
Q2. honesty & integrity utmost importance. Creates safety & security & supports liberating potential.
kindness to both teachers and students, it's a long and challenging game that we play.
how can we develop resilience?
SLT should model & then MLT should model, etc.
Create the culture & ethos of wellbeing
Really important to make teacher and adults feel values,. Everyone in school.
genuine praise as empty praise can harm also
Need to make sure we stand up for what is best
High quality communication in all forms is needed to keep everyone "in the picture". Efficiency and effectiveness.
make sure we do not just make decision that make โOFSTEDโ happy
a3 By listening to staff and not talking at them but to them
many HTs like using strategies for wellbeing. They've offered to share with leadership.
Clarity and transparency are key.... https://t.co/xbxESxKAiT
High quality communication in all forms is needed to keep everyone "in the picture". Efficiency and effectiveness.
my old once said 'how can I judge someone as a teacher without doing it myself?' Think there's truth in that.
Need to have a clear focus
A2 being approachable and honest! Getting to know you personally as well and not being judgemental!
& others often speak for Ofsted &'myth bust' . Only a HT with head in sand doesn't realise now https://t.co/9q3oZg2ddz
this is a shame, CPD indeed - somebody needs to dispel these myths!
but well being and healthy need to be factored into time frame.
always good to receive positive feedback though
the chat may become fluffy & stating Monty Python's bleeding obvious. A focus on quality education can mean being tough on staff?
constant communication (formal and informal) between staff and SLT
A3 By responding to the needs, being proactive and ensuring that staff wellbeing is always on the agenda https://t.co/p4FMzaxTp0
people appreciate genuine praise & a show of appreciation for &
Reduce unnecessary workload. Have shorter mtgs, cancel mtgs if not needed, bin unnecessary proformas for monitoring
I agree, empty praise is no good, but there is always positives to find
Q2. Reflective & high EI so you are acutely aware of workload -what's necessary & what's tick box. Allow teachers space to do job
Leadership need to have well being at its core when deciding time frame etc.
ask the question to those who have shown success. People will tell you those leaders who support and how they do it.
a3 leaders/governors to be more accountable for wellbeing of their staff. Ensuring support is in place.
A3 leaders should be open to new ideas but equally should stand firm in their developing knowledge
And allowing teachers to say if meetings are useless so they can change formats
by spending time IN the classroom!
support networks, championing individuals and promote the power of being part of a team and a critical friend
Leadership shouldn't always be the SLT when looking a well being, this included all staff in the school
A2 Trust and transparency
Clichรฉ, but walk the walk and always know how with show how. Actions speak louder...
agree. The staff on the ground know best
Typicality of TLA gained through LWs, work scrutiny, student voice etc. Don't need LOs to know my teachers https://t.co/s0EVLgsC3q
more details please? It's a nice idea but how do you QA?
so important not to have bullies; yet I know of many that exist; past experience
a3 when leaders are appointed, it should be priority they can develop staff and their skill set should show this.
q3: profile of teachers needs to be level with doctors. Currently teachers get bad press. And it's unfair.
A3: promote status of wellbeing through ethos and policy. Regular PM cycle and CPD opportunities
acknowledge and support basic needs (Maslow)... wellbeing, headspace, reflection time
Transparency!! Openness to ideas an change Openness to other needing support.
A3 Providing those on the front line with opportunties for development
Introduced weekly 'Wellbeing Star of the Week'. Staff nominate staff who've made a difference to them during the week.
very true, how could we achieve this?
lead by example, listen to ideas, observe, smile, work together.
Q2. Creating culture of risk taking on classrooms has positive effects on many levels inc staff & students.
honesty, trust, respect & belief in your staff. Build the team.
Ha ha this chat is a metaphor for school life. Snatched words shouted in bursts and frantic catching up! Calm down - slow down.
Keen to hear from schools informed by DfE about identifiable personal data uses of National Pupil Database https://t.co/XyPqlZFnov
we frequently talk about wellbeing and mental health of students but can overlook or fail to look after our incredible workforce
is this an option? How can you get all staff to participate in this?
A valid point here... https://t.co/hl7FW9ffju
we frequently talk about wellbeing and mental health of students but can overlook or fail to look after our incredible workforce
Such an awesome list to try and work by https://t.co/TAEiAZNCJP
honesty, trust, respect & belief in your staff. Build the team.
It's all about the development! Quality CPD & coaching to grow & nurture talent, challenge issues etc https://t.co/1giK8bXr8x
A3 Providing those on the front line with opportunties for development
Often change is slow but doesn't mean we don't introduce it
this has been my mantra in work for 18 months. smiling crucial.
what do we do if this is slow. Doesnโt it affect the staff and pupils?
what evidence? Willing to share?
But also development in sense of where school goes, vision etc
A3: the leadership model should recognise that teachers ARE leaders of learning & teachers modelling this. https://t.co/Wkw8GqTGus
TRUST teachers, support them to excellence, coaching, open, honest teamwork - collaboration.
know your values; be them, breathe them & act on them everyday. Be honest with yourself as a leader.
A3 if they don't, they are hardly 'models'
Mid parent's evening, always made sure I delivered tea and biscuits to each class teacher.
has very interesting ideas on : modal verbs do have nuances! proves slight difference between CAN & MAY!
Slow change is fine. Doesn't have to be fast. Our school had teacher of term... Pple loved
A1 Ensure CPD opportunities for all, share allocated days/money/time https://t.co/ggVYMDSVwH
A3: promote status of wellbeing through ethos and policy. Regular PM cycle and CPD opportunities
to date we haven't heard any school aware of commercial use and press using identifiable | DfE claims schools informed?
Staff perception q'nnaires feedback overwhelmingly embraced it.Helped create culture of wellbeing & caring https://t.co/4iPasRygpe
is this an option? How can you get all staff to participate in this?
Our research suggests that many teachers do not feel like they have enough input in the creation of future resources..
I'll be taking over from with 3 more thought provoking questions. Q4 coming up at 8:32pm
What have I missed? Who's in charge?
Tho difficult, this is so true!
during our staff week we ran an introduction to great feedback
If you're out and about, you can spot things to comment positively on.
...sorry - What is tonight's topic?
Important to be aware that we bring people on the journey of school develop' rather than dragging them along kicking & screaming
did you teach in an international school? :-P
A3: Consider staff before personal/school gain & provide lots of opportunities for
Very true! https://t.co/hPieg4reHz
SLT that aren't classroom based MUST remember what being in the classroom entails.
Q4: How does the leadership of T&L in your school impact upon teacher morale & wellbeing? Examples please https://t.co/ogplPsk27v
this is so true and I do it every day!
agreed;that's why good leadership not easy, yet possible if you see leaders like in action https://t.co/OsojiyuB7u
Tho difficult, this is so true!
In , working together as colleagues is the only way to achieve ANYTHING!
Relational and collaborative
A3 Trust teachers. Listen to concerns and act on them. Avoid adding more and more priorities/initiatives. Value wellbeing,
Best Tweet! https://t.co/zPj3Hx5SKc
TRUST teachers, support them to excellence, coaching, open, honest teamwork - collaboration.
yes the notion we are all in this together is crucial.
We needed rapid progress due to SM. Staff welcomed focus on their wellbeing instead of sustained pressure! https://t.co/6kwmwKgLro
what do we do if this is slow. Doesnโt it affect the staff and pupils?
This is what happens to our personality under moderate/severe stress!! Called being "in the grip" https://t.co/Dqx5HKXFz4
Likewise. So important to be visible and supporting colleagues. https://t.co/6gFk6wMGfC
this is so true and I do it every day!
A4 Tea and biscuits and valuing ppl's input go a long way...
I like your use of focus. A focus is good pressure is counterproductive
thank you.. just saying what should be taking place in schools everywhere.
Too easy to become desk bound, concentrating on the "busyness", ignore reality.
trust is important; remove barriers so teachers can do their job. Great ideas in book by
Showing that you are actually human and that you care for them
Be explicit with our expectations and what behaviours we expect to see
If school gain isn't first we lose purpose. Prioritising doesn't mean lack of staff. We can do more than one thing?
Transparency & open dialogue. Create opportunities to share & build practice. Support next generation of leaders.
Making sure that you do not lose sight of classroom practise etc.
Teamwork all the way, without a supportive team around you, your job just get's harder and harder! https://t.co/xunBj0kkei
TRUST teachers, support them to excellence, coaching, open, honest teamwork - collaboration.
like this shared vision approach
Magnify strengths rather than weaknesses
embrace failure. Don't be frightened of sharing what went wrong and maybe even laugh about it!
(Cont) This could (arguably) contribute to low morale among teachers and impact on leadership of T&L.
+ just listening!!! My head is very good at doing this, will happily give me her full attention
after entirely..don't we do that in our classrooms anyway with out students๐
Sub question: What aspects of T&L in your school zaps the morale of the teachers?
How do you achieve this in a school? https://t.co/cr3RiNH0pd
Transparency & open dialogue. Create opportunities to share & build practice. Support next generation of leaders.
As always, it depends how you do it & who does it! Take leap of faith & abandon formal observations! https://t.co/8n8TMYXbMg
like it in theory but I do think triangulation is needed plus is a LW not really a 'mini obs'?
Q4 Leadership isn't about inspiring people, it's about being inspired. Starts with YOU
really struggle to understand any leadership model that doesn't respect teachers. More an individual decision & mindset issue
Very good point! https://t.co/OkGfwJjHgx
+ just listening!!! My head is very good at doing this, will happily give me her full attention
Listening 'my time is your time' is a fantastic leadership trait... https://t.co/DREPZFPXGn
+ just listening!!! My head is very good at doing this, will happily give me her full attention
There may be great wellbeing policies in place, but the environment is not enabling.
Great point https://t.co/9Q2l2XNcRF
A3 Trust teachers. Listen to concerns and act on them. Avoid adding more and more priorities/initiatives. Value wellbeing,
identified crunch points where staff would benefit from a week of no meetings. Curry night, pottery club, yoga etc
A4 - recently, leaders saying thank you. Realised that I just wasn' used to it
the dreaded 'book scrutiny' or a wave of observations without a focus.
I think it either motivates you and your practice.. Or demotivates you!! Either way, good or bad, you are impacted!
Depends if focus on T&L is supporting teachers to reflect & develop own practice (even within a framework), or to rank/score/judge
A4 You know you have established well-being when crises are avoided and there is team resilience; keeping things in perspective.
a4 hugely. Pos-org peer obs in own/other schools, identify teachers passion + extend thru training, leaders teaching.
This is a very poignant point. Listening can sometimes be one our most powerful assets. https://t.co/8WguK8TSG7
+ just listening!!! My head is very good at doing this, will happily give me her full attention
Yes, the focus is key. They need to happen but it's how they are conducted that's crucial
valid point. How many leaders appointed solely on ability for process/policy without ability to lead?
A4 I've noticed that my demeanour (as principal) can impact the school very quickly. It's that simple! https://t.co/ApS0hMxLMO
Q4: How does the leadership of T&L in your school impact upon teacher morale & wellbeing? Examples please https://t.co/ogplPsk27v
Likewise by . Simple & effective advice
Q4: developing idea of subject teams. This approach utilises specialisms and encourages involvement and ownership.
You have to be brave enough to take your eye off Ofsted and focus on your people
In three minutes' time, it is already time for this chat's 5th question.
Join to receive it, if you haven't joined in yet!
Yes but school gain shouldn't result in teachers' suffering. Exhausted/over-worked teachers = worse T&L
Focussing on what went wrong and leaving out the areas that went well... https://t.co/IKGFa2ZA2n
Sub question: What aspects of T&L in your school zaps the morale of the teachers?
A4 when leadership of T&L builds an ethos of celebrating and sharing good practice then positive builds
I agree ๐ We must engineer opportunities for this to happen
Usually between 10-30 nominations/week. It also gives me a great overview of who's 'sharing the love'๐โค๏ธ https://t.co/PSYGPp2DHy
Why would anyone do that?
I think sharing of practice is key.
Being 'nice' gets a bad press
if we can move the school forward without negatively affecting staff it's a win-win situation
sense of humour&sharing learning -like teachers do in the classroom helps build giveitago positivity
here today because of bell end of atkinsonplayers like i enjoyed paddington more left to good tried to
Isn't this education nirvana? https://t.co/q6N6bCt70y
if we can move the school forward without negatively affecting staff it's a win-win situation
how does a school not thank its staff? I don't understand this - if this truly happens, no wonder morale is low!
A4 When leaders ignore the concerns expressed. put them down to teachers moaning. Listen to whispers before they become roars.
Had my eye firmly on Ofsted, but know they don't want grades - they want me to know my staff! https://t.co/2c3zlX4dDP
You have to be brave enough to take your eye off Ofsted and focus on your people
If it doesn't transform practice and therefore student learning gains why bother?
yes...are they therefore leaders or just managers? Huge issue in education compared to commercial sector
trust is important as professionals so long as ppl know expectations and consequences. Feeling supported, being thanks are crucial
We must listen with the intent to understand rather than with the intent to reply
here's a boulder into the pond... I once had to sack 5 teachers to improve a school. They had been indulged for years...
I don't think you need infrastructure. It just needs one person to start the ball rolling...
Q5 - Appraisal, or is it more 'performance management'? Are you forced to include whole school targets? https://t.co/vn7MRvsMMr
A4: leadership intention & practice to value wellbeing should be in alignment. If not this affects morale. https://t.co/dOoaQBuPeA
used to be graded observations. We don't grade now. Culture of open door, praise and learning communities
Not far off and definitely achievable with strong, effective leaders!
I've been into >100 schools in the last 12 months & I would say that in 65% the general 'vibe' is not a positive one... (1 of 2)
But there is always smthg positive to be seen
sometime you need to do what you need to do. But was in the the greater good to sack them?
Totally agree, nothing worse that goal posts being moved. https://t.co/PEa9Xdz7Ma
trust is important as professionals so long as ppl know expectations and consequences. Feeling supported, being thanks are crucial
WOW..... https://t.co/446z7EAMCG
I've been into >100 schools in the last 12 months & I would say that in 65% the general 'vibe' is not a positive one... (1 of 2)
We need to be careful not to move into the realms of appointing business leaders rather than passionate educational leaders!
Yes! All schools need to be braver...! https://t.co/obTJFWZYRZ
You have to be brave enough to take your eye off Ofsted and focus on your people
we had 15-20 staff sign up each evening and great feedback open to all staff in school. 100 adults able to sign up,
EQ is essential in leadership.
A5 I think targets should be formative and teachers' own choice not prescribed
I've always questioned the EI maybe leaders should have training on this in education.
leaders need to ensure they don't keep moving 'goalposts' teachers need to know where they are going and how to get there.
"creating a climate where the truth is heard" - helps the sch move forward AND people feel involved, grievances/concerns heard
A5 Appraisal interviews can only be successful if looked upon in 's view as crucial dialogues. O'wise, they don't work!
Too many schools with heads rolling in southeast on basis of Ofsted
Apprasials need to be like IEPs. Suitable targets that can actually be achieved and are realistic.
Sir John Jones calls it 'courageous leadership'. Don't wait for others...Just do what's right! https://t.co/ou69JGl00R
bravery means great risk, but when you are brave, and take that great risk, the rewards can be mind-blowing.
...to the point where I will say as much to those schools where I feel that the outlook is a positive one (2 of 2)
I think they should! For me emotional intelligence capacity in leadership should be very high!
Very worrying :-/ https://t.co/1rXR0yKTaH
I've been into >100 schools in the last 12 months & I would say that in 65% the general 'vibe' is not a positive one... (1 of 2)
sometime changes need to be made. Understand your point about them but if it improved overall morale! so be it
Goodwill is a two way street. Show people they are valued & they value what they do. Takes a little effort, but buys a great deal.
Finding something positive to highlight in T&L will always support wellbeing
if another route is tried staff need time to buy into non-grading/non perf mgt focus - that might take years not terms...
Staff supporting staff. Open classrooms. Building coaching that encourages staff to take risks. https://t.co/Ojffq9bXz4
Q4: How does the leadership of T&L in your school impact upon teacher morale & wellbeing? Examples please https://t.co/ogplPsk27v
how does this make you feel?
Staff embraced it. Currently going through redundancies &staff still nominating & looking after each other https://t.co/uBe2Nd3mLF
Q4. 10 hours writing a class of 30 reports; multiply wt other classes & do 3.5 hrs Parents evening ? ?
perfect, courage needs to be developed ... are there any articles/research on "courageous leadership"?
A4 ethos and culture based on high levels of trust and support trumps carrots and sticks every time
Agreed - focusing on solutions, rather problems... The future rather than past
It worries me how many people are talking about forced performance management targets!
Heads roll for many reasons, but never for taking staff wellbeing seriously. It can only help https://t.co/YcSgEzuwBK
Too many schools with heads rolling in southeast on basis of Ofsted
A5 we have 2 targets set for each member of staff and the third can be chosen / negotiated
A5: Isn't it about developing and supporting individuals that in turn will help move school forward to its goals?
T&L leaders in a school are in a good position to drive workload for wellbeing. How many drive as tick box exercise for evidence
You'd hope! But in some cases it's not. Especially with new academy statuses!
This makes me sad... https://t.co/xj3TQct5pJ
I worked really hard on a massive target, which luckily can be tweaked to fit the work I did but if it hadn't... :(
this My area... Appraisal & PM must begin with t's view of themselves & work from there. Hectoring about outstanding is useless..
No, I agree with you. But fear is there...
i would prefer the word โFocusedโ then โForced"
. It almost seems as if it's become an endemic problem
so would I but I know this isn't the case in all schools!
Deeply saddening. :-( https://t.co/tbOJDHHMFU
It worries me how many people are talking about forced performance management targets!
there is no way they could relate to the job teachers do without that experience
Same where I was and I found that wrong. If I have to achieve targets, I need to have say in setting them...
development of a whole school ethos of wellbeing that impacts whole staff and students is key
It is almost time for today's 6th question.
no! Ours start with 'what's gone well' and 'even better if'. The rest is based on our 6 core values
Surely if you have a competent leadership team w/a sound vision & plan not including whole sch targets is ludicrous?
A5 Appraisal should focus on individual development as teacher. If supported well, wouldn't success in sch' targets follow?
I think it's unfair that we can't use prp to our advtge, I have taken on lots of Wh/Sch Resp & can't skip pay grades
a5 some targets should be decided together, appraisal must be positive/investment in staff.
. Absolutely - the ones I've been to where such a regime exists are like entering a different world.
If leadership cannot see the link between morale and well-being of staff to learning and teaching they are unlikely to be leading
A5 forced targets if you fail one of three then entirely fail appraisal? A5
make it wholly developmental in its focus, involve them all in observing and encompass constant reflective practice.
Key word here is together, but often targets are prescribed
really good point. Sad to say have experienced driven by ego? Power? Rather than respect. https://t.co/vQbKLxFbJl
really struggle to understand any leadership model that doesn't respect teachers. More an individual decision & mindset issue
I bought out the local shop of 130 Crunchie bars. Teachers seem to have a thing for chocolate! https://t.co/KMeqCnFAyY
Thank Crunchie it's Friday works too! As does out the door by 4!
Final question coming up...
Well said! https://t.co/Oc01YTiHmv
If leadership cannot see the link between morale and well-being of staff to learning and teaching they are unlikely to be leading
We didn't fail appraisal as such, but you are left feeling a failure
All my targets are agreed tougher with my line manager.
Anyone else see irony in this chat on a half-term evening? Role modelling?
we discuss how the Whole school targets fit with each individual person.
could have both! Or in that case you need a director of learning & a finance director who work closely together.
Give you better ownership of your targets and performance.
Q6: This is a big one - What's the ONE thing leaders can do to promote wellbeing through T&L? https://t.co/XqPRX5aSNm
not just teachers, I'll be having a word with the boss
No, it's voluntary, and it's time colleagues tackle the elephant in the room https://t.co/BH0UhQvjue
Anyone else see irony in this chat on a half-term evening? Role modelling?
Absolutely! Goes great with a cuppa at the end of a busy week.
. Unfortunately, poor or non-existent appraisal is a problem that is not unique to education.
A5 Interesting is there a connection with wellbeing & appraisal? Accountability, expectations, standards. https://t.co/qD7lUYAqxr
our school has a wellbeing week of no meetings & staff leave at 4pm. https://t.co/dzAUAjs9b3
identified crunch points where staff would benefit from a week of no meetings. Curry night, pottery club, yoga etc
Final thought: A good leader should not be a hero, s/he should be a hero maker. Grow wellbeing champions!
I hope there's no trolling involved?
I've no idea what this is about, but my experiences have been fine!!
Teacher working conditions are pupil learning conditions.
I like the word investment, that's what we need to be doing.
We have personal goals (linked to opportunities for CPD) and a goal that is linked to SIP. Think this is standard practice
The best and committed teachers set their own targets and often get good results!
A6 - promote a culture of sharing - I work in a sch where all are planning the same units & lessons instead of sharing! Madness.
Possible to be both; efficiency in resource management giving space&time for quality leadership.
dedicate a briefing to teaching and learning
A4 simple "thank you" is so important. It's an acknowledgement. Even more obvious when it's not said. https://t.co/pdyC9k2MvY
A4 - recently, leaders saying thank you. Realised that I just wasn' used to it
yes, linking to SIP but constructed around objectives - dialogue
yes generated through agreement and with purpose to promote development not assessment
yes, leaders need supporting too
How do you choose which apps to recommend to parents for home learning? Free? Internet Safe? Recommended via a website? Other?
A7 Have a policy with clear guidelines about communication, work duties, expectations, breaks, mindfulness https://t.co/nktZDLfUSm
Q6: This is a big one - What's the ONE thing leaders can do to promote wellbeing through T&L? https://t.co/XqPRX5aSNm
and that you are capable of achieving them,
A5: It all boils down to increasing (& sometimes unrealistic) pressure/targets from above TA-Teacher-SLT-Governors/LA-Govt
Our Wellbeing focus is for all staff. Important all included. We all play a part in making a difference https://t.co/I1qIs3wkXi
not just teachers, I'll be having a word with the boss
when leaders stop learning and developing, it's time to go, or refocus
but many business managers make finance decisions which adversely affect teaching.
I'd probably do an hour of "CPD" on Twitter! Lol๐
positive education and have been proven to develop wellbeing of schools in UK and abroad
Agreed, yet not all can do this effectively, yet. Individ targets ultimately need to tie into whole sch https://t.co/mPI6tvRxdw
The best and committed teachers set their own targets and often get good results!
So true, you have to be credible as a leader https://t.co/LmpZ5fnRVA
Quite simply - teach at least one lesson a week. No-one gets respect at the top if they can't hack it in class.
All over UK, rural, city, small (13 pupils), large (2100 pupils), >70% PP & <5% PP - No rhyme or reason. https://t.co/IzbBWYbQln
. can you expand? what was the "vibe"?how could you tell?where were the schls?which types?
A6 before adding new initiatives, consider what you can subtract to help colleagues and they will flourish
Ensure that staff well-being is a school target every year.
Clarity & shared understanding in overarching processes allow knee-jerk reactions to be avoided.
and me! Can lose hours in twittersphere!
it's a two way street, but still a leader's responsibility to deal professionally with such situations
A6: Actually consider the impact of each request on T&L & teacher
Always enjoy these chats and huge respect for the role you all play in the lives of our children โค๏ธ๐๐๐thank you
Q6 leaders who 'walk the walk' and don't just 'talk the talk'- building relationships in classrooms alongside staff &pupils
Love this.. What do we need to STOP doing! https://t.co/Ym0teSffIl
A6 before adding new initiatives, consider what you can subtract to help colleagues and they will flourish
in the next 2 years many business mgrs are going to have to make some horrible decisions, difficult times we live in
a6 meet weekly and give every teacher a chance to say what's working well and what isn't and LISTEN!
A6 Have a clear policy on communication, expectations, accountability, breaks, mindfulness, wellbeing https://t.co/FS177c7VTc
DfE plan: make the ed system so competitive, hostile and inhospitable that only the 'strongest'/most cut throat survive.
I meet at least 1 SLT, walk part/all of the school. Not scientific just gut feeling. Am also a governor https://t.co/IzbBWYbQln
. can you expand? what was the "vibe"?how could you tell?where were the schls?which types?
meaningful praise for effort and achievement ad-hoc and not just during annual appraisals.
Lots of talk around clarity and leading by example - 'walking the walk' Leaders have to be credible
