A1: Make a connection with the content to the students' lives. I heard a HS teacher connect a review question to going on a date... everyone perked up. #hcpsteach

A1: Build a supportive environment from day one. Form connections with all of your students. Also help them to be more engaged by handing over some of the responsibilities of the classroom to them. For example, asking what they would be in interested in learning! #HCPSteach
My favorite favorite quote ever that I say probably too much hahaha... “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all” -Aristotle #HCPSTeach

Play with them. I know it sounds silly, but if they’re playing in a center, game at recess, or on the computers I try to make time to play with them. Makes you a real person in their eyes. #hcpsteach
Yup! I’ve found it interesting to share with students what I’m learning in grad school and showing them the why behind what/how I use tools and strategies in class. They think it’s super cool when I say, “let’s do this activities I did in college”! #hcpsteach
This already happens to me. I see kids out in public and they get so excited... or confused. For this reason, it is definitely important to be a good role model in all settings. #HCPSteach
A2: we start each class period with “good news”- 5 min where students share the good things happening in their lives.. it sets them into a positive place and they are ready to learn #hcpsteach
A2: This seems super simple, but greet each of your students as they walk in. Then, give them a few minutes to chat with each other and get everything out before begininning. It also relates to question 1 to help build connections! #HCPSteach
After Spring Break we will be meeting some of our students at their bus stops with donuts and juice! Which stop will we go to on what day? They will have to be at their stop to find out! #HCPSTeach
Yes! I have a coworker who does breathing exercises (and sometimes yoga poses) with his students every class period and it does wonders.. even for middle schoolers #HCPSTeach
I think breakfast and a little social time is crucial to get the kids feel comfortable! I let them choose their morning activities... @codeorg? Sure! @DrawSomething__ ? Ok! Read? Absolutely! #HCPSTeach
A2v1: take a deep breath & leave our own baggage from yesterday or last period behind. They need us to be a calming center, not unintentional escalator #HCPSteach
It’s so great! I highly recommend. They absolutely love sharing... and sometimes share hard things too so that we can empathize with one another and it just further builds that culture #HCPSTeach
Students are so creative too... this reminded me that one of my students said, “Ms. Glover, instead of tell us our pages, why don’t you make it a math problem. Like it it’s page 60 say it’s page 7x10-12+2!” Lol #hcpsteach
A3 mybsts are writing poems emulating other poets - but love when the emulation starts and you can feel/read creativity sweep over their writing #HCPSTeach
A3: we must be careful of mixed messages. We say the test isn't everything, that it doesn't tell a role picture but then have pep rallies for testing & parties connected to the results - what does that say? #HCPSTeach
A3: I think that there are tons of ways to do this! Off the top of my head, I feel giving kids options is a good idea. Let them choose how they would like to present info that they have found (poster, paper, art, etc). Journaling could be good too! #HCPSteach
Allowing choice to respond and show mastery. Notice if they hasn’t responded and inquire; that shows the Ss that you acknowledge their voice is missing. #hcpsteach

I really like that I’m seeing “celebrations” for meeting goals the students set for themselves and not necessarily a specific score or grade #HCPSTeach
A3 I received my first #GeniusHour project one day early today. I am simply giddy at the prospect of looking at all the projects coming in tomorrow. #hcpsteach
I have them go back through their learning targets from when we deconstructed the standards... I tell them as long as they show understanding of each piece, I don’t care what it looks like #HCPSteach
A4: Students need to create. Have them create a product or lesson they can share with others that will at the same time incorporate skills or content from the class. #hcpsteach
A4: it goes back to standards. If we unpack the standards and create experiences that reach the true depth and complexity than test review may not even be necessary #hcpsteach

A4 I’ve never enjoyed test prep ... so I keep tchg ... my sts today said that the writing 2 paragraphs I asked them to do this week with a writing conf helped them today #HCPSTeach
Maybe a rubric would make it feel less out of control? It’s interesting bc this seems so natural for me as an ELA person but I could see how it’s different for math #HCPSTeach
Yes. We are blessed with an amazing Science supervisor who weaves the 3rd and 4th grade standards into the curriculum maps for 5th leading up to the assessment. (The is a great resource for teachers) #HCPSTeach
A5: I met a teacher one time who was very passionate about "awesome journals". Basically, she would rotate students each week and send notes home with 1/4th of the class each Friday. That way, she sent at least one note home with every student by the end of the month. #HCPSteach
We celebrate students each month who exemplify our identified #STEM traits. In February we celebrated Risk Takers. Super proud of my own little risk taker. #HCPSTeach
A5: I am a great test taker. I loved tests. I loved getting the highest score. How do we convince that kid that tests aren't everything? They need to demonstrate in other ways? #AskingForAFriend#HCPSTeach
A5 1 student at a time ... I tell my sts to keep their eye on the prize ... graduation! They need everything now for then .. it’s a challenging task for them as they are present-minded #HCPSTeach

A5: by being thoughtful about what & how we celebrate. Creative endeavors & SEL must get equally intense recognition/celebration if we want Ss to value that success equally #HCPSTeach
Or even how do we get them to understand that a solid test score is good but not any more important that a thoughtful essay, a beautifully interpreted sonnet or a kind gesture to a classmate in need #HCPSTeach
By the way I’m the one who always messes up in the group 😂🤦🏻♀️ try it at a faculty meeting. It’s so much fun and wakes up both sides of the brain #HCPSTeach
