Welcome to another #HackLearning chat. Today we're LIVE from #Empower18. Our "hacky" topic this morning is Building Your PLN. Let's start with introductions.
Our fast-paced chat will be 3 questions in 25 minutes. Use A1 to respond to Q1 & remember to include hashtag #HackLearning in all tweets. We want to hear from #empower18 attendees this morning TOO!
Great to join the #HackLearning PLN today - fab topic on the power of connected adult learning - and cross pollination of ideas, resources, and questions happy spring from Va!
The simple act of just meeting, talking to attendees at conferences like #empower18 or an edcamp discussion is a way to build a great PLN. Follow hashtag discussions like this one on #HackLearning to add new contacts. My Personal Learning Network page https://t.co/SxqhUhRJAj
A1 We can #growPLN by showing curiosity: What brought you here? What are you working on? What inspired that? What PDs do you attend? We can share our stories to look for a connection & exchange Twitter @s. Itās sort of like dating, but usually with better results. #HackLearning
A1: I always love a chance to meet my PLN face to face at conferences. It gives you a chance to make the connection you have with them stronger.
I also love having things out and about in town for our local educators to gather and just chat. #HackLearning
A1: Easier step is grow your PLN within your school and district first. Events are great, but for longevity in education, it is helpful to have a collective of folks who are moving in the same direction locally. #HackLearning
Build your PLN by:
*Add social media to your email signature.
*Invite people to follow you
*Have a presence on SM.
*Add your handle to your business card (Cheap through Vista Print)

A1 Our PLN grows when we have conversation with people - sit down and talk about deep subjects ... share opinions and make connections ... sharing successes & failures in order to improve our craft #HackLearning
#HAckLearning Educators should talk. Just begin conversations with peers and share ideas. But first - you have to go and put yourself out there on your own time.
Good morningātrying to multitask during #empower18 by being in this chat and paying attention to my session! Great to say hi to @markbarnes19 in person yesterday and thank for all of his awesome āhackā work #hacklearning
A1: Conferences, edcamps, informal hangouts... all are great. Be sure to take advantage of the time between sessions and skip a few sessions.
That's when relationships are built and the real benefit of the meeting happens ;)
#HackLearning
Q1: I'm growing my PLN these days listening to podcasts. I know they don't talk back, but I get so much out of listening to conversations.
#HackLearning
A1. Many educators understand the need to be physically fit and join marathons together and community events. They plan them and build their #PLN around events like these. #HackLearning
A1: attending different learning opportunities outside of school is a great way to grow you #PLN. First step for me is learning how to find these opportunities! #HackLearning
A1 always good to visit cyber cafes at conf to connect - follow #tags and reach out to connect, go to sessions by PLN community members, hangout and donāt be afraid to approach ppl you recognize - connecting often feels like family #HackLearning
But what if that isnāt your best support system? Iāve found some have to cast a wider net to get the collaboration and support they might need and want. #HackLearning
A 1. I have found opening up my PD experiences to those outside of my district like #PolarPD and just asking those in my PLN to connect too, it has grown my PLN and made connections for those in my PLN that I see F2F #hacklearning
A1: Back before social media I would visit the websites for major conferences to see who won their teacher of the year awards. I would put an email together reaching out wanting to learn from then. Itās how I connected with the late Phil Lawler, the father of New PE #hacklearning
A1: before social media it was very difficult! Conference have been cut due to budget constraints and therefore co-teachers were the only way! #HackLearning
A1: Let your voice be heard and blog or attend events outside your district or even comfort zone. My blog: https://t.co/nmHucHqSAV started to be a learner and collaborate through ideas and thinking #hacklearning
A1: There is so much power in simply having conversation face to face with people that are apart of your PLN. It provides a chance to build those relationships and make further connections and just talk to get to know each other. #HackLearning
Excellent point about Podcasts growing the PLN. I have learned so much by them.
They can talk back when you reach out to the creator and ask questions or leave feedback! #HackLearning
A1: "Hi, I'm Amy!" EdCamps are a favorite for me as is our state music conference. I always put my twitter handle on my nametag though to make sure I'm able to continue to connect once the F2F event is over. #hacklearning
A1 Plan the time. Communicate ahead of time. Keep it low pressure. Make it fun (food-coffee helps). OR if you know someone is coming in to town, arrange a time to meet F2F. Had a great experience with @mgrosstaylor & @Rdene915 not to long ago. #hacklearning
A1: Determine your problem of practice & network ppl who are asking similar questions through social media or professional conferences. Discover authors & seek out who they follow. #hacklearning

I like a balance of district PLN for the face-time ... but oh so powerful are my virtual PLN members (and even greater when meeting F2F) š #HackLearning
A1: I often make an effort to attend conferences alone so I can make more connections. Attending events with colleagues has value, but sometimes we don't branch out as much when we are in a group of people we already know.
#hacklearning
Amazing the cross pollinating activities and projects that begin in district PlN - with 726 sq miles in my district, Twitter is a connector across diverse and geographically distant schools #hacklearning
Virtual PLNs are important, don't disagree. But to create sustainable change in your school and really do better for your students, you must work and collaborate with others locally. We all should be mindful of this. #HackLearning
A1 Different kind of social channel... While skiing (or alternative recreational pursuit), initiate conversations with other participants during inevitable captive moments. #HackLearning
I hope all the #HackLearning peeps who join @mssackstein at #Empower18 will tweet like mad during her session today. I'm so sad I had to cancel my trip. Really wishing I was at @ASCD with my dear friend Starr.
A1: attending conferences and meeting f2f gives a great energy and I love meeting people from my PLN who I have only virtually been connected to #hacklearning

A1: attending different learning opportunities other than within you school or even district is a great way to grow you #PLN. My first step is figuring out how to find these opportunities! #HackLearning#HackLearning
Finally met @cultofpedagogy Face to Face last year in Boston. Jen's just as sweet as you think she is. Had a great time with her @mssackstein and the #hacklearning team.
Edcamps are one of my favorite ways to connect as well. A great way to have conversations around facets of our practice and to find those who have similar interests in moving forward. #hacklearning
A2: This past weekend I had a chance to meet @HollyClarkEdu an EdTechTeam Summit. I was able to learn from her and had a chance to begin using some of the resources she shared during her sessions. It's AMAZING to know how down to Earth and friendly she is. #HackLearning
After chatting on twitter and via email for a while, it was a joy to finally meet @erickalenze at @researchED_US NYC. He did a great job organizing and the conference wonderfully aligns evidence-based practices with teachers/researchers. #HackLearning#empower2018
You rock! I have read on Twitter thoughts others have shared that they felt "put-off" by approaching a group of speaker "rock stars" as they sat together - your approach certainly removes any thoughts of not saying "hello" to you! #hackLearning
I believe virtual PLNs can supplement excellent F2F PLNs .. they can also positively supplant PLNs when collaboration & learning is lacking on your campus ... both have GREAT value to different people for different reasons ā„ļø #HackLearning
That's when district level people need to leave the house on the hill and collaborate with those in their schools, empower and listen to them. Smaller isn't prohibitive to local work and collaboration. A strong, small collective can be powerful. #HackLearning
Both of these ladies are part of my extended PLN. We chatted yesterday. @sarahdateechur and I have been chatting for years and run into each other at conferences around the country. #HACKLEARNING
A1: Every summer I choose an area of learning focus for the year. I find the āexpertsā in that area and reach out to them to learn from them as much as possible about that focus. #hacklearning
Had a great time meeting @lcruzconsulting at the PLC Conference in San Antonio. I learned so much & he took the time to talk to me personally #hacklearning
Agree. Expanding my virtual PLN helps me appreciate what teachers are doing outside my bubble and connect with like-minded and different-minded educators who push my thinking. AND, thinking only gets so far. For sustainable action we need local PLNs. #HackLearning
Was lucky enough to be in one of her seasons at #MACUL a few weeks ago! It was a great session. #hacklearning. Also got to meet @mssackstein a few years ago too at #ecet2

A2 I met @malorie_ss when she attended one of my workshops and she shared ways she teaches about social justice using literature. She told me about books that would quickly become my studentsā favorites and pushed my thinking about my units. #HackLearning
A2: I am looking forward to branching out of my shell and attending future PDs and events to have the opportunities to connect and collaborate with members of my PLN beyond the walls of my school, both in person and virtually! #hacklearning
A2: Met @MrsErinFisher through @STEAMuptheClsrm collaboration and three months later I Keynoted their event and took part of Steam podcast and now we collaborate weekly to become better educator #hacklearning
A2 I met @TanyaAvrith at a Google Conference in the fall. That was neat I just completed a webinar in the week and then I was talking to her in person. I also won her book Google Infused Classroom š #HackLearning

A2: one of the 1st I met #onhere was @ShanaVWhite . Met many like minds through her, and now we are building a network of local edus, who have gathered f2f. Have plans to meet f2f with many in my PLN this year. #HackLearning
A2 Havenāt had that happen yet but plan on it happening at #flipgridlive this summer. Hoping to meet a bunch of awesome #PLN favorites then. #HackLearning
A2 Met @gcouros at a Learning Forward Conference and he spent 45 minutes just talking to our group. He totally was off topic and because he was candid - I learned so much. #hacklearning
I remember when @ToddWhitaker walked into a LIVE chat when I was doing #TMchat wayyy back when. He came in and said "Where's Connie Hamilton?" I thought - OMG, is Todd Whitaker really looking for me? Last year had drinks and picked his brain at #empower17#HackLearning#Empower18
A2 Three people w/different edu experiences, brought together as digital PLN via #sunchat (among other virtual venues), meet f2f at brick-&-mortar event hosted by #edttechteam (a digital learning champion). #hacklearning
A2. Got to meet with @smgaillard on a road trip a couple of years ago. So fun to have that time to connect. And Iām lucky to have his daily support in my #PLN. #hacklearning
It wasn't an education event, but I got to meet @joemullikin86 last night on my way through Rockford, Illinois. Anytime I get to meet a member of my PLN in person, it's an amazing experience! #HackLearning
I met Texas teacher of the year TOY @crewswlat at #edcamp. I didnāt realize who she was. After talkinf over lunch about innovative things happening in her classroom, I joked that she should be TOY-uhh she modestly said āoh, I am.ā #hacklearning#edcamp

A2) I met @PrincipalKafele in Hampton, VA during a conference this call. To have an opportunity to chat with him was phenomenal especially after watching his videos and reading his books #hacklearning
A2: This is something I hope to do more of in the coming year. Colorado sadly doesnāt do much in terms of education events & the education organizations out here tend to bring in the āreformerā crowd in & thatās not my cup of tea. #hacklearning
A2 so many examples of meeting ppl at convenings and realizing I feel like Iāve known them a long time despite it being the first F2F connection #hacklearning

A3 We can #growPLN by attending non-edu conferences (or following the # if we canāt go). We can wonder out loud how to apply work from outside our field, discuss ideas with the people we meet and with teachers, seek collaboration, and stay in touch. #HackLearning
One of my favorite aspects of presenting at and attending conferences is meeting educators who follow me on Twitter and/or have seen my work. I value these connections greatly. :-)
#HackLearning
A2: Met @donalynbooks this fall with my teaching team. She was REAL, profoundly wise, funny as heck, & kind. Her keeen focus on Ss and her book chat created a powerful buzz in the English Dept. #hacklearning
A2: I met @gcouros at our state technology conference #IETA18 We have followed each other for 7 years - he actually gave me a "shout out" in his keynote and affirmed the work I had been doing! Such an encouraging moment! #Empower18#HackLearning
A2 I met @malorie_ss when she attended one of my workshops and she shared ways she teaches about social justice using literature. She told me about books that would quickly become my studentsā favorites and pushed my thinking about my units. #HackLearning
A3 @Michelle4EDU taught me to follow everyone who follows me ... because we can learn from all ... itās not about the numbers, itās about building PLN and building morale ... letting others know you care with a š, a RT, a follow āŗļø #HackLearning
Donāt be afraid to reach out and make a connection. I saw @E_Sheninger at an event and thoughtāyou know what, Iām just going to walk over and say hello. He was awesome!!! #hacklearning#pln
A3: Not sure what āhackiestā means, but I donāt remember receiving nor giving tips to grow PLNs. As you engage, it grows naturally - a constant giving and receiving of knowledge. Not sure growth is the goal for growthās sake. #HackLearning
Love it - @donalynbooks was stuck in Cville airport a few years back.. reached out on twitter to see who was around/ I connected.. we went to visit a few #acps elem schools - amazing experience to be w/ the book whisperer given our librarians had just read it #hacklearning

@writenoelle, @donalynbooks, @DrSMort, @fergghs, @NicMil15, @donalynbooks
A1: Find a group of Ts at your school and grow your #PLN from there! This can be through simple things like lunches to after hour gatherings. Then expand it to your group level within your district. #HackLearning

A3: On Twitter, follow who other people follow. It might feel a little stalker-y, but it's a great way to find the people you need to make your PLN what you want! #hacklearning
YES! I'd also like to add that events are increasingly inaccessible - the cost goes beyond registration to include: travel, time out of the classroom, meals, etc. #HackLearning

A3: The late Phil Lawler was the king of networking. Pre social media, he had an email chain, almost like a listserv that once you were on it you were connected to the top #physed minds & supporters in the country. Grew so much from those connections. #HackLearning
Q3: JUST START! I'm new here & I can't tell you how many people have simply said "Be brave! Just jump in!" So I did! And they were right...I'm hooked! #bravery#PLN#HackLearning#Empower18
A3: Your opinion matters. Join the discussion, share thoughts & ideas. This communication & collaboration is how we grow. Itās ok to āwatchā twitter happen but you grow your PLN by participating. Try it, fail forward #HackLearning
A3: I met @Wes_Kieschnick at Model School Event 2017 and his tip to me was to get a message and build it. Been trying to focus on #ActiveLearning and share thoughts and presentations about the topic #hacklearning
It truly is amazing - remember when @E_Sheninger was a principal and I had him Skype in to a school board meeting to share power of social media to connect learning professionals #hacklearning
A3 I learned about how to create book trailers using iMovie & QR codes. I was able to immediately implement w/ students. Instead of a book report; my Ss made book trailers & created QR codes to share at open house! #hacklearning#edcamp
āIn 1933, the ultimate extremist group, led by Adolf Hitler, seized power. Constitutional rights were suspended, and mass searches for and seizures of guns and dissident publications ensued.ā https://t.co/LE6VIOz05N#hacklearning
A3 Analogy I re-purposed from @AngelaMaiers: Think of PLN as *Potluck* Learning Network. Share stuff generously; sample and respond to what others are offering. #hacklearning
