The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.

Morning #bfc530 !! Immgooong to actually make it into work today !! As I always tel my students, I’m always happy to be in class, it means we got there and we are safe.
We did "Rock Paper Scissors", and if you lost you had to follow the winner and cheer them on until there were only 2 people left. Then you cheered on the last two until a winner emerged. It was loud, but fun. We were all winners in that one. #bfc530
Wanted to share something kind of exciting with #bfc530 friends...@Hahne_Elyse and I are starting a new edu Twitter chat under the #gratefuledu hashtag. It will run for 30 minutes beginning at 7 pm EST on Sunday. It would be wonderful if our #bfc530 team could join us!
@TCECHS has advisory each day, but Friday is devoted to "Friends Friday" (modeled after the Critical Friends protocol), where more time is spent on team building activities among students. As for staff, having a staff member being a former Outward Bound instructor helps! #bfc530

No joke - this is what I had planned for this week’s advisory! The winter doldrums are wearing us all down so cookies and competition are on the menu! #bfc530
here's something a non-educator would not understand. you mean you couldn't participate in a 5:30 am edchat because you had work to do before you actually went into work? #bfc530
We tried a low rope course and hike for our opening PD one year. It was better than sitting on our butts for 4 hours, but a bunch of vocal complainers made it sound like the PD was worse than a root canal so it never happened again. #bfc530
For my admin team, we do a leadership question to begin each meeting. It allows us a chance to reflect & share our beliefs about r leadership practice #bfc530

I haven't done this, but one of my book club members mentioned it. A 'snowball fight' all names go on pieces of paper. You pick up closest one to you after the 'fight' and check in with them throughout the year #bfc530
I will say I really do not like when I am forced into an activity I do not want to do for some fake bonding that someone thinks is going to take place. And I always think some kids must feel same way....just saying...

Most any team building we've done is a success or failure based on the teachers. Sometimes it takes a push (or several) to move someone from "I don't wanna' to embracing something novel and fun.

We started out the school year doing a compass scavenger hunt game. This was good b/c we had a number of new T’s in the 8th grade and we got to know each other a bit better. #bfc530

Team building can happen. Allow groups to identify frequently seen local barriers to learning. Bring teams together with common commitment to a positive outcome for Ss benefit. #bfc530
I've been there. Actually was working on class stuff for the hour before #bfc530 With two non-teen children it is the early mornings are the only time they are quiet and not in motion (Not that Im complaining about those times) #bfc530
We went whitewater rafting at the start of the year! We had teachers, aides and our custodian in the group- so many laughs and a promise to make it an annual event #bfc530
So, I am new at my school this year & am excited that we are going to read Be the Wild Card and we are working on the #BeTheWildCard challenge. We have also been posting & tagging each other with book covers and album covers here on Twitter. #BFC530
We start every meeting with a question, sometimes education related, sometimes not. Just a quick way for everyone to share something about themselves. #bfc530

We created stained glass windows for our school, in teams, during a PD day last year...it was a faith development day. It truly brought our large staff together in a way I had never experienced before! #bfc530

We used to have brain bowls, field day, and winter carnival with students. But that was during a previous administration. Team building isn’t schoolwide so much anymore- very piecemeal. #bfc530

There will always be the eye rollers no matter what u plan. We try to make it as worthwhile as possible but that is difficult when there r 120 adults w/different personalities #bfc530

We've done the snowball fight thing in class as well as in staff meetings. Not for year-long stuff = that's a cool idea. But for partnering up and exchanging ideas. It was good. Great way to connect with other parts of the building. #bfc530
I've created some random small groupings of the faculty and staff to gauge their voice on a small set of questions.
Currently working towards our revised core values via Vision of the Graduate.
#bfc530
I really like that. The last PD I attended with @JodieMacInnis - we were asked to get into small groups and find 10 things we had in common but couldn't at all be related to work. It was such a great exercise- promotes creative questioning and lots of sharing #bfc530
#bfc530 Any of U educators out there working to stop this BS going on in schools today or you all on board? Never hear many of u on stage who say, we need more money, children are poor, children are black, or etc so they can't learn when in real life educators are not teaching
Our 7th grade team on our own have in the past had pre & post school BBQ's and Christmas parties. It really brought us as diverse people together as more than a team, but family. We really need to do that again #idea#planningendofschoolbbqfor7th#bfc530

I think school wide team building is over rated ... there needs to be a focus on building grade level and department teams and more importantly ... give them opportunity to BE A TEAM. Required time together should not be mandated by filling out mundane paperwork. #bfc530

As for PD, two years of asking teachers to innovate, create and present a solution to their peers via a #FedEx Day has been well-received and important venues to capture their voice.
#bfc530
We did a competitive team building activity with @OutbackTeams. They set up all the challenges and then you do them in teams. It was a lot of fun! #bfc530

Framing questions during PDs and in-services, for me, is much more important than the actual activity that elicits our responses. Sometimes the question / goal has been excellent. Other times, a flop. Ppl forget a "set induction" or hook is important in all learning.
#bfc530
Agree! Too often team building activities Im w/ppl from other schools I will rarely work with. If they want to mix it up beyond my team, put me with a 6th grade & 8th grade teacher, band teacher, & tech coach, ppl that I rarely see on a daily basis in my own school #bfc530
Indeed! If it's not happening, then it's symptomatic of a bigger cultural issue that MUST be addressed for the benefit of the entire learning community. #bfc530#openwaylearning
It was some of the senior staff that made it sound like they spoke for everyone. Over the years I have spoke w/some teachers who were there, and their response was "Why havent we dont that again?" Squeaky wheels get the grease #bfc530

Team is about having each other's backs ... collaborating ... i think we lose sight our the definition of "TEAM" when it becomes a 5 minute ice breaker or lame PD activity. Sorry Not Sorry ... that is my Marine Corps background eye rolling Ed "Team building" activities. #bfc530
Ooh! I was just at an orientation and each group of three got a gift bag with a random object in it and we had to come up with ideas about how the object could be used in the classroom. There were some very clever ideas! #BFC530
Love this chat. Always get something new here - a reframe, a question, a strategy. Thanks everyone. I love the way we ignore the bot questions rolling through. (Hint:Go divide educators somewhere else because we’re not on that) have a great day! #bfc530
Just a time to relax, where we could talk about shop if we want to, but can talk about our passions, our families, and laugh, laughing together is a wonderful team building activity (and yes, not laughing because marshmallows are falling out of my mouth) #bfc530
Well said...team building cannot be a one time event. It must be a TEAM effort every day. Collaboration, transparency, and communication to build trust & mutual respect. That's when you can truly innovate for the students (also every day). #bfc530
I mentioned High Ropes&Low Ropes & other problem solving skills, working in groups of 12. The important part is the debrief: What did you learn? It’s challenge based, did you really challenge yourself? What have you learned about teamwork&leadership? Saw this done @hgse#bfc530

Team takes time ... we have a tight 8th grade team and a tight Social Studies team and this is YEARS in the making ... as a result this has created a tight Middle school team. Our Middle School meetings with Admin have taken on a different vibe ... a team vibe. #bfc530
#bfc530 How many educators out there are sticking up for children being attacked and told they need to die, commit suicide or be killed? How many are on board with this behavior? Why r none of you speaking out against it?
#bfc530 how many of you take part in Enraging our youth until one snaps and becomes so enraged they murder, commit suicide or vandalize stores? If U r not included in this BS why R none of you ever speaking out against it?
The First Thought for Teachers episode of 2019! "Are You Teaching with a Dull Axe?" Something to reflect on today and be encouraged. https://t.co/NZb7IGCxC2#bfc530
Join @ShiftParadigm and me Thurs 6pm EST 1/17 for part 3 of our 3-part #WhatIsSchool series on Curious Classrooms. This week’s topic: Curiosity to Develop Empathy and a Sense of Justice in Students. You won’t want to miss this finale:) @smokeylit@mrkempnz#bfc530
I find team building as a whole school tough. More successful team building is often done outside of PD in self selected groups. (And as mentioned, over food!) #bfc530
Definition of team is: a number of persons associated together in work or activity. Maybe we are using the wrong "team." Maybe we should strive for a school culture "teeming" with collaboration, compassion, empathy, and wonderment. #NT2t#bfc530
CBS, the efforts on your website about your support for diversity fly in the face of your display of all of the reporters you've selected for the 2020 campaign. Not one Black. What's up with this? An explanation is needed.
After decades of a liberal jihad on white male “toxicity,” young victims like this have no recourse. The schools don’t help, the hands of the police are tied, and the lives of these kids are indeed a living hell... https://t.co/X3JizieC5v
